››Deep in the heart of Steamboat Springs lies a vibrant arts community where locals and visitors gather to create a symphony of creative activities and cultural events.

The colorful cast of independent artists, cultural nonprofits and creative businesses contribute to Steamboat Springs’ ranking as the second most vibrant small town in the nation (2021, SMU DataArts – Arts Vibrancy Index).

Steamboat has been a home to the arts since the first settlers arrived in the late 1800s, and before that, the Ute Nation and even the Fremont Peoples called the Yampa Valley home. The natural environment that inspired our ancestors continues to inspire creatives today – which is probably why so many artists choose to live and work here.

We believe in the power of creativity to inspire human connections, create social change and support economic vibrancy throughout Colorado, especially in rural areas like Routt County.

The city of Steamboat Springs has evolved significantly over the years, leaning on ranching, tourism, outdoor activities and, now, creative businesses to sustain itself. The collective cultivation of creative sector collaborations extends the capacity for working artisans to secure jobs, develop professionally and live in a place that they love.

There are countless ways to get involved and inspired, including workshops for beginners and advanced artists, youth art programs and local theater. Visit the recently renovated Steamboat Art Museum, the historic Tread of Pioneers Museum or our world-class Bud Werner Memorial Library. The Free Concert Series, Strings Music Festival and Snow Bowl’s Summer Series offer a wide array of music to move you. As you wander down the core trail that lies adjacent to the mighty Yampa River, you will find original sculptures, murals, interpretive signs and public art that tell the story of this land and our shared values.

“Summer Sojourn”

›› “Plein air studies are like seedlings to me,” Chula Beauregard muses. “Sown in the wild, out in person, and then they can take on any life that they need.” One such study is featured on the cover of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. "Summer Sojourn" stems from a piece she painted in June 2022. From “the raw material,” as Chula calls it, she went on to create a commissioned painting of the iconic Fish Creek Falls.

A favorite subject of artists locally and beyond, Fish Creek Falls’ offerings are many.

“To me, what’s really intriguing about Fish Creek Falls is that it’s different every time of day and every day of the year,” Chula says. “In the fall, the water is trickling down like a necklace and in the summer, it’s rushing at you like a train. You just know that no matter what’s going on, it’s going to be interesting.”

In “Summer Sojourn,” Chula points out the subtlety of the color in the water, the shadows of purples and blues, the force of the water and the yellow ochre. “All of that was unique to that day,” she says.

Chula has been painting outside since she was a little girl, and her appreciation for plein air painting has been honed over the years. Working quickly as the light changes, she has learned to work with whatever conditions she has at any given time. “There’s always light,” she says. “It’s just a matter of knowing how to work with what you’re looking at and make the best of it.”

Last summer, Chula won the President’s Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, which was held at the Steamboat Art Museum, for her painting titled “Lift.”

Her work can be found locally at the R-Diamond Gallery as well as the Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs and the SimpsonGallagher Gallery in Cody, Wyoming.

An Unexpected Medium

›› Israel Holloway stocks up on Robert Mondavi merlot, but not for drinking – for painting. The Craig-based artist did his first wine painting in 2012 for an art auction. The fundraiser involved a winetasting event, so he thought he would stick with the theme and try painting with red wine.

While watercolors are his preferred medium (he painted the world’s largest watercolor in 2020), he found that wine-painting was intriguing. It’s similar to painting with ink, he says, in that it’s difficult to move around and it stains right away, unlike watercolors. His images, typically depicting Western scenes of people and horses, don’t lack for detail. The muscular backs of horses, folds of clothing, clouds in the sky and shadows across the ground all come through in his wine-laden brush strokes.

“Most of my figurative work explores honesty, resilience, patience, humility and certainly beauty because those are attributes I would like to see in myself and humanity as a whole,” Israel says. “I prefer themes that express our current world and share the Western spirit.”

Local artist Israel Holloway began experimenting with red wine painting over a decade ago.

When he’s finished with a piece, Israel lets the painting sit for a bit before spraying it with archival acrylic spray, which slows down the aging process. In a playful gesture, he often stamps it with the bottom of a wine glass, leaving a circular mark on the lower edge of the paper.

“I think viewers make a connection with the wine because they have handled it and spilled it,” he says. “It makes a good conversation when you have a glass of wine in your hand.” ■

A Welcoming Installation

›› What makes you feel welcome in the outdoors? This is the question that Sage Sullivan pondered as she submitted a proposal to create an art installation at the base of Steamboat Resort.

