YVR Order Now, an in-terminal mobile food and beverage ordering service
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has launched YVR Order Now, a mobile food and beverage ordering service to reduce lineups and provide greater service convenience.
YVR Order Now allows customers to skip the wait by pre-ordering their meals online at yvr.ca/ordernow. Customers can choose and pay for their favourite bites online and pick them up on the way to the office, in between meetings or during their travel journey.
The introduction of YVR Order Now provides another way for passengers and employees to access readily available in-terminal food
options--both pre and post security—all with the ease of their mobile phones.
In addition, YVR is trans forming its food and beverage program to provide more
fresh, local, and authentic offerings reflective of the B.C. community’s vibrant and diverse culinary choices.
The YVR Order Now web-based program is avail
able at more than 20 partici pating in-terminal restaurants, including Canucks Bar & Grill, Joe & The Juice, Pacific Farms Market, Subway, Tim Hortons, Vino Volo, and
Wendy’s, with more options to be added later in the year.
“The YVR Order Now program is another example of innovation and digital transfor mation helping make the travel journey through YVR an effortless and enjoyable one,” said Robyn McVicker, YVR vice president of passenger journey. “As travellers look for a more personalized experi ence, they will now have the opportunity to order from our fresh, local restaurant partners and enjoy delicious food either while waiting for their flight or onboard the aircraft.”
Place your order at par ticipating YVR food and bev erage outlets by visiting yvr.ca/ordernow.
During Tourism Week in Canada 2022 (May 29-June 4), a Canadian Travel & Tourism Roundtable, com prised of leaders from airlines, airports, hotels and travel organizations, called on the Canadian federal government to promote a responsible postCOVID-19 reboot of the trav el and tourism industry. This includes providing urgent relief at the border by alleviat ing pressures currently facing travellers at Canada’s airports.
The Roundtable acknowl edged appreciation for recent decisions by the federal government to increase the number of Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) screening officers. However, the Roundtable views these measures as longer-term solutions that will take weeks before impacting wait times for travellers at Canadian airports.
As such, the Roundtable urged the federal government
to take the following shortterm actions to alleviate pres sure on the system by no later than June 15, 2022:
• Remove vaccination mandates for Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) workers;
• Remove the Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) duplicate health checks and questions through ArriveCan at government checkpoints
• Relocate or remove on-site mandatory random testing from Canada’s airports; and,
• Establish clear service stan dard benchmarks for secu rity and customs processing of passengers travelling through Canadian airports. The Roundtable also urged the federal government to remove the bottleneck
and bureaucratic travel processes, streamline govern ment checkpoints and require their agencies to meet their intended levels of service and performance benchmarks to help the travel and tourism sector recover.
“As demand for travel returns and other global econ omies re-open, Canada’s bor der policies need to reflect the new reality, or risk being a country left behind,” said Suzanne Acton-Gervais, interim president and CEO of the National Airlines Council of Canada. “It is time for the Government of Canada to revisit COVID-19 pandemic restrictions placed on air travel, in line with a grow ing list of over 50 countries that have removed barriers to travel altogether.”
Travel and Tourism is a $105-billion sector, employ ing millions of Canadians across the country and accounting for 2.1 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.
To celebrate its 30th anni versary in 2019, Tawain-based Eva Air airline introduced Boeing 787-10 aircraft, the newest and largest model in the Dreamliner family, on its international routes.
Technologies used to build the Boeing 787 Dreamliner make the aircraft more environmentally effi cient. Constructed of lighter composite materials, such as carbon fibre, more than 50 per cent of the aircraft’s total weight, including fuselage, wings and engine fan blades, comes from these materials.
The Boeing 787-10 is 68.3 metres long, approximately 5 metres longer than the 787-9.
EVA has configured its 787-10 aircraft for 342 pas sengers, with 34 in Royal Laurel Class business, acknowledged as one of the best business classes world wide, and 308 in Economy.
From June 25, 2022, to July 25, 2022, EVA will operate a four-times weekly non-stop summer service from Vancouver (YVR) to Taipei (TPE) using its 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft.
For more information on flight times and dates, visit evaair.com.
Compared to traditional aluminum alloy fuselage construction, these advanced materials significantly decrease the aircraft’s overall weight and the likelihood of metal fatigue or corrosion, reducing maintenance costs. The replacement of fluores cent tubes with LED lights also lowers power demand by almost half.

