Welcome Guest Editor Arnie Wilson introduces this year’s Preview for Winter 18/19

I

’ve never skied with Chemmy Alcott - much as I’d love to. But I fear that unlike previous celebrities I’ve talked to on behalf of Ski Solutions (Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Heston Blumenthal, both of whom I could at least keep up with) Chemmy would leave me struggling to get anywhere near her in a maelstrom of swirling powder. There again she might take pity on me - rather like the great Franz Klammer used to do - and ski slowly just for me.

Still in France, a new hotel in Val d’Isère, Le Refuge du Solaise, will be the highest in the French Alps (at 2,551m/8,370ft) when it opens - also in December. Remember the old Solaise cable car arrival station? The hotel has been converted from that. And the only way up to it now will be the new Solaise gondola. At this height, not only can guests immediately access Val’s superb upper slopes - but they can enjoy many hours of extra sunshine every day.

What Chemmy and her fellow race-ace husband Dougie Crawford do on their CDC Ski Club courses for would-be racers is, in a way, a little like what Ski Solutions do for their clients: they know how to take care of all the important details to make their holidays run as smoothly as possible.

Ever thought about combining great skiing with visiting an exciting city? There are many choices but you honestly would be hard pressed to beat Heavenly, the magnificent ski area above the shores of the spectacular Lake Tahoe, and a visit to San Francisco. Equally superb is combining Canada’s top resort of Whistler Blackcomb with an outing to the spectacular city of Vancouver. If you’re going to go all that way to ski, you really shouldn’t miss such opportunities - if you can tear yourself away, that is, from such exhilarating slopes!

Meanwhile, out in the mountains, nothing stays quite the same and no resort can rest on its laurels. Resorts are continuously developing, with new runs, new ski areas, new lifts, and new technology. While I was skiing in Val Thorens last winter, I noticed that the resort had recently come up with some clever new technical systems to reduce lift-lines and generally make life easier and safer on the slopes. A new ‘Ski Flux' system uses sensors to measure the flow of skiers and provide real-time information on how busy the slopes are. This information is shown via easy-to-read icons on large multi-coloured screens at the top of some lifts. This should help you avoid the crowds and find the best snow conditions. And all the resort’s ski patrollers now also carry a GPS locator beacon in their equipment. This coming winter I’ll be checking out a big new area that’s being opened up in December by another French resort, La Rosière. Two new six-seater chairlifts and new terrain to go with them will certainly enhance the Espace San Bernardo ski area the resort shares with La Thuile on the Italian side of the border. The new development, with five new red runs and more freeriding terrain, will mean the resort’s highest lift will increase in altitude from around 2,640m to 2,800m, increasing the skiable vertical to around 1,350m.

A word or two about the new Ikon pass, which covers 27 North American resorts, and is set to rival Vail’s Epic Pass. I was lucky enough to win an Ikon pass earlier this year at a ski gathering in London. Having skied, over the years, in every US state with skiing (all 38 of them), I wondered whether to give it to a more deserving candidate. But then I noticed one resort out of the 27 that I hadn’t ever been to: Blue Mountain. Although the vertical drop is only 220m (720ft) with 42 runs, 16 chairlifts and three freestyle parks, one run a mile long, and 95% snowmaking, it’s Ontario’s largest mountain village resort, perched on the shores of Southern Georgian Bay and spanning the impressive Niagara Escarpment. So that’s one intriguing resort I’ll be heading for this coming winter before I give my Ikon pass to someone. I’ll let you know how it goes!

After 15 years with the FT, Arnie Wilson edited Ski+board magazine for 13 years. He has skied in 729 resorts, including 40 heliskiing locations, and all 38 US skiing states.

he world-renowned brand La Folie Douce are opening their first flagship property in December 2018. La Folie Douce Hotel will sit in the heart of Chamonix, in an enviable ski-in skiout location, with the Brévent ski area right on the doorstep. Featuring 250 rooms, the hotel will lend itself particularly well to groups, with rooms sleeping up to four people. In addition to the hotel’s three restaurants, there is a fabulous spa with an impressive outdoor swimming pool nestled in the shadow of Mont Blanc and yoga classes taking place out in the valley. Of course, a Folie Douce hotel wouldn’t be complete without the unique après scene the brand has long been famous for. After the lifts shut, the hotel’s aprèsski bar will come to life, with dancers, singers and musicians getting the crowds going. If the existing Folie Douce bars are anything to go by, a stay at this hotel will certainly be one to remember.

he French resort of La Rosière is unveiling a new ski area for December 2018; Mont Valaisan. The new area will offer more advanced, technical skiing, with five new red runs, and it will boost the resort's highest elevation to 2,800m, giving La Rosière a more snow-sure top altitude. Two new six-seater lifts servicing the area will also provide much easier access to some incredible off-piste terrain. In total, the resort has invested €15 million into the project, which will no doubt increase La Rosière’s appeal to intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders.

