teamboat Springs sizzles with creative energy. Since being designated as an official Colorado Creative District in 2017, the Yampa Valley has built enthusiastically on its arts and culture foundation. So what does that mean for art aficionados?

1. While maintaining our Western heritage, local artwork ranges from post-modern to Asian, from intaglio to watercolor. 2. Music – free concerts, classical orchestras and ensemble, opera, choral groups, club bands, street performers, international stars and local recording artists. 3. Public art abounds, with the newest trend being murals. 4. The Steamboat Art Museum, Tread of Pioneers Museum, Art Depot and Chief Theater exemplify historic preservation. 5. Dance is at the root of Steamboat’s cultural history. Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp presents summer performances featuring renowned American artists and young stars. 6. “Creative industry” goes beyond the obvious to include brewers, distillers, chocolatiers and bakers. 7. Something artistic is always happening in the ‘Boat: First 2 • Volume 12, Edition 1, 2018

Friday Artwalks, Art in the Park, Strings Kitchen and Garden Tour, the inaugural Lost Art Revival, Tread of Pioneers Museum walking tours, writers’ conference, Piknik Theatre Festival, Yampa Valley Crane Festival, Plein Air Festival, Literary Sojourn and Holidays in the Rockies. 8. Workshops: painting, photography, dance, musical instruments, theater and opera. 9. Live theater takes on multiple forms in Steamboat, from the Chief Players’ Western melodrama and Piknik Theatre’s performances in the park to one-acts, stand-up comedy and book readings. 10. Tattoo: nothing says lasting memories more than ink. You gotta have art! Deborah Olsen, publisher

ow do you distill complex concepts like time and decay into a work of art? Just ask Jim Gmeiner, the cover artist for this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts and Culture Guide. “Time & Change” (24 x 36, photograph on canvas, multi-image collage) depicts a vertical aspen tree in negative white space, with duplicated aspen-leaf skeletons arranged in horizontal single-file in the background. Gmeiner’s inspiration came for this piece when he encountered an isolated aspen tree, thin and beaten down by the elements on Rabbit Ears Pass. “Its shape reveals a successful struggle every season. Imperfect, but unique and graceful. The wabi-sabi of an object,” Gmeiner says, referring to a Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence. Gmeiner positioned white foam boards behind the tree, creating a blank background and a landing-place for the tree’s shadow, then photographed it in sections. Back in his studio, he used image software to stitch the photos together, reassembling the aspen on a white background – a “three-dimensional subject with beauty and grace in isolation.” Gmeiner created high-resolution scans of aspen-leaf skeletons, which he then macrophotographed and layered on top of one another. “Delicate and intricate architecture,” he says. “Like humans, the structures that hold us together change with time.” Gmeiner lined the leaves horizontally, contrasting the vertical aspen, to represent the action and time necessary for physical change. “The negative space is meant to have the observer complete the composition,” he adds. The final piece was printed on canvas and mounted on aluminum to maintain a three-dimensional appearance. Gmeiner’s path to photography was unorthodox. He originally worked as an orthopedic surgeon and was introduced to visual art through his basic science presentations and surgical exposures. “This was my ‘Degree in Fine Arts,’” he says. “It allowed me the opportunity to appreciate the complexities, detail and depth of anatomy and natural structures.” Art, Gmeiner says, is more than just his hobby – it’s incredibly personal. “What I create must first appeal to me,” he explains. “It may not be tasteful to all, so I am to a certain degree a collector of fine art. It just so happens much of it is my own art.” “Time and Change” is on display at Gallery 89 through July. Jim Gmeiner’s other work can be viewed and purchased on his website: www.JimGmeiner.com. 4 • Volume 12, Edition 1, 2018

f you’re wondering what a Steamboat Springs renaissance would look like, wonder no more. Local visual artists, writers, musicians, poets, historians, naturalists, craftspeople and performers come together to entertain and teach at the week-long Lost Art Revival this fall, celebrating the traditional art forms of Steamboat’s Western heritage.

