On the evening of Feb. 1, an Ilyushin IL-76 giant, Soviet-era cargo plane touched down at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The specially configured aircraft’s two-day journey began in Kabul, Afghanistan, making stops in Turkey and Iceland before landing in Vancouver. Its precious cargo was 158 dogs and 146 cats, stranded in Afghanistan when American troops withdrew in August 2021. At that time, a highly volatile situation and related logistical hurdles made the animals’ evacuation impossible. Throughout fall 2021, special donations to Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR) helped support the ongoing care of the animals while

efforts were in progress to evacuate them. Canada provided the best option as a final destination because of a U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) suspension on canine imports from more than 100 countries (Afghanistan included). A coalition of animal organizations—War Paws, Marley’s Mutts, RainCoast

Dog Rescue Society and Thank DOG I am Out (TDIAO)—was formed to set up a specially constructed temporary facility at YVR to receive almost 300 animals still in KSAR’s care. The coalition group worked non-stop, following strict guidelines, comprehensively documenting every animal for import, and ensuring

the set up of a 1,600-squaremetre facility in record time at YVR to house the animals on their arrival. When the plane landed, a large crowd gathered on the YVR tarmac to welcome the animals, including elated owners anxiously waiting to reunite with their loved ones. Eighty of the animals will ultimately reunite with

their owners, and the others will be available for adoption through SPCA International (spcai.org) and B.C.-based RainCoast Dog Rescue Society (raincoastdogrescue.com). Experienced staff and volunteers will care for the animals at the temporary YVR facility until they receive the safe homes they deserve.

YVR’s digital twin makes the news

As YVR continues to evaluate and optimize its operations, it’s no surprise that teams across its organization have big goals coming into 2022, which certainly includes all who touch YVR’s digital twin. A digital twin is a virtual clone of a real-life object, acting and reacting in virtual space the same way its physical counterpart does.

For example, this technology would allow an airport manager to see what is occurring at any one of YVR’s 17 gates and even access localized audio without being at that gate. As YVR continues to unlock and implement the true potential of this new technology, it is celebrating the little wins along the way, including an article recently

published in WIRED magazine (wired.com). The article mentions YVR’s adoption of digital twin technology in partnership with software development company Unity Technologies, which leveraged its gaming technology to build the airport’s immersive, real-time digital twin. As YVR progresses towards

launching its digital twin story globally, it is pleasing to see its partners gaining recognition for a shared vision of leveraging data and technology to better the airport’s operations and serve the

community and economy that supports it. Stay tuned—YVR will reveal more information on its digital twin technology in 2022!

YVR and ITBC join forces to advance B.C.’s Indigenous tourism

Tamara Vrooman (left), president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority, signed the MOU to advance B.C.’s Indigenous tourism with Brenda Baptiste, ITBC Chair of the Board.

YVR and Indigenous Tourism BC (ITBC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), creating a new partnership that supports each organization’s goals, contributes to the growth of tourism and drives awareness for the diverse regions of British Columbia. The surrounding principle of the MOU is collaboration, including opportunities for cross-promotion in the tourism industry, data and knowledge sharing, as well as leveraging market intelligence to help grow and advance Indigenous tourism in B.C. In pursuit of that growth, a new interactive kiosk at YVR allows passengers, airport workers and the community to experience one of B.C.’s Indigenous tourism experiences. The kiosk, set up as a welcoming installation, is in the terminal, near U.S. Departures on

Level 3. “At YVR, we are all about connections,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “As we have learned working with Musqueam, whose traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory YVR is on, Indigenous peoples in British Columbia maintain deep connections to the lands, waters, animals, and supernatural realms of their unique Territories. We look forward to combining our efforts to advance these vital connections on all fronts to advance new opportunities for tourism that contribute to the success of our Indigenous communities.” This MOU builds on YVR’s commitment to Indigenous tourism in Canada, also demonstrated by the airport’s signing of a historic MOU with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) in 2020.

Musqueam elders welcome newcomers to YVR with a cedar brushing to release negative energy and ensure a safe path on their journey forward.

Airbus has launched a new air-cargo service using its unique BelugaST fleet to offer freight companies and other potential customers a solution to their oversized freight transportation needs. Airbus Beluga Transport will provide commercially contracted customers in various sectors, including space, energy, military, aeronautic, maritime, and humanitarian. The first mission occurred at the end of 2021 with a delivery from Airbus Helicopters’ manufacturing site in Marignane, France, to Kobe in Japan for an undisclosed customer. Based on the A300-600

design, the five-strong BelugaST fleet, which has until now been the backbone of Airbus’ inter-site transportation of large aircraft sections, is being replaced by six new-generation BelugaXLs to support Airbus’ ramp-up of its airliner production. The new Airbus Beluga Transport service can cater to many possible market applications since the planes possess the world’s largest interior crosssection of any transport aircraft, accommodating outsized cargo of up to 7.1m in width and 6.7m in width height. Boeing’s million-litre SAF purchase demonstrates its commitment to decarbonizing aviation operations

Boeing has reached a supply agreement to purchase 7.5-million litres of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from EPIC Fuels to power Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes operations in Washington state and South Carolina through 2022. The agreement is the largest announced SAF procurement by an airframer and aligns with Boeing’s commitment to decarbonizing aviation. “SAF is a safe, proven, immediate solution that will help achieve our industry’s long-term commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Sheila Remes, Boeing vice president of environmental sustainability.

