Modern Design by a Mid-Century New Englander A Lecture by Lucretia Giese Wednesday, August 23, 2017 5PM Reception | 6PM Lecture | Marlborough, MA A look at some of the forces shaping mid-century modern design through the work of one New England practitioner: Henry B. Hoover. Hoover is known today as an architect; less known is his design work, which manifested itself in three ways. As a residential architect, Hoover designed numerous houses in New England, including the first Modern house in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and pieces of furniture for his clients. With landscape architect Fletcher Steele, Hoover created many garden features using modern industrial materials and modern forms, the Blue Steps at Naumkeag being a notable example. Industrial design also commanded a place in Hoover’s practice, evolving from his work for Raytheon during WWII. Hoover’s career exemplifies the many sides of Modernism. Lucretia Giese has a PhD in Fine Arts from Harvard University, is Professor Emeritus of Art History and Visual Culture at RISD; and is a Board Member of the Friends of Modern Architecture, Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Provenance

The Collection of George Wald Lots 211, 215–218, 230, 243, 246, 275–277, 279–287, 347, 433 George Wald (1906-1997) was a Nobel prize-winning biochemist, a prominent peace activist, and a devoted collector of indigenous and other styles of art. Born in Brooklyn, he went to Manual Training High School and was the first member of his family to go to college, and his tastes in art combined an acquired love of high culture with a deep appreciation for objects made by village craftspeople for local or ceremonial purposes—things that were not only beautiful but meaningful, and even useful. Most of his collection was assembled in the 1950s and 1960s, first from pawn shops in Boston’s Scollay Square, later from galleries and dealers in Boston, New York, London, and Paris, and then during his travels to attend conferences around the world. He also enjoyed friendships with some notable artists, including George Nakashima (Wald wrote the introduction to Nakashima’s book The Soul of a Tree). His closest friend was the potter and sculptor Edwin Scheier (http://www.antiquesandthearts.com/the-modernist-pottery-of-mary-andedwin-scheier/), who hosted his second wedding and with whom he made annual trips to Mexico, visiting archeological sites and village artists. Wald’s collection was always a labor of love—he was searching for objects that spoke to him, that told stories, and that he wanted to live with, day in and day out, year after year. He occasionally loaned pieces for museum exhibitions, but never sold one during his lifetime. He regarded the carvings and sculptures as friends and companions, part of his life and his family. Wald’s wife and longtime research partner, Ruth Hubbard, was equally in love with beautiful objects, but her purchases were more often furniture—especially Danish modern, which she began buying during a postgraduate year in Copenhagen circa 1950. After Wald’s death in 1997, she continued to treasure the collection and kept it intact. Following her death in 2016 (covered in the New York Times Magazine’s annual “Lives They Lived”: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/21/magazine/the-lives-they-lived-ruth-hubbard. html), their children retained some favorite pieces, but decided to let others find new homes.
