❯❯ You have arrived in a very special place in Northwest Colorado. Not only is there a focus on health and wellness, endless mountain views, abundant outdoor activities and access to nature, but Steamboat Springs is also known as a place where art springs up. The high mountain valley is rich with cultural activities, creativity experiences and arts venues. In 2017 Steamboat Springs was named a Certified Colorado Creative District, and since that time, our community has banded together and gathered momentum to bring awareness of the importance of the creative sector and to shine a light on the artistic endeavors that are inspired by the Yampa Valley’s unique sense of place. Steamboat’s cultural nonprofits and creative businesses have used the vehicle of art in many ways, one of which is to collaborate on projects that have social, environmental and educational impact. A wonderful illustration of cross sector partnerships is the Friends of the Yampa mural by Jill Bergman (and numerous volunteers) that speaks to the importance of water conservation, particularly the Yampa River. Check it out as you cross the Ninth Street pedestrian bridge, which connects Yampa Street with Howelsen Hill. Colorado Creative Industries recently announced plans to host the 2020 Creative Summit in Steamboat Springs. More than 350 creative leaders, entrepreneurs, change-makers and creative districts will gather in our lovely community to explore the boundaries of what is possible when we gather and learn from one another. Save the dates: Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14, 2020. See www.coloradocreativeindustries.org for additional information on speakers, presenters, performers, tours, and everything creative. Steamboat Creates is the umbrella advocacy organization nurturing the arts so that creativity flourishes. Find out more at www.steamboatcreates.org. We look forward to sharing our authentic Western spirit on the frontier of imagination. Kim Keith | Executive Director | Steamboat Creates 2 • Volume 13, Edition 1, 2019

about the cover Artist
Su san sch i es ser ❯❯ Susan Schiesser’s love of water directly influences her work. It’s rare you will find a piece of hers without a body of water or an aquatic creature, and the painting, “Moose Drool,” which appears on the cover of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide, is no exception. Schiesser’s graphic design background inspired this dynamic and graphic-arts-driven piece. “I wanted the moose to really stand out,” she says. “I wanted it to be bold and attention-grabbing.” The Japanese Kanji imposed onto the moose is derived from a book of Japanese erotic art. “It’s my naked girl on the Camel cigarette pack,” she says. “There was a bunch of art from the ‘50s that had subliminal things buried in it. It’s a less subtle ode to subliminal messaging.” Schiesser studied painting and welding at the San Francisco Art Institute, and began visiting Steamboat Springs during that time. She relocated to the Yampa Valley in 1997 and submerged herself in the local arts scene. Schiesser often employs vibrant color in her art. “My work has progressed into a fusion of all the different periods and styles of painting that I’ve learned,” Schiesser says. 4 • Volume 13, Edition 1, 2019

“This piece ushers in a new era for me, an evolution of my style,” Schiesser says. “Up until this point, I’ve resisted painting realistically. I always wanted an impression of something. Last year in Hawaii, I gave up the fight against myself and started doing the pieces I want to, how I want to.” Susan Schiesser’s work can be found at W Gallery in Steamboat Springs, in Fort Collins and in Kauai. A State of Flux:
Jace Romick/ R diamond gallery ❯❯ A new gallery in Steamboat Springs allows art enthusiasts to break bread with the artists whose work they’re viewing. Jace Romick Gallery, 837 Lincoln Ave., consists of two sections: the original gallery – featuring the frames and photography of Jace Romick – and a new section called R Diamond Gallery. Named after Romick’s family cattle brand, R Diamond Gallery showcases work from artists throughout Colorado. While the combined gallery features a variety of media and artistic styles, it also exhibits the Western aesthetic that is emblematic of the Jace Romick Gallery. “It’s primarily contemporary Western, mountain modern, honoring the ranching heritage of the area,” says Ashlyn Posiak, gallery director. “We’re shooting for contemporary, but not too contemporary,” Romick adds. “We want to feature contemporary art with a softer side to it, too.” The R. Diamond group began with two artists, but has since grown to 13. Romick and Posiak plan to keep the group around that size. “We sell things we believe in. Things that we would put in our own homes,” Romick says. “We’re starting to feature furniture pieces, jewelry … everything has a different look, but they all fit together. Very few people will fill a home with only photography, so now we offer these other types of art that people can put in their homes.” Arguably one of the most exciting additions to the gallery is an upstairs meeting area, which Posiak calls a “flux” space. Once a windowless set of offices, it is now wide-open, brightly lit and elegantly decorated. The room may be used to host dinners, featured artists, charity auctions and anything else needed. “It’s upscale enough for a rehearsal dinner, but casual enough for things like mixers,” Posiak says. Posiak and Romick plan to use the upstairs as a place for art buyers to interact with the artists. “For us, being a pretty art gallery is the bare minimum. We want people to be able to learn about and invest in the artist whose work they’re viewing or buying,” Posiak says. “We try to stick to that philosophy. We’re not just interested in the transaction – we’re interested in the relationship.” With the added flux space, Posiak and Romick are taking an innovative approach to an art gallery. “I don’t think we’re selling art,” Posiak says. “We’re selling an experience.” Into the Aspens, 2018 Fine Art Photography | Courtesy Jace Romick 14 • Volume 13, Edition 1, 2019

