N.B. Michael Mazur’s career was filled with critical acclaim and admiration for his paintings, pastels, monotypes, and prints. In his Stoneham Zoo series, Mazur revisited the themes of confinement and captivity, difficult content which he had expressed so powerfully in the Closed Ward series (1962-62). In a 1993 interview with the Archives of American Art, Mazur said, “I decided to do some work on the monkey cages at Stoneham Zoo, which were very depressed and reminded me of the mental hospital. It was a strange return to the hospital work via the world of animals. Telling the story of captured animals became important.” Through this series the artist continued to present the effects of society on the individual, communicated in the expressive brushwork and subdued palette that were his hallmarks. $1,500-2,000 1013 Alphonse Palumbo (American, 18901947)

The work at hand is a study for the WPA-era mural by Karl Anderson for the Bedford, Ohio, Post Office, c. 1937. The mural depicts the migration of American farmers to the factories during the Industrial Revolution. The artist is known to have completed two post office murals, the second one located at the Westville Station, New Haven, Connecticut (1939) presents a scene of local history. Condition: Foxing, minor toning, mounted to cardboard support. N.B. Beginning in 1904 and continuing for forty years, Samuel T. Shaw sponsored a purchase prize for the Salmagundi Club’s Annual Exhibition of Oil Paintings. He proved a lithographic print of the winning painting signed by all members of the club attending the informal dinner in honor of the winner, and each member received a copy. The F.W. Hutchinson painting reproduced here received Shaw’s purchase prize in 1936.1 We would like to thank Alexander Katlan for his assistance identifying this lot.
