the instagram body empowerment movement phenomenon

DECEMBER FEATURES At the time of holiday and celebration, I feature four incredible women who inspired me with messages of courage, beauty, and self-appreciation and holiday-inspired outfits. We all have parties to attend and outfits to dress up in over the holidays, so let us channel these beautiful ladies and rock whatever we wear with a smile! Remember you are a precious being who deserves love and fun—so give those things to yourself this holiday season. These four women truly embody self-acceptance and do so with holiday style and flare. it is an honor to share their stories and continue the cycle of inspiration. From accepting that our bodies are worthy of greatness, right now, to embracing a new fashion idea we may have not considered before, these women are out there doing it and saying “you should too!’ And we’re listening. Own your curves, accept yourself, and never apologize for your beauty.

Sophia Pickle Sophia Pickle is a makeup artist with over ten years of experience. Her work can be seen in magazines, music videos, film, and on television shows such as Desperate Housewives, ER, House M.D. and American Idol. Sophia spent her early years as an athlete but her love for art and painting eventually transitioned into makeup artistry and she now has a love for making people beautiful. She is very talented at what she does and we are excited to share some of her beauty tips.

skorch beauty Q. How would you define your style of artistry? A. Free! I pride myself on being able to adapt to different styles of artistry and makeup. I mix different types of makeup with airbrushing. I love letting my brain go wild and painting abnormal beauty just as much as I love enhancing someone’s natural beauty. Although… I have been told that I have a flare for the sexy. Q. You were very sporty growing up and hardly wore makeup. What led you to become such a talented makeup artist who was even voted the best bridal hair and makeup artist in Orange County by TheKnot.com? A. If it wasn’t for taking a painting class, I would have never known how artsy I was. I fell in love with makeup because my “painting” Dried instantly and the canvases were endless! The best part of doing makeup is it can completely change the way someone feels about themselves. That feeling and confidence is better than anything money can buy in an art gallery.

Q. What beauty product can you not live without? A. EYEBROWS!!! I am a natural blonde so without makeup I loose all of my features. I swear by the TooFaced ‘Blonde-y’ eyebrow pencil. I always use it on blondes and most redheads. I have even used it on some brunettes. I also have a love affair with volumizing mascara! DiorShow by Christian Dior has been my go-to for years. I love all the new colors that it comes in now. Q. The cold winter is upon us and brings with it dry skin, hair, and brittle nails. What is your advice to keep the dryness at bay this time of year? Are there any particular products we should opt for this winter? A. Personally I know exactly what it’s like to have very dry skin. I have rosacea and without proper moisturizer my face gets so dry and tight. This winter I switched over to the Cleansing Milk and Rose Day Cream from Dr. Hauschka and my skin has loved it. I try to stay as hydrated as possible because dry skin never looks cute un-

beautyq&a Q. What is your trick to reduce redness and shine in photographs without having a caked on look in person? A. I actually use an anti shine product on my clients if they are really oily or sweaty because it temporarily shuts down the producseen tion of oil. You put Sophia’s work in it on before makeup and it should Q. My favorite body lotion is still Hawaiian Tropic “Lime Coolada After Sun Moisturizer”. I have tried lotions that were $100+ but this one makes my dry skin feel great, its smells awesome and its less than You’ve $10!

skorch beauty Q. How can one add some color and bronze to dull winter skin without it being too much for winter? A. Mixing a liquid bronzer made for your face into your moisturizer is the easiest and most natural looking. If you have good skin, you may not even need to follow up with foundation. You could skip right to a creamy blush. But to be honest, I love embracing that gorgeous fair skin that comes with winter. I like to play it up with illuminizers and let the porcelain glow :)

beautyq&a Q. It’s that time again when everyone is making resolutions. As far as beauty is concerned, are there any habits or routines that you think would be beneficial to commit to in the New Year? A. Trying new colors would be a great habit to get into for the New Year! People get so stuck in their routine face that they become afraid of change. Realistically, how many shades of taupe can you own? There are too many gorgeous colors in the world to just stick to the same ones. Go buy a new eyeliner color or a bold lipstick and try it for at least a week. Your fears should diminish and at the end of the day it’s just makeup, not a lifelong commitment. If you don’t like it, wash it off and try a different color.

Q. Is there any other expert beauty advise you want to leave us with? A. Whatever makeup decisions you make, wear them confidently. Your face and hair could look perfect but if you are insecure, that’s all people will see. Nothing is sexier than confidence!

lashes and how to get them...

The legend goes that that

an American Cinema Director by the name of David W. Griffit invented false lashes in 1916 to create a special effect of “fluttering” lashes for silent movie actress Seena Owen. The trend was adopted by Hollywood actresses on set but didn’t become popular amongst most women until the 1930’s. The trend faded away but made a huge come back in the 1960’s with full, large lashes. Consumers didn’t care how fake their lashes looked. It was the fashion. The popularity of false lashes came in and out of fashion as most trends do, but it is no secret that our lust for false eyelashes are at an all time high. Today we have a handful of options to achieve those long, full lashes from extensions, serums, and daily applications, and more woman than ever are enhancing their lashes. It’s not surprising that luxurious lashes are so desirable: they add instant glamour, and widen small, tired eyes to make you look instantly younger. Even though the use of false eyelashes are at an all

time high, there are still woman who are intimidated by the process of applying their own false lashes.

Applying false lashes can be tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a quick and easy process. We talked to a few experts That helped put together a stepby-step tutorial on applying false eyelashes.

skorch tips

1. Choose the lash type that best suits you. There are single strips or individuals, as well as real or synthetic. “I love Miss

poke. Use a small pair of scissors to cut the tips of lashes if needed. 3. Apply quality glue at the base of the lash. Pro makeup artist Stephanie Eloise recommends Dou. “I love Dou in the dark tone since it dries dark and blends well with the lashes” says Stephanie. You can also apply the glue to a toothpick or Q-Tip and run the base of the lash through the glue. Wait several seconds for the glue to become more tactile and sticky before placing onto your own lash line. 4. Apply the lash to the base of your natural lash line on top of your actual lashes, not on the eyelid itself. “Press down lightly on the middle first, then work your way to the outsides” says Vanessa.

Adoro eyelashes” says pro Makeup artist Vanessa Haro, “they are affordable and fabulous”. 2. Before you start to apply, size the lashes to fit your eyes. If they are too big they can lift off or

5. Apply mascara last so you can integrate the natural lashes with the false ones, making sure they blend into each other. You may also follow with eyeliner as this will help hide the false lash line but be sure to apply eyeliner gently.