A community committee asked for submissions for murals, sculptures and interactive tech-based ideas from over 20 artists across North America last fall. The judges unknowingly landed on a local artist in selecting Sage, whose childhood in Steamboat Springs was infused in her art – even if the selection was made in a “blind review,” in which judges did not know the names of artists during their considerations.

walks of life. The sculpture, which is slated to be installed in November, is a bouquet of abstract wildflowers growing from aspen tree stems in a tipi shape. It was created from welded steel, epoxy resin and fiberglass.

While the installation celebrates the Yampa Valley in its truest form, much of the inspiration came from Sage's time away from Steamboat, when she worked in art at the Nomadics Tipi Shop in Bend, Oregon – coincidentally the makers of Steamboat Resort’s iconic tipi on Why Not.

“I’ve always been interested in Native art, but appreciation over appropriation,” she says. “That’s what Nomadics is all about. Then I find out these are the tipis I grew up eating cookies in during Trail Busters (a kids’ ski program for Steamboat locals). It felt really cyclical.”

The tipi style of Sage’s bouquet pays homage to the Indigenous people’s use of aspens for the construction of tipis and medicinal purposes to acknowledge that the land Steamboat Resort is located on belongs to the generations that came before. The aspens in the piece, with their tangled web of roots, represent the connection and community that is fostered in the valley.

The aspen “eyes” are made from old horseshoes donated by ranches across Routt County. The wildflowers, representing resilience and individuality, celebrate marginalized groups, Black, Indigenous, People of Color and the LGBTQ+ community. Their colors are the blues, purples, pinks and oranges of Steamboat’s iconic alpenglow.

“The more I show it to people, the more I hear, ‘Oh, it looks like this!’ or ‘It reminds me of this.’ Each time it’s something different and not something I’ve thought of,” Sage explains. “That’s exactly what I wanted people to do. I want them to find themselves in it.” ■

Inspired by Gold

If Claude Monet were painting today, he might well have been drawn to the Yampa Valley’s warm light. Especially in autumn, when the aspens add their own brilliant hue to the daylight, the colors are extraordinary.

That may, in part, explain the popularity of Steamboat Art Museum’s annual Plein Air event, Friday, Sept. 22-Friday, Sept. 29, with the resulting works on display at the art museum from Friday, Sept. 29, through Saturday, Nov. 4.

Fifty artists from throughout the country spend a week painting outdoors – en plein air –in the Yampa Valley. Event organizers point out a few favorite haunts, with new locales added each year. Some artists choose to follow the suggestions while others explore the area on their own, finding their own personal, inspirational spot.

“I go every year,” says Denver artist David Harms. “For me personally, there’s a couple different reasons. First and foremost is the staff at Steamboat Art Museum. I just love the event because of the people. I also love to be up there, especially in the fall. It just doesn’t get better than that.”

Artists are everywhere during the plein air workshop: pulled over alongside the road near a patch of golden aspen trees, down by the river where fall’s low waters make river rocks gleam, at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp in Strawberry Park, or in the studio reserved for the occasion.

Alpine Mountain Ranch & Club hosts the annual Sunset Reception on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Tickets are a hot commodity for this evening of cocktails and art, alongside the pond at this exclusive property.

Plein air artists set up at scenic locations throughout the Yampa Valley to capture the fall colors.

Artists start the week on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Farmers Market in Old Town for the Quick Draw event. Easels are erected among the vendors and at the end of the allotted time, artists’ works are put up for sale at the market. The pieces go fast, with buyers hovering nearby, waiting for sales to open.

All pieces in the Steamboat Art Museum plein air exhibit are for sale. Museum hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Community Theater Finds a New Home

›› Introducing the newest version of community theater: The Players at Perry-Mansfield. Formerly known as the Chief Players (and then the Yampa Valley Players), the newest iteration is here to stay, and the players have found a home at Perry-Mansfield.

“It’s very exciting for us because we now have the support of professional staff at PerryMansfield that can help us with scripts and productions and everything like that,” says Brad Kindred, who is one of the eight core members of the performing arts group.

It’s a group that dates back several decades, providing entertainment and laughs to the community. When the Chief Theater, the group’s former venue, fell under new ownership and closed for potential renovation, they searched for a new spot to perform. Post-Covid, Brad thought the group was dead. “It was my goal to reinstate community theater,” he says.

Now that goal is coming to life as the players move into the Julie Harris Theatre. This summer they are scheduled to present “Death by Chocolate,” by Paul Freed, a satirical comedy and murder mystery, Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 24-26.

And the players are upping their game. With Perry-Mansfield’s facilities at their disposal, the audience will get to see version 2.0 of community theater. “It’s great for performing arts but also for the community as whole,” Brad says. “We have some very talented people in town and this gives them another outlet to show their creative side.”

Their future goal is to perform four times a year, in the Hayden Town Center as well as the Julie Harris Theatre.
