The Pamela and Brian Ehrlich Collection, Mystic, Connecticut, Part I Lots 65–156 for more material from this collection, please see lots 1019-1043 in online sale 3303T at www.skinnerinc.com

Over forty-five years we have made our way ever deeper into America’s past— from living in Chicago with the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Mies van der Rohe, to Boston during the Bicentennial, we finally made our home in a 1777 farm house in Mystic, Connecticut. Built by Nathan Stanton, a member of one of the founding families of the area, the house spoke to us, guiding the direction of our collecting and research to focus on New England—especially on New London County, Connecticut. This region was uniquely situated to serve as a crossroads of Colonial America, with influences from all of New England decorative arts coming together to create a “quirky,” recognizable style. We delved into finding the stories of the long-ago people who created, used, and enjoyed the furniture and artworks we brought home. Many times we were surprised and delighted when serendipitously we discovered connections between objects in our collection. It seemed that we were bringing things together in meaningful ways. In the process, we have had the privilege of meeting, being mentored by, and working with many knowledgeable, wonderful people associated with the various fields of Americana. We have made cherished friendships with dealers, collectors, researchers, and artisans. And beyond being collectors, we have become researchers and storytellers with the aim of passing on an appreciation and love for American art and history to future generations. It has now come time to pass on a portion of our life to you who share our interests. We offer a part of our hearts. —The Erlichs

The Collection of Tom and Carolyn Porter, Delaware, Ohio Lots 400–603 for more material from this collection, please see lots 1044-1191 in online sale 3303T at www.skinnerinc.com

Tom and I met on a blind date. We were set up by my brother and his sister. Neither one of us were exactly enthusiastic about meeting each other, but curiosity won out. Webster’s defines curiosity as: 1. A strong desire to know or learn something.

2. A strange or unusual object or fact.

Our curiosity led us to each other and to our calling…antiques. The world of antiques is one huge curiosity. Meeting Garth Oberlander and subsequently partnering with him at Garth’s Auctions was a curiosity seeker’s dream. Our adventures at Garth’s afforded us a lifetime of learning and discovery and it was not just about the objects themselves, but about the people who collected them, too. 401

Tom and I were incredibly fortunate to know Bob and Nancy Skinner, not only as contemporaries in the auction business, but as friends and collectors. Our family values and business principles aligned. Stephen Fletcher is part of the Skinner family, just as all the employees at Garth’s were part of our family. LaGina Austin has the distinction of being part of both families. I am grateful to know that our collection is in good hands.

403 402

404

There is only one joy that has superseded our passion for antiques; our daughters Helen, Sally, Sammi, and Susie, our son-in-law Tom Flynn, and our grandchildren Atticus, Caleb, Olivia, and Luke. We wish you a lifetime of love and curiosity. —Carolyn Porter, February, 2018 400

The Collection of Pam Boynton, Groton, Massachusetts Lots 604–725

for more material from this collection, please see lots 1192-1263 in online sale 3303T at www.skinnerinc.com

I met Pam Boynton many years ago as a young man traveling with Bob Skinner. We visited Pam in Groton, Massachusetts, fairly regularly and met many of her customers—luminaries in the dealer and collecting world. I remember selling Pam a miniature blue-painted six-board chest that I found at the Amherst, New Hampshire, flea market that was to reside in her bedroom for many years. I found her to be forthright, a little intimidating, wickedly funny, and always informative. Many a fine collection of country furniture, folk art, and colorful objects of quality were curated and sold by Pam. Our thanks go to Martha Boynton who has been so helpful in honoring her mom’s wishes that her collection be sold at Skinner in Marlborough. —Stephen Fletcher 604 Salmon Red-painted Oval-top Tea Table, New England, mid-18th century, on splayed vase- and ring-turned legs joined by beaded apron and box stretchers, old surface, (imperfections), ht. 24 1/2, wd. 34 1/2, dp. 24 1/2 in.
