YVR is three months away from opening Canada’s first Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE)—a facility designed to minimize noise in surrounding communities from aircraft engine run-ups. Crews have been busy all summer doing groundwork for the GRE, demolishing old buildings, removing old concrete, relocating utilities and laying down the foundation for a new apron. The site’s location near YVR’s first terminal building and the heart of the airport’s south-side operations provided a handful of challenges. Crews had to work around and reroute old buried utilities in the ground, including power, communications, sanitary, storm, gas and water mains, which were built up on the site over the past 80 years. And to minimize impacts to operations, customers and nearby business partners, a lot of the work has taken place at night or during off-peak hours. Starting this month, the materials and steel required for the actual structure will

Twenty years of the airport community coming together in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and local children’s charities was celebrated at this year’s YVR Golf for Kids tournament. Since 1991, the annual YVR Golf for Kids event has contributed more than $3 million to help children and families in British Columbia. This popular golf tournament brings together a close network of airport businesses and is supported by title sponsor Vancouver Airport Authority as well as Concord Pacific and Marquise Group as gold and bronze sponsors and The Vancouver Sun. Many airlines and airport businesses generously donate prizing for the gala auction and airport employees contribute hundreds of volunteer hours. In addition to the title sponsorship, Larry Berg, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, donated a further $20,000 in celebration of the milestone anniversary to benefit local children’s charities.

The event took place at the newly named QGolf Club (previously called Quilchena Golf and Country Club) on September 15 with 144 golfers taking to the fairways. The evening gala dinner and auction at the River Rock Casino and Resort was attended by 400 people with emcee Shanel Pratap from Global News and auctioneer Howard Blank of Great Canadian Casinos. The popular silent and live auctions raised $260,000 from generous bids on unique items such as a Canuck jersey signed by the Stanley Cup final hockey team, a Langara Fishing Lodge vacation package, a full membership to QGolf Club, numerous hotel packages, and a record number of airline tickets. Other prizes were donated by Aldeasa Duty Free, Glentel, PCL, and many others. As always, the Vancouver Canucks organization played a significant role in the festivities. With the exhilarating first day of school a distant memory for most kids, it was back to school excitement all over again late last month for 250 students who took part in the first week of Vancouver Airport Authority’s school tour program, The Future Lands Here. Now in its third year, more than 2,200 Grade Five students will participate in the tour program during the next two months to get a personalized look at the airport, its operations and its people. The Future Lands Here program is led by three energetic tour guides—Annalisa, Marcus and Wyanne—from the co-op program at SFU’s School of Communication. Assisted by YVR’s friendly volunteer Green Coats and their collective bank of airport knowledge, the tour guides help students identify interesting and often unknown aspects of YVR, all the while honing their own presentation and communications skills. Each tour starts when students are met at the Canada Line Templeton Station. From there, a short ride on the Canada Line is followed by a guided walk through the terminal building to learn about airport procedures that the students may use when travelling with their families. In addition, students learn about YVR’s geography and natural surroundings, its connections to First Nations’ culture and history and the many sustainable initiatives at the airport. Practical, informative, interactive activities are conducted with the students as well as a visit to the Public Observation Area. The Future Lands Here tour program runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until November 24 and is now fully registered. For information about The Future Lands Here, visit yvrconnections.com. Want to get involved? The Airport Authority is looking for guest speakers to help share the YVR story; if you are interested in volunteering an hour out of your day to tell the students about your role at YVR, email School_Program@ yvr.ca for more information.

Golf for Kids from pg 1 Maxim Lapierre and Cory Schneider were available for photos for a small donation to the charity. The real stars of the events are always the children, families and the staff from Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Their stories and expressions of appreciation serve as a reminder of why YVR Golf for Kids began. In the mid-1980s, a friendly golf challenge started between various YVR law enforcement officers. In 1991, two members of Canada Customs, Brian and Audrey Flagel lost their daughter Elise to cancer. In response, the airport community rallied together and changed the law enforcement tournament into a golf challenge and auction, with the proceeds to be donated to the Elise Flagel Foundation. Thus began YVR Golf for Kids Tournament. To learn more about YVR Golf for Kids and how you can get involved, visit yvrgolfforkids.com.

National Research Council celebrates 60 years of aerospace research This year, the National Research Council (NRC) labs are celebrating 60 years of service to the Canadian aerospace industry. NRC labs created the crash position indicator, helped develop the Twin Otter aircraft, the mechanical arm used on the Space Shuttle (Canadarm), and managed the original Canadian Astronaut Program Launched in 1951 as the National Aeronautical Establishment (NAE), NRC’s aerospace labs were originally housed within the Division of Mechanical Engineering. In its first year, the NAE worked with de Havilland to develop the Otter aircraft, which played an important role in opening Canada’s north. NAE researchers later assisted in the development of the Twin Otter and other aircraft. Thanks in part to NRC research, Canada ranks among the world’s top five aerospace nations with revenues of nearly $23-billion per year. More than 400 aerospace companies from coast to coast provide 82,000 high-quality jobs and serve a variety of niche markets such as regional jets, commuter aircraft, civilian helicopters, landing gear, flight simulators, and space robotics and imaging. Following are some examples of NRC aerospace achievements over the past 60 years. Aerodynamics Throughout its history, the Aerodynamics Laboratory has given aerospace manufacturers the means to better design, predict and optimize the performance of their products. NRC constructed its first wind tunnel in 1930 and has supported the development of the Canadian aviation industry ever since. The Lab has also applied its expertise to applications related to surface vehicles, flexible struc-

