“The Collection of Billy Ahearn” lecture by Erik J. Goldstein Wednesday, October 31, 2018 | 274 Cedar Hill Street, Marlborough, MA 5:30PM Reception, 6PM Lecture Erik Goldstein is Senior Curator of Mechanical Arts & Numismatics at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He originally hails from New York City, and is a lifelong student of the numismatics, arms, military history, and the material culture of the 17th & 18th centuries. In the area of military history, he has lectured at the War College of the Seven Years War at Fort Ticonderoga and the Annual Guilford Courthouse Revolutionary War Lecture Series amongst numerous others. In addition to more than two dozen articles in both specialties, he has authored six books relating to antique weaponry and military history; The Bayonet in New France 1665-1760 (1997), The Socket Bayonet in the British Army 1687–1783 (2000), 18th Century Weapons of the Royal Welsh Fuziliers from Flixton Hall (2002), The Brown Bess, an Identification Guide (2010), Ray’s Story, A Lost Air Gunner of the 454th Bomb Group (2013), and most recently The Swords of George Washington, published in early 2016. Goldstein’s awards include the “Man at Arms Cup” for outstanding service to the field of Arms & Armor in 1997, the Numismatic Literary Guild’s Best Article award for 2010, and an honorary Doctorate of Numismatics from the Florence Schook School of Numismatics at the American Numismatic Association.

Provenance The Collection of Billy Ahearn | Lots 1–55 I’ve known many “Williams” in my life, but I don’t think I’ve ever met one who was more a “Billy” than my good friend. With shoulders like a brick wall and a ferocious 19th century moustache, to my history-focused mind Billy Ahearn had the look and bearing of a Tammany Hall enforcer from the Boss Tweed days. A Vietnam War veteran, New York City fireman and master saloon keeper, his booming voice and distinct New York way of expressing himself added to the unforgettable and endearing personality he truly was. If you love American colonial history, and the firearms used during that era, then chances are that Billy was your friend too. Remarkably humble, he was probably never aware that he’d become an integral part of a new, pioneering generation of military arms collectors and scholars. Billy’s first book, Muskets of the Revolution and the French & Indian Wars, published in 2005, marked a radical departure from the works of authors like Dr. DeWitt Bailey and George Neumann. While these gentlemen focused on typology, production, and technologic evolution, Billy wrote about history and used the guns themselves to illustrate America’s colonial wars. He could take an academically classified “Pattern 1742 Land Service Musket” and transform it into a metal and wood witness to the Siege of Fort William Henry, an event immortalized in James Fennimore Cooper’s Last of the Mohicans. Billy’s unique way of plugging a firearm into its historical contexts magnified both its significance and intrigue, making it ripe for sharing with other antique arms aficionados. Billy’s unwavering desire to share his treasures concludes with this final act. Successful bidders will earn the privilege of caring for and preserving the artifacts he loved so much. I can see him smiling broadly with great pleasure as these important relics of America’s early days pass on to their new, like-minded custodians. The Collection of David F. Post | Lots 56–223 David F. Post was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on September 10, 1915. He moved to Swampscott, Massachusetts, and graduated high school in the Class of 1954. He later served in the National Guard. In 1970, he and his family moved to Plaistow, New Hampshire, and established State Line Kennel. In 1974 he started State Line Tack Shop, a discount horse tack store that made equestrian riding affordable to all. In the 1980s, his business became one of the largest retail and mail order companies in the country. He enjoyed woodworking and carving, fishing, hunting, collecting and restoring antique automobiles. He was an accomplished bird-dog trainer and enjoyed taking part in competitive trials. Of his many passions, collecting antique Colt revolvers and Winchester lever-action rifles was high on the list— he amassed a collection of both high-end collector pieces as well as examples he liked to shoot. He was proud of his collection and it was on display for visitors to his home to see and study. Skinner is honored to offer his extensive collection at auction.

Provenance: The Thomas Reiley collection.

Note: The gun was found in a barn in Massachusetts and was sold by Norm Flayderman in 1978. May 21, 1774, returns of the Kings Own Regiment show that guns were issued to them on January 19th, 1765. There is a good possibility that this gun saw service on April 19th, 1775, the first day of the American Revolution. The light infantry and grenadier companies were on the expedition to Concord that day. The grenadier companies carried the 1756 long land pattern musket, as did the battalion companies that marched out of Boston with Percy’s relief column. With the gun is a binder with information about the gun including the original catalog listing and the restoration work that was done on the gun. $5,000-7,000

N.B. Born in Austria, de Weldon established himself early in his career as a sculptor in Vienna and London. He moved to the U.S. in 1938 and became a citizen in 1945. His most notable work is the bronze Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington Cemetery, which remains “the most famous monument of World War II” (Reynolds 161). Serving in the Navy in WWII, de Weldon was inspired by Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of six American soldiers raising a flag at Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima. He made a small sculpture of the figure group using local materials, gaining the attention of his commanding officer and eventually of the U.S. Congress, which commissioned him to create the Arlington Cemetery monument, 48 feet in height, which was dedicated in 1954. $400-600

Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold â&#x20AC;&#x153;as is,â&#x20AC;? and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser. 5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank.
