Provenance The James G. Swan Collection Born in Medford, Massachusetts, James G. Swan (1818-1900) went to California during the gold rush in 1849. After working in San Francisco for two years and publishing two articles in the California Courier, he traveled north to the Washington Territory. Working amongst the Makah tribe in Neah Bay for a number of years, Swan established a rapport with his Native American neighbors, learning the language, recording the jargon, and learning about the culture. A skilled observer with a keen interest in ethnography, Swan published The Northwest Coast; or, Three years’ Residence in Washington Territory in 1857. His knowledge of the local population eventually led to his hiring as a personal secretary to Isaac I. Stevens in Washington, DC, supporting Stevens’s work in writing Indian treaties. Returning to Washington Territory in 1859, he followed Stevens’s suggestion to relocate to the thriving commercial center Port Townsend. Working with Indian agent Henry A. Webster amidst the Makah tribe in Neah Bay, Swan bolstered his knowledge of tribal legends, continued his writing, and worked as a schoolteacher on the reservation. Always gifted artistically, the Makah tribal members gave him the nickname “Cha-tic,” meaning “the painter.” Swan also collected many Indian artifacts especially for the Smithsonian Institute, and for displays at several major exhibitions. In 1875, the Smithsonian provided funds for him to travel to Alaska and purchase items for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, including totem poles, a 60-foot canoe, and an entire lodge that Swan had built, as well as many smaller artifacts.
Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society The Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society is located in the county seat of Easton, Pennsylvania. The NCHGS was organized at the turn of the 20th century and incorporated in 1910. As the Society’s collection outgrew its original space in an old stone schoolhouse, larger quarters became necessary. During the next decade, the Society moved and eventually settled in the 1833 Mixsell homestead. In 2010, the stateof-the-art Sigal Museum opened to the public. The purpose of the Society is to discover, collect, promote, and preserve art, culture, and history made in Northampton County. The Society has been collecting American Indian artifacts since its inception. Some of their holdings were collected by Dr. Edward Swift (1805-1869). From the draft copy of the Diary of Beates R. Swift – A Year in the Life of an Easton Youth during the Civil War: “Dr. Edward Swift was a wealthy physician and a scholar-collector of Native American artifacts, an amateur geologist, and a passionate abolitionist. Dr. Swift and his son together and separately combed the county for arrowheads, scrapers, and stone axe heads.” Artifact hunting trips and the fruits of the searches are frequently noted in the diary: “Family back from Lancaster, father has lots of Indian points.” Beates often added his finds to his father’s collection which he called “our Indian curiosities” and spent hours in the family library helping his father catalog their findings. The Reverend Arthur Santmier (1881-1951) was another enthusiastic collector and benefactor. Santmier was a pastor of the Society of Friends and was widely known among American Quakers. Originally from Herkimer County, New York, he was a missionary in northern Canada until World War I, when he served with the Friends Service Committee in Europe under President Hoover. Santmier published the culturally notable Glimpses of the Northland; Sketches of Life Among the Cree and Salteaux Indians in 1905. Other notable collectors who donated to the Society were Carl Aicher (1888-1941) and William M. Davis.
