SHORT CYCLING BREAKS

SHORT BUT SWEET

CYCLING BREAKS

FRIDAY

While we’d all like to escape for at least a week or two, it can sometimes be tricky to find the time. Short breaks are a great way to fill the gap - to give you a booster shot of relaxation in lieu of a longer trip.

B

oth BSpoke Tours and Cycling for Softies offer bite-sized cycling breaks of three nights or more - perfect for outdoorsy types who find it hard to get away from the office. If you're thinking about exploring, here are two of our top destinations for a cycling short break: one for those who love to take it easy, and one for those who love a challenge.

Coastal Pedalling This short, leisurely tour along the sparkling Portuguese coast follows part of the Ecovia do litoral (EcoWay) that links Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border with Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres) in the west, taking you through traditional towns such as Tavira, Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Olhao. Meander across stunning nature-protected terrain, potter around charming fishing villages and explore beautiful beaches. You'll enjoy getting to know a very diverse coastline - diving into the shining ocean whenever you desire.

Conquer Mont Ventoux Challenge yourself over a long weekend to climb one of the Tour de France’s most iconic mountains, Mont Ventoux. Known as the ‘Giant of Provence’ and standing at 1,912m, the mountain dominates the landscape and can be spotted from miles around. It has been featured in the Tour de France 14 times since it was first built into the route in 1951. On the second day you will pass the Tommy Simpson memorial as you tackle the climb from Bedoin and on day three you will climb from Malaucene, being rewarded with spectacular views over the Alps and another thrilling descent.

Good for the soul, as well as your legs! REASONS

TO INDULGE IN EASY PEDALLING, FROM ONE GOURMET FEAST TO ANOTHER A Cycling for Softies holiday is all about the destination. The gorgeous places to stay. The gourmet food along the way. Easy pedalling, long lunches. Sitting back to relax after a gentle afternoon ride, glass of fine wine in hand. Minimal effort, maximum indulgence. Below, we sum up what sets a Cycling for Softies holiday apart from the rest and why it’s just that extra bit special.

1

2

Leisurely cycling

Fine dining

Forget Lycra, drop handlebars and hair-pin climbs. This is about taking it easy in the saddle. Expect largely flat, meandering cycle routes around the beautiful winelands of France and Italy. Carefully chosen for ultimate ease they allow you to truly make the most of all the lovely spots to stop, explore and relax. Think of the cycling part of your holiday as gentle transport from one delicious meal to another, complete with dazzling views and a healthy intake of fresh air.

Hugely popular with foodies, our holidays are all about dining in style. Our experts have carefully researched the best restaurants in each region, which is why your cycle route will take you straight to the door of many a special lunch-stop and many of the hotels have been especially chosen for their in-house restaurants and culinary delights. Fresh pasta in Tuscany, coq au vin in Bordeaux, truffles in Provence... and all without the guilt after a day’s cycling.

GEORGE, ACTIVITIES EXPERT “One of the highlights on our Tuscany and the Chianti Hills tour is the plaza in Greve, lined with artisan shops and restaurants. Next, head to the medieval town of Radda, for rich boar stew, some famous Chianti wine and Tuscan prosciutto from the Pratomagno mountains at Bar Enoteca Dante."

12

3

Luxury accommodation On a Softies holiday you'll only stay in luxurious hotels: boutique 3-star hotels, 4-star villas tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, and super luxe 5-star châteaux in the heart of Provence. This means every day in the saddle ends with a fabulous evening meal and somewhere lovely to rest your head. Our experts have personally researched and stayed at these fabulous properties to ensure that you cycle like a softie but sleep like a king.

4

For an extra boost, why not try an e-bike? If sitting back and enjoying the view with barely a finger (or a foot) lifted is your idea of wonderful, an e-bike could become your best friend. Hugely popular with Softies guests, they take all the puff out of the hill, allowing you to glide effortlessly up - particularly useful in more hilly regions such as Tuscany and Provence. Delivering power smoothly and progressively, they’re easy to use and lots of fun too. MARTON, ACTIVITIES EXPERT “An e-bike gives you exercise without the exhaustion - even if it's just so you can take in the views properly, and arrive at the top of the hill with plenty of energy left to explore what you find there. It's a lot of fun too - covering a lot of ground each day and whizzing along at up to 30kmph is a great way to travel!"