Raiders of the Lost Art I

“Participants and visitors experience life and art the way it was when Steamboat Springs was occupied by the pioneers during the early years of development,” says Kim Keith, executive director of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. Keith says Routt County’s vibrant Western art heritage was the key to Steamboat’s success in earning a designation as a Colorado Certified Creative District in 2017, and this new event strives to celebrate that heritage. “Lost Art Revival is the epitome of what made Steamboat stand out amongst many other creative communities within the state,” Keith says. The Steamboat Creative District, newly named “Steamboat Creates,” worked with the Tread of Pioneers Museum to make sure the revival does justice to this area’s history. “Steamboat has a long history of cultivating the arts,” says Candice Bannister, executive director of Tread of Pioneers Museum. “A lot of towns host modern vibrant arts scenes, but Steamboat has had creativity in the lifeblood of the town since its beginnings, and creativity flourishes and continues to this day.” Bannister helped put together a list of Yampa Valley’s traditional arts to be included in festival workshops, including blacksmithing, beading, woodworking and soap making. One of the revival’s contemporary art highlights will be Western photographer Rick Meoli’s workshops at the Home Ranch.

“Rick's personal style and ability to capture the essence of Western lifestyle is stunning,” Keith says. “He is a contemporary photography master in a world where everyone has a camera in their pocket.” Another highlight of the Lost Art Revival is the Trail Mix, which combines hiking, exploration, learning and creativity. During a hike to Mad Creek Barn, artist Camille DiTrani teaches participants how to create art using items found in nature. A local historian attends the hike as well to provide historical context to the location. Lost Art Revival is slated for MondaySunday, Sept. 17-23. The Yampa i By Alesha Damerville

“Jill is one of our creatives here in the valley with great style, skill and professionalism, and she came highly recommended by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council,” says Kent Vertrees, president of Friends of the Yampa, which is cosponsoring the project with the city, fire district and Routt County Search and Rescue. “Kent asked me to create an image of the Yampa River,” Bergman says. “They wanted the whole river, from the Flat Tops to Dinosaur National Monument at the confluence of the Green River.” Bergman started with a thumbnail, which she then turned into a 70-inch-long

he streets of Steamboat Springs are on the path to becoming a bit more colorful. Jill Bergman, 16-year resident of the valley, is painting a mural on the exterior of the Ambulance Barn along the Yampa River. Her working title for the project is “The Yampa is Wild.”

a is Wild scale drawing. “I got everything in there, but it was a little too big to see the whole thing well, so I shrunk it down to 35 inches.” Bergman finished the smaller drawing in January. “I thought, ‘That’s a size I can carve’ – that’s how I normally work. I carved, printed and painted, and now we have our design.” It took Bergman more than a month to carve the image, which she is now converting back to a painting. The painting will then be projected onto the side of the Ambulance Barn, becoming Bergman’s guideline for the mural. The mural will cover two sides of the building and will take a couple of months to complete. “I will be using paper, which we hang from the wall,” Bergman says. “Then I will project and draw the image, so I don’t have to freehand it. I will paint the outlines, and then we will have some community painting days.” “Once it’s finished, we have a lift and we will apply adhesive gel to the building and on the back of the art, almost like giant wallpaper. This method has been used by artists for at least 20 years and holds up better than painting on the actual building,” Bergman says. Creation of the mural is set to begin this summer, and Bergman encourages participation from all ages during community painting days. For more information, visit www.jillbergman.com. R

ancher Elaine Gay was famous for her pies and homemade goodies. People often stopped by her Pleasant Valley ranch just to say hi – and hope for a treat, a wish that seldom went unfulfilled. Memories of days spent with Elaine in the lush green South Routt valley live on through the work of artists like Chula Beauregard. Her 8 x 10 piece, “Elaine’s Place,” evokes nostalgia. “Elaine filled our bellies with cookies and biscuits,” Beauregard recalls.

Beauregard is among seven painters whose work is hanging through Sunday, Dec. 2, as part of an exhibit at Tread of Pioneers Museum titled, “An Artist’s View: Cultural and Heritage Landscapes of Northwest Colorado.” 20 • Volume 12, Edition 1, 2018

"Casey's Pond," 2010, oil on canvas, 20 x 16, Glenna Olmsted

The exhibit chronicles rural Routt County’s heritage and beauty through the eyes of accomplished artists Jim Steinberg, Mary Pat Ettinger, Glenna Olmsted, Cindy Wither, Greg Effinger, Barbara Sanders and Beauregard. Iconic scenes from the Yampa Valley are featured: Steinberg’s photograph, “A Moment of Flight,” depicts dancers at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp. Olmsted’s work, “Casey’s Pond,” portrays the old white barn that once stood where Casey’s Pond assisted living center is now located. Effinger’s oil, “Country Home Decoration,” is a classic representation of an old wagon wheel. Sanders’ “Strawberry Past” is a copperplate etching of a shelter for strawberry pickers, now long gone from Strawberry Park. But the exhibit also comprises less well-known, more out-of-the-way locales. Their inclusion adds significantly to the value of the exhibit as a means of preserving Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide • 21
