Reception & Extended Auction Preview: An Evening with Deke Dickerson Friday, November 4 5:30-7PM R.S.V.P. to 508.970.3240 photo credit: Susie Delany

“It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it,” claims journeyman musician/singer/entertainer Deke Dickerson. As usual, Dickerson interjects dry wit into a serious proclamation of his career intent: keeping America’s roots music alive while interjecting new creativity—a blood transfusion, if you will—into genres of music that flourished in decades previous. Deke Dickerson has been carrying the torch since he was 13, playing in his first rockabilly band in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri. After moving to Los Angeles at the age of 22, Dickerson carved out a niche for himself in Tinseltown. In addition to playing in his primary band, Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, as well as several side projects, Dickerson has provided rootsy music for a slew of television shows and movie projects (including scoring the music for the cult favorite, Johnny Knoxville–produced The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia). “This music isn’t a cartoon to me, or some weird retro thing to be laughed at,” states Dickerson. “This is the great music of the American 20th-century experience: rock and roll, rockabilly, western swing, rhythm and blues, surf music, garage, and punk. It’s every bit as vital and important as jazz or classical; it just hasn’t gotten its due yet. There has to be somebody out there waving the flag for this music. Wherever I go, anywhere on the planet, people love this music, yet it’s kept out of the mainstream media simply because it’s considered ‘old.’” Dickerson’s new releases showcase his versatility as well as his desire to touch all bases in the roots music pantheon. In the last three years, he has released an album of vocal versions of surf instrumentals, Sing The Instrumental Favorites, with the popular current surf act Los Straitjackets. He has released an all-rockabilly album, Echosonic Eldorado, that sounds as if it could have come out of Sun Studios in Memphis circa 1956. He has released an album with the legendary surf group the Trashmen, of “Surfin’ Bird” fame, Bringing Back the Trash, that is every bit as wild and crazed as the Trashmen’s recordings from the early 1960s. And he traveled to Memphis to record an EP, Soul Meets Country, with blues/ R&B sensation Nikki Hill, backed by the Bo-Keys, an all-star group made up of legendary Memphis soul musicians and top-of-the-heap younger players. Such versatility has endeared Dickerson to fans and impressed music journalists as well. Dickerson has also made a name for himself in other avenues. He has his own signature guitar, manufactured by the Hallmark Guitar Company of Maryland. He writes for several guitar magazines and has two books published by Voyageur Press, The Strat in the Attic and The Strat in the Attic 2. Two of Dickerson’s songs are used in the newest Disneyland ride, Cars Land, at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. Dickerson is well known as a historian of roots music and regularly contributes liner notes to reissue projects for such labels as Capitol, RCA, Bear Family, and Sundazed.

Vintage Guitars & Memorabilia featuring the Collections of Little Jimmy Dickens and Marty Stuart Lots 357–572

