Welcome

Guest Editor Arnie Wilson introduces this year’s Preview for winter 17/18

G

reetings! I recently caught up with my old friend Sir Ranulph Fiennes, AKA “The World’s Greatest Living Explorer.” I’ve had the good fortune to know Ran for more than 30 years, but luckily he’s never persuaded me to travel to the frozen north or the frozen south with him. Sadly I’ve never had the chance to ski with him either, so I thought it would be fun to ask him how skiing has influenced his life - not just downhill, of course, but dragging huge sleds to both poles. We talk to him on page 10. Dare I mention Brexit? It just happens to be 31 years since the birth of Ski Solutions - and the year Spain and Portugal joined the EU. It was also the year the UK and France announced plans to construct the Channel Tunnel! On a skiing note, 1986 was the year Albertville was selected as the host of the 1992 Winter Olympics. It seems a far cry now from the coming Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. The 2018 organisers have since spent billions on new facilities and it’s sure to be a terrific spectacle! After all these years, Ski Solutions’ experts still know - in fact even more so today - what makes the perfect ski holiday. They can truly source the best option to suit your needs and I can personally vouch for that! This winter Ski Solutions are launching into Norway, a country whose ski areas are close to my heart. When I skied in Geilo not long ago, it seemed much bigger than I remembered from an earlier trip. The resort has extensive snowmaking facilities - but it certainly wasn’t required during our visit. For a ski area that’s little known outside Scandinavia, Trysil is also surprisingly big. In fact, it's the biggest in Norway. The resort offers the best part of 360 degrees of mountain for skiing and snowboarding, all linked, so you can follow the sun all day. Gladed slopes, with long, satisfying boulevard skiing girdle the lower mountain, while the upper half is treeless. It’s almost as if two rather different mountains have been fused into one. Trysil prides itself on the fact that blue and black runs

often run side by side, enabling people of all ages and abilities to keep close together. I must be honest and admit I haven’t skied in Beitostølen, but fellow skiers on the plane with us were already singing its praises before we parted company. Another exciting development from Ski Solutions this winter is in the Canadian resort of Panorama in British Columbia. Ski Solutions’ “Ultimate Winter Experience” takes in some truly exciting heli-skiing and snowmobiling as well as four great days of skiing in the resort which has the second biggest vertical drop (over 4,000ft) in BC. And let me tell you that having heli-skied all over British Columbia, Panorama’s R.K. Heli-skiing operation is in my view the best one-day introduction to heli-skiing in the Canadian Rockies. Meanwhile, back in the French Alps there are all kinds of exciting new developments, with great new hotels and chalets opening. Val d’Isère has launched a major £170m “Le Coin de Val” development featuring 900 new guest beds in two luxury hotels and two “tourist residences”. In addition to catered chalets and hand-picked ski hotels, Ski Solutions now offer self-catered apartments in some of Europe’s best resorts, allowing those who like flexibility and independence to still take advantage of Ski Solutions’ expertise. Many residences in the Ski Apartment Collection benefit from ski-in ski-out locations and on-site boulangeries that invigorating first lift of the day, croissant in hand, has never been easier or more satisfying. With no set meal times, and 24-hour reception, guests can come and go as they please, dine where they wish, and stay out as late as they like after après ski (as long as it’s softly softly after hours!) - or get cosy indoors and cook for themselves. Even Sir Ran likes to get cosy, although the World’s Greatest Living Explorer rarely has the chance to!

After 15 years with the FT, Arnie Wilson edited Ski+board magazine for 13 years. He has skied in 729 resorts, including 40 heliskiing locations, and all 38 US skiing states.

What'sNEW

The Epic Pass just got turbo-charged

A

£170m development in Val d’Isère

S

tarting this autumn, the next five years will see the creation of ‘Le Coin de Val’ in the centre of Val d’Isère, a massive development project promising 900 extra guest beds in two luxury hotels and tourist residences. The new jewel in the crown will also include chalets, shops, restaurants and childcare facilities. Whilst it has been described as a redevelopment of existing structures, it is also touted as being the most ambitious building project seen in the Alps in 20 years, reportedly ‘eclipsing’ the creation of Arc 1950 in Les Arcs. Covering 22,000m2, the development will emerge from the area bounded by the bus station, Dick's Tea Bar and part of Avenue Olympique towards La Daille. Constructed in stone, slate and wood, it will be designed to minimise energy consumption – rainwater and snowmelt will be recycled to feed the sanitation system, and geothermal energy will help to heat the buildings. In addition, the former oldest cable car station in France, Tête de Solaise, is about to be transformed into the country's highest hotel with spa, restaurant, huge sun terrace and amazing 360 degree views.

