Marlborough Gallery | 274 Cedar Hill Street, Marlborough, MA Richard Ketchen, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, will lead a gallery walk on Fasoldt clocks and the Holtzapffel ornamental turning lathe and rose engine featured in this sale. A leading clock and scientific instrument conservator, Richard is uniquely qualified to speak on these diverse subjects. Ketchen has restored a large and diverse collection of Fasoldt timekeepers and has made one from scratch to better understand the genius of the original maker. As an avocation, Richard acquired a Holtzapffel ornamental turning lathe and an entire cabinet full of original components, and he now spends his spare time reinventing the mysteries of ornamental turning. Join us for what will no doubt be a very interesting evening.

Antique Motor Vehicles & Automobile Memorabilia The Estate of Eugene B. Bunce Lots 1-10, Ephemera and Auto-related Lots 15-43 We are honored to offer at public auction The Eugene B. Bunce Collection. Eugene Bunce was a civil engineer, Marine, and family man whose passion was restoring, driving, and showing classic cars. He was a dedicated member of The Minuteman Model A Club, Maynard Area Auto Club, Central Massachusetts Model T Club, New England Vintage T-Bird Club, and Early V8 Ford Club, as well as a contributing supporter of the Model A Ford Museum in Michigan. Bunce was also an avid inventor awarded many U.S. patents, and founder of Bunce Industries of Stow, Massachusetts.
The Estate of Henry Snyder Lots 12 and 13 Henry Snyder served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the owner of Snyder Machine Co. of Saugus which he established in 1955 in Lynn and moved to Saugus in 1963. In 1962, he developed the first flute for H.B. Reese’s Co. Mr. Snyder was an active participant with the Shriners, a member of the North Shore Old Car Club for over 30 years as well as the Packard Club; he was devoted to the mission at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston. The proceeds from these lots to benefit The Shriners.

11 1937 Cord Phaeton 812, VIN #1267A, designed by Gordon Miller Buehrig, made in Auburn, Indiana, 125 bhp, 90-degree, 288-cid V-8 engine with aluminum heads, 4-speed transmission with vacuum electric shifting, black exterior with hidden headlights, independent front suspension, subframe no. 1320, front brakes redone, clutch rebuilt, runs well, call for condition report.
Exhibitions: This vehicle has been on loan to the New England Air Museum for many years, most recently exhibited under the wing at the Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) exhibit. Amelia was passionate about the Cord automobile and the modern airplane. The forward-thinking culture of the time viewed the connection as the ultimate in modern transportation for their speed and streamline design. Note: This innovative design was ahead of its time and considered one of the Museum of Modern Arts’ “stellar” designs. Approximately 3,000 Cords were made from 1936 to 1937, when financial distress ceased production. $110,000-120,000

Provenance: Peter Eaton Coates Esq. of Stanton Court, London, acquired the rose engine in 1816. All five subsequent owners are known and documented and will accompany the lot. Henry C. Wing of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and Donald B. Wing of Marion, Massachusetts, were the fifth and sixth owners respectively, with the Donald Wing Estate the present consignor. Provenance material accompanies the lot. Note: According to the late Warren Greene Ogden Jr., a noted authority on ornamental turning, “No. 1071 is a ‘True’ Rose Engine with the headstock mounted on a cannon bearing 12 inches below the mandrel. Thus in the Holtzapffel Register such lathes are designated as ‘12 inch Rose Engines.’ Other lathes fitted out for rose engine turning are known as ‘conversions.’” (Odgen, Notes on the History and Provenance of Holtzapffel Lathes, 1987). $60,000-80,000

Note: Charles Fasoldt (1819-1889) was born in Dresden, Germany. By the mid19th century he settled in Rome, New York, practicing the watchmaking trade, one in which he was particularly skilled. Fasoldt manufactured, exhibited, and won prizes for his eight-day watches, regulators, and pocket chronometers. After a move to Albany about 1860, where he manufactured award-winning tower clocks and astronomical regulators, he is credited with inventing a “peculiar double wheel escapement called ‘Fasoldt’s Chronometer.’” (Derek Roberts, Precision Pendulum Clocks, France, Germany, America, and Recent Advancements, p. 208). $60,000-80,000

