A special thank you to The Sober and Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art for hosting the Artshakes project, and allowing us to be their guinea-pigs, in their Melville house/yard. Thank you to all of the milkshake makers who took the time to visit (or not visit) us, and contribute to this project, it wouldn’t have work without you. A sincere apology to Quinten Williams and Portia Malatjie for milkshake hiccups. Also, sorry to those who are vegans and/or lactose intolerant, there are only a few options for you.
Disclaimer: Although we are delighted by how far this project has pushed the spectrum of milkshake flavours and functions (and we would encourage you to try out these recipes for yourself), we do not take any responsibility for any damage or disappointment caused by the shake. Please blend at your own discretion.

Artshakes is a project that involves the team at SmallSips hanging out with some friendly people for a few hours, making and drinking milkshakes in the sunshine. During a monthlong residency at the Sober and Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art, Skye and Karin, of SmallSips invited a bunch of nice people to come the yard and design/curate/realize a milkshake. The recipes that follow are a result of this tasty (or toxic) project.

Ruth Sacks! All Local Everything Milkshake
2014/06/22
Instructions 1. Delineate a locality that has significance to your project. The area may not be so large as to render the project excessively wasteful. 2 Make a milkshake for a predetermined number of exhibition visitors in which any new purchases, including all foodstuffs, cookware, crockery and cutlery, must have been produced/ grown/manufactured and purchased within that locality. 3. Aim towards being as ecologically-friendly as possible in all aspects of the purchasing of ingredients and preparing of the meal (eg; if you can borrow enough spoons, do not buy more; if you have 2 x cooking (/stirring) options, opt for the least damaging). 4. Keeping the preceding instruction in mind, the milkshake should be home-made wherever possible. The method of cooking and preparation for each dish should take local dishes and specialties into account. Conversation and consultation with a variety of restaurants and street vendors in the area are essential. 5. Work out the most appropriate methods of preparing the milkshake using existing equipment and supplies within that locality (eg; if using gas, how is it obtained?). Once the rules for the preparation of the drinks are set, do not make any changes or exceptions during the production and serving of the meal. 24

Matthew King! 2014/07/07 I’m afraid I can’t be physically present to make a milkshake today, and so in light of that this is what I’d like to invite you all to do: If you can make it over to the Sober & Lonely yard, please pick up a milkshake on your way over. Skye and Karin have made up a map of places nearby that you can get a milkshake from, but really, you can get one from wherever you’d like to. Either get your favourite flavour, or if you don’t feel like making a decision, get chocolate (that’s my favourite). If you are lactose intolerant, or vegan, or anything, then please feel free to interpret “milkshake” in whichever way you please. Please aim to get there at two thirty. Once you arrive start (obviously, I guess) to drink your milkshake. While you do that try your best to think about, and conjure up, the best milkshake you’ve ever had, as well as the surrounding details of that experience. This is the central gesture. From then on, you can do you what you feel is best. If you want to use those memories to start some kind of conversation that would be great. If you just want to enjoy your reverie, that’s also great. If you want to write something down and post it on this event (or even anywhere), that would also be great! For those of you (for those of us) who can’t make it to the yard, please feel free to do the same thing, just find some suitable place and time in which to do it. That’s it! I hope this all makes sense. 54

Tatenda Magaisa ft. Joanna Joachim! Variations
2014/07/08
Variations are products of a prescribed method where materials are repeated in an altered form. In the act of varying, there is a partial change in the formula, position, state, or qualities of a thing. The variant becomes a related, but distinct thing. When the prescribed process does not work or does not satisfy we try a variation based on the prescribed process. We repeat the material with alterations. We consider each altered product as individual with its own requirements and necessities. If it’s bad, try another one. If it’s good, try another one. This is an indication of experimentation, the adoption of new practices.

