It’s beginning to feel a lot like the holidays at YVR. The airport’s International Terminal is decked out with festive Christmas trees benefiting a local charity thanks to businesses and students from Metro Vancouver. Students, aged Kindergarten to Grade Four, from 16 schools across Burnaby, Delta, Richmond and Vancouver made the trip to the airport to decorate their tree with handmade ornaments. This is the 13th year that local businesses at YVR have generously sponsored the Christmas trees for $300 each. All the trees are on display on the columns in the International Terminal. The public is encouraged to donate and vote on their favorite tree. All proceeds of the program will directly support Quest Food Exchange and the purchase of food

Passengers and employees arriving at YVR on the Canada Line recently have probably shared the ride with a throng of very excited Grade 5 students. The airport has been abuzz with these students since September, when YVR’s School Tour program –The Future Lands Here kicked off for the 2011 season. For 10 weeks, more than 1,750 students from 43 Metro Vancouver schools participated in Vancouver Airport Authority’s annual tour program, whereby three tour guides assisted by Green Coat volunteers opened up the hearts and imaginations of children by teaching them about the wonders of an international airport. Along the way, students benefitted from hearing from many of YVR’s 23,600 employees, including airfield emergency crews; the airport Chaplain; an environmental specialist; a baggage system technician; an RCMP officer and his RCMP dog, Jett Black; as well as Live@YVR storyteller Jaeger Mah, who lived at the airport for 80 days. Students also learned about a number of key areas at YVR by visiting the Public Observation Area to view airfield activity, acting out characters at the Haida Gwaii, exploring the living wall at the Canada Line station, learning how to pack a bag for air travel and understanding flight information display boards. The tour was extremely well received by teachers and students, with content oftentimes tied to the students’ current curriculum, making the field trip all the more relevant. A particular favourite was meeting YVR firefighters and learning about the airport’s connection to First Nations

YVR community members rolled up their sleeves last month when Canadian Blood Services brought its Bloodmobile to the airport. In total, 32 units, or close to 14 litres, of blood were donated during the one-day mobile donor clinic, held on November 18. Each donation can save up to three lives.

The Bloodmobile, which travels around the Metro Vancouver area and collects up to 8,000 donations every year, is a self-contained mobile donor clinic on wheels that is equipped with four collection stations where donors can give blood in a relaxed setting. In 2011, Vancouver Airport Authority partnered with Quest Food Exchange as its official transportation sponsor to help reduce hunger with dignity while reducing airport waste. To date, the YVR community has donated more than $120,000 cash and $130,000 worth of food, thereby diverting more than 2,100 kilograms of waste from the landfill. In October, the Airport Authority matched its employees’ food donations as part of a Hamper Drive to gather a combined 320 hampers of food for Quest. Last month, Green Coat volunteers,

tenants and partners launched their own food drive to augment the donation. In addition, $9,000 in airport business community sponsorship funds for the YVR Christmas Tree Decorating Contest will be used to fund a turkey for each of the hampers, and donations received from the public as part of the tree-voting process will also be donated to Quest. Quest Food Exchange collects and

distributes overstocked, mislabelled or near-expiry products that would otherwise go to waste and diverts that food to people who need it. Operating three low-cost grocery stores, Quest offers food to nearly 400 social service agencies and their clients for a fraction of the retail cost. For more information, visit questoutreach.org.

Four Canadians to be inducted to Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame Next June, Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame (CAHF) will induct four Canadians and recognize a Belt of Orion recipient at its 2012 annual gala dinner and ceremony. The new members will join a roster of 204 men and women aviation pioneers who have been previously honoured since the formation of CAHF in 1973.