New flights direct to Denver

6

F

vailable from Ski Solutions, this winter’s Epic Pass now offers unlimited, unrestricted access to an incredible 15 top ski resorts. With the addition of Whistler Blackcomb and Stowe Mountain Resort this winter, the Epic Pass now truly offers coast-to-coast skiing in North America. If that wasn’t already enough, Epic Pass holders also enjoy limited access to 30 European ski resorts. In some resorts the number of available days is restricted, reliant on users staying in specific partner accommodation, or booking tickets in advance. Nevertheless, for skiers who are keen to ski the world over and happy to work around some European resort limitations, the Epic Pass can work out as fantastic value for money. Adult passes cost $859 (£674) and child passes (age 5-12) cost $449 (£352)*. *Prices in USD. Prices correct at time of printing.

or those keen to ski in Colorado this winter, getting there just got even easier. As of September, low-cost airline Norwegian Air will offer flights direct from London Gatwick to Denver on Tuesdays and Saturdays, increasing to three times a week from November. British Airways is currently the only other airline offering direct flights to Denver from London, so this comes as a welcome addition – and one that will significantly reduce the cost of flying to top ski destinations including Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Winter Park.

Ski Solutions launches new ski apartments

I

n addition to catered chalets and hand-picked ski hotels, we now offer self-catered apartments in some of Europe’s best resorts. The selfcatering option is a welcome addition to our current portfolio, allowing those who like flexibility and independence to still take full advantage of our expertise. Many residences in the Ski Apartment Collection (carefully handpicked by our in-house experts) benefit from ski-in ski-out locations and onsite boulangeries - so making that magical first lift, croissant in hand, has never been easier. With no set meal times and 24-hour reception, guests can happily come and go as they like, dine where they wish, stay out extra late after après ski or cosy up indoors and cook for themselves. All ski apartment holidays are tailor-made with flight times to suit, and private transfers. Find out more on page 32.

Four Seasons to open in Megève this winter

Six Senses to make Swiss debut

F

ive-star hotel chain Six Senses make their debut in Crans-Montana with their new cluster of 17 deluxe dwellings and one larger hotel spread over two buildings. With 47 suites, the new hotel-apartment is being built in a prime position, at the foot of the slopes. Natural and sustainable materials, chosen to blend into the surroundings, are being used throughout the two buildings. Both will allow guests access to all the luxury facilities they have come to expect with a Six Senses hotel such as cutting edge technologies, a 22,000ft2 spa, gourmet restaurants and luxurious bars. Similarly, the residences are being built in the purest of Alpine styles, with 13 already available for purchase. The separate, opulent dwellings will come in all sizes, from one bedroom snugs for couples, to four bedroom family lodgings. All residents will also have access to all of the Six Senses’ luxury facilities. Building work will end in 2020 and the hotel is sure to be a fantastic addition to the up and coming Crans-Montana ski resort.

F

our Seasons Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s leading luxury hospitality companies, has announced that its first European mountain destination hotel is opening in Megève France, for the 17/18 winter season. Facing Mont Blanc and located just 70km from Geneva Airport, Megève boasts more than 130 groomed Alpine runs and some impressive off-piste terrain. As the resort’s first hotel to offer direct access to the Mont d’Arbois slopes, the 55-room Four Seasons Hotel Megève will be nestled into the base of Mont d’Arbois’ mountainside, creating a luxurious haven for skiers directly on the slopes. Commenting on the project, J. Allen Smith, President and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, said “Retaining the history and character of Mont d’Arbois while introducing Four Seasons legendary personalised service, we will create something yet unseen in the French Alps.” Four Seasons is one of our most popular hotel chains, so we’re pleased to be able to offer this fabulous new hotel to our clients this winter – contact us to find out more.

Ski

IN OUR TRACKS Our ski experts spent well over 350 days on the slopes last season. Here, we sum up some of our favourite places to ski, eat and sleep in the mountains.

Whistler

ON THE SLOPES Aspen, Colorado

“S

pread over four main ski areas, the skiing is as big and challenging or as gentle and as cruisy as you want. The lift network is modern and fast and the lift lines are small or non-existent. The childcare centre is fabulous for those aged from 8 weeks to 14 years. It offers something special for all almost everyone that visits Aspen with us returns.”