Euridice Kala & Nastio Mosquito! An African Milkshake
2014/07/10
EK: Where does a milkshake, you know, come from? Maybe its from a hot country. NM: Yeah, I dunno, the relationship to a milkshake always brings me to a fat country, in a sense. Fat like it’s an abundance. Abundance like milk, ice-cream, sugar, colours and all that. We do it a lot in Angola, with avocado, for example, I dunno if that makes it African. EK: Yeah, Maybe. I was thinking an African milkshake should have tomatoes. [Euridice and Nastio Laugh] Like, while I was driving, I was thinking, ‘oh man, if I was making, an African milkshake should have tomatoes and like, I dunno, a long, elongated type of, like, not fruit, but vegetable. Like, I dunno, it should be very male-like. I dunno, what do you think? NM: Well, I dunno, like, uhm-ah, like, tomatoes, even though it is a fruit, I dunno, when I think about tomatoes in a drink, or about tomato juice, it’s very refined…. Tomatoes, it reminds one of balls. EK: Yeah, indeed. Balls. Okay, balls, I think balls are important in this conversation although I just misses, I dunno what… [skype disconnects] [skpye reconnects] NM: Hello? EK: Hi, sorry, I don’t know what happened. NM: We were talking about balls, it would be a lot more African-like if you get two passion-fruit, you know, they are wrinkly and all. If you don’t have the yellow passion-fruit, there are purplish, and they do have seeds, on the inside like the tomatoes. If you look at the seeds of the passion-fruit, they can even look like sperm I suppose, I dunno know. EK: Seminal balls, that is what we are talking about. [Euridice and Nastio laugh] An African experience of milkshake making, it should have some semen of some sorts. NM: Yes, passion-fruits, it is for all reasons, starting with the name, the texture of it, what it has on the inside. Tomatoes speaks of health, something a European or Asian would do, put some tomatoes in a drink, which is a very healthy thing to do. Or someone who is desperately trying not to have prostate cancer. EK: Prostate cancer? NM: Yeah, you know, tomatoes are very good for your prostate, you don’t…. EK: No, I wouldn’t know
60
61
More of this conversation at www.smallsips.wordpress.com
NM: Exactly, it is not really a concern of yours, but tomatoes are good friends. EK: Yeah, but you know, I was also thinking about like, uhm, eggs, you know? You know like wanting to uhm… NM: Thinking of what? EK: Eggs. NM: ggs, right. Eggs, yeah yeah, for sure, we should do that. EK: The milkshake should have… NM: Eggs….. helps, gives you spunk(?) EK: There is something about the colour of tomatoes that is really interesting, it’s like, blood, you can get blood-red tomatoes. Green tomatoes are not really, you know, luscious, and yeah… So probably if there should be tomatoes instead of passion fruit, which I’m still like, you know… NM: Tomatoes instead of what? EK: Passion-fruit NM: Okay EK: I don’t know, Like what do you think… Maybe we put both. NM: I told you what I think already, but I have nothing against tomatoes, why not. EK: yeah, I dunno, I dunno. I think tomatoes, passion fruit, or passion fruit and some really interesting vegetable, and uhm. What was the last ingredient you added onto this milkshake? NM: uhhh, I dunno, if you are using a vegetable… EK: Eggs NM: with passion-fruit I think there is a fresh vegetable I think tastes good in drinks, at least for me, which is cucumber. EK: Yes NM: Its phallic EK: exactly NK: as you are going for something [Nastio and Euridice laugh], very, I don’t know, but lets keep it simple and say phallic, ballsy. EK: its quite ballsy, I think if we added cucumber, tomatoes, or passion-fruit, or both… Cucumber is also really nice because it is quite cold, cool, like it cools everything off. NM: Exactly, it work specifically well with the passion-fruit, but sometimes a bit acid, you know, it’s kind of watery. But to put in a milkshake, to put in an African Milkshake, it is not one without condensed milk. EK: why do you , lets talk about what you mean about condensed milk? NM: You don’t know what it is?
