Asian Works of Art 3285B | Saturday, September 14, 2019 | 10AM | Boston

Asian Works of Art Skinner’s September Asian Works of Art sale brings together the best of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian art from estates and private collections in New England and beyond. Aficionados of Asian art will discover an attractive range of Chinese ceramics, from early masterpieces such as a Han pottery prancing horse to pieces from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. In response to the growing market for Chinese jade, we are offering many fine small carvings and decorative objects in addition to a magnificent pair of jade vessels purchased in 2006 from Skinner, originally from the collection of a prominent family. Multiple private textile collections of robes, collars, skirts, and rank badges among others have been combined to present a comprehensive survey of late Qing dynasty textiles. Two exceptional examples of Japanese cloisonné work by Hayashi and Ando are also featured. Korean art includes a selection of exemplary ceramics from the late Goryeo to Joseon periods. A finely detailed portrait of an official by Chae Yongshin is the highlight of a group of Korean paintings. We are excited to bring over 200 Japanese prints from various private collections to auction as an online-only timed auction. There are works to satisfy every collector’s taste and decorative need—classic Ukiyo-e images can be found alongside striking contemporary artwork.

Objects traditionally found on a scholar’s table might include writing implements and tools such as wrist rests, as well as jades or small carvings that celebrated the beauty of nature through fine craftsmanship. These carefully selected items were the tangible, decorative focus and evidence of a scholar’s individual taste and appreciation of the arts.