Flight research NRC’s Flight Research Section was created in 1946, joining the NAE in 1951, and was later renamed the Flight Research Laboratory. From the start, the lab’s vision extended beyond research about flight to include research experimentation in flight. With a small fleet of test aircraft, NRC researchers have conducted experiments to advance aircraft and helicopter design, improve cockpit systems, enhance flight safety, and improve the understanding of weather, cloud physics and global climate change. In addition: Gas turbine lab NRC had been involved in gas turbine engine research for many years before the 2005 launch of its own Gas Turbine

Laboratory (GTL). This laboratory has unique facilities and expertise to help industry develop and evaluate the performance of gas turbine engines and components in compliance with increasingly stringent environmental, safety and operational requirements. Aerospace manufacturing technology NRC’s Aerospace Manufacture Technology Centre (AMTC) opened in 2004 on the Université de Montréal campus. Its mission is to help Canadian aerospace manufacturers and their suppliers evaluate, demonstrate and implement new manufacturing technologies. The AMTC is active in four technology areas: forming and joining of composites; metallic products; automation, robotics and intelligent manufacturing systems; and material removal (focusing mainly on hard alloys and composites). As the Institute – NRC Aerospace – moves into its seventh decade, it will continue contributing its expertise and facilities to the development and adoption of leaner, greener, safer and more efficient technologies for the industry. NRC Aerospace will work with other NRC research programs as well as university and industry partners on biofuels, lighter and stronger materials and healthier aircraft cabin environments, helping Canada maintain its position in the global aerospace economy.

New YVR paging system launched Listen up, passengers. YVR has launched an innovative Automated Airline Gate and Baggage multilingual announcement system that will make it easer for you to do just that. Starting this month, airline agents will now be able to press a touch screen system at the assigned gate or baggage locations and broadcast their airline brand specific pre-recorded announcements in both official languages (English and French). In addition, airlines can choose any number of six other top languages used at YVR, including: Cantonese, Punjabi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Spanish languages identified with assistance of Tourism BC and Language Line statistics, and consistent with the airport’s existing signage way-finding programs. The new automated announcement system utilizes state-of-the-art technology and includes new amplifiers and network controllers located in 23 rooms throughout the airport, dedicated network cabling and upgraded speaker capabilities for enhanced clarity, intelligibility and performance for airlines and passengers alike. As part of this upgrade, airline flight

information is pulled from the scheduling database and automatically populates the airline and flight number/destination into the announcement for the airline at the assigned gate. The messages for broadcast are automatically populated at each gate prior to the scheduled departure of a flight and are available for selection and broadcast when the agent is ready at the gate. System capabilities include the ability for airlines to broadcast a message when a gate change has occurred to the old gate and provide pre-recorded announcements for the entire boarding process, baggage claim announcements and other scenarios. Airline users have the ability to select the desired broadcast area including the local gate, neighbouring gates or even pier-wide, when appropriate. Vancouver Airport Authority worked collaboratively with its airline partners to review individual airline scripts and paging content to ensure that the final harmonized script represents key elements of all airline paging. The South Terminal Building will also be upgraded with new microphones and amplifiers in the very near future.

Did you know YVR is one of the world’s most accessible airports for passengers with disabilities? The airport has been outfitted with a visual paging system, visual fire alarms, Braille lettering in elevators and washrooms, tactile maps of the terminal area, innovative Automated Airline Gate and Baggage multilingual announcement system and more TTY (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) pay phones than in any other airport terminal.

The Honourable Ed Fast, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, recently announced an expansion of the bilateral air transport agreement between Canada and Japan. The announcement, which was made during the Minister’s visit to Japan to strengthen Canada’s trade and investment ties with Asia, provides more possibilities for air services between the two countries. “This expanded agreement will help deepen Canada’s important trade and investment relationship with Japan—the world’s fourth-largest economy,” said Minister Fast. “Our government is committed to facilitating the movement of goods, services and people to help Canadian businesses expand, compete and succeed in priority markets around the world.” The expanded arrangements include greater access for Canadian airlines to Tokyo’s Narita Airport and added flexibility for airline routings. The agreement includes additional rights for services between Canada and Japan through third countries, which will support air services between the two nations. The expanded agreement is also expected to lead to additional benefits for

The French airplane, AKOYA, is an amphibious aircraft designed to also land on snow. LISA Airplanes, a young French company that creates, manufactures and sells high-end airplanes and associated services, has developed the AKOYA, a two-seater airplane with a unique design and a wealth of features that will delight those who love to travel and explore. Featuring patented Multi-Access technology, the AKOYA can take off and land as easily on water or snow as on the ground. In addition, pivoting wings allow it to be stored or transported with ease. This technical feat is made possible by the development of Seafoils, a unique innovation in the world of aviation. Located under the fuselage, these hydrofoils are connected to a retractable landing gear equipped with skis and pivoting wings. This abundance of new features enables the AKOYA to reach unprecedented seaplane performance levels. With just 70 litres of unleaded gasoline, the AKOYA can fly more than 1,100 kilometres at a speed above 210 kilometres per hour.