As YVR looks to expand its role in B.C.’s economy, it introduced an Innovation Hub in 2021 to provide a platform to connect and collaborate with local businesses to lead in B.C.’s economic recovery.
Therefore, it is not surprising that seeking partnerships that transform how the airport serves employees, passengers, and the community and elevates the technology and innovation sector here in B.C. is central to YVR’s operation.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, YVR’s TAKEcare program helped ensure the health and safety of everyone who passed through the airport. Now, through a new partnership with Teck Resources Copper & Health Program, YVR has become the first airport in Canada to incorporate antimi crobial copper to enhance the cleanliness and sanitization of its terminals.
Copper has unique antimi crobial properties and is proven
effective in eliminating up to 99.9 per cent of harmful bacteria within two hours. When installed in high-touch, high-traffic loca tions, antimicrobial copper can help reduce the spread of infection.
As tens of thousands of pas sengers move throughout the airport each day, installing anti microbial copper applications on baggage carts, water fountains, washroom doors, and other hightouch surfaces at YVR provides an added layer of protection to standard cleaning and reduces the spread of bacteria.
In partnering with a locally based brand such as Teck, YVR is advancing new ideas and solu tions that benefit the community, solving challenges outside of aviation, and making it more than solely an airport.
For more information about the role of antimicrobial copper, the Copper & Health program, and other examples of copper in action, please visit coppersaveslives.com.
Sunflower Program for hidden disability awareness
May 29 to June 4 was Canada’s sixth annual National Accessibility Week, one dedi cated to promoting inclusive ness and accessibility in local communities and celebrating diversity.
This year, starting May 30, YVR partnered with the Sunflower Lanyard Program for Hidden Disability Awareness to assist passengers with hidden disabilities who may need a little extra support, time, or assistance while travelling through the airport.
Through this program, individuals with invisible dis abilities, such as autism, chronic pain, epilepsy, low vision, hear ing loss, dementia, anxiety dis orders, and brain injuries, may choose to wear the Sunflower
lanyard as a discreet way to indicate to YVR airport staff that they may need extra assistance when going through the airport processes.
At YVR, its Guest Experience Team, Green Coats, and airline partners (Air Canada, WestJet & Delta) have extended their support to the Sunflower Program.
Free Sunflower lanyards (or stickers) for this entirely voluntary program for people with hidden disabilities and their families can be obtained from the Customer Care and Information counters at YVR’s Main and South terminals.

On May 17, YVR and Musqueam came together with their partners to name and open a new pathway xwq̓axintəl' ct (Walking Together) in the Templeton Corridor.
Developed cooperatively with Musqueam and the Sea Island community, the pathway creatively uses a parcel of land
to connect the local active transportation network, Canada Line stations and the Iona Beach Regional Park.
It also provides an enhanced greenspace and natural buffer between the airport lands and nearby Sea Island residences.
The pathway is commemo rative of the past and future,
FREEDOM.
Introducing Inogen
including Musqueam, the air port, City of Richmond, and the Burkeville community.
As YVR and Musqueam mark the fifth year of their Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, Vancouver Airport Authority considers it an honour that Musqueam gave their bless ing and permission to name the
pathway in the language of the Musqueam people.
The name, xwq̓axintəl’ ct (Walking Together), reflects the relationship between Musqueam and YVR, which is based on friendship and respect to achieve a sustainable and mutually ben eficial future for the community, and the lands on which YVR
operates.
The pathway also signifies collaboration. YVR engaged with the Burkeville community to create this space and worked
together with Musqueam to identify and plant hundreds of trees and native plant species to enhance the natural ecosystem and habitats of the corridor and surrounding area.
The pathway is now open, and YVR looks forward to continued work with Musqueam and the community on ways to bring the history of this shared greenspace to life.
Indigenous History Month celebrated at YVR
The month of June com memorates Indigenous History in Canada and also marks the fifth anniversary of the Musqueam Indian BandYVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement.
While this 30-year Agreement between Musqueam and YVR acknowledges the past, it looks ahead with a continued commitment to reconciliation and the pursuit of opportunities to strengthen their partnership.
For Indigenous History Month, YVR is taking the opportunity to celebrate Musqueam culture, focusing on the many new and existing col laborative ways in which it cre ates education-to-employment opportunities and encouraging its partners to do the same.
During the ceremonial event, Musqueam guided a Call to Witness protocol to name and open the pathway.

Aglow with new energyefficient lighting
At YVR, more than 20,000 lights have been upgraded with new LED bulbs throughout the terminal.
The upgrade is expected to decrease electricity use by 2.8 gigawatt-hours per year, which is the equivalent of powering 255 B.C. homes.
Not only does the airport’s new LED lighting improve ener gy efficiency and help advance YVR’s environmental goals, but it also provides enhanced ambi
ance for passengers and workers as they move throughout the terminal.
This lighting efficiency proj ect is among the first to be com pleted under YVR’s Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon 2030, accelerat ing the airport’s original climate commitment by 20 years.

