The Collection of Rita Goodman Lots 1–69 Rita Jane Goodman, nee Siegel, was born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1928. After her first marriage ended, Rita opened an antique and decorating store, Plain & Fancy, in Vineland, New Jersey. A few years later she found the love of her life, jazz pianist John Goodman. After their marriage, the couple moved to Los Angeles in 1968, where they opened Peacock Alley Antiques on Wilshire Boulevard. The gallery specialized in decorative arts from the Art Nouveau period. A few years later they moved their gallery to Beverly Hills on Cannon Drive. Rita became a prominent expert on Tiffany lamps. One of her notable discoveries was in the basement of the Marion Davies estate, where she found the Tiffany Studios chandelier made for Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Long Island estate. It now resides in the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. Rita also consulted as an art expert to many authors, scholars and museums. Her elegance, taste, and incredible connoisseurship are shown in this exceptional collection of jewelry.

Arthur & Georgie Gaskin

Lots 417–419

Arthur Gaskin was a teacher at the Birmingham School of Art when he met Georgie Evelyn Cave France in 1888. They married in 1894, and together worked as book illustrators. After a series of commercial disappointments the Gaskins embarked on a second career in jewelry and metalwork in 1899. They achieved almost immediate success with their jewelry designs and were included in the 1899 Arts and Crafts Exhibition in London. The Gaskins established a Birmingham workshop which produced artistic, handmade pieces in a city known for its industrial jewelry production. Describing how they worked, Georgie wrote “I did all the designing & he did all the enamel, and we both executed the work with our assistants.” Arthur was the head of the Vittoria Street School for Jewellers and Silversmiths from 1903 to 1924. It was during this period that the mature phase of their jewelry emerged. This was marked by more sculptural forms, innovative use of color, and increased use of precious stones. After Arthur’s death in 1928, Georgie continued to design jewelry under her own name, always presented in cases of mourning black in memory of her husband and partner.

Note: The inscription indicates that this piece was made for Jocelyne Verney Gaskin, the daughter of Arthur and Georgie Gaskin. The pendant was exhibited at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in 1903, with the enamel work credited to Effie Ward. It was on the cover of the exhibition catalog Arthur & Georgie Gaskin published by the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in 1981. The subject matter and style are almost identical to the Gaskins’ work as illustrators, which makes this pendant an important link between media. $6,000-8,000

Note: This piece is believed to be part of a larger necklace presented by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham to Queen Alexandra upon her visit to the city in 1909.
