As a pioneer of the documentary tradition in American photography, Walker Evans is one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. From the late 1920s to the early 1970s he recorded aspects of quotidian American life with a literalism and poetic poignancy unique to his vision. Evans’s principal subject was the vernacular—the shop signs, bedrooms, people in public settings, street debris, and rural churches that gave evidence of everyday life in rural America. Over the course of 50 years, Evans created not only “an encyclopedic visual catalogue of modern America in the making,” as noted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which holds the Walker Evans Archive of over 40,000 negatives and transparencies, but also an artistic approach that greatly influenced the evolution of documentary photography. Skinner is thrilled to offer this online auction of Walker Evans photographs. Works in the sale date from the 1930s to the early 1970s and come from a private Massachusetts collection by way of the Harry Lunn Gallery. Lunn was instrumental in establishing Evans’s place in the canon of photographic history by actively selling his prints

to collectors who would ultimately donate them to museums and institutions, as well as placing them with fellow

dealers, and thus landing thousands of works in public and private collections over the course of 25 years. Here we present the remainder of the archive that Harry Lunn acquired, including exhibition, work, and study prints. Because the material comes from Evans’s personal collection, in many ways it represents the images that were important to him, rather than those from the 1930s and 1940s that collectors have typically most desired, making the “lost pictures,” as photo historian Clark Worswick has described them, even more worthy of our attention.