Volocopter’s electric 4-seater takes first flight
Urban air mobility (UAM) company Volocopter has attained another milestone in bringing UAM to life: its fixed-winged passenger aircraft, the VoloConnect, completed its first flight in May 2022.
The achievement makes Volocopter the only eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft) developer worldwide to have an entire fleet of distinct aircraft configurations undergoing flight tests.
With its VoloCity and VoloConnect air taxi designs for metropolitan flights and subur
ban connections, respectively, Volocopter is gearing up to serve a broad range of passengers’ flight needs.
The VoloConnect targets a 2026 entry into service, while the VoloCity targets a commer cial launch in 2024.
“Having a whole family of electric aircraft in the test flight phase is a pioneering feat,” said Florian Reuter, Volocopter CEO. “Our technology platform is the foundation for our fam ily of aircraft approach and has proven to deliver results at an astounding speed. Volocopter is
bringing these innovative designs off the ground, into the air, and then to cities worldwide!”
The VoloConnect is a liftand-cruise aircraft optimized for missions beyond the urban and suburban space. While keeping moving parts to a minimum, its six rotors facilitate vertical take off, while two electric fans com bined with uplift-creating wings ensure high forward speeds.
With more than 500 employ ees in offices in Germany and Singapore, Volocopter has raised $579 million in equity from investors.
NAV Canada’s new air traffic control technology cuts aircraft delays and emissions
Photo: courtesy NAV Canada.
NAV Canada has become the first Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) in North America to deploy the Intelligent Approach (IA) time-based separation tool that helps deliver better on-time performance by optimizing the spacing between arriving aircraft.
Deployed at Toronto Pearson International Airport, this new technology adds additional tacti cal capacity across the airport’s five runways. It will help reduce delays, fuel burn and C02 emis sions, particularly in high wind conditions.
NAV Canada worked closely
with its UK counterpart, NATS, and the science and technol ogy leader Leidos, to success fully transition to the IA system on May 28.
Jointly developed by NATS and Leidos, the IA system dynamically calculates the opti mum time interval between arriv als based on live weather data and the aircraft type rather than set distances. It then translates that into a visual marker on a controller’s radar screen, helping to improve spacing consistency and maintain the landing rate— even in strong headwinds.
First introduced at Heathrow
Airport in 2015, IA’s time-based separation to maintain the land ing rate has cut headwind-related delays by 62 per cent at that airport.
NAV Canada is a private, not-for-profit company estab lished in 1996, providing air traffic control, airport advisory services, weather briefings and aeronautical information services for more than 18 million square kilometres of Canadian domestic and international airspace.
Air navigation service pro viders worldwide use traffic management systems developed by NAV Canada.

KLM adopts digital twins to improve operating efficiencies
The oldest airline glob ally, KLM, has adopted one of the newest technologies, the Matterport 3D platform, to create a digital twin of each aircraft type in its fleet to train its ground crews and provide an immersive virtual experience for its customers.
KLM began using Matterport in 2017, capturing the first digital twin of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to train ground crews on cleaning the aircraft. When its ground crews reduced cleaning time by 30 per cent, KLM recognized the potential of Matterport digital twins to streamline training for other departments and utilized the 3D platform to capture digital twins of its entire fleet.
Today, KLM manages a library of 104 digital twins, including multiple versions for each of the 14 types of Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer aircraft that make up its fleet.
KLM’s flight attendants have utilized Matterport’s digital twins to learn the location of safety and hospitality items on aircraft, and ground crews have used an annotated digital twin
that illustrates service trolleys’ stowage areas.
Additionally, pilots can eas ily refer to the aircraft’s digital twin for confirmation if they detect an issue during pre-flight safety checks.
KLM’s digital twins have also helped streamline the air line’s fleet management. For example, when upgrading the Wi-Fi routers used on an aircraft, KLM used the highly accurate data within a digital twin to con firm measurements and optimize the placement of new routers.
Beyond training its internal teams, KLM uses digital twins to showcase its aircraft cabins to travellers. Passengers can experience an aircraft’s cabin virtually, compare sections, and view their ideal seat before purchasing. KLM’s Boeing Dreamliner digital twin, which has received more than 70,000 views, highlights the indi vidual privacy partitions and top-tier entertainment systems available to business class travellers.
For information on KLM flights from Vancouver, visit klm.ca.
A memorandum of under standing (MOU) has been signed between KLM and Edmonton International (YEG) to col laborate further on sustainability initiatives.
The agreement comes after KLM operated a service from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to the Canadian airport as part of the SkyTeam alliance’s Sustainable Flight Challenge competition.
The competition sees 16 member airlines attempting to stage the most sustainable flight possible.
KLM Flight 675, a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, landed at YEG on May 7, 2022, powered
by a fuel blend consisting of 39 per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
In addition, several new weight-reduction measures were taken, including using artificial intelligence modelling to predict inflight water requirements.
KLM chose YEG as the flight’s destination because of the airport’s sustainability initia tives, including a co-generation power facility, a commitment to hydrogen development, and the upcoming Airport City Solar.
Airport City Solar will be the world’s largest solar farm at an airport, producing enough elec tricity to power between 27,000 and 28,000 homes per year.

Porsche boxer engines
Our technicians at Pawlik Automotive have been work ing on a personal project of getting a 2002 Porsche 911 up and running after its IMS bearing wore out and dam aged the engine.
The IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing on spe cific Porsche model years is designed poorly (for those Porsche boxer engine own ers who may not know this). It can fail without warning, so replacement is a critical Porsche maintenance function
that should be done before it fails.
Currently, there is an active recall on 2013, 2014 and 2015 Boxster and Cayman models due to rear axle suspension issues. The rear axle carrier side mounts might crack and break on some Porsche vehicles. If both mounts fail while driv ing, the results could include a collision. Porsche will contact customers by mail with the instructions to take their vehicle to a dealership
for the axle side mounts replacement.
For more information on the Porsche vehicle recalls, visit the Transport Canada website wwwapps.tc.gc.ca.
