AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. One of my Sunday morning rituals before worship is to glance at cnn.com to learn of any late-breaking news so I might include particularly newsworthy items in my pastoral prayer. This morning, Sunday, March 20, I caught the report that the March 11th earthquake “shifted Japan's Oshika Peninsula 17 feet in na east-southeasterly direction toward the epicenter, and dropped it by 3.9 ft,” according to the Geospatial Information Authority in Tsukuba, Japan. I found myself dumbstruck (Webster’s definition - made silent by astonishment) that the earthquake had actually permanently lowered the entire peninsula by 4‘ and moved it by 17‘. That‘s almost unfathomable to me. My only response, besides telling someone about this, was ―Wow!‖ Former Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab physicist Marion Fulk reported that the earthquake had power and energy that was 31,250 times greater than the combined power and energy of the two atomics we dropped in Hiroshima-Nagasaki, Japan at the end of World War II. 31,000+ times greater; and it was significantly less powerful (9.0) than the 1960 earthquake off Chile (9.5) ―Wow!‖ Just think with me, for a moment. We, as a world human community, have been able to harness incredible power and energy through explosives, hydro-electric and nuclear energy and power. But what we have been able to do in relation to the power and force of creation is almost nothing in comparison. So much for our usual understanding of God‘s words to humankind in the first chapter of Genesis: "...fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." There is no subduing the earth, if we think that subduing the earth is about “conquering and bringing (the earth) into subjection” or “bringing (the earth) under our control by the exertion of our will,” 3

both of which are dictionary definitions of the word, subdue. We will never make the power and forces of creation subject to our will and control. Only God will do that, and in time. Paul reminds us in his Letter to the Romans that Christ subjected creation to His will - probably a reference His calming the storm on the sea, etc. - “in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay…” (8:20-21). It is part of what our faith in Jesus Christ proclaims - that there will be a day when creation, itself, will be transformed by the power of God through Jesus Christ - that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. For some people, this is carrying faith a little bit too far - to believe that God will actually create a new heaven and a new earth. And maybe it is just a metaphor for the transforming power of Jesus Christ? But that is something I know and believe in - the transforming power of Jesus Christ in my life. I have been transformed - and live a changed and new life because of Jesus Christ and His life, death, resurrection, forgiveness, love and grace; as have many others. It is also something I live to remember, reclaim, deepen and expand in my living and my relationships with God and others through the prayerfulness and reflection of the season of Lent. I strive to die to my sinful ways - and my unfaithfulness to God - a little more, each Lent; then rise to new life in Christ on Easter morning through His grace and my faith. It is the journey of Lent for all of us who believe in Him. I hope you will find time this Lent to do the same. It is vital that we do, if we are going to know and live the fulfilled, abundant and whole life for which He lived, died, and was raised.

SPRING ASSOCIATION MEETING It‘s not often that we get to have face-to-face conversation with our General Minister and President, Geoffrey Black, but that‘s just what we are setting out to do at our joint Spring Meeting. Please join your church friends and UCC neighbors in Bloomington on Saturday, April 30, for a day with Geoffrey Black. A town-hall style meeting will allow for good conversation with our President, and you may submit questions in advance or during the meeting itself. We‘ll have good conversation and fellowship, sparking worship with Geoffrey Black preaching and the bell choir of Morton Community Church bringing us joy through their music, and time for our individual Associations‘ annual business meetings. ~ Kathy Lawes If you are interested in attending there are forms in the office. Please contact Kirsten.

Kevin’s Korner... March was a great month! We have had great attendance to our after school Helix program on Thursdays, and we managed to pull off a 24 hr lock-in. I‘m happy to report that we had 52 kids at our lock-in. We played, talked, learned and camped. Some kids even baked and cleaned. Our chaperones all had a chance to spend time getting to know the kids. I‘d love to thank those who stepped up and helped us pull this lock-in off. Without your willingness to help we couldn‘t have done it. Many of you donated food, thank you. Your efforts were very much appreciated by all. The kids ate and loved everything. I‘ve received several positive comments about our lock-in from both parents and kids. Some have requested that I pursue a week long retreat with a similar format (I’ll have to think about that). It seems the last five months have gone by so fast for me. Between Christ First, Fitness Classes, Helix, Travel, a Youth Conference, winter retreat, sub sales and the holidays it‘s been pretty crazy. I have big plans personally for my spring but I think part of those plans need to include some R&R (and a triathlon?). Many of you know R&R is hard for me because I’m always working on the next big project (right now it’s VBS). Anyone interested in teaching a Christ First Weightloss Class? I could use the occasional help. Consumed by the Call, Kevin Eckert Director of Children & Youth Ministries Director of Technology