Entirely designed in composite materials and powered by a 100-horsepower Rotax engine, the AKOYA can take off and land over less than 200 metres. Private land, airfield, airport, lake, river, sea or snowcovered runway: the possibilities are such that users can land as close as possible to their destination, thus considerably reducing overall travel time. After finalizing the first prototype test trials in 2009 and completing industrialization, LISA Airplanes is currently carrying out flight tests on its pre-series airplane on runways in France. LISA Airplanes anticipates receiving American LSA (Light Sport Aircraft) certification in mid 2012, followed by immediate delivery to first customers. Already supported by investors including a French investment fund, LISA Airplanes seeks to boost its business development on a global scale.

Spitfires at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed By Mike Tate The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) in England features historic motor racing and incredible vehicles, but is also renowned for its amazing air displays that have included a huge range of aircraft. Held over a three-day period in late June, the aircraft displayed and flown ranged from commercial and contemporary to military and historic. This year, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the most lauded and iconic fighter aircraft of World War II, the Supermarine Spitfire, Goodwood assembled 14 Spitfires as well as the prototype re-creation. It must have been an alarming and disturbing call to arms for a crew member of a German Dornier DO 17 or a Messerschmitt Mf110 to hear the words, “Achtung Spitfire!” shouted out during WW2. While some pilots of Mustang P 51s, Vaught F4U Corsairs and Hawker Hurricanes might argue which was a better aircraft, all would have to agree that the Spitfire, designed by aeronautical engineer Reginald Mitchell, was unique, effective and successful. To see one of these fine aircraft is rare and to see one in flight is amazing, but to see a whole squadron in the skies over Goodwood, along with the prototype K5054, which first took to the skies in early March 1936 piloted by Chief Test Pilot Captain ‘Mutt’ Summers in early March 1936, was quite breathtaking. At this year’s event, the Spitfire squadron took off in close formation from what was once the World War II Airfield of Westhampnett on the Goodwood Estate This airfield of Westhampnett on the Goodwood Estate was variously the home of RAF Squadrons 43, 129, 145, 602 and 610 during the war, and home to both Supermarine Spitfires and Hawker

I think my heart skipped a beat as I heard multiple Rolls Royce Merlin engines open up to a full throttle roar to haul the aircraft into the skies in pairs. Then to my utter amazement the Spitfires formed up on a distant four-engined aircraft, which turned out to be no less than one of the few Avro Lancaster Heavy Bombers still flying in the world today. They escorted her on several circuits of the aerodrome—the little fighters were once again respectfully and lovingly taking care of their big brother and welcoming him home again. More than 20,000 Supermarine Spitfires, of one iteration or another, were manufactured from 1936 until 1949 at Supermarine’s West Bromwich. Test Pilot Jeffery Quill was once quoted as saying: “The neck-and-neck technical race with the enemy gave rise to an immense drive for

Airport Projects The Canadian ePassport, the latest travel document technology the electronic chip contains the passport holder’s photo. It also contains a countryspecific signature that proves the passport was issued by the Government of Canada. The information stored on the chip is identical to the information that is visible to the naked eye on page two of the passport, as well as the information repeated in the

Machine-readable zone on Canada’s ePassport.

The chip is an extra security feature that will increase the Canadian passport’s current security features, which include holographic images and a hidden photo of the bearer that can only be viewed under ultraviolet light. The addition of the electronic chip represents the next generation of machinereadable travel documents. Unlike the traditional machine-readable zone, which will still be found on the ePassport,

An ePassport being read by a scanner. machine-readable zone. The visible photo must match the photo stored on the chip, as well as the “ghost” photo printed in ultraviolet ink.

When the passport holder’s information and the Government of Canada’s unique signature is originally stored on the chip, the chip is electronically locked. This means that even if someone were able to tamper with the data on the chip, the chip would indicate that the lock had been broken and the fraud would be detected. The chip in the Canadian ePassport will be a proximity contactless chip that must be held within 10 centimetres of the reader in order to be read. Moreover, the data on the chip cannot be accessed unless the machine-readable zone on page two has first been read, which means that the passport book must be open. It is therefore extremely unlikely that the data stored on the chip could be read without the knowledge of the passport holder. Border authorities equipped with ePassport readers will insert the traveller’s ePassport into a scanner, which will read the machine-readable zone, thereby opening the chip so that it can be read as well. The machine also checks other security features, such as the country’s signature. Border authorities who are not equipped with ePassport readers will continue to examine travellers’ passports as they do now. Some 95 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and France, have been using ePassports for several years now with no reported chip failures. Through a pilot project that began in January 2009, Passport Canada has already issued more than 40,000 diplomatic and special passports containing the chip, and no difficulties have been reported. In the unlikely event that the chip cannot be read, the passport will still be valid. It will still contain all the security features of the current non-electronic Canadian passport. Public ePassport readers will be installed in Passport Canada’s 34 offices. This will allow passport holders to access the information stored on their chip to make sure it is accurate, should they wish to do so.