With Regards to Mr. Dickens… Little Jimmy Dickens is to be regarded as a true American original. He is a bona fide folk hero and master architect concerning the vernacular of twentieth century folk and country music. As an entertainer, song stylist, band leader and songwriter, Mr. Dickens has influenced every strand of country music culture since the beginning of his professional career in the late 1930s. Little Jimmy Dickens either shook hands, performed, hunted, fished, played poker or befriended everyone from the original Carter Family to the current roster of country music’s biggest stars. When Mr. Dickens passed away on January 2, 2015, the last star from country music’s genesis cast was stilled. With him went a virtual library of wisdom, stories, anecdotes and songs from country music’s golden era. What he left behind was a profound musical legacy and a vast trove of artifacts pertaining to his nine decade plus life and career. Amongst scholars, fans and collectors alike, it has often been speculated that the Dickens collection held a substantial amount of country music treasures. However, for anyone to hope to see beyond the gates of Mr. Dickens’ intensely private world seemed unrealistic. Those speculations did prove to be accurate. At the beginning of 2016 Jimmy’s wife, Mona, offered some of her hand selected choices from the estate’s inventory for consideration to a select group of Mr. Dickens’ friends and colleagues. Later in the year, on the week of April 18th, Grand Ole Opry manager, Pete Fisher; consultant, Kerry Keane; Skinner Inc. curator, Adam Tober and I gathered at the Dickens home for a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of what now is being offered on the pages of this book. The home was indeed a treasure chest. I witnessed a room filled with costumes made famous by Mr. Dickens. I touched instruments that he considered to be special. There were literally hundreds of awards and gifts that were given to Mr. Dickens by the music industry, his peers and fans. His personal effects were especially touching, some dating back to his childhood days in West Virginia. Other items such as his trademark diamond J.D. ring and gold eagle necklace seemed to personify the story of a country boy who sang his way to the top of the American dream. The photography archives had been carefully edited and arranged by Mrs. Dickens and placed on tables in the dining room. The photographs were filed by the decade in which they were taken. In looking through the images, every so often a picture would stop me cold and I’d ask, “Who took this?” The answer was always, “Jimmy.” I had no idea that Mr. Dickens was a photographer. His access and especially his perspective on his subjects or the scene in which he was documenting was profound. Until I went to the Dickens home I was under the impression that only two color images of Hank Williams existed. In Mr. Dickens’ files, I saw two more with an archival note on his box of slides that led me to believe that more color pictures of Hank were to be found inside. When I had finished what time allowed me to see in Mr. Dickens’ photography files, I felt as though I had been in the presence of unpublished pages from the Book of Exodus. As stunning as the collective impact of the costumes, the instruments, the photography was, what spoke the loudest to me was the music, namely the records. The basement is where Mr. Dickens kept his recordings, rows of pristine 78 rpm discs with titles that served as a reminder that Little Jimmy Dickens did indeed choose songs with timeless appeal. Song by song he contributed mightily to the formations of the American recording industry and to the empire of country music. Deep in the grooves of his records, a serious artist is to be found, a master of his craft. As famed WSM disc jockey and country music historian, Eddie Stubbs, has said, “Often imitated, never equaled,” that’s Mr. Dickens. There’s an old gospel song with the title “I Was There When It Happened, (So I Guess I Oughtta Know)”. That title could be applied to the life and times of Little Jimmy Dickens and his treasures. Mr. Dickens occupies a place in American history like no other. To know him was to know a statesman. Every song he sang mattered as did everything he possessed. Everything that pertained to Little Jimmy Dickens mattered. That is why it is important for one of American music’s most beloved person’s treasures to be handled with proper care. Under Pete Fisher’s guidance, the cast of Skinner, Inc. was brought into the Dickens home. Being the gentlemen that they are, Kerry Keane and Adam Tober brought with them their expertise, integrity and dignity from the world of moving treasures. When everyone in the room found the beam of Mr. Dickens’ standards, the road appeared. The last time I saw Mr. Dickens was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. He walked up to me, stuck out his hand and said, “LOVE IS THE WORD...,” and it is. With regards to Mr. Dickens, Marty Stuart

The Collection of Little Jimmy Dickens Roy Acuff first introduced Jimmy Dickens to the Grand Ole Opry stage in 1948, and Dickens went on to wow audiences both at the Opry and around the world with his shiny rhinestone-studded outfits, timeless songs, and country humor for more than six decades. Dickens was the oldest of 13 children born to a West Virginia farm couple. He started singing on radio station WOLS while attending the University of West Virginia, opening his program by crowing like a rooster. There, he set his sights on an entertainment career that would eventually find him spreading his brand of “Hillbilly Fever” near and far. The entertainer made 13 trips to Europe, and he twice entertained the troops in Vietnam. In 1964, he became the first country artist to completely circle the globe on a world tour. That same year, he released “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.” The single topped the country charts and became a pop hit as well. By then, Dickens had been a beloved figure among the country faithful for years. He’d had a string of down-home novelty hits, including “A-Sleeping at the Foot of the Bed,” “Out Behind the Barn,” and “Take an Old Cold Tater (And Wait),” the song that prompted Hank Williams to dub his diminutive friend “Tater.” Dickens was also a master of the recitation and a ballad singer so exceptional that George Jones once honored his friend with the tribute album George Jones Sings Like the Dickens. Dickens was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983, and kept audiences laughing, clapping, and singing along until his death in 2015 less than two weeks after his 94th birthday and his final Grand Ole Opry performance.

