rt. Now more than ever, visual and performing arts have provided sanctuary, emotional expression and empathy throughout the weird experiences that 2020 has brought upon us all. Artists seem somehow better able to interpret these times than the rest of us, who can only stand in admiration of their creative genius. Join us in celebrating their work in this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide.

COVID-19 has brought challenges to our community, but it has also given us time for reflection and time to evaluate what is most important to us. For me, Steamboat wouldn’t be the community it is without arts and culture. The first settlers arrived with an organ and paints for their new life in the West. In 1916, Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Center & Camp was established in Strawberry Park and is today the longest continually running performing arts camp in the country. Steamboat Springs truly is the “Frontier of Imagination.” COVID-19 proved how resilient Steamboat’s creators, performers, photographers, sculptors, musicians, actors, dancers, filmmakers, writers and visual artists are. First Friday Artwalk, featuring 17 local galleries, moved online. The Chief Theater gave us virtual performances. But now, our arts and culture organizations face challenges they never could have imagined. With a summer of cancelled events and fundraisers, it is time for our community and visitors to ask themselves how much they value arts and culture in their lives. How often do you engage with music, dance, performance, visual arts and design? What would you do to keep creativity in your life? This year, you are in a unique position to be able to give back to the creative organizations that have brought so much vibrancy to our community. Volunteer your expertise, donate, or spread the word that this year, arts and culture organizations need your help. As you flip through the pages of this guide, consider purchasing a piece of art or donating to an organization you love. Together, we are a stronger community. Together we can keep the arts alive in Steamboat Springs. Kim Keith | Executive Director | Steamboat Creates, Colorado Certified Creative District Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide • 3

Gregory Block, "Pocket Aces"

T

he above note was attached to the saddle that artist Gregory Block chose as the main subject for his painting “Pocket Aces” (oil, 30x24) – the cover art for this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. “My paintings always focus primarily on objects – in particular, one object,” Block says. “It starts with that one object, in this case, the saddle. It starts to build character, a story.” Block found the saddle in Annie’s Home Consignments with the note hinting at a fascinating backstory. After hanging onto the saddle for seven years, Block decided to incorporate it into “Pocket Aces” this past February. “I wanted to go with an Old West theme, an Old Western photograph with a contemporary twist,” Block says. “The story that came to mind was about a gambler.” The objects selected for the piece not only share a theme, but also similar aesthetic elements. “I was playing with the Old Western photograph trope,” Block explains. “You notice in old photos that anything shiny 4 • Volume 14, Edition 1, 2020

creates kind of a halo of light in the photos. I’d recently gotten a WWI-era replica revolver and so that was another cool object to give it that shiny glint.” Block’s creative process was impacted very little by the outbreak of COVID-19. “Some of us artists are more well-adjusted to staying home and physically distancing,” he says. “It’s been a lot easier in terms of producing work – more time and space. Fewer distractions.” With the extra time and creative space, Block created something different than anything he’s worked on yet. In an effort to depict the circular nature that time seems to take in quarantine, he hammered thousands of nails in intricate, circular patterns on a 7-foot-diameter round board and ground the nail heads to sparkle. Working hours a day, the project took Block a month to complete. Learn more about this piece, titled “Aion,” in the story “Steamboat Renaissance” (page 18). For Block, the majority of COVID-19’s changes have been for the positive. “I’ve been able to really just focus on the things that I love,” he says. “Spending more time with family, in our little COVID bubble, and giving more love and care to people.” Gregory Block’s art is on display in Steamboat Springs at Gallery 89 and in Denver at Gallery 1261. locally grown alfalfa and clover, which results in a rich, golden honey. The honey is harvested in the fall, at the same time that three Honeycrisp apple trees on the couple’s property produce. The timing has serendipitous results. An overabundance of apples two years ago led to an experiment, and the Bakers produced their first jar of honey infused with apple and crushed cinnamon. “I’m not a creative person, but when this worked out, I thought, ‘Holy smokes, look what I created,’ and it led to a whole new arm of the business,” Bethany says. Outlaw Apiaries soon added Triple Crown Blackberry Creamed Honey, using SUZI MITCHELL

Many people have a television in their living room, but few have a beehive. For Bethany and Perry Baker, it makes perfect sense. The Hayden couple met through the beekeeping network and are passionate about bees – so much so, in fact, that they founded Outlaw Apiaries in 2017 and Bee the Future, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to educating youth. Beekeeping is in their blood. Bethany’s grandfather tended bees, as did Perry’s father, whose family homesteaded in Granby. The couple started out with 40 hives and now have over 500, dotting ranches and farms along the Yampa River Basin. The bees forage all summer on an abundant buffet of