World’s airlines and Asian airports report record growth

In the past decade, Beijing Capital International Airport has rapidly ascended in rankings of the world’s busiest airports. The world’s airlines have scheduled five per cent more capacity on three per cent more flights for the fifth month running, according to the latest statistics from global aviation intelligence company OAG. The OAG FACTS (Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics) report for October reveals that 87,176 more scheduled flights will operate this month, offering 16.6-million more seats, continuing a steady upward trend for the global airline industry compared with 2010. The figures equate to 2.65-million flights for October with a total capacity of 337.3-million seats. “It is unusual to see such consistent growth in scheduled flights and capacity,” said Peter von Moltke, chief executive officer, UBM Aviation, the parent company of OAG. “While profit forecasts for the industry remain weak, these figures indicate that airlines remain confident that passenger demand will continue to buck the gloomy economic outlook.” The balance between a higher overall increase in capacity (five per cent) compared to frequency (three per cent) reflects the growing number of carriers replacing older aircraft with larger, next-

generation aircraft that can carry more passengers. This month’s average seat per flight figure is 127 compared to 125 in October 2010. Growth for airlines in Asia Pacific continued to outperform other regions with 11 per cent more scheduled flights and 9 per cent more capacity to and from its airports. While the top three airport rankings by capacity have not changed from 2010 (Atlanta, U.S.; Beijing, China; London Heathrow, England), Japan’s Tokyo Haneda has overtaken Chicago O’Hare as the fourth largest hub airport in the world, supported by its Terminal 3 operations, which opened one year ago this month. The world’s busiest airport, Atlanta International, showed a three per cent decline in scheduled flights and one per cent decline in seat capacity. However, Beijing Capital International Airport continued to show rapid growth, with a five per cent increase for flights and seats, compared with the same month last year. Beijing Capital has also pulled away from London Heathrow, with October figures showing the gap between the two airports has widened from just 2,739 seats in 2010 to 451,573 seats.

Last month, SkyTalk published this photo and asked for readers to share the background story. Caro Clark, a former Air Canada employee who now works at the Air Canada operations centre for Aeroplan, provided the information. Clark owns three ex-racehorses from Hastings Park. The horses are boarded in a barn at the Sea Island Equestrian Centre on YVR Northlands, which is where the picture was taken. The barn is managed by Charlie and Sharon Bordeleau, who originally owned it before selling it to YVR, from whom it

is now leased. Bordeleau’s great-grandfather originally owned and lived on the farm in 1876. Clark has been boarding horses at the barn for close to 25 years and has seen many changes on Sea Island over the years. Currently, there are 20 horses boarded at the Sea Island equestrian facility. The three geldings pictured above are Blue Jeans Man (aka Denim), Ranger Gord (aka Gord, who belongs to Clark) and Sonic Boom (aka Boomer). The horses appear to co-exist quite comfortably with the aircraft on Sea Island.

Pan Am worldwide reunion to British Airways visit only surviving division raises its wine bar This month, a much anticipated Worldwide Family Reunion of former Pan Am employees will be held in Miami, Florida. Former employees, friends and family, together with aviation aficionados from all over the globe and every division of Pan Am, are expected to attend the reunion being held in the Dinner Key/Coconut Grove area of Miami from October 20-23. Attendees will be celebrating the Centennial of Aviation in Miami as they honour the enormous part Pan Am played in shaping aviation history, while also marking 20 years since the close of one of the most iconic pioneering companies in the U.S. Interest in Pan Am is at an all-time high. Along with the noteworthy rise and continued success of the former airline’s only remaining division, Pan Am International Flight Academy, there is the ABC network television series Pan Am, which began airing last month and the musical Catch Me If You Can now running on Broadway. Catch Me If You Can is based on the life of Frank

Major Canadian airlines welcome new Federal Tourism Strategy The president of the National Airlines Council (NACC), which represents Canada’s four largest airlines—Air Canada, Air Transat, Jazz and WestJet— has expressed support for the Canadian Government’s new Federal Tourism Strategy. The tourism strategy emphasizes the need for coordinated and integrated travel and tourism policy-making by all relevant departments and agencies. Its objective is to implement a whole-of-government approach that will enhance the federal government’s role as an effective partner with industry and other levels of government in support of an internationally competitive tourism sector. “I was pleased to note that the Federal Tourism Strategy recognizes the importance of tourism to the national economy,” said NACC president George Petsikas. “When the tourism industry succeeds, we all succeed.” The new tourism strategy is designed to help coordinate the government’s tourism-related efforts by, for instance, fostering an open and cooperative partnership with tourism industry members and bringing policies and programs into greater alignment across departments and agencies. “We look forward to playing an active role in this new spirit of openness and

government-industry cooperation, and to working with our tourism, hospitality and airport industry partners within the National Travel and Tourism Roundtable to address continuing challenges, including global cost-competitiveness of Canada’s commercial aviation system,” said Petsikas. In 2010, tourism accounted for approximately two per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product and $73-billion in revenues and directly employed nearly 600,000 people in all regions of Canada. A link to the strategy is posted on the NACC website at airlinecouncil.ca.

