Pop Art Pop Art takes its name from the integration of popular culture into fine art, and is most closely associated with the New York art scene starting in the late 1950s. Pop Art was, in part, a subversive response to the dominant movement of the time: Abstract Expressionism. In the aftermath of World War II, the Abstract Expressionists had rejected traditional representational art as elitist. In their view, it required a sophisticated knowledge of history, religious iconography, and classical myths and legends to understand most of the artworks in museums. Segments of the viewing public, however, found the lack of narrative and obvious craftsmanship even more inaccessible. Pop Art’s reaction was to create representational art with a twist: works based on familiar, even mundane, subjects accessible to everyone through the increasingly widespread mediums of print advertising, movies, and television. Given the ubiquitous and repetitious nature of popular cultural images, print media have an obvious kinship with Pop, and this sale features several stunning examples that exemplify the diversity of artists and images that are included in the category of Pop Art.

208 Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski (Polish, 1849-1915), The Daring Escape/A Coaching Scene, oil Wierusz-Kowalski was born in the small Polish village of Suwalki. The surrounding countryside was punctuated with woodlands and lakes. At the age of 16 his family moved to the slightly more cultured city of Kalisz. Within three years he had settled in Warsaw, where he began his artistic studies. His training ultimately took him to the Art Academy in Dresden.

If the academy’s training was less than stellar, the surrounding area exposed him to the great 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters. In 1873 he moved to Munich to study, and it is there that he spent much of his career. Initially Wierusz-Kowalski favored subjects of courtly figures in 18th century garb, but these slowly shifted toward equestrian subjects of hunters and warriors. Around 1880 his style reached its maturity, and his subjects became aligned with the rural Polish life of his childhood. $175,000-225,000

Hudson River School

The Hudson River School of painting is arguably the first truly American style of painting. Up until the 1820s and 1830s, painting in America was a response to the styles and ideals of Europe. While Europe would continue to hold sway over the tastes of the American public and the styles of her artists, the Hudson River School painters had a uniquely American vision. Their jumping off point was European Romanticism, and in particular the expression of the spiritual and the sublime that the Romantics stirred in the emotional heart with their wild and sometime violent landscapes. In American hands—depicting places that were utterly new and unexplored— these landscape paintings captured a truly wild and untamed nature; at once recording real and identifiable locations and showing them to be unsullied by man: benevolent and beautiful. Unlike their European kin, these landscapes were filtered through the philosophical lenses of the Transcendentalists. The power of nature was able to heal the soul of man, and man, in turn, was at his best when truly alone and self-reliant in nature.