Colorado-sourced plump berries, and Alpine Strawberry Creamed Honey to its repertoire. Its best seller is a chocolate-infused salted ghost pepper honey. “It’s great added to a cup of coffee first thing in the morning – the kick of the pepper tingles your throat,” Bethany says with laughter. The chief taster in the house is four-year-old Nico. He and 18-month-old Teal enjoy the constant entertainment of the indoor hive. Bethany and Perry drilled a hole into the side of the house to allow the bees constant

access to the outdoors. The observation hive enables swarms of visitors to watch the colony in action. “Our main focus is to show people why bees are so important and why we need them,” Bethany says. Bethany has offered beekeeping classes to educate people on the plight of the declining bee population. “We are trying to show people how they can integrate bees into their life and what they can do to save them,” she says. “I believe we’ve already made an impact.”

f you’ve wondered how to please your sweet and savory taste buds at the same time, here is one solution. Bethany Baker shared a go-to recipe using her chocolate-infused salted ghost pepper honey.

Prepare two small glasses by dipping the rim in a plate of honey and then kosher salt. If you use enough honey and salt, the honey will run down the side of the rim to create a beautiful and tasty presentation. Fill the glass with ice and set aside. Gently warm the honey and tequila in a saucepan until blended. This will prevent the raw properties of the honey hardening on the ice. In a cocktail shaker combine tequila, honey, lime juice and ice. Shake the margarita a few times until it cools completely. Pour over ice, into the prepared glasses. This formerly secret family recipe is a year-round favorite. Paulina Johnson:

I just started collecting paper and junk mail; cutting it, shredding it, making stuff with it, to kind of give it a new life.

16 • Volume 14, Edition 1, 2020

Exploring the Art of Paper | By RACHEL MILLER Steamboat Springs artist Paulina Johnson’s passion for paper artwork grew from a surprising place: annoyance with one aspect of her previous profession. “One of the things I started noticing and disliking about the profession of graphic design was the amount of paper waste that it creates,” Johnson says. “So, I just started collecting paper and junk mail; cutting it, shredding it, making stuff with it, to kind of give it a new life. My whole purpose was to take what could be envisioned as waste and trash and give it a new life as a piece of art.” For the past three years, Johnson’s new medium has become a learning experience. She went from focusing on the graphic design profession for many years to diving into the world of paper art, which she creates out of her studio, Copper Case. Johnson’s paper art has evolved from the traditions of paper quilling, origami and paper cutting. Cutting paper into strips of varying lengths, forming the strips into shapes, and then bringing those shapes together to form life has been a new inspiration for the artist. To perfect her art, Johnson recently challenged herself to a 100-day project on Instagram, creating one piece of art on a 6x6 square each day for 100 consecutive days. Last April was the perfect time to start this project, amidst the quarantine, Johnson says, because she had so much free, creative time spent at home. No one piece of art is ever the same, and with this challenge, Johnson explored elements like dimension, shape, lighting and depth, all while trying to tell a story. Pieces from the 100-day project can be viewed at www.coppercase.com/100-days-of-paper-lines. “What inspires me from one project to the next is the mistakes I make,” Johnson says. “I’m constantly trying to figure out ways to create better. Making something random every day has really allowed me to explore shapes that are harmonious in each different composition.” Paulina Johnson’s artwork is on display at Pine Moon Fine Art in downtown Steamboat Springs. Her work can also be viewed on her studio’s website, www.CopperCase.com, or her Instagram page, @paulinamjohnson.

Renaissance Time alone can mean time to create, to try something new, to get lost in a world not dominated by CNN and Fox News. For artists in Northwest Colorado, Stay at Home translated to Create at Home, as the forced isolation resulted in a Steamboat Renaissance.

“S

cience will save us, but art will get us through. As the pandemic continues, I've been drawn to themes that express both the Covidmandated isolation and also ways we can cope. In addition to painting, music has become one outlet that helps me and (my wife) Melissa get through this. Here, I used her and her violin as a model for source photos, placing her in a made-up second story balcony setting where her concert is heard by neighbors in adjoining buildings and those in the street below.

“T

his piece is a commentary on time in all its perplexing glory. Many Native American cultures viewed time as being circular, as do many cultures around the globe. While staying at home day-in and day-out during Colorado's stay-at-home order, I think many of us felt that on any given day, we were reliving the day before that, and the day before that ... The concentric circles in this piece can either be viewed as expanding or closing in on themselves. There were days when I felt the walls were closing in, and others when my awareness turned to the expansion of my imagination, of my love of humanity, my passion for creating. The piece is titled ‘Aion’ after the Hellenistic deity of unbounded, circular time, and the universe. Both themes speak directly to the piece's origin.”

created paintings with abstract backgrounds, then based on what I could see in the painting, or from animals that came into my dreams, I added the animal figures. The titles of the paintings are inspired by the book, ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ by Gabriel García Márquez. I was inspired to paint this piece, 'Rats in the Time of Covid,' when in a dream, I saw that a friend of mine was gently removing rats that were cuddled next to a sofa.”
