about the cover Artist

Ryan Keating "C

ock," Ryan Keating’s painting featured on the cover of this Yampa Valley Arts and Gallery Guide, doesn’t just capture the viewer’s attention – it holds it hostage.

Welcome J

eff Roth is meticulously adding soft gray shading to the big white wings on Lincoln Avenue. He is painting in the hot sun as his son watches and plays with Legos on the lawn. The wall is cracked and green. The sprinkler goes off. He returns after the water drops stop. People pose frequently to snatch selfies, posing like angels.

Jeff is the “Wings” muralist – an arts educator, biracial, born in the South, raising his family of four in Steamboat Springs. He connects to the world through his paintings, his installations, his murals. Jeff is an artist member of the Arts Council, and exhibits in the Council’s group shows. Three times he was hired to be a visiting artist at local schools. Once, he helped a group of Vista Volunteers lead a large group of teens on an MLK Day project. His life and his art collide and we get to enjoy that endeavor. He gravitates to painting to express his individuality and his view of the world. Like Jeff – and regardless of your political affiliation, your religion, your race or your art form – you can belong to this arts community. The sheer number of cultural nonprofits in this community is staggering. These groups do the work that fills in the gaps between what we need as a society and what we have: art-ivism for social justice, art classes to develop a nonviolent form of communication, community performances celebrating cultural differences and stories that transport you to a different time and place.

The Arts Council’s mission is to provide those opportunities and to support others who are aligned with this mission to bridge the gap – to be a place of solace, inspiration and self-expression. All of these things can make our lives more enjoyable, our communities richer, our coping with uncertainty more integrated and healthy. Creativity can teach us to work together, to learn from each other and transcend the world in which we reside to a powerful way of living. In Steamboat Springs, there are opportunities every day to open the door to creativity. Kim Keith Executive Director, Steamboat Springs Arts Council 2 • Volume 10, Edition 2, 2017

“There is something dynamic and regal about roosters compositionally that commands your attention,” Keating says. The bright paint splatters that accent the image add to its vitality and lend it an abstract quality. “I wanted to loosen up and let go, and let the paint be fluid and gestural,” Keating says. “I wanted to lay paint out on the canvas in a messy almost subconscious way and create something recognizable out of the chaos.”

The chicken as a subject for "Cock" sprang from Keating’s childhood raising chickens with his family. “We would always draw and paint as kids and create art out of what we could find, carving bars of soap and coloring on cardboard,” Keating says. He spent his early childhood in Steamboat Springs and made it his goal to return to Steamboat after studying fine art and art history at the University of Connecticut. He has worked as a photographer, painter and sculptor in Steamboat for the past ten years.

"Cock" was a slight departure from Keating’s most recent series: "Birds of the Yampa Valley." Each piece in the series features a Yampa Valley bird painted on a veneer wood panel; Keating paints along the grain of the wood to create a sense of depth and to “bring attention to the character and uniqueness of the wood.” "Birds of the Yampa Valley" was inspired,

Cock, Ryan Keating, acrylic, oil and marker, 24 x 36

Keating says, by his love of the outdoors and the natural beauty that surrounds Steamboat Springs.

“Each piece is a study of the animals, their habitats, and the essence of the time and place,” Keating says. “Birds seem to represent an intimate and playful view of nature.” Keating is currently working on three more paintings to accompany "Cock" in a chicken-themed series, and several additional birch-veneer pieces for the "Birds of the Yampa Valley" series.

“My artistic style is perpetually changing as I am learning, seeing and experiencing new things,” Keating says.

"Cock" has been purchased and is currently in a private collection, but a limited number of prints are available for purchase at the Center for Visual Arts. Yampa Valley Arts & Gallery Guide • 3

cover contest runner-ups

MISSY BORDEN

In Missy Borden’s abstract piece, "Getting To and From," the artist used graphite and an acrylic wash to recreate a landscape photograph she took over the summer. “I kept it really simple, and ended as soon as I felt like it was interesting and not overworked,” Borden says. “I enjoy realism a lot, but have found that I feel more free and expressive when I loosen my style and let go of what I think my painting should look like in my head.”

