American Furniture & Decorative Arts This April’s American Furniture & Decorative Arts auction, and its online counterpart, offer an opportunity to acquire fine early American urban-made furniture from two Massachusetts private collections, the roots of which began in the 1930s and which represent over a hundred years of combined connoisseurship. Furniture deaccessioned from Historic Deerfield complements the group with a number of more vernacular pieces.

Also featured in the sale is a collection of historical blue Staffordshire in many rare patterns; an extraordinary lifetime collection from Flushing, New York, of cast iron signage, architectural elements, and other objects, highlighted by a Statue of Liberty.

From other Northeastern collections come notable collections of salt-glazed 18th century Nottingham and Staffordshire pottery, 18th century American silver, early needlework, and folk art. A group of locally rooted antiques descended in the family of William and Abigail Bromfield Phillips of Boston includes a pair of portraits of that 18th century couple by Boston painter John Greenwood, an inlaid and carved sideboard by John and Thomas Seymour, and an impressive portrait of the 1708 Faneuil-Phillips House on Beacon Hill, painted in 1835. Folk portraiture is represented well by a charming portrait of a boy by William Kennedy, and a portrait of a serene young woman in an Empire-waisted pink dress by John Brewster Jr. The Americana online sale features much of the aforementioned collection of iron, a great variety of early woven and quilted textiles, and examples of American furniture, silver, pottery, and folk art from the collections above, and more.

Skinner is pleased to offer an extraordinary collection of blue transfer-decorated Staffordshire pottery made for the American market. Such pottery was very popular in America for a few decades around the second quarter of the 19th century, and examples in this sale are made by the best firms: Enoch Wood & Son, Thomas Mayer, Ralph and James Clews, and Stevenson & Williams. Most impressive is an array of forms decorated with “States’ Arms”—a large platter with the Arms of New Jersey, a small platter with the Arms of Massachusetts, a covered vegetable dish with the Arms of Virginia, a pitcher with the Arms of Maryland, and plates with the Arms of New York and Rhode Island. Another standout is the platter showing a steamboat and a bustling port marked on the reverse “Detroit.” In total, the collection is the best group we’ve offered in decades.
