To celebrate, learn and share a meal we will gather for the 3rd annual Unity Fest planned by our own Prism Lighthouse group, an Open and Affirming Ministry of St. John’s. We at St. John UCC with our Open and Affirming policy are one of the congregations open to the LGBTQ community.

THE REV. JOHN C. DORHAUER ELECTED PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MINISTER OF UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST During General Synod last month John Dorhauer, former conference minister of the Southwest Conference UCC was elected as the ninth general minister and president of the UCC. Prior to his role at the Southwest Conference, Dorhauer served as associate conference minister in the Missouri Mid-South Conference, and also served local churches in rural Missouri. He has a Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary where he studied white privilege and its effects on the church. His new book Beyond Resistance: The Institutional Church Meets the Postmodern World, was released in June. Dorhauer is passionate about justice. Two statements that shape his theology are: “God is love. God is just.” Along with his passion for justice, Dorhauer has a passion for and love of baseball – specifically the St. Louis Cardinals – music, literature and poetry. He has been married to his wife for nearly 31 years and they have three children.

Join us to celebrate - The gift of God’s diversity especially in LGBTQ community. Join us to learn - What still needs to be done to achieve equal rights for the LGBTQ community in housing, jobs and more. Join us to share a meal - When we eat together, especially to share bread, Christ is among us feeding us in body and spirit. The invitation is for all - all church groups and members are welcome to participate in this event. We would love all ministries to take part and be part of the fun. Our next Prism Lighthouse meeting is Monday, August 17th at 6:30 pm in the Chapel Hearth room. Everyone is welcome to come and share ideas and thoughts with us. Unity Fest can be a fun time for all.

CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS July 13, 2015 Members present: Tim Ebbers, President, Judy Garkey, Jane Krug, Ulan Price, Deb Rockey, Deb Scott, Patty Weik, Pastor Nayiri, ex-officio.

the Council and Ministries will likely not be done until we have “lived into” this for a few months.

Review Structure Reorg Meeting: Overall, the All-Ministry meeting on Sunday regarding the proposed restructuring plan was well-received. There were many questions on the details of the rolls of Council members and Ministry members and how this would streamline and increase the ease of communication between all. It was suggested that Endowment remain a separate board from Council and Ministries because of its responsibilities and the nature of its function.

Search Committee: Tim shared names of those people who were suggested by members of the congregation or who indicated they would be interested in serving on the Search Committee. A total of 22 were submitted. Council discussed and will be contacting potential nominees to see who is interested and/or able to commit to this process. We will make selection from this remaining group at the next Council meeting. Recognize Those Who Have Volunteered: We will have a special recognition of those who have contributed time and efforts to fill in gaps in staffing over the last few years.

Upcoming Timeline: A proposed timeline from Pastor Nayiri was reviewed. This included gathering and updating membership information to ease communication within the church and provide information that will be needed for the church profile. A survey to discerning one’s spiritual gifts will also be presented.

Financial Statement: Financial statement was approved as presented. We are in much better position than we were a year ago at this time though it was noted that we will be having additional costs from hiring an administrative assistant and custodial service moving forward.

A previously appointed team is working on a new vision statement. A congregational meeting will be scheduled to share and vote on the proposed vision statement, restructure of Council/Ministry and the results of Council’s selection of the Search Committee members. We will follow with a celebration of job/gifts, etc. The rewriting of bylaws regarding the restructure of

Adjournment: Adjourned with the Mizpah Benediction. Respectfully submitted, Deb Rockey, Council Secretary

If your understanding of the divine made you kinder, more empathetic, and impelled you to express sympathy in concrete acts of loving-kindness, this was good theology. But if your notion of God made you unkind, belligerent, cruel, of self-righteous, or if it led you to kill in God's name, it was bad theology. ― Karen Armstrong,

The family of Ruth Rockey would like to thank you all for the love and support we felt during the past weeks following Ruth's hospitalization and passing. Thank you to Pastor Nayiri for her hospital visits and beautiful funeral service (it was just as Ruth requested). Thanks to those who visited, sent cards, provided food and other support during that time. The funeral luncheon was delicious and everything looked very nice. We know you all miss her as we do and it's wonderful to know that she was so loved by her St. John family as she was by us.

Dear Friends, “Kids Coats and Clothes” thank you for the monetary donation to our program. The timing could not have been better, as we are busy buying supplies for the upcoming school year. People like you make the world a better place, and we are so grateful. God Bless & Thank you with hugs. Cherie & Jennifer