Fantasy, acrobatics and tragedy:
Piknik Theatre ❯❯ An airy spirit dances playfully while a complex monster lurks nearby in “The Tempest,” one of Shakespeare’s most whimsical works. This visual, fantastical play is the centerpiece of Piknik Theatre’s free outdoor festival this summer. Set on a fictional desert island, “The Tempest” is a playful romance on one level; on another it is an allegory, perhaps representing Shakespeare’s interpretation of art and creation. Professional actors and local performers are featured. Keta Roth – a Milner resident – plays Prospero, the protagonist, who is shipwrecked on the island with his daughter, Miranda, played by dancer Tara Lynn Steele. Austin Jacobs plays the role of Ferdinand, who falls in love with Miranda. Throughout its 11-year history, the festival’s second production has been a new work, created especially for Piknik Theatre. This year’s piece, “The Paper Bag Princess" (an acrobatic fairy tale) is ideally suited to complement “The Tempest” in the 2019 festival. The production is a collaboration among Lance Rasmussen (Macduff from the 2018 Piknik production of "Macbeth"), Steele and Jacobs, who have backgrounds in music, dance and acrobatics. “It’s always a mystery to me,” says Piknik Artistic Director Stuart Handloff, “almost right up to opening night.” Both shows last about 60 minutes and will go on, rain or shine, so come prepared for the weather. Bring a blanket or a chair, a bottle of wine and some food to make this a true picnic experience. All ages are welcome. For the second year, Piknik Theatre is expanding its production schedule beyond the summer festival. Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” runs at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church the first two weekends of October, with a blend of professional and local actors. For 2018’s fall premier performance, Piknik Theatre produced “Macbeth” – fittingly just before Halloween – to rave reviews. The lead role in "Hamlet" is played by Hannah Dubner, in an ironic twist from Shakespeare’s days at the Globe Theater, when men played the female roles. Fr. Ernest Richardson of Holy Name Catholic Church is making his Piknik Theatre debut in the role of Polonius, chief counselor to Claudius, the murderous king. St. Paul’s, with its shadowy wall sconces, baptismal font – the witches’ cauldron in “Macbeth” – well-thought-out acoustics and balcony, makes an intriguing setting for "Hamlet," Handloff says. “We’re developing a wonderful artistic collaboration with the St. Paul’s congregation. We’re so very grateful for their support.” What role will the church’s baptismal font play in “Hamlet,” one may wonder. Handloff doesn’t want to spoil the surprise, but reminds Shakespeare aficionados that water plays a significant part at one point in the plot. The October production comes shortly before the Day of the Dead; appropriate timing for Hamlet, who is famous for contemplating the fatal human condition, skull in hand. P l e i n Air Hit s M a i n Stree t ❯❯ While the phrase plein air might bring to mind imagery of sweeping landscapes, towering waterfalls and a host of other natural wonders, some of the best outdoor painting can be done in a more citified setting – as you’re sure to find out this fall, during Steamboat Art Museum’s Plein Air Event. What began as a small group of artists eight years ago has now grown to 60 painters from all over the country who come to Steamboat each year for the event. “We’ve watched it go from mostly local and regional, to people from all over,” says Betse Grassby, executive director of Steamboat Art Museum. Following a week of painting, SAM exhibits the artists’ resulting work, a judge selects winners and the work is sold. “What I love about this event is the museum is filled, but these are all subjects we know and love here in Steamboat, and might not have looked at in that way,” Grassby says. “It’s also an opportunity to start collecting pieces of art for relatively cheap.” While many similar events exist, what sets this one apart is the fact that it’s non-juried – emerging artists and plein air veterans alike can participate. “It’s really Steamboat culture, being welcoming. It’s great to watch the artists work together. They’ll be painting in the same location, but they are all painting different things in different styles. They get to experience a lot of camaraderie with other artists and it helps newer artists work their way into galleries,” Grassby says. Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide • 21

Steamboat Art Museum 2019 Plein Air Event and Exhibit Friday, Sept. 20-Friday, Sept. 27 Quick Draw event and Farmers Market Sale Saturday, Sept. 21 Opening Reception and Awards Friday, Sept. 27 Dave Santillanes Workshop Saturday, Sept. 28-Monday, Sept. 30 Exhibit and Sale run through Saturday, Nov. 2
This fall’s event has some tantalizing additions for both artists and art enthusiasts. The Quick Draw – an event where all the artists go to the same location and have two hours to complete a painting – is being held downtown, which is a contrast to its typically rural setting. The Quick Draw ends at noon, and artists display and sell their paintings the same day at the final Farmers Market of the year. Dave Santillanes, winner of the plein air category at Oil Painters of America’s 2018 juried exhibition, judges this year’s event. He is also conducting a three-day “Plein Air to Studio” workshop following the exhibit’s opening. With no shortage of beautiful landscapes – and in-town settings – from which to draw inspiration, Steamboat Art Museum’s Plein Air Event will likely continue to grow in attendance for many years to come.
