MY FINAL AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. We are in the season in which we celebrate God coming to us, in person, in Jesus Christ. In the words of the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ, God came to us in Jesus Christ and “shared our common lot.” God became one of us; human in form and likeness. Once upon a time, we might have wondered if God fully understood the challenges and struggles of being human. (That’s a silly notion, isn’t it? If being God is what we think it means, then God would have known what it is to be human without having to come to us in human form. Still, we needed to be convinced.) Since God took on human form and likeness in Jesus Christ, we now know God has lived the breadth and depth of our human experience. God knows and understands you and your life. God, also, knows you and your life are not always as whole, fulfilled, and complete as you would like it to be. There are times when we need more peace, love, faith or joy in our lives. There are times when we need our self-confidence and self-esteem boosted or renewed. There are times we need our wounds healed, our hurts comforted, our faith strengthened, our sins forgiven, our guilt released, our shame vanquished, our love and joy increased, and more. God came to us in Jesus Christ to do these things for us; .. and Jesus Christ has done them, and more, for us. You are loved by God more fully and completely than you know or imagine. God rejoices in you, in spite of whatever sins you carry on your heart or in your memory; .. in spite of whatever negative ways in which you might think of yourself; .. in spite of any imperfections you have not yet been able to conquer. You are precious and glorious in God’s sight, and God loves you. And, in the end, You are going to know the fullness of God’s love for you - and you will not doubt it, in any way, ever again. Maybe you think you know it, now. But you still know it only in part. But if you keep on the way of faith, you will know it fully, even as you are fully known and understood by God, as Paul said to the Christians in Corinth. You will come to know even more. Throughout all my years as pastor, I have heard people say, “You don’t have to go to church to be a Christian.” 3

I would challenge you to re-think that belief, because Jesus went to worship in the synagogue and Temple throughout His life, from His youth to the days before His death. Can you and I really be like Him (which is what it means to be Christian) if we do not do the same? Also Jesus was always working to bring people into the fellowship, mission, service, and faith of the community of God’s people. Christ was always bringing people from the “excluded” class into the “included” class: women, children, lepers, the blind, the lame, Gentiles, and more. He wanted people to know the love, support, community, mission, service, and “reason for being” that is found, nurtured, supported, and fulfilled in and through community. As always, I hope and yearn for the same for you and St. John UCC. I give great thanks to God for calling me to serve as your pastor. God brought me to a place where I would come to know and live “the love, support, community, mission, service, and ‘reason for being’ that is found, nurtured, supported, and fulfilled in and through community.” Over 5 years before being “called” to St. John UCC, I wrote down the kind of church to which I desired God to call me. This is what I wrote: A community in which the rich diversity of people is desired, celebrated, and realized; .. a sharing and an openness to all others, so the prejudices and stereotypes of the world are non-existent; .. an excitement and a celebration of God and community; .. a responsive, flexible, spontaneous, ever-evolving group of people who are continually improving and moving forward; .. people who are creative innovators who find new ways to welcome people into the reign of God’s love and life on earth; .. a community that is bringing people to exciting, vibrant, fulfilled life; .. a place where people know they can come and will leave with more life-fullness than they came; .. a place of rich teaching and learning; .. a place willing to risk. Thank you for being such a community of faith and God’s people. It’s been my honor to serve as your pastor. God brought me to a place of great fulfillment and completion. There would have been no better church to which God could have called me, for my final church, than to you and this church. God and you blessed me, richly! Thank you! It’s been my honor. May you know God’s fullest and richest blessings as you continue to follow and fulfill the call of God for St. John UCC and yourself. 4

The Holidays are fast approaching. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time gathering firewood and preparing it for this winter. We have enjoyed the fruits of our labor a few times already. Our wood furnace makes us all warm and cozy. As I write this my hands are still freezing from attempting to scrape the ice from my windshield with a dull scraper. I’m prepared for some thing’s but obviously not everything. As I look forward to this holiday season and the coming months to follow I realize there will be many things I’m not prepared for. Plans will change and in the midst of joys there will be disappointments and missed opportunities. Honestly I can cut, split, and chop wood without much emotional stress. The process of preparing wood can be very therapeutic for me. The unseen sudden changes and expectations the holidays bring, often leaves me in an emotional numbness. I escape to my hobbies and interests but the stress this time of the year can bring for me is often a challenge. I miss my Parents and Brothers and Sister. Not seeing them at this time of the year is very difficult for me. In the midst of this coming holiday season I’m also struggling with the unknown I see ahead of our congregation. I’m a planner, who likes to be prepared ahead of time. Not knowing what to expect with the incoming interim pastor elevates my level of stress. As I approach this time in the life of the church I look to God for guidance. Believing leads to trusting. One of my favorite scripture verses is Proverbs 3:5-6. It says “trust in the Lord with all heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight. Leaning on “our own understanding” often means adopting the world’s way of relieving stress. That may be alcohol, drugs, food, or mindless entertainment etc… Instead of seeking Gods assistance in our distress we self-medicate. We attempt to satiate our emotional needs without God. Perhaps no passage in Scripture better captures how to handle stress than Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The Lord tells us not to be anxious about anything, but rather to turn everything over to Him in prayer. Lifting our burdens and concerns to a holy and righteous God daily will mitigate or eliminate the stress in our lives. This holiday and upcoming months will be a challenge for most of us. When the stressors of life hit you hardest turn to God. Share your life with God through prayer. We need to seek His peace daily by filling our minds with His Word, lifting all things to Him in prayer, and sitting at His feet in awe and reverence. It is only by His grace, mercy and love that the stress in our lives can be managed. Consumed By the Call Kevin T. Eckert, Director of Children & Youth Ministries, Director of Technologies Ministry

CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLELIGHT SERVICE 5:00 PM DECEMBER 24

NEW YEAR’S EVE COMMUNION SERVICE 6:00 PM DECEMBER 31 Pastor Donnley’s final act and service as our pastor will be officiating at the New Year’s Eve Communion Service, which will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Please sign up on the bulletin board if you plan on attending this service. We need to insure we prepare adequate amounts of the Bread and the Cup. We could have a larger attendance than in previous years, since it is his final pastoral act with us. The service is personal in nature, as the worship bulletin is self-guided, and you decide how brief or long you stay. The bulletin will have an introduction to the service, mediations, prayers, readings for reflection, scriptures, instructions on how to receive Holy Communion, and more. In case you wonder how long Pastor Donnley has been officiating at such a service, his first one was Dec. 31, 1983.

To St. John UCC: There are two verses of scripture which speak the truth of my heart: "I give thanks to my God, always, for you, because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus." (1 Cor. 1:4) and "I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers." (Eph. 1:16) Yet, even these words fall short of fully revealing and expressing the thanks I feel for the great and humbling honor you bestowed upon me by calling me to be your pastor 15+ years ago; and, more presently, at your celebration of my years of ministry and impending retirement. I felt overwhelmed with emotion, honor and gratitude throughout the celebration and the next morning in worship. I will resist mentioning the names of persons whom I want to thank, because I know there were quiet, unseen servants who were also instrumental in planning, coordinating, and completing this amazing weekend. I thank all of you, fully and deeply, whether you were visible or "behind the scenes;" whether your part was large or small. You honored me in ways far beyond anything I expected. Also, thank you for the gifts - the calf harness and lead rope, the batteries, and the legal pad and leather holder. The harness, rope and batteries will be appropriately displayed in my home. Surely, "conversation pieces," but they will be displayed! Thank you for everything. The moments, which became hours, will be a clear and sacred memory as long as I live. Pastor Donnley

GOD’S TIMING God’s timetable may move slowly, but it does move surely. Pastor Audley Black’s church near the south coast of Jamaica has been in a building program since at least 2005. That was the first time I visited his church and saw that they were expanding. The last time I was there, in the spring of 2011, some of the walls were up. By that summer, they had started on the roof. When I suggested to Pastor Black that perhaps the church would be done by 2013 when I thought I might return, he said it was a possibility. There was no hint of disappointment that this project could take 8 years or longer! No, Pastor Black and his people are excited about what God is doing, and they’re patient with His timing. We are often not that patient. We want our church to grow quickly, our young people to mature right away, and our problems to be fixed today. Maybe we need to be reminded that some things take time, God’s time. For instance, when the Israelites first left Egypt, God sent them on the long route to the Promised Land (Ex. 13:17-18). During that time He prepared them, taught them, and challenged them. In our microwave world, we want everything done instantaneously. But, sometimes, that’s not God’s plan. Let’s seek God’s help and learn to accept His timing. Dave Branon He does not lead me year by year, Nor even day by day; But step by step my path unfolds; My Lord directs my way. Barbara C. Budget—The council approved the budget for the coming year. Church council also talked about how it might help Stewardship with its huge responsibilities. A few ideas were talked about, such as; putting short explanations in the church program, of how church money is used. Judy Garkey volunteered to sit in at the next Stewardship meeting and share a couple of ideas and to let them know that we appreciated their efforts. Ulan thought that would be a good idea and the council approved. Jazz Service—Council approved to grant $400. toward the expense of the Jazz Service. Discussion—Jane quickly explained that the Janshen Fund was very specific in how it was to be used. The council thanked Jane and decided that if any other explanation was needed; the church council would invite Lyle to a church council meeting for a brief refresher course. Adjournment with Mizpah Benediction. Respectfully submitted, Judy Garkey