Pan Am pilot. The reunion will include a visit to the only surviving division of the airline, the Pan Am International Flight Academy campus at the Miami International Airport, and its memorabilia store. The Pan Am store is staffed by original Pan Am employees all of whom possess a wealth of knowledge about the airline, and features a combination of original items, reproductions and new products adorned with the airline’s logo that are difficult to find anywhere else. Other reunion events include a Hangar Party, to be held in the historic Coast Guard Hangar on the shores of Biscayne Bay in Dinner Key, which the original Pan Am Clippers once called home during the pioneering days of aviation, as well as tours of the special exhibit “Aviation in Miami: The First 100 Years” at HistoryMiami in downtown Miami.

Grand Siècle (Great Century) Champagne is produced in the French region of Champagne, the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. British Airways has added some extra sparkle to its wine lists seeking out the world’s most prestigious wines to create an in-flight cellar of which any Michelin-star restaurant would be proud. The airline has made a substantial investment in its onboard Champagne and wines in order to offer customers new premium vintages. The first in the series is Grand Siècle by Laurent-Perrier, the jewel in the LaurentPerrier Champagne crown. The sleek bottle that is usually only found in the world’s most prestigious hotels, bars and top retail outlets, is now available in the airline’s First class cabin for the next year. British Airways will also be announcing a new Champagne feature for Club World this month.

Wines are being selected to match dishes on the menu, and some wines will fly only on a particular route to ensure they are tailored to the customer demographic, destination and time of day. “It’s always important that the wines we serve reflect the style, sophistication and quality of the onboard experience, and with this investment we have no doubt that British Airways will raise the bar for wines in the sky,” said Frank van der Post, British Airways’ managing director, brands and customer experience. British Airways was recently awarded Best Red Win for its Argento Malbec in World Traveller cabins in the Skyscanner flight search engine wine awards. Last year, British Airways purchased 10.6-million bottles of wine.

Bucket list of geographical wonders The world is full of stunning, inspirational forms of nature that range from towering waterfalls, spectacular Northern Lights and gigantic rainforests to vast underwater kingdoms and huge mountain ranges. If you are just getting started on a travel bucket list or even if you already have one, consider some of the following geographic wonders.

Ayers Rock, Australia Most people know it as Ayers Rock or The Rock, but its sacred name according to the Aboriginal people is Uluru. This sandstone outcrop southwest of Alice Springs lies in the Australian Outback and is famous not only for its breathtaking appearance, but also its springs, water holds, rock caves and ancient paintings. Ayres Rock is listed twice as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and seems to change colour by day or season.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia The world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands that stretch for more than 2,600-kilometres on the northeastern coast of Australia. It is home to an enormous cast of biological diversity of both plants and animals, and although it is an environmental treasure, the Great Barrier Reef is also perfect for adventurous travellers to scuba dive and snorkel.

Paricutin Volcano, Mexico In 1943, a farmer’s cornfield 321 kilometres west of Mexico City opened up and erupted. Lava flowed from the volcano with little interruption until 1952, covering two villages but causing no casualties. Many travellers have climbed to the top of the volcano, which towers at more than threekilometres high and includes a church, the remains which are visible in the solidified lava.

Mount Everest, Tibet Mount Everest is easily the most renowned mountain on earth, standing at 8,848-metres high, not including snow covering, and it reportedly grows by 5-millimetres every year. Its summit ridge marks the border between China and Nepal. Gunung Mulu National Park, Borneo Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park in Borneo is celebrated for its caves and karst formations, all within a mountain rainforest setting. The park contains one of the most extensive cave systems in the world, which includes 200-metre indoor waterfalls, rock pinnacles, cliffs and gorges with Mount Mulu is its highest point. At night, millions of bats descend from the caves all at once, creating a jaw-dropping atmosphere.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina/Brazil border Iguazu Falls stretches along a three-kilometre rim that straddles Argentina and Brazil. Each side has its claim to fame: Argentina’s offers varied close-up views, and Brazil’s view provides stunning panoramic vistas.

Aurora Borealis, Northern Hemisphere Sure, it’s not technically a landmass, and it doesn’t exactly exist in one place, but it’s certainly a natural wonder worth appreciating first hand. The Northern Lights show up as a beautiful light phenomenon in places like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Alaska and Canada. The lights dance across the sky from September to October and from March to April, and their showing is different each time.

