to steamboat

S

teamboat Springs has been a hub of rural northwestern Colorado since the Ute Indians came to soak in the healing waters of the area’s numerous mineral springs. When white settlers arrived, they established Steamboat as a market town and the train depot soon became the largest cattle shipping point in the nation. With the introduction of ski jumping by Carl Howelsen, Steamboat once again evolved. While skiing and ranching remain key industries, arts and culture have always distinguished Steamboat from other mountain towns.

Welcome

In 1875 the Crawford family brought paints, easels and musical instruments to wild and rural Colorado. Thirty-eight years later Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp was established, and today it is the longest continually running performing arts camp in the nation at 104 years young! Our roots continue to be deeply embedded in arts and culture with indoor and outdoor music festivals boasting starstudded entertainment during Strings Music Festival and the Free Concert Series. We are home to a multitude of art galleries, museums and creative opportunities that allow our expansive population of artists and authors to thrive. There is no doubt that Steamboat’s arts and culture are an integral part of our past, present and future.

As rural communities become increasingly diverse, with people representing a wealth of socio-economic differences, increased social pressure affects how we live, respond and interact with each other. The Arts Council’s work through Steamboat’s Creative District is rooted in creating a sense of belonging through dynamic artistic programs, cultural tourism, honoring our heritage and building on creativity. Steamboat’s passionate arts organizations strive every day to offer a home where ideas and creative outlets can be nurtured. “Baby Alpaca,” on the cover of this guide, Linda Israel puts the viewer within kissing distance of a doe-eyed character with a Mona Lisa smile. “I always paint these animals sort of how you want to get in your dog’s face and give them a kiss,” she says.

Israel was raised in New York and Aspen, and studied fine art at the University of Colorado Boulder before attending the New York School of Interior Design. She worked as an editor for House Beautiful magazine and later worked as an interior designer in New York, Seattle and Denver. Israel was often asked to paint murals for clients’ homes, and animals were her favorite subjects. “My mom had a llama farm at the base of Mount Rainier,” she says. “When I left, I missed the animals on the farm, so I started painting all of these animals that I missed being around.” When a friend invited her to bring paintings to an art show, Israel decided to display six – they all sold, and the

beaming feedback from the show’s attendees inspired her to pursue a career in art. Israel’s paintings can now be found in galleries and boutiques across Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Israel works with a kaleidoscope of color. “I try to use all of the color I can without losing the form,” she says. “I love mixing my paints. I don’t use any colors straight out of a tube.”

In all of Israel’s psychedelic fauna portraits, the subject’s eyes shine with personality. “I think that’s what sets my paintings apart: the soulfulness in the eyes,” she says. “I try to make paintings up-close and personal – that’s why I don’t do legs, bodies or backgrounds.” Israel’s says her goal is to bring happiness to people’s homes and lives. “I get love notes from people every week telling me that my pieces spoke to them, that they make them happy,” she says. Linda Israel’s art can be viewed at the Center for Visual Arts and at www. lindaisraelart.com.

Native Americans

Edward S. Curtis exhibit: T

he Library of Congress, Peabody Essex Museum and a handful of major universities have collections of work by the renowned turn-of-the-20th century photographer Edward S. Curtis. Remarkably, so does the Tread of Pioneers Museum.

Curtis’s passion was to preserve what he saw as the rapidly vanishing culture of Native Americans. With initial funding from financier J. Pierpont Morgan, he traveled across North America for more than 20 years, beginning in 1906. He visited 80 Native American tribes and produced 40,000 images, 10,000 audio recordings and a full-length motion 10 • Volume 11, Edition 1, 2017

picture, but he did not stop there. He kept extensive journals in which he recorded many aspects of tribal life, which were later published in his 20-volume magnum opus entitled “North American Indian.”

“Curtis changed the way an entire nation viewed the Native people. It’s quite amazing, and it is unparalleled in the nearly 180-year history of photography,” says collector and author Christopher Cardozo.

A man on a mission, Curtis persisted despite the consequences of his quest. He lost his career, his wife and ultimately, even his work. When his wife filed for

divorce in 1919, she was awarded Curtis’ images in the settlement. Rather than allowing her to have them, Curtis and his daughter destroyed all of his glass negatives. The rights for much of Curtis’ work passed to the Charles E. Lauriat Company in Boston, where any unsold material remained untouched in the basement for 37 years. It was found on an accidental foray into the old files in 1972, when its reemergence sparked a renaissance of Native American culture.