Official medal of Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. The inductees’ achievements span the spectrum of Canada’s rich aviation history, ranging from the First World War to the space age. They are recognized for playing integral roles in the development of their respective aviation fields and contributing to Canada’s development through these roles. Nils Christensen of Salt Spring Island, B.C., made his contribution to Canadian aviation with the founding of Viking Air and the acquisition of the rights from de Havilland Canada to manufacture spares for some of its post-war products. The venture has given rise to an internationally reputed aircraft and parts manufacturing

concern. Born in Norway in 1921, Nils served in the Merchant Navy and the Royal Norwegian Air Force during the Second World War and emigrated to Canada in 1951. Air Marshal Harold “Gus” Edwards (1892-1952) was born in England and raised in Nova Scotia. He served as a pilot with the Royal Naval Air Service in the First World War and was later intimately involved with the founding of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Edwards was in charge of the personnel management aspects of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan when it began and then fought successfully for the Canadianization of the RCAF’s contributions to Allied efforts in the Royal Air Force as Air Office Commanding-in-Chief of RCAF Overseas. Pierre Jeanniot, O.C. C.Q., was born in France in 1933 and emigrated to Canada in 1947. He is a former president and CEO of Air Canada and is known as an innovator in the field of airline operations and management and for his contributions to the development of civil aviation in Canada and around the world. His work at Air Canada, and with the International Air Transport Association as director general and CEO, has been recognized with honours from Canada, France and international organizations. Dr. Daffyd (Dave) Williams, born in Saskatoon in 1954, is a pilot, medical doctor and a retired Canadian astronaut. He was appointed director of NASA’s Space and Life Sciences Directorate, a rare accomplishment for a non-American astronaut. Williams made two flights on the Space Shuttle, 1998 and 2007. During the latter, he was involved in three spacewalks for installations at the International Space Station. In addition to the four inductees, CAHF will also honour Leavens Aviation Inc. with its Belt of Orion Award for Excellence. The award honours organizations, groups, societies or associations that have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of aviation in Canada. Leavens Aviation Inc. began as Leavens Brothers Air Services in 1927 and is one of Canada’s great aviation success stories. Its life encompassed several aspects of aviation in Canada, starting with barnstorming a single aircraft, then flight training, running a major training facility under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), spraying operations, commercial airline operations, light aircraft manufacturing and the sale, distribution and overhaul of aircraft parts.

The CAHF 2012 annual dinner and ceremony will be held in Montreal. Tickets for the event are available through the CAHF website (cahf.ca), and also include a one-year Friend of the Hall membership. A tax receipt will be supplied for each ticket sold.

American files for Chapter 11

www.skytalkonline.com

Aviation History

A family of aviators By Jack Schofield

American Airlines is the only major U.S. airline that leaves the majority of its aircraft surfaces unpainted. Last month, American Airlines and its parent, AMR, filed for bankruptcy protection. American is the world’s fourth-largest airline in terms of operating revenues and passenger miles transported. According to a company statement, the airline filed after failing to “achieve a cost and debt structure that is industry competitive and thereby assure its long-term viability and ability to continue delivering a world-class travel experience for its customers.” American had the aviation industry’s highest labour costs and until it filed last month, was the only major U.S. airline to have avoided bankruptcy. While the filing was not a surprise, its timing came sooner than many analysts expected since American has a US$4.1-

billion stockpile of cash. According to Ascend Worldwide, an aerospace consultancy firm, American’s fleet has 614 aircraft of which 176 are leased. Half of American’s leased aircraft are older MD-80 planes, according to data from Ascend, and according to Harvey Miller, one of the attorneys for American, those leased aircraft will be returned to the lessors. American Eagle, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMR holds another 245 aircraft. The bankruptcy code essentially gives American 60 days to reach preliminary deals with leasing companies. AMR said its filing for bankruptcy protection would help the company cut costs and emerge more competitive, having lost more than $10-billion since 2001.