DISASTER RELIEF FOR THE PACIFIC EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI Congregations across the UCC lifted prayers and raised funds on the first Sunday of Lent in support of our sisters and brothers in Japan and Hawaii impacted by the catastrophic earthquake and resulting tsunami which struck Friday, March 11. UCC and Global Ministries staff are in regular communication with Global Ministries mission personnel in Japan. The comprehensive disaster in Japan continues to unfold as the cooling mechanisms at four nuclear power reactors have malfunctioned, causing explosions and some radiation contamination. One Great Hour of Sharing emergency funds are on the way to the United Church of Christ in Japan. Anyone wishing to send funds may direct them through St. John by placing them in the offering plate or dropping them off in the office. We will forward them to United Church of Christ through the Illinois Conference. Please mark them paid to Wider Church Ministries and in the notes or memo line Pacific earthquake/tsunami. Donations may also be made out and sent directly to Wider Church Ministries, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115. EASTER LILIES Due to the late Easter the florists are not able to guarantee what will still be in bloom. The cost for flowers has gone up to $11. We realize that this may be a deterrent for some but we would still love to have a garden of flowers in the sanctuary for Easter. Here is the plan‌. If you wish to order a lily through the church, please turn in the form below with your money by April 13th . We also encourage you to bring in your own flowers or have them delivered before noon on Good Friday. (Please mark them with your name.) You will also need to fill out the form below and turn it in by April 17th if you would like your plant recognized in the bulletin with a dedication. You can pick up your flower after the service on Easter Sunday. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Easter Lily ($ 11.00) X Quantity _____ Enclosed is $__________________ _____ I/We will bring flowers from home or have our own delivered before noon on Good Friday.

L AYCAR E M I NIST RY Psalm 23:2-3 ―He maketh me lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul………. It‘s spring!!! So much to do! Get that spring cleaning done! Wash those windows! Get that lawn cleaned up! Go, Go, Go! When I was thinking about this article, my thoughts were about ‗having so many things to do‘ and then I started thinking ―What is it that slows me down?‖ Believe it or not, the first thing that came to mind were those SPEED BUMPS in the parking lot at FHN Memorial Hospital! Yup! You have no choice…You can‘t race over them - you have to slow down…So, here we go - today I will do things in a calm and slowed down manner…and if I can do that today, why can‘t I do that every day? I like to start my days by asking God what it is that I am expected to do - and I ask God to guide me in order that I do a job that is pleasing to Him…I know that I try to balance too many things, so I need to prioritize my list. I need to find ways to replenish my spirit each day...that means, I need to pray more often… How do you cope? What are your SPEED BUMPS? I find that if I just sit down a few minutes and try to empty my mind, talk to God a little, and take a deep breath, I feel better physically. That acts as a SPEED BUMP for me. The world looks a lot better to me. So, along with prayer, Bible study, and ministering to others, we can restore our spirits with rest. After all God created the world in six day and rested on the seventh. Why shouldn‘t we rest? Rest deserves to take its place as one of the spiritual disciplines. There is something to be said about this Laycare Ministry business - I think we all look at it as a gift from God - a gift that passes from one person to another as we reach out to the needs of our friends and neighbors. So, at the end of our days, I pray that God will look at us and say ―Well done, my servants, well done.‖ 10

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our ladies are so dedicated to knitting the Prayer Shawls and they do a lovely job. Now, I ask of you - do you have large gift boxes just sitting in a closet? The ‗robe‘ size? We would be so happy if you would donate some of those boxes to this ministry. We have been purchasing them at the Dollar Tree Store, but now they haven‘t been carrying them - We need at least one dozen boxes. We thank you in advance for all of your help.. Peace and Love, Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator, Laycare Ministry

S T EWARDSHIP M I NIST RY Some people view principles of the Old Testament as ending with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. After all, this great event marked the end of the old era and the establishment of the new covenant. One area in which people think this way is that of tithing. They reason as follows: ―When you can show me in the New Testament where it says, ‗Thou shalt tithe,‘ then I will tithe.‖ Although on the surface that reasoning sounds O.K., there are at least two major problems with it. First, nowhere does the New Testament state, ―Thou shalt not tithe.‖ Second, the reason the New Testament does not contain that statement is that tithing was not a requirement that started when the law was given. The principle of tithing existed before the law and during the law; it has never been rescinded by God. Thus, even though the commands of the law came to an end when Christ was offered on Calvary as the perfect sacrifice, tithing did not. In fact, tithing simply follows the pattern of ―first fruits‖ giving by which we give to God the first part of our income, not the bits and pieces which might be left over. Tithing is putting our giving to God first rather than at the end of our spending after all of our bills are paid. Tithing is an area of our Christianity that requires faith in God‘s promises and in God‘s provisions. Let‘s face it — at first glance, tithing really isn‘t very logical. After all, if you can‘t make ends meet on 100%, how can you make ends meet on 90% or less? In Malachi 3, God issues a serious indictment against His people. He says we have robbed Him. How have we done this? In tithes and offerings. Then He patiently instructs us to bring the whole tithe into His storehouse and offers a challenge to us. Concerning the tithe, God says, in essence, ―Prove Me. Try Me. Put Me to the test. And see — in response to your obedience — if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.‖ 12

