Clocks, Watches & Scientific Instruments 3295M | Friday, October 11, 2019 | 10AM | Marlborough, MA

Clocks, Watches & Scientific Instruments Our October sale comprises a range of horological curiosities and rare timepieces. A stainless steel Rolex 8171 or “Padellone” triple calendar wristwatch, a Tornek-Rayville TR-900 dive wristwatch, and a pristine example of a double-signed Patek Philippe 18kt gold automatic wristwatch reference 2526 highlight our watches, with strong examples from the golden age of American watchmaking by houses such as Waltham, Hamilton, and Elgin also on offer. Clocks include an early example of a figure-eight timepiece from Aaron Willard Jr., a form that was possibly the predecessor of the E. Howard figure-eight wall regulators; a Thomas Parker, Philadelphia, bracket clock with a pinwheel escapement; and a Robert Ward musical bracket clock with eight bells and sixteen hammers in its original chinoiserie-decorated case. We also have a small collection of eight-day wooden-works Connecticut shelf clocks. Scientific instruments include a 19th century floor standing vacuum pump with Boston provenance, an 18th century Lebbeus Dod brass protractor and parallel rule from Mendham, New Jersey; the second part of two private surveying collections; and a fine selection of navigational, medical, and musical box instruments.

Omega Split Second Chronograph, or Rattrapante "Olympic" Timing Watch Unusual LeCoultre Wrist Alarm and a Pocket Watch Set

OMEGA The Omega split second chronograph, or rattrapante “Olympic” timing watch, is a horological curiosity. The rattrapante feature was designed by Lemania prior to Omega acquiring them in the 1930s. These watches were introduced in 1966 in anticipation of the 1968 summer Olympics held in Mexico. They house the caliber 1131 movement and are used for timing dual contestants in the same race or lap times. The design includes a no-slip watch case, anti-reflective crystal coating, and hard plastic outer case with shoulder strap. This example is marked “G. Perren Brig,” possibly the time person or judge for a specific event. The subseconds and the top edge of the outer red case are marked “13.”

The Collection of the Late William H. Skerritt, Part II Skerritt was an artist, philanthropist, writer, and scholar—educated as a geologist at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, he became an authority in aggregates and pavement skid resistance but his passion lay in his extensive work with the Rensselaer Historical Society and Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, promoting the importance of Troy, New York’s, history, architecture, and community. President of the Gateway and Troy Architectural Projects, he helped support the restoration of Troy’s architectural treasures. He gathered and presented an annotated collection of his own drawings and prints of Troy called “Troy as I See It” and he coauthored the book The Great Fire of Troy. His passion for history’s objects spurred collecting in many genres, and Skinner is proud to offer the first part of his important historical collection of Troy’s instrument makers’ work, as well as documents and archive material. These include Hanks’ family instruments, Meneely family pieces, and of course his collection of Gurley Precision Instrument Company items, from rare surveying instruments to early manuals and catalogs including William Gurley’s 1873 personal copy of American Engineer’s & Surveyor’s Instruments.