There is a large white frame house in a grass field on Vancouver Island, immediately beside the Island Highway at Cobble Hill. Although the field is in the shape of a dog’s leg, the owner of the house operated a Republic Seabee amphibious flying boat in and out of that pasture. The Seabee was needed for transport because the owner headed a logging company with leases around the Cowichan Valley—Norie Brothers Logging. Both Frank Norie and his wife held private pilot’s licenses and the family business was well served by the couple’s ability to travel from their home to the logging camps via that little Seabee. Norrie soon became fascinated with the idea of using a helicopter in his business. He took the required flying lessons and received his rotary wing endorsement. Once Norie received his helicopter license, he bought a Bell 47 single engine, light helicopter—similar to the ones used in the MASH TV series. Since he lived only 15 minutes by air to Victoria Airport where Vancouver Helicopters (VIH) was located, he took his aircraft there for servicing. Like the man who “liked the company so much [he] bought it,” Norrie did something similar. Aircraft manufacturer Bill Boeing owned shares in VIH, which he wanted to sell because of other interests. Norie purchased Boeing’s shares in 1975 and some years later became the president of VIH. During those years VIH experienced considerable growth, expanding in size, number aircraft serviced and employees. It would ultimately become one of the largest helicopter companies in Canada. Something else had happened along the way. VIH’s chief pilot, Bruce Payne, had trained Norie’s brother Henry and his son, Norie’s wife and their 16-year-old old son Ken, who would, ultimately, head up the company’s heli-logging operations. Frank Norie passed away on March 31, 2008. Jack Schofield has written several books on coastal aviation and has adapted his first two books to a screenplay for TV.

Frank O’Neill, past president and CEO of YVR Airport Services, presents BCIT airport operations student Jastine Chen with the inaugural Frank O’Neill Award for Excellent in Airport Operations. As a key economic generator for the region, Vancouver International Airport employs 23,600 people at close to 400 businesses that operate on Sea Island. Employees with aviation specialties are drawn from many sources, including local universities and colleges; BCIT Aerospace & Technology Campus in Richmond is just one of the specialist colleges for aviation training. Vancouver Airport Authority has supported BCIT for many years, through donations and scholarships as well as YVR employees contributing their expertise to the classroom in a number of different programs including aircraft maintenance, and airport operations and marketing and tourism. In November, Brett Patterson, Vancouver Airport Authority’s director of airside operations, and Frank O’Neill, past president and CEO of YVR Airport Services, presented the 2011 Airport Authority scholarship awards to three deserving students who have reached a level of excellence in their studies this year.

The inaugural Frank O’Neill Award for Excellence in Airport Operations was presented by O’Neill to Jastine Chen, a first year airport operations student. This $2,500 award is donated by Vancouver Airport Authority in recognition of O’Neill’s valuable contribution to aviation—a career that ranged from working as an air traffic controller in Toronto, to Transport Canada in Ottawa, to YVR’s airport manager and most recently past president of YVR Airport Services. In addition, O’Neill implemented the Sense of Place concept using Northwest Coast Aboriginal art to establish an identifiable brand for YVR. The Green Coat volunteer customer service program was also introduced by O’Neill in 1989. Patterson also attended the awards ceremony and presented two further Vancouver Airport Authority Awards— one to Airport Operations first-year student Christopher Fitzpatrick, as well as the Pat Plouffe Memorial Award in Airport Operations to Joanne Hsu.

being restored for flight. “Although there is much work to do, this is a pivotal point in the restoration of the historically significant [Spitfire Mk IX] aircraft,” said Rob Fleck, president of VWC. “The delivery of these wings is just one more step toward realizing the dream we had when we first acquired the aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force two years ago.” The Comox Air Force Museum, owned by the Department of National Defence (DND), wished to see the fighter become airworthy once again and sought out VWC, a Canadian organization know for its restoration of vintage aircraft. The Spitfire carries the squadron code Y2-K and is now known as the Roseland Spitfire in dedication to Arnold ‘Rosey’ Roseland. During his service with 442 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Roseland flew Spitfire Y2-K on 65 occasions.

