❯❯ The transformative power of creativity is a critical component to the evolution of the world as we know it. Creativity contains the spark that initiates change. When you participate in creation or simply observe others’ creations or creative processes, you are changed. Creativity’s involvement in our lives is limitless. Steamboat Springs is a place that feeds and nurtures the creative spirit, and does so in an environment that is filled with natural beauty, inspirational people, opportunities for collaboration and a vast array of arts and culture activities that will connect you to something we value very much: community. We are experiencing a resurgence in the importance of having a vibrant arts and culture scene, and we couldn’t be more excited to offer a warm welcome to our community of creators, performers, photographers, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, writers and visual artists through the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. An abundance of opportunities awaits you. As we embark together on the “Frontier of Imagination,” we hope that you will experience the beauty and authenticity of Steamboat Springs, especially through a creative lens. There are art galleries that range from contemporary to Western, and music that ranges from bluegrass to symphonic. Each offers memorable experiences you can share. A brief look at the events calendar will provide you with a taste of talents of local performances, dancers, actors and musicians. Steamboat is filled with opportunities for you to explore, attend or – even more exciting – participate in creativity. Welcome to our colorful world in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, where it is easy to get involved in creative activities or simply be inspired by our unique sense of community and place. d a vid la mb e th , "Ro de o Ac r o ba t" David Lambeth | Courtesy David Lambeth

❯❯ With a nod to Pablo Picasso and the colorful art of Mexico, David Lambeth’s “Rodeo Acrobat” (oil on canvas, 52 x 38, 2019) is also a tribute to Northwest Colorado’s Western heritage. “I wanted to do something that reflected the culture around here, and I thought of the rodeo,” the artist explains. Lambeth and his wife, Melissa Hampton, moved to Steamboat Springs full-time last year, having first come to Northwest Colorado in search of snow. Avid skiers, they visited numerous resorts in the Rockies before they settled in the Yampa Valley. “Steamboat Springs is a real town with a great arts community and a great music community,” says Lambeth, who plays guitar and sings. The whole left-brain/right-brain theory is a little oversimplified for Lambeth, who retired in 2018 from the Emory University School of Medicine. There, he and his team made scientific history when they discovered the existence of a new family of enzymes, dubbed Nox enzymes, and their relationship to cancer and heart disease. Lambeth says that creative thinking, generally associated with art rather than science, factored into his career as a scientist. “It allowed me to go into areas I didn’t know anything about,” he explains. “The whole thinking process – left versus right – I think 6 • Volume 13, Edition 2, 2020

there’s a whole lot of overlap.” Even as he achieved milestones in his scientific career, Lambeth pursued an interest in art. He began painting when he was a teenager. “Monet was my first inspiration,” he says. “I started working both backwards and forward from him.” At present, he employs two distinctive styles: one is realistic, the other more abstract and colorful. His favorite subjects are wildlife and horses, which he started painting after his wife expressed an interest in owning one. He jokes that he was hoping she would accept paintings of horses in lieu of owning them. (It worked, by the way.) He sees two obvious influences in “Rodeo Acrobat.” “Picasso is an influence,” he says, “but my work is a little closer to realism than his was.” During Steamboat’s shoulder seasons, Lambeth and Hampton live in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. “The artists there are not afraid of color. I’m sure that influenced me as well,” Lambeth says. “I was trying to get a sense of motion and balance. I’m really keen on composition. I made a number of preliminary drawings to work out an artful composition.” Lambeth’s work can be seen locally at Windfall Fine Art Gallery, 1015 Lincoln Ave., or by visiting www.davelambethfineart.com.

Colorado Creative Industries Summit

Comes to Steamboat Springs | By ALESHA DAMERVILLE ❯❯ “Some of the best learning is from each other’s experiences,” says Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates. In 2017, Keith submitted a proposal to Colorado Creative Industries to host the Creative Industries Summit. Steamboat wasn’t selected that year. “I submitted again,” Keith says. “We don’t have enough representation in Northwest Colorado. We’re always going to the Front Range or other places for education and we really want to showcase what we have here.” After working with CCI, Keith’s second proposal was approved. The event consists of two days of breakout sessions, showcase performances and keynote speakers. Pop-up performances and tours are planned all over town. “I’ve never been to another conference like it – there are so many interactive things that are happening,” she says. “We will be recreating the spirit of a First Friday ArtWalk, but amplified with poets, musicians, performers and dancers on the streets and in various locations.” Artists, creatives, city leaders, arts administrators, heritage and preservation professionals and entrepreneurs alike can look forward to hearing Bobby LeFebre speak. He was just named Colorado’s Eighth Poet Laureate and will be one of the keynote speakers at the summit. LeFebre is the youngest poet and the first person of color to have earned this title in Colorado. This social-worker-turned-spoken-word artist is using his message to empower communities. “He is down in the trenches, but he’s also standing in front of hundreds of people doing spoken word slam poetry,” Keith says. “He’s an activist and very contemporary, so he talks about sensitive subjects.” In addition to his address, LeFebre will likely do a session on the poetry of place. “He’s great whenever he’s in a location to grasp the essence of the place, so people who go to his session will be able to see how he crafts his poems and figure out how to craft their own,” Keith says. The intention of CCI is to diversify and strengthen economies, particularly in rural places. It started with urban redevelopment, but the focus has shifted to rural prosperity. “It’s meant to be a showcase of local talent, an opportunity for career development through education and to highlight cool things that are happening in other places through the conference so we can move things forward within our public art realm,” Keith says. The Colorado Creative Industries Summit takes place Thursday-Friday, May 14-15. For more information, visit ColoradoCreativeIndustries.org. 14 • Volume 13, Edition 2, 2020

