Literature: A similar weather vane is illustrated in A Gallery of American Weathervanes and Whirligigs, by Robert Bishop & Patricia Coblentz, Bonanza Books, publishers, 1984. Note: “The first full-time commercial weathervane manufacturer was Alvin L. Jewell of Waltham, Massachusetts, near Boston, who opened his doors in 1852. Jewell, a gifted designer and craftsman, created a line of weathervane forms imitated by later business. He was also the first to publish a catalog of his designs. His vanes were made of copper molded in iron forms, which had been cast from carved wood models. Each part of the vane was molded in two symmetrical halves joined with solder. This new method allowed Jewell and his followers to mass-produce identical vanes. Jewell’s hollow copper vanes were clear, simple forms, easily recognized from any viewpoint. They were an immediate success. After Jewell’s death (in a rooftop fall) in 1867, his business and patterns were sold at auction.” Excerpted from the National Gallery of Art’s Catalog, An American Sampler: Folk Art from the Shelburne Museum, 1987, p. 114. $25,000-35,000

The 1841 fourth of July celebration aboard the Constitution at Callao Bay, Peru, was a raucous event that was described in Life in a Man-of-War, or Scenes in “Old Ironsides” During Her Cruise in the Pacific (Philadelphia, 1841). The affair began when “all three decks of the old Constitution, amongst four or five hundred true sons of Ocean, when their extra whiskey began to operate. A plan that had never been acted upon before was adopted on this occasion, viz. that of serving their extra to them in messes, pure and unadulterated as it came from the spirit-room, and ere two bells had struck, its effects were visible in every corner.” Soon everyone on the ship was “staggering about delightfully intoxicated, forming a scene of glorious confusion... [and as a result] many were the debts of longstanding which the discipline of the ship would not admit of bringing to a settlement before, that were on this particular evening paid with compound interest; many were the eyes that were blackened, the ribs that were pummelled, the faces that were scarified by the sharp knuckles of some two-fisted customer; and all the effects of this Fourth of July extra tot. Our lads [pursued] their bacchanalian orgies until ten or twelve o’clock at night; and the next morning many a visit was paid to the barber’s looking-glasses by some of the fighting characters, to see what quantity of black-eyes and deep-gashes they could lay claim to, gained the day previous in a cause so truly patriotic.” $50,000-70,000

Note: According to James Gregory Mumford, in the mid-18th century, Thomas and his brother David with “their little fleet of packets did a thriving trade with the West Indies until the [French and Indian War] turned them to privateering.” The adventurer, David Mumford, “on the twelfth of June, 1757... in a New London privateer, fell down to Harbor’s mouth, and on the seventeenth, five days later, there arrived at New London a prize schooner taken by Captain Mumford” showing “quick work on the part of our vigorous ancestor.” “This was the end of his active career as a privateersman, however; for shortly afterwards he was taken by a French man-of-war and carried, a prisoner, into Martinique. He did not wait for the capture of the island by Rodney, in 1762, for his release, but in some way escaped and returned home [prior to 1758].”

Additional information and photos at www.skinnerinc.com

“A young wife and children came to chain him to New London, and from this date his active adventures ceased... our David Mumford married his [Gurdon Saltonstall’s] granddaughter Rebecca… She was born on the thirty-first of December, 1734, and David on the tenth of March, 1731, so that at the time of their marriage [June 1st, 1758 in New London] he was twenty-seven and she was twenty-three. Their portraits, painted about that time, show them a fine couple in whom their descendants may take a proper pride.” The whereabouts of Rebecca Saltonstall’s portrait are unknown. “With the outbreak of our own Revolution in 1775... [the Mumfords] were staunch patriots and Whigs, and their devotion to the cause of their country was never doubted, in spite of their Churchmanship and Tory connections.” During the Revolutionary War, David served on the Governor’s Council of Safety. $30,000-50,000