All 16 aircraft of the Vintage Wings collection have been dedicated to a Canadian aviator who flew the type either in training or in combat. Roseland, a much respected flight leader and hero of the Second World War, is one such aviator who perished while flying a Spitfire on a support mission for Canadian ground forces. VWC is a public charitable organization, operating at the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport. The organization’s mission is to provide education about Canada’s rich aviation heritage and commemorate its veterans. Founded by high-tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Potter in 2005, the organization is governed by an independent board of directors including Chris Hadfield, Canadian Space Agency astronaut and commander of the next mission to the International Space Station.

and Australia. CEV designed and built an electricpowered aircraft vehicle in 2000 for PLH Aviation Services in Los Angeles, California. Since then, PLH has successfully commissioned and operated 16 electric aircraft refuelling units. The new 55-horsepower AC electric motor and automatic transmission vehicle can travel at up to 40 kilometres per hour and run for 45 kilometres without being recharged. During off-peak times, battery

Cargojet: Dedicated to cargo and customer service

Business Profile

By Gordon Stewart

What does military equipment, Cold Play, 12 Cavalier horses, blueberries, cherries, sea food, Agnes the Polar Bear and a 727 full of popcorn have in common? Answer: They have all flown on Cargojet aircraft. In this time of fierce competition and just-in-time inventory control, air cargo is critical to business and commerce. This is especially true in Canada, where large geographical distances dictate that urgent goods are usually shipped by air. To meet critical, time-sensitive deadlines, companies rely on a number of transportation specialists such as freight forwarders, brokers, courier companies and logistics specialists. But on whom or

what do these cargo specialists rely? At YVR, Cargojet is both the answer and the solution. As a leading overnight cargo airline, Cargojet, based at Ontario’s Hamilton International Airport, uses a fleet of 13 aircraft to deliver its customers’ goods on time. The fleet of Boeing 200 series 767, 757 and 727 freighters fly 15,000 flight legs per year, hauling more than 381,000 kilograms of cargo per night to 12 major cities in Canada and more than 50 international destinations. Connections are made through Cargojet’s special interline agreements with 44 of the world’s most successful international airlines. Gord Johnston, Cargojet’s vice presi-

dent international development, is pleased with the company’s impressive growth. “We continue to look for new business opportunities at home and abroad,” said Johnston. “Many companies around the world have called on us to provide a Canadian solution and we have always risen to the challenge. We are looking forward to expanding our business in 2012.” In addition to helping its customers meet urgent deadlines on a scheduled basis, Cargojet operates charters to respond to situations that require a dedicated aircraft. When the rock band Cold Play needed to get their equipment from Phoenix, Arizona to Liverpool, England, Cargojet made the connection. The same was true for Agnes the Polar Bear, whose movie career required an appearance in France. When live animal transportation is required, Cargojet provides modifications to its aircraft configuration and allows the animal’s handler to travel onboard to reassure both the animals and their owners. As the season dictates, Cargojet’s cargo holds can be filled with lamb and live eels from New Zealand or seafood and fruit from British Columbia. When inventory or assembly line shortages occur or where large capacity loads are required, companies find it more economical to charter an aircraft than miss a deadline or shut down production. As a result, Cargojet’s perishable freight—all of which is scheduled by in-house staff—has grown in 10 years from zero to 18,100 kilograms per day. Making it happen in Western Canada Lyle Gibson, a 40-year veteran of the aviation fraternity and Cargojet’s general manager, Western Canada, started his career with Canadian Pacific Airways followed by two Canadian charter airlines, Worldways and Wardair. He has seen the evolution and growth of the company from Canair Cargo, Royal Cargo and Canada 3000 Cargo through to present-day Cargojet. Under his leadership, Western Canada is one of Cargojet’s fastest growing regions and the advertising slogan: “We work at night so you can work during the day,” explains why Gibson starts his day at 6am and doesn’t go to bed until the last report of all “his” aircraft have been filed late in the evening. “We are extremely proud of our team at YVR, who ensure we meet our on-

These attributes are the founda-

tion of his career and are the reason for his success in life.” The accolades for Gibson are also a true reflection of Cargojet’s customerfocused philosophy. While the maple leaf and globe together with the Cargojet name on the company’s logo defines its Canadian and international customer service, Gibson embodies its people-oriented philosophy, which is widely recognized by the YVR cargo community’s many clients.