The Dance Melting Pot

Abagail Fritz | Courtesy Abagail Fritz

| By ALESHA DAMERVILLE ❯❯ The Yampa Valley’s rich history of dance dates back to the Utes, who today travel to Steamboat Springs annually to present a Ute Pow Wow dance performance – a colorful, energetic and educational event dedicated to Steamboat Springs’ native inhabitants and hosted by the Tread of Pioneers Museum. As the valley continues to evolve, the love for dance has grown with it. No matter the skill level, if you want to dance, you have options. Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School is nationally recognized for dance education and the opportunity to study under the finest dance professionals in the industry. Perry-Mansfield builds strong performers who reach incredible levels of achievement, producing notable alumni including Charles Weidman, Hanya Holm and Dustin Hoffman. Varying dance styles abound in Steamboat. Belly dancing, partner lessons, barre, tap, lyrical, contemporary, modern, jazz, ballet, cardio dance, Afro Fusion and aerial classes are all great options for those looking to cut a rug. “I was specifically drawn to percussion instruments and rhythmic dancing,” says Abagail Fritz, Afro Fusion dance choreographer and 16 • Volume 13, Edition 2, 2020

“I combine my understanding of these various styles into a fusion style that I use to facilitate my classes with. It’s an array of different styles of dance – it’s the kind of dance that is very inclusive.” – Abagail Fritz

instructor. As a freshman in high school, this Steamboat resident was first introduced to African dance when a peer did an African dance piece during the high school’s Dance Showcase. Fritz fueled that passion by making repeat visits to Western Africa to study drumming and dance, in addition to studying under master teachers around the United States. “Africa is a huge continent – each country has many ethnicities within it, and each of those ethnicities has their own song, instrument and dance,” she says. “I combine my understanding of these various styles into a fusion style that I use to facilitate my classes with. It’s an array of different styles of dance – it’s the kind of dance that is very inclusive.” Now living and teaching in Los Angeles, Fritz revisits the valley several times a year to continue teaching her Afro Fusion classes. While Steamboat is centered around the mountain and outdoor sports communities, the dance community is carving out its own niche: one that connects dancers with cultures all over the world. ❯❯ What makes artists great? The beauty of their work? The emotions invoked by their art? The legacy they create? By any of these standards, painter Rich Galusha meets the mark, and his career thus far is being celebrated in the exhibit, “Richard Galusha Retrospective: An Artist’s Journey” at Steamboat Art Museum. A resident of North Routt County, Galusha’s paintings capture the essence of Western life and the landscapes of Northwest Colorado. Having grown up on a West Texas ranch, Galusha began drawing farm animals and rolling landscapes at a young age. As he grew, his art grew with him, and his work flourished into a 30-plus-year career as a painter, teacher, gallery owner and art museum founder. Galusha is a member of the Oil Painters of America and the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, and presided over 10 years of the Steamboat Winter Carnival button contest – a tradition that continues today. Galusha uses bold colors and impressionist techniques to paint works that depict Western life and his travels across the world, including Greece, Nepal and England. “An Artist’s Journey” showcases 80 of his pieces, some of them dating back to Galusha’s first year in Steamboat in 1986. "It’s really good to see the progression – I went basically from a realist look to a more impressionistic look with my paintings. The subject is less important than the quality of the painting," Galusha says. As a teacher, Galusha shaped the course of many a young artist’s career. During the SAM retrospective, Cole Verploeg Youth Gallery displays Galusha’s portraits of his students from his time teaching at Colorado Mountain College, as well as art by select students of his, including the well-established local painters Greg Effinger and Chula Beauregard. In May, part of the Galusha exhibit will be on display at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas. These pieces will then be displayed long-term at the Eastland Community Foundation in Eastland, Texas. “Richard Galusha Retrospective: An Artist’s Journey” runs through Saturday, April 11.
