Our October sale includes horological icons: tall clocks from Thomas Harland, one of the most important Connecticut clockmakers, two rare monumental tall or “hall” clocks from Walter Durfee, Providence, Rhode Island, and a c. 1947 Longines stainless steel 13ZN flyback chronograph wristwatch with provenance that will intrigue. Also on offer are vintage and contemporary watches by Patek Philippe, Omega, IWC, Cartier, and Lemania. We also have an array of medical tools and teaching models, globes, marine instruments, and lenses to capture light on film or to investigate the microscopic world. A fine collection of fountain pens and a private collection of international aviation models round out the day. Not to be missed, the auction begins with five antique automobiles, including a 1963 Ford Thunderbird and a 1958 Cadillac Sedan DeVille.

Clocks Featuring works by Thomas Harland, two monumental tall clocks by Walter Durfee—a pattern 8 and pattern 21, both in mahogany cases—as well as a “Bras en l’Air” mystery clock by Rousseau, a collection of early Navy Chelsea deck clocks, the rare LeCoultre Brevets J. Reutter Atmos clock retailed by Tiffany featured on the cover, and other fine American and European clocks.

The William J. Young & Sons “Burt’s Solar Compass” that will be offered (shown above, left center) was not simply an attachment, but a stand-alone instrument designed to use the sun’s direction for surveying. From 1840, when the first solar compass was made by Young, until about 1880, it was the instrument of choice for public land surveys. From 1880 to about 1940, it was gradually replaced by transits with solar attachments. However, there were still a few old-time surveyors utilizing instruments in 1960 that differed in only minor details from that made by Young 120 years earlier. “Burt’s” solar compasses were used to survey most of the western U.S., and each one has its own history to tell.