What’s in a Softies holiday? • Tailor-made as standard • Freedom to cycle at your own pace • Fabulous 3 to 5-star hotel accommodation • Bed & breakfast + gourmet evening meals • Expert on-the-spot support • Your luggage carried to the next hotel • Itinerary, maps and notes + GPS on request • Fully serviced touring bikes with water bottles, panniers and puncture repair kits

5

ROAD CYCLING

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE LYCRA Ideal for cyclists with the need for a bit more speed and some tougher climbs. Take to the road in your most aero kit for a glorious, smooth ride!

T

hanks to British cyclist Geraint Thomas claiming victory in the 2018 Tour de France (just one of many hugely successful British cyclists in recent years), road cycling has taken off as an amateur leisure pastime. It’s a great way to get a significant workout - and with the bike supporting your weight, the impact on your muscles and joints is low compared to running. If you’ve got a competitive spirit (even if it's just trying to beat your own personal best), it’s great hitting the road solo, or as part of a team in a peloton. Above all, if you love nothing more than clocking up the miles, it's a brilliant way to travel. More miles means even more amazing scenery as you fly along smooth tarmac - and, of course, it’s the perfect excuse to don lycra from helmet to cleat.

French hot spots for foodies and wine lovers

Acres of vineyards, beautiful countryside, picturesque châteaux, towering mountains and of course, some of the best wine and food in the world. With France's varied terrain, it’s also a great place for activity holidays. Our experts have summed up their favourite French food and wine hotspots where they love to cycle, hike and then relax with some incredible cuisine and delicious wines without any of the guilt.

16

Discover. Explore. Relax.

LoveLy Loire

This region is famous for its generous amount of elegant châteaux that punctuate the lush local scenery of fruiting vineyards and shimmering rivers. A picture perfect example of France at its best. For foodies, a local delicacy is Fouée which is a bread that has a similar taste to brioche and is best served with rilettes, a coarse paté made from pork, salmon or duck. Au Chapeau Rouge in Chinon is a cosy little spot and a firm favourite with our experts. It's named after the red caps worn by the Royal Mail service, and you'll find a selection of local dishes including succulent wild fish and pork with red wine and pear here. After a long lunch, travel down the road to the town of Saumur, where you’ll find vineyards with the perfect conditions for producing sparkling Brut.

Perfect Provence Take a leisurely trundle through this striking landscape, with its attractive hilltop villages, lavender fields and rolling olive groves. With local produce including almonds, cherries, apricots and pears, this feels like an Eden of fresh goodness.

Whilst you’re here, why not try rich stews and traditional ratatouille or for a light bite some delicious homemade tapenade. Bouillabaisse is also a local favourite and includes a minimum of four types of fish with a tangy, spicy flavour. Finally, wash all this deliciousness down with a glass or two of pale rosé, the region’s speciality. Provence has been producing wines of all kinds for over 2,500 years, since Greek traders first visited in the 7th century BC, so if you prefer red or white to rosé then you will be spoilt for choice.

Beautiful Bordeaux

BRAND NEW ROUTES AVAILABLE FOR 2019

This southern area of France is arguably one of the best-known wine regions in the world, and the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines came from here. Over 90% of the types produced are red, with deep currant, plum and earthy cedar-tasting notes. Once you’ve chosen your tipple, team it with traditional dishes such as beef bourguignon, coq au vin and roasted veal. Poached eggs in red wine sauce is also one not to be missed. Our experts always make sure that they spend an evening in L'Abricotier in Saint-Macaire. Its elegant setting is ideal for a laid-back lunch or evening indulgence and the fillet served on a bed of Jerusalem artichokes with fresh truffle is an absolute must.

Amazing Alsace

This north eastern region has so much history sprinkled into its famous dishes. Due to the Alsace's changing ‘ownership’, the cuisine here is defined by both German and French influences – making a rich and tasty mix. The most authentic eateries here are ‘Winstube’, meaning ‘wine rooms’. Although this translation captures none of their charm and cosiness; they’re perfect for spending an afternoon or evening relaxing. Try specialities like foie gras d'Alsace, served with lentils, sauerkraut and tarte flambée all washed down with the region’s speciality: white wine. The vineyards here are sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, and experience some of the driest weather in France. 92% of the wine produced here is white, with the most popular varieties including Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer.