Airbus takes another step towards greener aviation

While LaGuardia is the smallest of the New York metropolitan area’s three primary commercial airports, it is popular because of its central location and proximity to Manhattan. WestJet has successfully bid for eight slot pairs at New York’s LaGuardia airport, located on Long Island. A slot pair is defined as one arriving flight and one departing flight. The auction, held by the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), provided select airlines in Canada and the United States the unique opportunity to bid on two slot packages for LaGuardia airport and one for Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport. “We are very pleased with our successful bid,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO. “Our growth plans, in which increased business travel in the

East figures prominently, includes New York City, Canada’s largest international business market and we look forward to providing our guests with frequent, year-round service to the core of the Big Apple.” LaGuardia airport has been an icon in New York for 70 years and has served as a gateway for more than 23-million travellers last year. WestJet is finalizing the transaction according to FAA requirements while working to secure U.S. customs pre-clearance from Canada. Details on schedule information will be announced at a later date.

Offered as an option, Sharklets are specially designed to improve the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320 Family of aircraft and result in an additional 3.5 per cent reduction in fuel burn over the classic wingtip fence already fitted on A320s. Airbus has completed the first flight test of the Sharklet wingtip devices on the company’s A320 development aircraft. Sharklets are approximately 2.5-metres tall and will replace the aircraft’s current wingtip fence. Offered as an option on new-build aircraft, Sharklets have been specially designed for the Airbus A320 Family to reduce fuel burn by up to an additional 3.5 per cent, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. Airbus forecasts the world’s single-aisle airliner fleet to double to more than 23,000 aircraft by 2030, with an average annual fleet growth of 3.4 per cent. This expansion will require around 19,200 new single-aisle aircraft deliveries for replacement and growth.

Double-digit growth of North American passenger fleet predicted by 2030

According to a recently released Airbus Global Market Forecast (GMF), Canada and the U.S. will require 5,901 new passenger aircraft of more than 100 seats between now and 2030. In that same time period, there will be a need for 414 new freighter aircraft. The total of 6,315 new aircraft deliveries has an estimated value of $648-billion. While the growth rate of the North American market is less dramatic than in some expanding regions of the world such as China and India, Canada and the U.S. have the highest percentage of existing aircraft that will need to be replaced in the coming decades. Forty-one per cent of the aircraft currently in service in North America will need to be replaced over the next 20 years—greater than in any other region of the world. The Airbus GMF predicts that the market for passenger aircraft in North America will grow by 66 per cent over the next two decades. The growth for dedicated freighters in the region is even greater, with a growth rate in the same period of some 80 per cent. Globally, by 2030, some 27,800 new aircraft valued at $3.5-trillion will be required to satisfy the robust future market demand.

Tourism Vancouver’s “Invite the World” campaign is designed to market Vancouver to the world.

Yuletide travel tips For many travellers making their way home for holiday festivities or escaping winter for warm and sunny climes there will be flights to catch, security lines to tolerate and potential travel delays to endure. Making it to your destination of choice in the last weeks of the calendar year and the first of the New Year can sometimes prove to be overwhelming. To help travellers navigate their commute during the Yuletide season, Cheapflights, an international media network that helps more than 11-million visitors a month find top travel deals, has created a Top 10 holiday travel tip sheet. For procrastinators Book last-minute. Typically travellers are encouraged to book flights between 60 and 90 days before an anticipated date of departure. That ideal time frame has now passed. Lucky for procrastinators, airlines are offering flash sales and the best is possibly yet to come. Start scanning now, as December bookers could save the most on holiday flights this season. Fly on the holiday. Flight searches by date often tell an interesting but consistent story: flying midweek, early in the day or late at night saves travellers