If you are one who tithes, you know how God keeps His promise. You have proved Him and settled this issue in your heart. If you are not one who tithes, why not take God at His Word. Here‘s how: Take stock of your present financial situation, and then step out by faith. Put God to the test by tithing for six months or so. Then take stock again. You will find that God has kept His promise and provided specific, tangible blessings in your life in response to your obedience. Tithing, you see, is not God‘s way of raising money to pay His bills. Tithing is God‘s way of growing His children. Stephen Olford wrote this: ―Abraham gave tithes to God through Melchizedek, the king-priest. According to Hebrews 7, Melchizedek is a beautiful type of Christ in resurrection. Melchizedek gives Abraham bread and wine, symbols of sacrifice; and Abraham acknowledges his indebtedness to God by giving Him tithes of all his spoils. In other words, tithing is the scriptural way of saying ‗thank you‘ to God for all that He has done for us.‖ As you consider your giving and your offering to the Lord next Sunday at St. John United Church of Christ, will you say ―thank you‖ to Him and ―move up to the tithe?‖

Leader: O God, we pray for all those with mental illness and their families. In your mercy, shield them from those who would neglect, exploit and stigmatize them. You have told us repeatedly that it is Your will go guide and protect them. Help us believe and understand that this is always true.

People: For all who cannot advocate for themselves, cause Your power to awaken in us a voice that will not be silenced, a vision that will not be clouded, a determination that will not be dampened, a sense of righteousness that can only be triumphant. The rejection and frustration that we may experience is never a product of Your Holy hand. The lifting of the mantle of ignorance, fear and injustice is Your intent. The word which inspires each of us to direct our energy and creativity to bring hope and healing, acceptance and empowerment to those with mental illness and their loved ones. Amen.

Please join us in this important mission of our church. 15

Thank you to everyone who supported Girl Scout Daisy troop 3010 and Girl Scout Brownie troop 3262 with the cookie sale. Kayleigh, Averie and Abbey Newkirk. ************************************************************************* Thank you for your generous gift(s) received July through December 2010 of $400.00 to support Chicago, United, and Eden Seminaries. Thank you again for your investment in the leadership of the United Church of Christ. –Kiely Todd Roska ************************************************************************* Dear Friends of St. John, Thank you for all your cards, letters, emails, memorials and prayers all throughout these past 27 years, but especially now in the death of our daughter, sister and aunt Lucinda Kay. You have been our rock so many times, or as we say in the UCC ―God is Still Speaking‖ and you have been His voice and arms throughout. Lucinda thoroughly enjoyed her 51st birthday on Thursday the 27th celebrating (5 parties between the Nursing Home, Rehab departments and family) and enjoyed 2 chocolate sundaes from her sister‘s Culver‘s. There was no sign of illness so when they called at 6 that they wanted to take her to the hospital for concerns, I followed. There was no hope for her— double pneumonia. Her brothers, sister, and dad and I were all with her as she quietly went to sleep. The celebration of her life at St. Peter‘s in Champaign was beautiful and now we rely on memories and celebrate those. Thank you all and God Bless each one of you and your ministry. ST . JOHN UCC COUNCIL MINUT ES Present: Ulan Price, Daryl Tessmann, Lisa Ebbers, Carla Meyer, Jeanne Cross, Bruce Dykstra, Donnley Dutcher, Perry Cowan, Bill Condie, Mary Arnold, Ben Lee, Patty Weik Meeting was called to order at 6:30pm and Pastor Donnley opened with prayer. February Minutes were approved. Treasurer's Report: The financial report was discussed and reviewed. Ulan moved to accept the financial report as presented. Mary seconded. Motion carried. Air Conditioning in Chapel Hearth Presentation: On behalf of Property Management, Bruce presented an update on air conditioning for Chapel Hearth. There isn't room for ductwork in Chapel Hearth, so the air conditioning unit needs to be placed on the roof. The total cost of the project would be $16,233, which includes everything except replacement ceiling tiles. It was determined to be more feasible to do Chapel Hearth separate from the kitchen. Running ductwork from Fellowship Hall to air condition the kitchen will be figured as a separate project. The cost of air conditioning the kitchen will likely be less than $2,000, and will be completed. Ben moved to present Property Management's proposal for air conditioning the Chapel Hearth to the congregation. Ulan seconded. Motion carried. Custodial Position Update: Four candidates have been interviewed for the position of part-time custodian. The committee is in the process of deciding who to hire. Carla made a motion to give the interviewing committee the authority to hire the individual without having to bring their choice back to Council for final approval. Mary seconded. Motion carried. Part-time Organist: The Worship Ministry presented a recommendation for adjustment regarding part-time organist. It was determined that it would be best to pay the organist on a per/ service basis, considering there are five "special" services in addition to the 52 Sunday's. Bill moved to approve the change in the organist budget. Carla seconded. Motion carried. 21

Employee Handbook: Changes were presented by Staff Relations and reviewed by Council. Ulan moved to approve the changes to the Employee Handbook. Bruce seconded. Motion carried. Nominating Committee: Nominations for the various ministries were reviewed. Bill made a motion to accept the nominations for ministry positions. Daryl seconded. Motion carried. "If The Church Were Christian" Discussion, chapter 10 Meeting adjourned at 8:26pm with the Mizpah Benediction