Clare, Ski Solutions Expert Aspen Snowmass

Gressoney, Italy

“A

ny seasoned skier must try the heli-skiing in Gressoney. There are more than 30 landing sites in the area, including the Colle del Lys which, at an altitude of 4,300m, offers the highest heli-skiing in Europe. The route down from here includes a run through an ice canyon, as well as Monte Rosa’s largest glacier.”

Whistler, Canada

“M

y favourite place to ski last year was the Symphony Bowl in Whistler. I loved how there were so many little chutes woven through the trees, so you could easily pop off piste through the woods and know you’d end up at the lift at the bottom.”

WHERE TO STAY Val d'Isère, France

“T

he Chalet Bel Sol would have to be my top choice in Val d’Isère. The owner, who stays there a few times over the season, has decorated it beautifully to give it a real home from home feel. It sleeps six to eight people and is just a short distance from the main lift area. It’s the ideal family chalet.”

Richard, Ski Solutions Expert

Andermatt, Switzerland

“T

he Chedi’s wooden façade blends in well with the village but step through the doors and unadulterated luxury is presented in a laid back spacious environment. There are lots of small, cosy areas spread throughout the ground floor so you can always find somewhere relaxing to sit - no doubt next to a fireplace. It also has a wonderful heated outdoor pool and fabulous spa with great hydro bath. The rooms are huge, actually more like suites with their own fireplaces, mini kitchens and living areas.”

Sophie, Ski Solutions Expert

South Tyrol

EATING & APRÈS Corvara, Italy

“T

he Piz Boe Alpine Lounge is somewhere I visit every time I’m in Corvara. Not only are you wowed by the panoramic views of Alta Badia, the Dolomites and tips of the Alps beyond that, but they source all of their produce locally, with the rabbit tartare being a personal, delicious highlight.”

Hugo, Ski Solutions Expert

Gstaad, Switzerland

“T

he Alpina is a stand out hotel: super luxurious but very understated. There’s an underground entrance so that the garden is always tranquil, and it has an amazing outdoor heated pool. It’s decorated in a chalet style and has an impressive art collection dotted around the hotel.”

James, Ski Solutions Expert

St. Anton, Austria

“O

wned by Mario Matt, a two-time slalom world champion, Krazy Kanguruh has a reputation for hosting some of the best parties in the Alps. Located just outside of the main village of St. Anton, Krazy Kangaruh’s sun terrace is open until 8pm and offers some of the best views down the valley – perfect for watching the last of the sun’s rays relinquish their touch on the mountains.”

Andy, Ski Solutions Expert The Alpina Hotel, Gstaad

Courchevel, France

“P

erched at the top of the Ariondaz gondola, Le Bel Air is very popular, so it’s worth making a reservation. The three-tiered terrace offers spectacular views over the valley, and guests can be sure of a warm welcome from longstanding owner, Christophe Gormier. Expect hearty mountain dishes, with a focus on French classics such as Alpine saucisson, sirloin steaks and escargots.”

THE BIG INTERVIEW 10

To speak to our experts, please call 020 7471 7765

SIR RANULPH FIENNES T H E U LT I M AT E M O U N TA I N M A N

S

ir Ranulph Fiennes has been described as The World’s Greatest Living Explorer. He could also have been one of the great Bonds! According to an interview on Top Gear, “Ran” as he is known to his friends was considered for the role of Bond, making it to the final six contenders, but was rejected by Cubby Broccoli for having "hands too big and a face like a farmer". Roger Moore was eventually chosen. Imagine if he’d been playing himself (and after all he was in the SAS!). You can almost hear him now, in that deep masculine voice, saying: “The name’s Twisleton-WykehamFiennes. Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes.” Where was your first expedition? My first expedition of any size was up the White Nile in 1969 - from sea to source in a two-seater hovercraft. Then, the following year came an expedition to Norway's Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe. For the Transglobe Expedition between 1979 and 1982, I was joined by two fellow former members of 21 Special Air Service Regiment, Oliver Shepard and Charles R. Burton, journeying round the world on its polar axis using surface transport only. Nobody else has ever done so by any route before or since.

Summiting Everest was a really great feeling. I was at that moment the highest person on Earth. At 65, I was then also, apparently, one of the oldest people ever to scale the mountain and the first old-age pensioner to do so.

Have you completed any challenges in the Alps? Yes, I’ve skied the Haute Route from Saas-Fee to Chamonix, climbed the North Face of the Eiger, the Mont des Géants, near Mont Blanc, and many, many other standard routes. I’ve also been on countless downhill ski holidays over 50 years, mainly in Chamonix, Arosa and Zermatt. For many years I taught langlauf (cross-country) in the British Army in Bavaria.

