A very fine Kashmir sapphire leads an important collection of antique and Edwardian jewelry, which includes pieces by T.B. Starr and Tiffany & Co. We are excited to offer jewelry from the estate of Mary Weld Pingree, “Boston’s Richest Girl.” Her home, “The Weld House,” considered the grandest Georgian Revival house in Boston, still stands on Bay State Road. There is also a stunning collection of 1950s diamond jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, the highlight of which is a 23.98 cts. diamond ring. Rare Baroque Pearl, Emerald, and Pink Sapphire Ring, Marie Zimmermann, by 1922.
Note: Pictured in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, p. 208. This ring was also one of five pictured in Hanna Tachau’s article on Zimmermann in International Studio, January 1922. Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), metalsmith, jeweler, and designer, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the Packer Collegiate Institute, Art Students’ League, and Pratt Institute.
Her diverse influences included Egyptian, Classical, and Chinese forms, and she experimented with these motifs. She ran her studio at the National Arts Club in New York City from around 1910 to 1937. Her eclectic work is held by numerous museums in the United States including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. $15,000-20,000

The three pieces above are from the estate of Mary Weld Pingree (1901-1978), the founder of the Pingree School in South Hamilton. She was the heir to the Weld estate and was called “Boston’s richest girl” by newspapers in the 1910s.
