Samuel Jordan—Artist, Thief, Villain A Lecture by Deborah M. Child Thursday, February 25th, 6PM Born in Boston in 1805, Samuel Jordan went on to lead a life ripe with drama and hardship. In 1827, while an inmate in the Massachusetts state prison for counterfeiting money, he took up painting and fancied he would turn his life around. In this lecture, author Deborah M. Child will share her many discoveries concerning his artistic career before he vanished into thin air in 1835, after escaping from Charlestown where he had been serving a third sentence. Child is an author, lecturer, and independent curator. Her expertise in genealogy has proved critical for authenticating and attributing portraits from the Federal period and establishing provenance.

74 Silver Porringer, Paul Revere, Jr., Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1770, the slightly flared rim on a bulbous body with convex base marked on the inside “REVERE” (Kane mark B), and the pierced scroll handle engraved “P/DB” above slightly later initials “BP,” lg. 8 1/2, dia. 5 1/2 in.
20
Note: Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers, by Patricia Kane, records a Paul Revere, Jr., porringer in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum of nearly identical form and engraved on the handle “P/DB” above the slightly later initials “MP” as having belonged to David and Betiah (Ingersoll) Pearce. Genealogical research reveals that David (1736-1818) and Betiah (1740-92) Pearce lived in Gloucester, Massachusetts and together had nine children. The close similarity to the style of engraving of the two porringers suggest that they are related and likely originated in the same family. Their first-born child, Bethia (1761-96), is the only child whose name corresponds with the initials “BP” on this porringer. Their third child, Mary (1763-c. 1838), is the only child whose name corresponds with the initials “MP” on the Worcester Art Museum example. $8,000-12,000

At the age of eight, he was sent from the West Indies to Philadelphia to be educated and served an apprenticeship to a silversmith from 1799 to 1806. After completing his apprenticeship, Bentzon returned to Christianstead, St. Croix, where he set up business as a silversmith. In 1816 he moved back to Philadelphia where he continued his trade until returning to St. Croix again in 1829. For the next nineteen years Bentzon resided on the island until finally relocating to Philadelphia for the last time in 1848. For additional information on Bentzon see “A ‘mustice’ silversmith in Philadelphia and St. Croix, 1783-1850,” essay by Rachel E.C. Provenance: Daniel Badger was born in Boston, May 31, 1775. He married Ann Jones (1782-1855) October 3, 1797 and together they had nine children. Badger was a clothing dealer and ship owner and resided on Windmill Walk at the Mill Bridge, Boston. About 1809 Daniel relocated his family to Cambridge but returned to Boston about 1814 with his business and residence then located on Broad Street. In the summer of 1815 Daniel contracted yellow fever after visiting one of his ships that had recently arrived from Africa. On August 15 he died near Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The needlework memorial was stitched by Daniel’s wife, Ann, who completed it about 1821 memorializing the death of her husband and their child Charles Henry (c. January 13, 1806-February 27, 1806). According to the consignor, “Claggett was an avid collector of New England art and dear friends with the Guggenheims as well as many other notable people in the [early 20th century].” Literature: “Samuel Jordan: Artist, Thief, Villain,” by Deborah M. Child, in Antiques and Fine Art, Summer 2009, pp. 146-153.
322
Note: As Deborah Child tells us in her article regarding what is known of Samuel Jordan’s life, he was “an all-round scoundrel.” In and out of prison (where he actually earned money for painting) for much of the late 1820s and early 1830s, the Medford (Massachusetts) born artist was a talented but seemingly troubled man. He dabbled in counterfeiting (likely perfecting his trade while imprisoned in Charlestown, Child implies), dealt in contraband while incarcerated, and began his third stint in prison in 1834 after being convicted for breaking and entering a home in Acton, Massachusetts. He escaped from prison in 1836, reportedly destined for Texas, and was never heard from again. $8,000-12,000 324 Attributed to Zedekiah Belknap (Massachusetts/New Hampshire/ Connecticut, 1781-1858) Portrait of a Woman with a Yellow Shawl Unsigned. 344 Green-painted Carved Federal Mantelpiece, probably from the TerhuneHitchings Mansion, Kings County, Long Island, c. 1812, the serpentine cornice with reeded details above a stepped molding and reeded frieze, with three bowed panels below, the center panel carved with a large patera and smaller bowed panels carved with circular fans, all separated by columns, and flanked by four-column posts with turned urns “trapped” within, on a carved architrave with reeding and paired fans, supported by reeded and turned freestanding columns with ball-carved and molded bases, ht. 65 3/4, wd. 92 1/2 in.
Note: Directly related to a mantelpiece in the collection at the Brooklyn Museum given by the Hitchings family, about which a great deal is known. Mr. Benjamin Hitchings, a resident of Gravesend, Kings County, New York, was born and raised in a house built in 1812 by Judge Abraham Terhune, a member of one of the wealthiest families on Long Island. The Brooklyn Museum’s mantelpiece was removed from the parlor of the Terhune-Hitchings home. According to a note provided by the museum to the present consignor, in the early 19th century Judge Terhune “resolved that he would be the possessor of one of the handsomest houses in Kings County. He employed a famous Dutch builder of those days...” The account goes on to explain the materials used (oak for beams, cedar for roof and siding), as well as the dimensions of the house and proportions of rooms, and then admits that “the mantelpieces are the chief works of art about the house. Upon these a vast amount of time and skill have been spent.
It is said that the workman, in order not to be disturbed, locked himself in one of the rooms, and worked away silently, refusing admittance to anyone until one day Judge Terhune threatened to break the door.” $4,000-6,000