Horner & Co., W. 23rd Street, New York, from the estate of Colonel Park Shaw of Carefree, Arizona, finely carved removable crest with winged figures flanking a center raised boss supported by flowers, leaves, and scroll decoration over the gadrooned crown molding, below winged griffins flank the composite brass arabic numeral dial with seconds bit, subsidiary dials for Chime-Silent and Westminster/Whittington chime selection, moon’s age in the arch and pierced brass grillwork on spandrels and center, the glazed waist door flanked by human and fish-form caryatids over the fully carved base panel with central putti, birds, a grotesque mask, and allegorical human depictions of the wind on a punch-decorated ground, eight-day, three-train, quarter-chiming movement by J.J. Elliott, LTD, London, with nine tubular bells, deadbeat escapement, rack and snail strike, brass-faced seconds-beating pendulum and three brass-cased weights, ht. 116 in.
Provenance: This clock was reportedly owned by John Jacob Astor IV of the prominent Astor family of New York. Purchased from Tiffany & Co. of New York in the early 20th century by Mr. Astor and given as a gift to a friend by the name of Ms. Huntington, a Metropolitan Opera singer. After the passing of Mr. Astor in 1914 aboard the famous Titanic, Ms. Huntington sold it to a Dr. and Mrs. John A. Burke, an eminent New York physician. Dr. Burke and his wife retired to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, his native city, sometime in the late 1920s early 1930s. An article dated October 1934 appeared in the Berkshire Evening Eagle titled “John Jacob Astor’s Clock Stands in Local Homestead” recalls a short history of the clock. It was then gifted to or purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Shaw in 1967, also of Pittsfield. It was then handed down to A. Park Shaw Jr. who became a Colonel in the U.S. Army and resided in his later years in Carefree, Arizona, until his death last year. Mrs. Cherri Shaw is parting with this beloved family piece with a heavy heart but believes it will find a new caring custodian. There is extensive family history, including black-and-white photographs, repair invoices, and original typed correspondences between R.P. Swanson, manager of the clocks department at Tiffany & Co., R.W. Elliott of F.W. Elliot Ltd., of Croydon, England, the maker of the movement, and Park Shaw Jr. between the dates of July 1968 and November 1969 trying to piece together the history of this monumental carved clock. There is a photocopied letter dated October 7th, 1969 on F.W. Elliot letterhead to a Rosealind Silberman stating the possible carver of this clock was named Orpen, and the mechanism was imported into the states by Harris and Harrington sometime between 1886-1901. Colonel Park Shaw (1923-2016) graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute in 1942. After graduation he immediately enlisted and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Benning, Georgia. He participated with General MacArthur with the initial assault on Luzon in 1945. He later was involved in the initial occupation of Hokkaido, Japan. Following the war, Col. Shaw served on the General Staff of the 6th Army at Presidio in San Francisco. In 1991, he was inducted into the Infantry Officers’ Candidate School Hall of Fame. In 2006 he was inducted into the Arizona Veterans’ Hall of Fame awarded by Governor Janet Napolitano. $40,000-60,000

414 Republic-47D Thunderbolt U-control Model Airplane by Ernest Berke, constructed 1956-65, Elmont, Long Island, 1/12th scale model powered by a single cylinder Hassad .720 displacement “glow” engine with a 1.042 stroke, and .9375 bore, two-bladed 12-in. dia. and 6-in. pitch propeller, the landing gear, cockpit lights, flaps, landing lights, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, engine throttle, etc., all functioning both from the cockpit and from the modified Roberts U-control handle, the power for these functions is provided via a 12-volt motorcycle battery fitted to a custom designed belt to be worn by the operator, the plane weighs approximately 7 1/2 pounds, the hand-colored, designed, and typed bound technical manual along with many original black-and-white photographs of the construction and details of the plane, air shows, and Academy of Aeronautics meeting flyers designed by Mr. Berke accompany the lot, wingspan 43 in. Note: Ernest Berke was born in New York City in 1921, to first-generation Russian and Romanian parents. At an early age, his artistic talents were recognized and enthusiastically supported by his parents. This support as it turns out, wasn’t misguided, as Ernest went on to become the youngest chief fashion artists Sears Roebuck had ever had, and subsequently went on to his life’s passion as a noted artist, sculptor, historian, author, and teacher. The groundwork for his vision, and finally his construction of the P-47 Thunderbolt model was cultivated as a youngster. Growing up in the Hell’s Kitchen section of New York, money was in short supply, and Ernie’s passion for model making required a creative approach. The wood for his models came from the produce market in the city, where he could procure hardwood fruit crates for free. With a pocketknife, some sandpaper, glue and basic paints he pursued his passion for model making, especially for the U.S. fighter aircraft of the day.

In the early 1950s, while working at Sears, the idea to build the most accurate flying scale model airplane ever created, began taking shape. During these years the American Model Association, and Academy of Model Aeronautics were sponsoring very large, and wildly popular meets supporting U-control, and early radio control modeling enthusiasts. The category of choice for this model would be “Flying Scale.” Simply put, this category required that the model be “anatomically correct” and complete ten laps flying, taking off and landing under it’s own power. As no plans existed to build such a model, Ernie managed to procure blueprints from Republic Aviation Corporation in order to faithfully duplicate and incorporate all of the functioning systems of the P-47 into his model. The level of engineering incorporated into a model of this size has rarely, if ever, been seen before or since. After thousands of hours, and almost nine years of pain staking work, the P-47 was completed. It went on to compete at the Nationals in Chicago in 1964 where it won first place. Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2.