Amazon Rainforest, South America Size-wise, the Amazon Rainforest rivals that of Western Europe, which speaks not only for its physical mass but its colossal reputation. More than 6,280-kilometres long, the Amazon River is the lifeblood of the Amazon Rainforest and the two coexist in nine South American countries. Grand Canyon, U.S. This gigantic canyon has been carved out by the Colorado River for millions of years. It rolls through the desert 446-kilometres long and 29-kilometres wide and nearly 2-kilometres deep. Mazatlan delicacy earns a Guinness Free software World Record Travel Talk

makes Wi-Fi safe for travellers

Last month, Mazatlan’s hoteliers joined forces with the local shrimp industry to promote the Mexican region’s culinary specialty. An effort by chefs at Mazatlan’s Hotel Playa to create the world’s largest shrimp cocktail won the city a place in the Guinness World Records. “Once all the shrimp had been added to the cocktail glass, all the dipping sauce had been mixed in, and the glass rim lined meticulously with more shrimp, each the size of a computer mouse, the industrial scales came to a rest at an incredible 538.5-kilograms,” said Mike Janela Guinness World Records adjudicator. Thousands of spectators shared the cocktail at Mazatlan’s International Center, which was served from a glass that boasted a diameter of 1.34-metres, a height of 1.9-metres and took four months to manufacture. Enjoy your next vacation in Mazatlan. Fly direct from YVR with Sunwing Airlines or WestJet. Hotel Playa Mazatlan chefs prepare the world’s largest shrimp cocktail. Travellers roaming the globe and accessing those handy free Wi-Fi hotspots that are being increasingly targeted by hackers, now have a new no-cost option to protect their personal data and communications, thanks to a California Internet security company. Virtual World Computing is introducing a new layer to its cloud-based flagship Cocoon security software that automatically encrypts those hotspot communications. While logged into Cocoon, the user’s online activities are routed through what engineers describe as a “secure tunnel” to a safe server that blocks would-be thieves. The free software is available at getcocoon.com. “Travel troubles used to mean flight delays, hotel reservation problems, lost luggage or maybe a stolen laptop, but now, we must worry about data being stolen while the computer sits right in front of us,” said Jeff Bermant, CEO and co-founder of Virtual World Computing. “Few travellers realize how easy it is for criminals to hack into their computers while on open Wi-Fi networks.” Bermant, who helped launch Virtual World Computing after his own experience with a security breach, also warns that even if a hotspot is password-protected, it does not automatically mean it is secure. Free hotspots have become famously easy pickings for hackers setting up fake free Wi-Fi hotspots that look like the real thing (aka an Evil Twin). When an unsuspecting user logs on, what they are connecting to isn’t a real hotspot; it’s the hacker’s laptop. Once that happens, the hacker can use free software from the internet— such as Firesheep, WiFi Pineapple and WiFi Robin—to hijack much of the information sent to and from the victim’s laptop including personal information, usernames and passwords and confidential business documents. YVR provides free, safe and secure access to Wi-Fi throughout the terminal. Log on next time you’re at the airport.

PW300 Turbofan marks 20th service anniversary Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PW300 turbofan engine celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The inaugural aircraft for the engine was the British Aerospace 125-1000 (later renamed the Hawker 1000). The first flight with the PW305 engine took place on June 16, 1990, followed by the Learjet 60, which took its first flight powered by the PW305A in June 1991. The roster of airframe original equipment manufacturers who have selected the PW300 includes British Aerospace, Bombardier, Hawker Beechcraft, Gulfstream, Fairchild Dornier, Dassault, Cessna and The Spaceship Company (Virgin). Most recently, Dassault selected an enhanced PW308C engine for the Falcon 2000S, and Bombardier selected the PW307B engine for the Learjet 85. There are 3,500 PW300 turbofan engines produced in nine models, with more than nine-million hours of accumulated flight time.

America fleet by 2030. A majority of this increased growth in the single-aisle category is related to traffic travelling to and from economically dynamic regions in Central and South America. New single-aisle airplanes, such as the Next-Generation 737 and the recently launched 737 MAX, offer significant advantages in improved capabilities, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, as well as enhanced environmental performance. Boeing also forecasts that long-haul international traffic will continue to grow at an average annual rate of approximately 4.5 per cent. This growth is expected to result in demand for an additional 1,180 new fuel-efficient, twin-aisle airplanes such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Large airplanes—747-size and larger— will not see significant demand in North America, with only about 50 airplanes, or one per cent of the total investment.

Qantas and Airbus have finalized a contract for 110 A320 Family aircraft, to help with the airline’s fleet renewal and expansion plans in the coming years. The order for 78 A320neo and 32 A320s is the largest single order for aircraft in Australian aviation history. The new aircraft will be deployed across the Qantas Group on short- to medium-haul domestic and international operations and underpin the airline’s commitment to build a fleet with the most fuel

Boeing forecasts that air carriers in North America will take delivery of 7,530 new airplanes over the next 20 years at a market value of $760-billion. Taking retirements of airplanes into account, the North America fleet will grow from 6,610 airplanes today to about 9,330 airplanes by 2030. “The North American commercial aviation market improved for a second consecutive year with passenger traffic growth at a modest three per cent,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, who released Boeing’s 2011 North America market outlook in Montreal earlier this month. “The region’s airline industry is poised for long-term, moderate growth. Airlines are expected to continue focusing on capacity discipline and improving financial performance.” Boeing forecasts single-aisle airplanes will grow to 73 per cent of the total North

efficient aircraft on the market. The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family to enter service in 2015. It incorporates latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 per cent in fuel and CO2 emission savings.