©Liz Scarff / Fieldcraft Studios

What was it like to summit Everest? Summiting Everest in March 2009, on my third attempt, was a really great feeling. Sadly my Sherpa, Tundu - who climbed with the speed and skill of a mountain goat - died last year in an avalanche. Since I was six inches taller than Tundu when we climbed Everest, I was at that moment the highest person on Earth. At 65, I was then also, apparently, one of the oldest people ever to scale the mountain - and the first old-age pensioner to do so. I was a nineyear-old schoolboy with wide eyes when Lord Hunt led the incredible expedition which put Hillary and Tenzing on Everest for the first time in 1953.

What’s one of the most unexpected things to have happened on an expedition? In 1992, finding an outpost of Arabia’s lost “city of incense” - Iram, also known as Ubar or Wabar, in Oman - 26 years after the first of my eight expeditions to locate it. I wrote about it in my book Atlantis of the Sands. What else is on your winter challenge bucket list? I’m still hoping to climb the highest peaks on every continent, including Denali, in Alaska - the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310ft and Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest mountain outside Asia. At 22,838ft it's the highest point in both the Western Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. If you are planning your next ski holiday, who would you take and where would you visit? I’d take my wife Louise our daughter Elizabeth, who is now 11, and a local ski guide who knew the best routes - and we’d go to the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, so we’d ski in the UK’s summer time. I was brought up in South Africa for 12 years, just under Table Mountain and my three sisters were all taken skiing in the Drakenbergs, but I was considered to be too young. If you could put a chairlift anywhere in the world where would it be? How about the North Face of the Eiger? It would make it much easier to reach the summit!

THE WONDER OF

WHISTLER As the largest resort in North America and home to the world record breaking PEAK 2 PEAK gondola, Whistler is the perfect playground for those who love mountain adventures and incredible powder as well as five-star dining, spas and legendary après. Picture winding your way from Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway, taking in the soaring mountain peaks, ocean vistas and spotting Whistler on the horizon – some people refuse to ski anywhere else.

An epic adventure Whistler’s ski area stretches over 200 trails, 8,000 acres of terrain and a dramatic, vertical drop of 1,609 metres. If this isn’t quite enough, then indulging in Vail Resort’s Epic Pass allows you access to 45 resorts across the world including Whistler itself. This is true coast-to-coast, country-to-country skiing.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow Boasting an average snowfall of almost 12m a year, Whistler has a distinct snow advantage and benefits from a unique climate in British Columbia’s Coastal Mountain Range. PANORAMA, CANADA This new experience is Pure Canada. Imagine heli-skiing from your hotel’s back garden then waking up the next day and snowmobiling through thick forests, keeping watch for amazing wildlife and sweeping views. Then there’s skiing in some of Canada's oldest mountains, down wide, groomed slopes and powder bowls. We’re excited to introduce The Ultimate Winter Experience, a new trip that showcases the true nature of a Canadian holiday in the hidden gem resort of Panorama.

Days 1-4 Skiing This part of Canada puts you right where you belong, in the mountains. Picture powder bowls and ridges that flow into Alpine chutes and wide, relaxing cruises down to the village. Then envisage twisting, turning, dipping and swerving down steep runs with panoramic views one minute followed by densely forested trails the next. After the adventure, retire to your home away from home and seek sanctuary in intimate bars and Panorama’s famous hot pools. No shuttle bus needed, just arrive, settle in and forget about everything else.

Day 5 Snowmobiling With 130km2 of terrain to explore, every snowmobiling trip is unique and unforgettable. From discovering an abandoned, turn of the century silver mine to climbing up to 8,000ft. From lunch in a cosy log cabin to catching a glimpse of a moose or a lynx through the trees. Finish this perfect day with play time in the snow before heading back down to a delicious meal.

Day 6 Heli-skiing If you live for powder, then it’s about time that you try heli-skiing. Panorama boasts 1,500km2 of terrain, including ancient glaciers, breathtaking scenery and of course, the sort of powder that you can only dream of. After a gourmet breakfast, take off up the mountain in your helicopter with an experienced guide and your group of fellow snow addicts. Ski all morning, stop for a deluxe lunch in the mountains then continue to ski all afternoon. It's truly an adventure of a lifetime.

Prices start from £1,925 Flights, transfers, accommodation, four day lift pass, ski hire, heli-skiing and snowmobiling included

This is a sample itinerary to inspire you for your next trip to Panorama, however it is flexible and can be changed to suit you and your party’s needs. Please visit www.skisolutions.com/panorama

AUST Austria, for many, is a largely untapped ski area. This beautiful country has something for everyone, from tots and teens to veteran skiers. From the snow-sure pistes to the unrivalled après ski, hospitality and many off the slope activities, Austria is a skiing hotspot that should not be overlooked.