All in all, the pass covers an area of 64,000 skiable acres, with a total of 3,354 trails and all types of terrain you can imagine, from steep, deep powder chutes and long cruisy blues, to Alpine bowls and acres of backcountry. very unusual accommodation is set to open in La Plagne this winter. For a romantic night with a difference, guests can sleep under the stars in - wait for it - their own private piste basher. Over the Moon is parked up at 2,400m, and it's a piste basher like no other, with a queen-sized bed and panoramic windows overlooking the mountains and starry night sky. The evening starts with a short journey in a chauffeur-driven Jaguar from your hotel to the base of Plagne Bellecôte, followed by a ride up the mountain in a working snowgroomer to reach your accommodation. Arguably one of the most exclusive hotel rooms out there, this is the perfect setting to watch the sun set over the mountain.

pening in Val d'Isère for December 2018, this unique hotel is set to become the highest in the French Alps, sitting at an astonishing 2,551m. Its fantastic, elevated spot means guests will benefit from five hours more sun per day than at any other property in the resort. Converted from the former Solaise cable car arrival station, Le Refuge de Solaise is set to become the ultimate ski-in ski-out location, with direct access to the upper slopes of Val d'Isère and the chance to carve fresh tracks every morning. The hotel is accessible only by the new Solaise gondola so once the lifts shut, guests are left to enjoy an epic winter paradise all of their own, a world away from the town below.

CHEMMY ALCOTT B R I TA I N ’ S M O S T SUCCESSFUL FEMALE SKIER Interview by Arnie Wilson

C

himene “Chemmy” Alcott, World Cup Alpine ski racer, scarcely needs an introduction. Britain’s most famous and successful female skier was named after Sophia Loren's character in the 1961 film El Cid. She started skiing when she was just 18 months old on a family holiday in Flaine, and first raced at the age of three. In 1993 she won the Etoile D'Or French Village Ski Championship, became a member of the British Junior Alpine team in 1994 and won the 1995 Sunday Times Junior Sportswoman of the Year award. She would later compete in all five disciplines: downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom, and combined. Chemmy raced in four Winter Olympic Games and seven FIS World Championships, was overall Senior British National Champion seven times and British Ladies Champion eight times. She retired from international competition after the 2014 season but has certainly not eased up on her skiing schedule, in spite of giving birth to a baby boy, Lochlan - better known as Locki - in January 2017 (guess what - it was snowing at the time). Here I talk to Chemmy about her last year, next winter season and everything in between.

How was last winter for you, Chemmy? - and lots of funny ones. I had the It was a whirlwind. I definitely spent more opportunity, sitting next to Olympic and days on snow than off. Between coaching World Champions, to get lessons in their young whippersnappers for our club, CDC sports. But, for the first time in a long time, I Only then did I realise he was dragging his am hosting a heli-ski trip in March to Alagna, feet and so I was taking his whole weight! which is just the best job in the world. I can't wait! Did you enjoy helping the Ski Sunday team cover the Winter Olympics in South Korea? It looked as if you did! Yes, I loved being part of the team. I am the ultimate winter sports fan so being able to watch a whole variety of sports and share my knowledge and passion was a dream. What were the highlights - and funny moments? Oh gosh, so many highlights

What do you think GB's success means for the future of winter sports developments in the UK? I hope we capitalise on the success we achieved and put more development into grass-roots skiing, channelling young talent through a clear pathway to the top. Now you have a young family, when do you think you’ll take your son skiing for the first time - and where? We already have! Locki 'skied' at 14 months in Tignes and then in Flaine with Dougie and I. When I say skied - he had boots and skis on and we kind of held him up. I know people might say we are pushy, but he had been asking us for weeks and every time we came back from training our team he was in his little ski boots. Just recently we took him to Chel-ski, the dry slope just off the Kings Road in London, for a lesson which is just perfect for beginners! He loved watching himself in the huge mirror and we could change the gradient and speed to suit him. Any advice for skiers with young ones in the mountains? Family ski trips are the very best family trips! Sharing new experiences in a healthy, fun environment is not to be missed.

QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS Favourite ski resort? No favourite resort really - it’s not where you go, it’s how the conditions are and who you are with. Number of resorts skied? Well I did 40 winters back-to-back (Southern and Northern Hemisphere between the ages of 10 and 30, travelling to a different resort every week at least). I’ve never really thought about making a list and adding them all up... Best mountain food? A hearty, perfectly cooked steak at La Peau de Vache - halfway down La Face in Val d’Isère. Heavenly and so justifiable. How do you relax off the slopes? Hot and cold! Hot tub then rolling in the snow! Must-pack item? Fat powder skis - just in case. If you weren’t a skier what would you be doing? Some kind of sport full-time - I love challenging myself physically. I’d probably try to be a surfer. Where’s left on your ski wish list? To ski Japan, Gulmarg in India and Portillo in Chile. And so much more... Three of my favourites too! I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to welcome you. Thank you Chemmy! Interview by Arnie Wilson

WENGEN

ADELBODEN-LENK

G S TA A D

Wengen is a magical, pedestrianised village that oozes charm and offers a remarkably warm welcome - it’s easy to see why families love it here. Accessed via a traditional mountain railway, this lovely village is situated in the spectacularly scenic Jungfrau region, with incredible views over the Eiger.