Minister Fast is first federal cabinet minister to fly non-stop Vancouver-Guangzhou Route

Airbus has received 1,245 A320neo orders and commitments since its launch just 10 months ago, in December 2010.

Minister Fast departs on a trade visit from YVR to China to drive Canada’s success in this key priority market. The Honourable Ed Fast, Minster of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, is the first federal cabinet minister to travel on a trade mission to China flying on China Southern Airlines’ new direct flight from YVR to Guangzhou, China. The China Southern direct service Vancouver-Guangzhou began in June 2011. The Guangzhou Airport is located in Guangdong province, one of China’s— and the world’s—fastest-growing regions.

Guangdong’s foreign trade accounts for more than one quarter of China’s overall foreign trade. Guangdong also has the country’s highest provincial per capita gross domestic product. While in China, Minister Fast will visit Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing and Qingdao, promoting Canadian capabilities in target sectors such as aerospace, financial and engineering services, high-value-added manufacturing, agrifood, lumber and energy.

Money Matters

The Warren Buffett investment strategy By Peter Kutney

It would be rare to find an investor who has not heard of Warren Buffett. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, invests in other businesses that have a strong competitive advantage and show above-average returns. Buffett has been extremely successful in his endeavours and Berkshire shareholders have enjoyed exceptional returns on their investments. Lately, with the market down this year, he has been buying. He is well known as a contrarian investor, who eschews equities when the market is expensive and is keen to buy during panics and recessions—when most other investors are selling. So how has Buffett done this? One of the keys to his success is to divide the business world into two categories: commodity business and consumer monopoly. Buffett avoids the commodity business where price is the single most important factor in the customer’s buying decision. Commodity businesses are often found in industries such as textiles, steel, airlines, energy, lumber and construction. These businesses are characterized by low profit margins, low returns on equity, intense competition and erratic profits. In the petroleum retail business, for example, does it really matter to the consumer if gas is purchased from Petro Can or Chevron? Does the consumer care if a seat to Chicago is purchased on Delta, United or Air Canada? Price is usually the single factor in the purchase of an airline ticket. Twenty-five years ago, I used to fly between Calgary and Vancouver to attend

UBC. I paid around $300 return for a ticket then. Today, I can still buy a ticket for $300 (plus tax). According to Buffett’s scenario, this is a commodity type business with poor economics. There are periods of economic boom when the demand for physical commodities such as oil and metals during 2005-2007, and 2009-2010 outstrips supply. Prices escalate rapidly due to excess demand. At times like these, all producers make substantial profits. But in time, the laws of economics assert themselves and higher prices stimulate new supplies, which in turn drive prices and profits down again. This is why they are called cyclical businesses. Buffett looks for companies with great economics, i.e., steady, predictable earnings. Many of these investments are what he calls a consumer monopoly. In 1938, Lawrence Bloomberg wrote a paper entitled The Investment Value of Goodwill. He compared commodity businesses to consumer monopolies. He wrote that consumer monopolies are superior because they have goodwill. That goodwill is “some distinctive attibute(s) that are particularly attractive to buyers, who then form an attachment to the company and product it sells.” The goodwill is some sort of distinctive competitive advantage. That advantage could be a secret formula such as Coca Cola, or a patent protection for a unique product--Microsoft. That competitive advantage leads to higher profits, higher return on equity and high stock prices. Those are the types of companies in which Buffett invests.

Buffett has a conceptual test that he applies to determine if a company has as consumer monopoly. “If I had billions of dollars (which he does) and access to top management talent (which he does) could I successfully start and compete against this business? If the answer is unequivocally “no”, then he deems the company a consumer monopoly. Here are a few examples: Is it possible to start a new business to compete against the Wall Street Journal? The New York Stock Exchange Group? Coca Cola? Microsoft? Nike? These kinds of businesses excel in part because they do not have to invest heavily in land, plant facilities or equipment— unlike commodity producers. In contrast, the consumer monopoly has much of its wealth invested in intangible assets, such as a formula, a patent or very long-term contracts. Because it does not have to make huge investments to replace equipment or facilities, it tends to be debt-free and have large cash flows. Contrast this to Teck Cominco, which has to invest billions to open a new mine. Other considerations used by Buffett before investing include: a strong 10-year track record of steady, consistent earnings with; a high return on shareholder’s equity—it must be able to re-invest those earnings back into the company (through investment or share-buy backs) and earn the same high rate of return; and must be conservatively financed. Finally, Buffett seeks to buy at a reasonable price. This is often a challenge, since quality businesses usually trade at a premium price. Car Maintenance

