Modern garden square living Like other European cities, London has its grand civic spaces, but nowhere else has developed the garden square in quite the same way. They continue to be a vital part of the city’s fabric – a focus for local communities, and pleasant, green spaces for Londoners to sidestep the hectic pace of urban life. This distinctly London character and heritage flows through Lillie Square. Modern mansion blocks wrap elegantly around a contemporary garden square, and will be bordered by the Lost River Park, a new 5-acre public park for London.

TERRY FARRELL & PARTNERS MASTERPLANNING Farrells are considered to be the UK’s leading architect planners, with offices in London, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Many of Farrells’ projects have won international design awards including the masterplan award at the 2013 World Architecture Festival in Singapore and the company’s work is featured in publications worldwide. Farrells’ placemaking and planning reputation is a result of a long term commitment from conviction involving decades of research and thought leadership; from green and ecological thinking to communication skills in consultation and advocacy to context research as a fundamental placemaking principle. Clients range from community and action groups to developers, landowners, city and national governments, political leaders and mayors. Farrells have a unique history in planning, designing, co-ordinating and delivering large, highly complex and dense urban projects, which are often centred on integrated transport inter-changes and invariably involve city-centre, mixed-use accommodation. Farrells approach to masterplanning, architecture and design is to create high quality places and buildings that are future proof environmentally, economically, socially and culturally. Farrells believe that intelligent masterplanning is the most important factor in creating sustainable communities. Their projects are based on core principles of using resources effectively (including existing buildings where appropriate), enhancing biodiversity, supporting communities, creating healthy environments, minimising pollution and managing the implementation process.
Farrells was established by Sir Terry Farrell CBE and during his 40 years in practice he has completed many award-winning buildings and masterplans around the world. Throughout his career, Sir Terry Farrell has championed placemaking and the public realm and, in 2013, he was voted the individual who made the greatest contribution to London’s planning and development over the last 10 years. He is currently leading an industry wide review of architecture and the built environment at the invitation of Ed Vaizey, Architecture Minister. In London, Sir Terry is the Mayor’s Design Advisor, he advises the Department for Transport on high speed rail, he is the Chair of the Thames Gateway Local Nature Partnership and is the masterplanner for the transformation of major redevelopment areas in London.

Andy Sturgeon is one of the world’s leading landscape and garden designers whose contemporary gardens are widely admired for their timeless architectural qualities, innovative planting and sculptural characteristics.
PD+P approached their commission on Lillie Square mindful of its integration with the overall vision for Earls Court as conceived by Terry Farrell, to create a new ‘Great Estate’ for London aimed at attracting a diverse mix of people to live, work and visit. The Masterplan approach was primarily about ‘placemaking’ as opposed to the design of individual buildings, and as such, a series of linked landscaped squares of different qualities were designed throughout the site. The approach on Lillie Square was to enhance the original scheme by creating a series of contextual residences that would act as a backdrop to key landmark buildings and a dynamic entrance to the whole of the development. A vibrant and active public realm has been created on the 1–9 Lillie Road site to act as a gateway to the scheme and to the newly created Lost River Park.
A multi award-winning designer, he has won six Gold Medals and the coveted ‘Best in Show’ at the world-renowned RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London and international accolades in Singapore, Japan and South Korea. His commissions span the UK, Russia, Europe and the Middle East and he recently launched Garden Design Asia, a landscape design service tailored to meet the needs of high-end private clients in Asia. He is a published author, journalist and broadcaster and an active commentator on the international landscape and garden design scene.