“I was a huge fan of Little Jimmy Dickens in the 50’s & 60’s. My best friend, Betty Miles painted this portrait of Jimmy for me as a Christmas present in 1967”

361 Portrait of Little Jimmy Dickens “I was a huge fan of Little Jimmy Dickens in the 50’s & 60’s. My best friend, Betty Miles painted this portrait of Jimmy for me as a Christmas present in 1967. I had heard on the radio that Jimmy was going to be a DJ for 3 days at a radio station in Des Moines, Iowa in 1968. I had a picture of me taken holding this portrait of Jimmy and sent the photo and a letter to Jimmy to this radio station in Des Moines. I just told him what a huge fan I was and how much I loved his music. He read my letter on air and said ‘I should be holding Mona instead of her holding me.’ In July 1971 I was so excited that Jimmy’s show was coming to my hometown in Indiana. I bought tickets immediately. After the show I went back stage to see if I could take a picture of him and did and as I was walking away I turned and ask him if he remembered getting a letter and picture of a woman holding a portrait of him when you worked as a DJ in Des Moines. He looked at me and asked if I was that girl and I said yes. ‘Come on my bus I want to show you something.’ I followed him and sat down he pulled the picture from his briefcase. He said ‘I’ve searched for your face in every crowd, I’ve written you letters from Italy to Spain and from all over the world but I never mailed any of them. Now that I found you I’m never going to let you go.’ That was the beginning of our courtship and love affair. We were married on December 24, 1971 and were married for 43 years. Jimmy was and will always be the love of my life.” —Mona Dickens $300-500

Whether an icon of the stage and screen or a country singer on tour for the first time, Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors in North Hollywood, California, was a destination for the hip and aspiring alike. Born Nuta Kotlyarenko (Kiev, 1902), Nudie Cohn plied his trade on New York City showgirls before setting his sights on the stars of the Golden West. He wrapped Elvis in gold lamé and John Lennon in Western wear; he put rhinestones on cowboys and cowboy boots on rockstars. From Nashville to Beverly Hills, anyone who was anyone owned a Nudie suit, and Little Jimmy Dickens owned many.

The Collection of Marty Stuart

“If you were to give country music an address, you might say it’s at the corner of sacred and profane...” If you were to give country music an address, you might say it’s at the corner of sacred and profane, two doors up from the blues and folk, and just across the street from gospel, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll. And on a deeper emotional and spiritual level, it resides where Saturday night meets Sunday morning. No one understands these coordinates better than Marty Stuart. For over forty years, the five-time Grammy winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, photographer and historian has been building a rich legacy at this very crossroads. Born in the small town of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Marty Stuart caught the music bug early, displaying prodigious talent on every stringed instrument he picked up. At an age when most kids are running bases in little league, 13-year-old Stuart was logging cross-country interstate miles as a mandolinist with the legendary Lester Flatt’s road band. In his twenties, Stuart toured with Johnny Cash, and also played with other legends such as Bill Monroe, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. By the late 1980s, Stuart was a solo artist, rising faster than mercury in the heat of a hillbilly fever. All of Stuart’s immersion in authentic country music has also found creative expression through the lens of a camera. Inspired by the photographs of jazz drummer Milt Hinton of his fellow musicians, Stuart realized in the early 1970s that he could fill a similar role as a chronicler. And for decades, he’s been capturing strikingly beautiful images of performers and fans that feel like little windows into the soul of our country. Of his photography, Stuart says, “Whether it was the doorman at the Opry, or Ernest Tubb’s bus driver, or stars or songwriters or musicians, everybody stood still for me and let me take pictures. I’d aim to capture what they all meant to me. It was basically like taking pictures of my family. It takes a tribe to raise a kid, and they were my tribe. All of those people invested something in me when I was a kid, and I wanted to remember that kindness. The thing about that era of those old masters is that most of them were really country people. They were down to earth. Basically, farm people who’d come to town and got a job singing songs. That’s what I related to, coming from Mississippi. The other side of it, I wanted to take pictures of my life on the road to send home to my family and they could see what I was up to. It was basically documenting family. “Songwriting, photography, guitar playing, entertaining, singing, designing TV shows - it’s all the same thing to me,” Stuart continues. “If I take a good photograph, it absolutely makes me do everything else better. If I play a good guitar solo, it absolutely affects how I take the next picture. It’s all interwoven.”

In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold “as is, and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser. 5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases. 6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. Sales in Massachusetts, Florida, and New York are subject to the respective current sales taxes. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of proper documentation. 10. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus 12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid. 12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit. Revised January 21, 2015