A leaking water pump prevents a major disaster By Bernie Pawlik While repairing a water pump on a 1990 Toyota pickup equipped with a threelitre V6 engine, my auto shop mechanic came upon this very badly worn and about to break timing belt. It was perhaps by good fortune that this water pump was leaking as the vehicle was new to our client and he had no idea of the timing belt’s condition. Following are a few facts about timing belts. The timing belt’s primary purpose is to drive the engine’s camshaft(s) in perfect synchronization with the crankshaft. This precisely times the movement of the engine pistons with the intake and exhaust valves. Some engines have two timing belts and often one of these operates balance shafts. Balance shafts are installed to smooth out the subtle but inherent shaking that occurs in four-cylinder engines. On some engines the timing belt also drives the water pump and/or the oil pump. On many engines if the timing belt breaks the pistons and valves will collide and cause very expensive damage. This type of engine is known as an interference engine. On all engines, when the timing belt breaks, the engine stops immediately and

cannot be restarted until repaired. Timing belts almost always give no warning before they fail. On most engines, inspecting the timing belt can be quite time-consuming as it is located under plastic covers and these are often covered with pipes, hoses and accessories. A proper timing belt replacement involves not just replacing the timing belt but also the front camshaft and crankshaft oil seals, timing belt tensioner pulley, idler pulley(s), tensioner assembly and water pump (depending on engine design). Replacement intervals for most vehicles since the 2000 model year is 168,000 kilometres or higher, however consult the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule to be certain. Cars manufactured prior to 2000 usually have shorter intervals and many cars made in the 1980s or 1990s require replacement at 96,000 kilometres or sooner.

The service launched in Vancouver in June with more than 1,000 rentals per week. Today, the average number of car2go rentals per week has increased to more than 4,000. The average rental time is between 30 and 50 minutes, and the average distance driven is between eight and ten kilometres. This mode of transportation, which focuses on reducing congestion and emissions, supports the City of Vancouver’s goal of becoming the greenest city by 2020 and complements existing public transportation options. The fleet of 225 car2go edition smart fortwo vehicles is distributed throughout the City of Vancouver for ‘free floating’ rentals—members can rent without committing to a specific return time or location. Once rented, members can use the cars for as long as they would like and pay only for the time they use the vehicle. The operating area for car2go was expanded in September 2011 and now reaches more than 300,000 residents of Vancouver. For a limited time, residents who register for car2go will receive 100 free minutes of driving time. A $2 mandatory fee for ICBC is charged annually to each member who registers and is given as a charitable donation to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

Know Your Wine

Champagne

C

hampagne (pronounced shampain) is a sparkling wine in which the carbon dioxide gas is produced as part of the fermentation process and is dissolved within the wine in its individual bottle, so that when it is released, the bubbles stream to the surface. The term champagne is used to refer to wine produced exclusively within the Champagne region of France, although there are many sparkling wines that are produced in other countries and regions. Most Champagne is blended wine, made from a mix of three different grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Champagne is made in various styles, from

bone-dry to fully sweet. The style is identified on the label: BRUT - very dry and savoury, usually best quality and good with food EXTRA DRY - a little more sweet than Brut SEC - medium-dry, good for parties or Champagne breakfasts DOUX - sweet, good for desserts. When making any cocktail with Champagne, be sure to add the Champagne to the flute last. Pour the Champagne slowly over the other ingredients to avoid an overflow. For best results serve Champagne cocktails right away.

Side-by-side comparison of Champagne bottles. (L to R) On ladder: Magnum (1.5 litres), full (0.75 litre), half (0.375 litre), quarter (0.1875 litre). On floor: Balthazar (12 litres), Salmanazar (9 litres), Methuselah (6 litres), Jeroboam (3 litres).

First B.C. family to receive keys to 2011 Nissan LEAF Nissan Canada delivered the province’s first all-electric Nissan LEAF to a retail customer. Bill and Nicole Clendinning along with four-year old daughter Tara, have taken delivery of a red Nissan LEAF SL. Both Bill and Nicole Clendinning work at BC Hydro and are committed to reducing their family’s environmental impact and switching to the Nissan LEAF is a big part of that. It fits their lifestyle offering ample range for trips to Mission and Whistler, where they enjoy going for weekend getaways. “In British Columbia, transportation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and we believe that electric vehicles are an important part of how our province can reduce our use of fossil fuels,” said Nicole Clendinning. “What set the Nissan LEAF apart from other vehicles in the market was the driving experience—it’s so fun to drive. You forget you’re in an electric car and get back to the joy of driving. By choosing this car we feel like we get to have our cake and eat it too.” Later this month, Nissan Canada will open its online reservation process for its first allocation of 2012 Model Year Nissan LEAFs. Reservations are eligible to those registered on the Nissan LEAF microsite (nissan.ca/LEAF) and living within the vicinity of the 27 Electric Vehicle-certified dealers across Canada. By the end of the 2012 Model Year, Nissan anticipates 600 Nissan LEAFs on Canadian roads.

B.C.’s Clendinning family takes delivery of the province’s first consumer all-electric Nissan LEAF.