Ten years previous to that fortuitous discovery, Hayden residents Ferry and Eunice Carpenter donated their personal collection of Curtis’ photography to the

Tread of Pioneers Museum. Ferry, a Harvard Law School graduate, and his wife were pioneer ranchers in west Routt County in the early 20th century. The Carpenters inherited the Curtis works from Eunice’s nephew, Richard Pleasant. Pleasant, founder of the American Ballet Theatre, and his father, “Johnny,” had assembled the collection over the years. The Tread of Pioneers Museum hired Cardozo to preserve the museum’s 12 prints. A representative sample from the permanent collection is on display at any given time. The museum is located at 800 Oak St. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 970-879-2214

Following the Meeker Massacre, the Utes were forcibly relocated to Utah from Colorado in 1881. Prior to that, their summer hunting grounds were in Northwest Colorado. modern American culture, the wounds run deep.

Healing that rift and preserving the Ute Nation’s regional history has been a long-time goal of Candice Bannister, director of the Tread of Pioneers Museum. One step in the process was a Stoney Mills, men's fancy dancer visit last spring by the Nah-Na-Mah Culture Club from Uintah River High School in Fort Duchesne, Utah. The students visited local schools and Library Hall, which was packed for an early evening performance featuring

traditional powwow dances. Bannister is hopeful that the visit will be the first of many to Steamboat Springs.

The Ute exhibit is one of the most popular at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, Bannister says. One of its highlights is an interactive video that features Roland McCook, a historian who is authorized by the tribe to speak on its behalf. The Tread of Pioneers Museum is located at Eighth and Oak streets downtown. Open TuesdaySaturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 970-879-2214.

iggly Marley, Grace Potter and The Avett Brothers have all performed for Steamboat Springs’ Free Summer Concert Series, but the outdoor events started 25 years ago with a pair of modest concerts on the Routt County Courthouse lawn. In summer 1993, John Waldman promoted and Joe Kboudi raised funds for a pair of concerts by The Wind Machine and Robin Ford Band in downtown Steamboat. Crowds at the free events grew each summer, and eventually spilled onto Lincoln Avenue. “It became a safety issue,” Kboudi says. “The city came to us and said, ‘We gotta find a new home for this,’” Waldman says. “They said, ‘What about doing this at Howelsen Hill? It’s kind of a natural amphitheater.’” Eight years after those first concerts, the series moved to the Howelsen Hill stage that Steamboat has come to know and love. “The Steamboat crowd’s energy really transfers to bands, and it always results in a great show,” Kboudi says. The Free Concert Series manages to land first-rate artists by booking them when they are just on the cusp of stardom. “We look for acts where we say, ‘We gotta get them now, because they won’t be affordable next year,’” Waldman says. “A lot of artists who play here end up playing at Red Rocks,” Kboudi says. “John’s a master of that: finding bands right on the edge of hitting it big.” The series is open to everyone, including those who wouldn’t normally be able to attend a concert. “It’s important that people can bring their whole family,” Kboudi says. “And it’s free, so everyone can come. Not everyone can normally afford to go to shows.” The series pulled out all the stops for its 25th year. “We have a really cool lineup this year that touches on a lot of different bases,” says Ted Carey, vice chair of the concert series. “One we’re all excited about is the Record Company – this really hot up-and-coming band that was nominated for a Grammy last year.” Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers are also scheduled to play a highly anticipated show this summer, after having to cancel their Steamboat show last year. “The concert series, for everyone involved, is a labor of love. No question about it,” Kboudi says. 14 • Volume 11, Edition 1, 2017

oung artists in Northwest Colorado want their voices to be heard, so they have begun to SPEAK out.

In the first of what members of the Young Bloods Collective hope will be many community events, YBC presented SPEAK: three hour-long performances by local women who are calling for change. Some of the performers were poignant, others were outspoken, while many were humorous. For instance, Amber Delay read a letter written by her great-grandmother, Charlotte Best, to the Hayden Valley Press in 1972: “Vail, as it is now – solid construction; unhappy people, and absolutely no parking!” – a statement that rang true to the audience 45 years later. Three sold-out SPEAK shows in Hayden, Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs last spring served to reinforce YBC members’ notion that young artists in the Yampa Valley have an abundance of talent; what they need is a platform to showcase it. SPEAK, a fundraiser for Advocates Building Peaceful Communities and Planned Parenthood, is one of several opportunities that YBC provides for local visual and performing artists. The collective has a presence at the Steamboat Farmers Market and hangs shows at local galleries, including the Center for Visual Arts, Pine Moon Fine Art and Steamboat Smokehouse. A 501c nonprofit organization, YBC helps members to network with other artists, the community at-large and regional/statewide organizations.
