Rare Marblehead Vase, Massachusetts, c. 1909, landscape vase in the style of Arthur Wesley Dow depicting haystacks in a marsh, designed by Annie E. Aldrich and decorated by Sarah Tutt; made by John Swallow, marked with an “M” and partial “P” flanking a sailing ship and the letters “A” and “T” beneath the Marblehead mark, ht. 8 1/2, dia. of mouth 4 3/4 in.

One of three known examples, two others are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Two Red Roses Foundation, Palm Harbor, Florida.

Dr. Herbert Hall started the Marblehead Pottery in 1904, as therapy for patients at his Devereux Sanitarium. His therapeutic workshop evolved into a business, and in 1915, Arthur Baggs took over the production operation and continued to produce the pottery until 1936. Marblehead pottery is characterized by its simplicity of form and decoration, as well as its distinctive matte glazes.

The sale includes Danish modern furniture collected in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s by MIT Professor of Theoretical Physics Kenneth A. Johnson, while living in Copenhagen, as well as the original contents of a New York City penthouse designed and furnished by Associated Designers for Interiors in 1960.

Claude Conover is essentially a self-taught potter known for his exploration of a single form, the bottle/vase. After retiring from commercial design, Conover devoted himself to his studio practice. His pieces are large scale and characterized by short cylindrical neck and mouth approximately centered on the vessel’s shoulder. The pieces are coil- and slab- built using stoneware and are typically variations on classical forms.

The monochromatic surfaces are usually left unglazed and are finished with saw blade scratched or stamped motifs or covered with linear and geometric designs created using a sgraffito technique. Often the sgraffito is so pronounced that it creates an overall textured surface.