Situated in the mountainous heart of the Bernese Oberland, Adelboden is a village-sized cluster of gingerbreadhouse chalets surrounded by beautiful snow-capped peaks and pine trees. The ski area boasts 210km of pisted runs; imagine tackling the world-cup giant slalom run on the Kuonisbergli, before cosying up in front of the fire for the evening.

The picturesque village of Gstaad has retained its fairytale Alpine charm, despite its growing popularity as a world-class skiing destination. Skiers can explore 200km of slopes, reaching a snow-sure altitude of 3,000m up on the glacier. Off the mountain, there are fabulous shops, award-winning restaurants and a lively après scene.

Off the snow, try out one of the resort’s tobogganing runs, or for something a little different, have a go at curling on Wengen’s natural ice-rink.

For those wanting to take in the magnificent views at a slower pace, there are 40km of winter hiking trails.

If you’re there over Christmas, don’t miss the delightful markets, where you can unwind with a mug of Glühwein under the twinkling lights.

Here you can cruise down glorious corduroy or ski through the trees, while taking in striking views of the Nevada desert in one direction and the shimmering lake in the other. You’ll find great ski terrain for all standards here, and plenty of fun to be had in the town of South Lake Tahoe. A couple of days in San Francisco is the perfect add-on, with a huge amount to see and do in this melting pot of art, tech, food and multi-culture. Hire bicycles and pedal over Golden Gate Bridge. VENICE &CORTINA

BERGEN &MYRKDALEN Skiing in Scandinavia should be on every skier’s bucket list. Western Norway’s largest ski resort, Myrkdalen, is one of the most snow-sure resorts in Europe, with a season extending until the end of May. Off the snow, Scandinavian adventures include horse-drawn sleigh rides, trips to the majestic fjords and, if you time it right, you might even see the northern lights. A visit to Bergen is our suggested add-on. A UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by seven fjords, this enticing city is packed with history and culture. Pastel-coloured houses line the city’s rolling hills, while the lights of the river ferries reflect on the fjord’s shimmering waters. Take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen for the best views. On the mountain there is a vast 1,200km of varied downhill skiing to enjoy, while the town itself is impressively chic and lively. If you love fashion and gastronomy as much as a perfectly groomed piste, the boutique shops and Michelin-starred restaurants will tick every box. And as you're flying into Venice, the 'floating city' is the perfect stopover, just a two hour drive from Cortina. A labyrinth of marble palaces, waterways, quaint churches and canal-side eateries, it's easy to enjoy getting lost here, pottering along one beautiful little street after another. WONDERFUL

WHISTLER Consistently voted the no.1 ski resort in North America, Whistler is truly world-class. The two majestic mountains provide the perfect playground for epic skiing and snowboarding and the vibrant, pedestrianised village is buzzing with legendary après and five-star dining.

P

icture winding your way from Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway, taking in the soaring mountain peaks and ocean vistas, before spotting Whistler on the horizon. Some people refuse to ski anywhere else and here's why...

P O W D E R H E AV E N

The powder in Whistler is phenomenal by any skier’s estimation; even the most experienced powder hounds’ jaws will drop. Big storms brew out on the Pacific and Whistler is one of the first dumping grounds for all that beautiful snow. Last winter they had an amazing season, with 12.4m of snowfall compared to the recent average snowfall of 11.8m. TERRIFIC TERRAIN

This is North America’s largest ski area, stretching over 8,000 acres, so whether this is your first time on skis or you've lost count, you can’t get bored here. There are many areas in Whistler, including ungroomed bowls, chutes and tree runs, which the Europeans would dub off-piste. The Whistler team make sure they're avalanche-secured and call it in-bounds, making Whistler ideal for adventurous types with safety in mind. THE BACKCOUNTRY

The backcountry here should be on your bucket list, with legends such as Mount Pattison, Decker Mount and the Flute; think cliff drops, wind lips, chutes and glaciers. There are plenty of great programmes, such as Extremely Canadian, with expert guides to take you out to explore this incredible backcountry. O T H E R W O R L D LY E X P E R I E N C E S

The ultimate goal for every powder enthusiast is heli-skiing. There are plenty of opportunities in Whistler, opening up access to over 400,000 acres of virgin backcountry, including 173 glaciers. You'll swoop down to remote areas to be the first on the snow: no queuing and no lifts. It's a surreal experience like no other, with the feeling that it’s just you and the wilderness. The resorts in Lake Tahoe are in close proximity, giving adventurous skiers the opportunity to explore multiple resorts in one trip. Down in South Lake Tahoe, don’t miss Heavenly; the best resort in the area for tree skiing with the added benefit of Nevada’s infamous nightlife on the doorstep.

ramatic fjords, majestic mountains, charming villages, cosy cabins... and that's all before we even mention the astonishing northern lights. Not only is the skiing world-class here, the experiences off piste are just as impressive. And with snow from December to April, it's one of the most snowsure destinations in the world. We've selected four of our favourite Norwegian ski resorts to tell you a little more about.

MYRKDALEN Open since 2003, the modern resort of Myrkdalen is set amongst stunning fjords and frozen lakes.