Born and raised in Steamboat Springs, Getting To and From, 2016, acrylic and graphite, 9x9 Borden studied art under local artists like Rich Galusha, Chula Beauregard, M.B. Warner and Keri Searls. As a mother of three young children, she focused much of her energy on her family in recent years, but she has recently managed to recommit herself to her art. “I let my emotions fuel my work, and so sometimes I never really know where a piece is headed until I am knee-deep in it,” Borden says.

Borden is currently working on a series of abstract and landscape paintings. “The series was brought on by a personal period of melancholy, and is a little different from my recent work,” she says.

LINDA ISRAEL

The painting "Moose Magic" by Linda Israel was inspired by a moose that wandered into her neighborhood in Grand Lake.

Israel’s background is in design, but her art career took off when she moved to the mountains and began painting animals full time.

“I paint every day from a soulful place in myself Moose Magic, 2015, acrylic on canvas, 40 x 30 to share my love of animals and color with others,” Israel says. “Mostly I am asked to paint bears as they seem to capture a playfulness and soulfulness that my work is collected because of.“ Israel currently has her art featured at Center for Visual Arts, as well as galleries in Aspen, Boulder, Evergreen and Grand Lake. The original "Moose Magic" painting has been sold, but is still available in limited giclée prints at www.LindaIsraelArt.com.

TERRI ROBERTSON

"Getting To and From" can be purchased at the Center for Visual Arts.

PAULA JO JACONETTA

Paula Jo Jaconetta photographed the still-life "Heart Left" to capture her love of succulents. She shot the plant using different angles and props, then used photo-editing software to create the ethereal, layered effect of the final picture.

Heart Left, 2016, textured photography, 18 x 24

10 • Volume 10, Edition 2, 2017

After experiencing a personal loss, Jaconetta decided to move from Wisconsin to Steamboat Springs for one winter. “That was 19 years ago,” she says. The photographer now works out of a studio in Oak Creek, and plans to “push back the roots of photography” using an old-fashioned collodion method. "Heart Left" is available at the Center for Visual Arts.

Framed by Aspen, 2016, oil, 16 x 16

"Framed by Aspen" depicts a Northwest Colorado scene that Terri Robertson remembers from 44 years ago. A winter drive on Baker’s Peak, the artist says, revealed deer watching from the aspen forest. “Except for their shapes, they were camouflaged by the winter landscape,” Robertson says.

Robertson began painting as a high school student in Southern California. “I don’t think anyone chooses to be an artist,” she says. “I think everyone is an artist!” Robertson moved to the Yampa Valley, where her husband’s family homesteaded, 40 years ago. “For me, I have a passion for painting things that I know will never be the same as they are in that moment,” she says. Currently, Robertson is working on a series of from-memory paintings of Northwest Colorado landscapes and wildlife in the vein of "Framed by Aspen."

"Framed by Aspen" can be purchased online at www.Etsy.com/shop/TerriRobertsonArt

A Sip of History

History Happy Hours offer attendees an opportunity to grab a free craft beer and learn about Routt County history’s “scandals, crimes, conflicts, murders, outlaws and wild times.” Candice Bannister, the executive director at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, brewed up the idea. “To pique curiosity and interest, I chose the theme of the event to be the rowdy and raucous side of Routt County history that you may not find on the walls of the museum,” Bannister says.

Family” for March. An April Happy Hour is planned as well. “Crimes and Conflict,” was poised to be a standout in the series. “Paul Bonnifield is such a tremendous historian,” Bannister says. “There is no end to his knowledge so his take on 'Crimes and Conflicts in Routt County' should be fantastic.” As a bonus, Happy Hour attendees get to take a behind-the-scenes look at the Butcherknife brewing process – each talk is held in the production area in the back of the brewery. “Beer and history are a great match!” Bannister says. Let’s drink to that.

The first three months of Happy Hours have had strong audience attendance, Bannister says. Over 150 people packed the brewery for Laurel Watson’s talk regarding “Brooklyn: Steamboat’s Red Light District,” while “Cattle and Sheep Range Wars of Routt County” and “The Outlaws and Lawmen of Routt County” proved to be popular as well. Upcoming Happy Hours, held the first Tuesday of each month, will feature “Crimes and Conflicts in Routt County History” for January, “The Death of Joseph Hahn and the History of Hahns Peak” for February and “Outlaws: Tom Horn and the Bassett