“Boeing has been a pioneer in making sustainable aviation fuels a reality. Through this agreement, we will reduce our carbon footprint and have SAF available for customer deliveries as well as our own operations.” Sustainably produced jet fuel, which currently reduces CO2 emissions by more than 75 per cent over the fuel’s life cycle (with the potential to reach 100 per cent in the future), is recognized as offering the most immediate and significant potential to decarbonize aviation over the next 20 to 30 years. Created from several feedstocks certified for commercial use, SAF blends with traditional

with conventional jet fuel for commercial flights. The new purchase agreement with EPIC Fuels includes a SAF product made from inedible agricultural waste, blending 30 per cent neat SAF with 70 per cent conventional jet fuel. This purchase will allow broader use of SAF for Boeing commercial production, test, ferry, Dreamlifter and customer flights at its facilities in Everett, Renton and Seatt le in Washington state and North Charleston, South Carolina. EPIC Fuels will also continue to supply customized blends from 50/50 per cent up to 100 per cent SAF for Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program, which accelerates innovation by taking promising technologies out of the lab and testing them in the air to

solve real-world challenges for airlines and passengers. Boeing began SAF test flights in 2008, helped gain approval for commercial use in 2011 and enabled airplane delivery flights with SAF in 2012. The 2018 Boeing ecoDemonstrator conducted the industry’s first 100 percent SAF commercial airplane test flight on a 777 Freighter in partnership with FedEx. In 2019, Boeing began offering customers the option to power commercial delivery flights with SAF to demonstrate commitment to reducing CO2 and further spur the use of cleaner fuels. In 2021, Boeing committed to delivering its commercial airplanes capable and certified to fly on 100 per cent SAF by 2030.

Hagerty’s ‘Buy these vehicles before they’re hot’ annual Bull Market List Hagerty Insurance has unveiled its yearly Bull Market list, which features the enthusiast cars and trucks that its market experts predict will increase in value over the next 12 months. The list is not intended for getrich-quick flippers but for future owners who want to find, buy and drive a good vehicle they love. 1965–70 Cadillac DeVille ($28,800) In the past, collectors flocked to the late ’50s Cadillacs with their iconic fins, ignoring the more modern and usable late ’60s models. That is changing, and this generation of Cadillacs remains highly affordable–par-

It all came together in the first-generation RX-7, a lithe sports car that turned the performance-car segment on its head by exploiting the tiny engine’s massive potential. Thanks to the functional shape of its hardtop, the 230SL goes by the nickname “Pagoda.”

Its hatchback practicality and excellent highway fuel economy make it a viable daily driver. 1985–95 Suzuki Samurai ($10,200) Everything about the Suzuki Samurai feels light and toylike, but they were well built and extremely hardy in the finest Japanese tradition. The engine was a V-6 instead of the legendary V-12, mounted behind the driver instead of under the hood. It was this departure, however, that makes the Dino special. It is still considered one of the most significant road-going Ferraris of all time—for a price that amounts to an auction buyer’s premium on most other vintage Ferraris. 1983–97 Land Rover Defender ($61,400) There’s a sophisticated glamour to driving the original aluminum-bodied earth-roamer, whose lineage dates right back to the 1948 original. Airline wastewater study proves effective in determining presence of COVID-19 in travellers An assistant professor from Louisana’s LSU Civil & Environmental Engineering department is researching pathogen detection in water at LSU and joining forces with researchers worldwide, namely in Australia, studying wastewater on international flights. Before joining LSU earlier this year, Professor Aaron Bivins researched waterborne pathogen detection in surface and drinking water. Then the pandemic hit in early 2020, which prompted him to co-found the COVID-19 Wastewater-based Epidemiology Collaborative, a group that now has 1,200 members around the globe. “I just tried to get people together to share methods and approaches because at first, everyone was trying to figure out how we were going to measure this virus in wastewater,” Bivins said. “That’s how I met my collaborators in Australia.” In 2020, many cruise ships worldwide were forced to dock because passengers were sick with COVID-19. When one ship docked in Australia, Bivins suggested that his collaborators there collect its wastewater. They then realized that they could also test wastewater on planes. “In our first paper, we collected wastewater samples from three different flights into Australia and from a cruise ship,” Bivins said. “We were able to detect the virus RNA in the samples.” In a second paper, Bivins and his colleagues were able to link wastewater samples with the future development of COVID19 among passengers during quarantine. “The plane passengers had all been tested prior to boarding, and all of them (1,600 total) all tested negative, so they were allowed to fly home to Australia. During the two-week quarantine period that is required by Australia for returning citizens, 112 developed COVID.” What Bivins and his collaborators found was that the wastewater they had collected

from the flights was about 85 per cent accurate in predicting those future COVID cases. Of the 112 passengers who contracted COVID, 105 positive wastewater samples came from 105 of them. That left only seven cases corresponding with negative samples. Bivins proposes testing discarded aircraft wastewater while passengers exit the plane and, ideally, having a testing lab at the airport. His team has been working with Qantas Airlines in Australia. The airline has already designed

equipment to collect samples directly from its aircraft during the routine flushing of its wastewater. While Bivins acknowledges not every international flight can be tested, randomly selecting a few hundred each day could make a difference. “The idea would be that eventually, we could use international flights to monitor what’s been in and out of the country in terms of antibiotic resistance and other pathogens,” said Bivins. “We probably can’t control their movement, but we can at least be aware of what’s coming and going and how these microorganisms move about the world.
