The Pledge I pledge to be true to myself and what I believe in. To be who I am, not who someone

else thinks I should be. I’ll hold tight to the things I’m all about – like friends, and dancing

And I’ll stay away from yawa things I know I’m good without – like backstabbing, and smoking.

Because knowing what’s my thing and what’s not my thing helps make me who I am.

I will make choices that are true to me. I pledge to find my SKY.

SKY: So tell us, did you have a crush in high school? MzVee: Yeah, I actually had more than that. I had my first boyfriend in Senior High. Don’t know if it was love though, just secondary school things—it was so confusing *laughs*. SKY: What were the biggest pressures you had to deal with as a teenager? MzVee: Wanting to fit in. I always knew I was weird. People who are close to me know that too. My preferences differ from those of others. I ordinarily would not go the way everybody else would go. It was something I really struggled with in school. In those moments, people would look at me funny which was pretty embarrassing. So I tried to fit in that crowd. I wanted to be accepted. In my final year in Senior High though I realized I just needed to be myself and it paid off. SKY: You have a very great fashion sense, how do you do it? MzVee: I have a stylist who puts my outfits together, but she knows my style which is all mine. SKY: What one thing will you tell your teenage self if you had the chance? MzVee: l would tell her she should be proud and confident of who she is and where she is coming from – from day one. SKY: What ës the difference between how you choose your f riends now and how you used to in the past? MzVee: Eeeerrrmm, actually I am not much of a “friends” person. Of course, I have my

11

JUly 2017

family and some people I can talk to and confide in. I am who I am, and though I held up ok back then, I’ve got more comfortable in my skin as I’ve got older. My team is all made up of crazy cool people and all our differences come together to create beautiful things. SKY: Who is that person you look up to? MzVee: Efya. She is hardworking, beautiful. I mean she is just amazing in every single way. Her work ethic is something else. She puts so much into her music it’s really inspiring. I look to do more of that in my music as well. SKY: Were your parents always okay with your switch to full-time music? MzVee: No, it took some time, especially with Dad. He had lots of misconceptions about the industry. I had to convince him it was safe; that his baby girl was in good hands. *laughs* SKY: Tell us, whatís your thing? MzVee: Being weird is my thing. To me there is nothing like abnormal. What is abnormal here is very normal and celebrated at another place. SKY: Aaaw cool! So whatís not your thing? MzVee: The funny thing is because I sing, everyone expects me to be a party girl. But that’s not me. My way of having fun is more relaxed – maybe an outing every now and then. For me, having fun and feeling well are the same – so I’m not one for too many late nights. I eat well, sleep well and steer clear of unhealthy things. Personally I don’t like the idea of nasty or harmful chemicals in my body – definitely not my thing!

All a girl wants is gorgeous, smooth skin that lights up beautifully. That is why we get annoyed on sighting a pimple on our precious faces. But the facial skin is sensitive; if you take good care of it, it will take good care of you. Why don’t we find out how we can do that? KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE Dry or oily? Sensitive or just normal? - Just like you love things suited to you, your skin deserves products suited for it. For instance if you have oily skin, you’d probably want to stay away from oil-based creams. Different facial products are made for different skin types. Don’t forget that. WATER UP Water is a natural glower. Use it both internally and externally-drink and wash. Drinking eight to twelve glasses daily is enough to help keep your skin fresh and young. Wash your face with some warm or cold water daily. The hydration would flush all the icky stuff out. DO SOME EXERCISES So you may not know this but exercising works magic for your skin too. It increases your blood flow which nourishes your skin cells, keeping them vital! So take a walk or two as frequent as you can. FRUITIFY & VEGEFY If fruits and veggies are your thing, you’re on the highway to gorgeous skin. A healthy diet loaded with fruits and vegetables will leave your skin radiant. Fruits and veggies like watermelons, nuts, cucumbers, cabbages and carrots are loaded with Vitamin A and antioxidants that help in the formation of healthy skin cells. GO NATURAL The skin usually reacts beautifully to natural and organic products. They just gel. Choose shea butter over Dr. Kill Pimples Fast Action *rolling my eyes*. Try an avocado mask, use eggs etc. As much as possible, avoid chemical solutions that add to your facial troubles. So go ahead, give your face some tender loving care have yourself some beautiful skin. Don’t forget to turn up that glow with a smile. Your beautiful smile will outshine any form of acne, pimple or facial discoloration. Put a smile on, you are body beautiful.

Hi SKY Sistas, So I am that kind of girl that volu nteers a lot, takes initiatives and likes to speak up on issues etc. Most of my teachers usually take a liking to me naturally. Back in JHS, my mates said I was a teacher’s pet and “postkaya” and did all this intentionally to make others look bad. This is totally untrue but it mea ns I don’t have any real friends. I have a few weeks to enter into my senior high school and I plan to be more laid back and less part icipatory in order to make othe rs like me. The thought of this mak es me sad and I hate pretending, but the idea of having friends is exciting. Am I doing the right thing? Lonely girl Hey girl, I get you, life without friends wou ld totally suck. But do you know what is worse? There are others like you and you’ll find them and build true friendships. Allow your self to meet new people and show them the real you. The world is such a big place sis, trust me. SHS is going to expose you to many different people! And ther e’s always going to be someone who is the right fit for you so don’ t worry about hiding who you really are inside. Someone is goin g to come along and you guys would build a great friendship! Yours always, SKY Sista