ON THE SLOPES Austria's Alps are skiable well into spring where deep powder can still be found off piste. The high altitude of the mountains brings about ideal snowy conditions, with the Hintertux glacier in Tirol offering a huge 365 days of skiing a year. Whether you're looking to mix it up in Arlberg, Austria's largest ski area or prefer smaller, more intimate settings such as hidden gems Alpbach or Kühtai, you're bound to find something that suits in one of the country’s 426 ski areas. Austrian ski schools also have incredible standards with some St. Anton institutions dating back to the 1920s. In fact, Austria was the first place to introduce ski instruction, teaching many of those who now take part in Kitzbühel’s famous Hanenkamm-race down the notorious Streif slope.

20

TRIA GEMÜTLICHKEIT AND APRÈS SKI

OFF THE SLOPES

Alternatively, put some magic into your winter adventure by taking a romantic sleigh ride, sampling local Schnapps or tasting hot doughnuts under twinkling lights at one of Austria's internationally renowned Christmas markets. There's something for everyone.

For those who prefer something a little more energetic postski, Austria has an enviable and unrivalled après ski culture. The party kicks off in the early afternoon, where you can expect delicious food, questionable dancing, Jägertee and lashings of fantastic local beer. The MooserWirt in St. Anton is a particularly infamous venue, where the parties begin at dawn and continue well past dusk.

Spectacular panoramic views can be experienced whilst snowshoeing, with particularly impressive routes found in Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg. Partake in some tobogganing in Wildkogel, which prides itself on being the world's longest floodlit toboggan run, perfect for a post-skiing activity. Adrenaline junkies can also get their fix scaling the dizzy heights of frozen waterfalls whilst ice climbing.

The Austrian concept of Gemütlichkeit is hard to explain (and hard to say). It embodies cosiness, comfort and homeliness in a word that cannot be translated. Rustic huts invite you to while away the hours nursing a hot Glühwein or Schnapps in front of a crackling log fire. The excellent service and hospitality that can be encountered all over the country is guaranteed to leave a warm glow even in the cold winter weather.

THE PERFECT WINTER IN

KITZBÜHEL

W

ith its blend of traditional charm and sophisticated flair, Kitzbühel is an awe-inspiring winter destination. This legendary city of sports has been making skiing history for 120 years, with its location in the heart of the Austrian Alps making it the perfect place for the world famous Hahnenkamm races.

For those who prefer pottering to racing, Kitzbühel is the first ski region without a glacier to open in Austria and offers over 190 days of skiing a year. With 81 different runs spreading across an incredible 215km of piste, the Kitzbühel experience is totally epic and completely unforgettable.

As early as 1893, explorer Franz Reisch paved the way for the ski scene with his descent of the Kizbüheler Horn. Since, Kitzbühel has transformed from once a quaint summer getaway in the mountains to a world class ski destination and was the first ski resort to be established in the whole of Austria. A true pioneer of winter sports, Kitzbühel’s slopes are meticulously maintained, especially for the yearly Hahnenkamm race where lycra-clad teams hit top speeds down the Streif, often recognised as one of the world’s most demanding downhill courses.

HOTEL CORONA

ENGELBERG, SWITZERLAND

C O R T I N A , I T A LY

Set above the town of Engelberg and offering impressive views of both the town and toward the Titlis Mountains, this characterful hotel features an art nouveau façade and a history dating back to 1903.

Located on the edge of Cortina, sometimes known as the “Queen of the Dolomites”, the Hotel Corona is just five minutes from the slopes and less than ten minutes from the town centre.

With one of the most consistent snow records in Europe, Engelberg itself is one of the Alps' best kept secrets. And at just a 90 minute drive from Zürich, the Terrace makes for the perfect ski weekend destination.

The Corona has been run by the Romoldi's since the early 1900s and celebrates its heritage by displaying a lot of the family's modern art collection throughout. Much of the art dates back to before the First World War, when the hotel sheltered artists passing through the mountains. Every room features plush beds and a private balcony with views of the awe-inspiring Dolomites.

Old school glamour has not been forgotten here, with an underground ski escalator that whisks guests straight down to the village. In the rooms, guests are reminded of the hotel’s heritage by the wide arches, pillars and chandeliers that are dotted throughout. Be sure to visit the stylish lounge bar and enjoy an evening cocktail as you take in the views of Engelberg.
