60 Rare Tongan Carved Wood Spear-Club, c. second half 18th century, carved from dense ironwood and intricately carved overall with geometric designs and with over twenty-five glyphs representing birds, turtle, fish, and human figures, dark glossy patina, lg. just under 8 ft. Provenance: Collected by Captain William Trotter (1769-1822) in 1796, “when his ship, the ‘Susan,’ stopped in the Friendly Islands for provisions and the king presented Trotter with ‘curiosities’.” Trotter was born in England and emigrated to Providence, Rhode Island, at the age of 19, having first been apprenticed as a cabin boy at the age of 9. After a lucrative globe-spanning career at sea, Trotter retired to Attleboro, Massachusetts, later settling in Bradford, Vermont. 207 Rare and Historic Painted Hide by Chiricahua Apache Naiche (1856-1919), c. late 19th/early 20th century, depicting one of the last (and possibly the very last) encounter of the Chiricahua “Hostiles” with the U.S. Army and Apache Scouts sometime before their surrender in 1886; at the top is a steer or buffalo head and symbolic circular devices, below is Naiche (Cochise’s son), Geronimo, and other Apaches behind large rocks and facing a row of Apache scouts and buckskinclad Army Scouts, rows of pack animals carrying supplies below them, Naiche signed below his head, with Geronimo’s name to his right, 53 x 36 in.

Provenance: Collected at Fort Sills, Oklahoma, by Miss Hendrina Hospers, “on to the buckskin, Naiche made them to sell. I gave him $10 for it. I think you are right about the battle between Geronimo’s band, with Naiche an ‘assistant’ to Geronimo and U.S. Army Apache Scouts. I came to Mescalero with the band in 1913, I believe it was, so I must of bought the buckskin about 1908. I was in Fort Sill 6 1/2 years.” The present owner’s great-grandfather, Richard H. Harper, was a missionary to the Apache along with Miss Hospers; she gave the robe to the present owner’s father, Mr. D. Harper Simms. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. Once on the exit ramp, stay in the right hand lane and follow the signs for Copley. The ramp exits onto Stuart Street. Drive straight through five sets of lights and take a left onto Charles Street South. Take your first left off of Charles St. South onto Park Plaza. Skinner is at 63 Park Plaza, one block up on the right.

From the South: Take 93-N to Exit 20 for I-90 W toward Worcester. Follow signs for Chinatown/South Station. Bear left at the fork to continue towards Kneeland Street. Turn left onto Kneeland Street. Kneeland Street becomes Stuart Street. Turn right onto Charles Street South. Turn left onto Park Plaza. Skinner is at 63 Park Plaza, one block up on the right.

From Logan Airport: Take the Ted Williams Tunnel. Take Exit 25 toward South Boston and bear left at the fork in the ramp.