cash. The same holds true on holidays. Many times the lowest fares go to travellers willing to fly on the holiday itself, whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Eve. For flexible flyers holiday cheer can also be experienced in-flight as some airlines are particularly festive. Lufthansa in Christmases past has cooked traditional German meals and decked cabins with wreaths and decorations so passengers and flight crews can share in the celebration. For gift givers Baggage. In an era of increasing baggage fees, it’s best to show up to the airport with as little to check as possible. Ship gifts. If you receive gifts that do not fit in your carry-on, you may want to ship via a delivery company. Do the math a week before to see what will cost less: a tracked package or an extra bag. If it’s the latter, remember to leave gifts unwrapped so security can easily access the contents. Pack an empty suitcase. If the price is right, bringing an extra piece of luggage can be a frugal decision. Then, when it’s time to transport the gifts home, you’ll have an empty suitcase to fill. Either pack a fold-up duffel in your luggage or bring a separate bag if it means you won’t

have to pay extra baggage fees. First calculate what it will cost to ship your gifts home, then plan and pack accordingly. Peruse duty-free. Over the holidays, international flyers have the opportunity to savour their layovers in the

WESTERNDRIVER.COM

Travel Talk

duty-free shops, where high-end products go for everyday prices in airports around the globe. Shop tax-free on your way out or on your way home. Remember if you’re connecting in the U.S. from certain international destinations, liquids purchased at duty-free have to be checked before the domestic leg of your flight. For mile collectors Save the miles. Miles get tricky around the holidays, especially since low points’ seats for the most popular travel dates sell out quickly. Additionally, some airlines implement blackout dates. Accumulated miles, whether through an airline or a credit card, are used most economically either when travel plans are booked early or a traveller has flexibility with their itinerary. Save the points during the holidays unless you find a great flight deal.

Final thoughts Invest in hand sanitizer. For many travellers, the most wonderful time of the year can also be the one with the most sniffles. Pack plenty of hand sanitizer to help fend off germs and stock up on chewable vitamin Cs or your vitamins of choice. Plan ahead to avoid delays. If possible, avoid connections when booking flights, even if it means paying a little more. If a connection is a must, then ensure there’s a long enough layover in case your first flight is late to land. On the day of travel, get to the airport much earlier than you would during a less busy time of year. If you have to wait in a line-up, take a deep breath, relax, be patient and enjoy your travel during the holidays.

Canadian government acts to improve air safety The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, has proposed new regulations that would require private and commercial airplanes with six or more passenger seats to be equipped with an alert system known as the terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS). TAWS provides acoustic and visual alerts to flight crews, giving the flight crew sufficient time to take evasive action when the path of their aircraft is predicted to collide with terrain, water or obstacles—a situation that can occur when visibility is low or the weather is poor. These types of accidents often happen when pilots are unaware of the danger

until it is too late. The risk is even greater for small aircraft, which fly further into remote wilderness or mountainous areas but are not currently required to have the same proximity warning equipment as large airliners. Canada’s Transportation Safety Board also recommends the wider use of TAWS to help pilots assess their proximity to terrain. The proposed regulations comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards and help harmonize Canadian regulations more closely with those of other aviation authorities, including those in the United States and European Union.

The Atlas V rocket carrying NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity and the CSA’s APXS launched in a plume of fire and smoke from Cape Canaveral last month. APXS will determine the chemical composition of rocks and soil on Mars. Photo: courtesy of NASA The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is Mars-bound once again with the launch of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida last month. The mission carries a Canadian science instrument known as the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), which will probe the chemistry of rocks and soils on Mars to help determine if the Red Planet ever was, or could still be today, an environment able to support microbial life. “Canada’s contribution to this mission is a tremendous showcase of technological innovation,” said the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency. “Thanks to our skilled scientists, Canadian science and space technology

is once again moving beyond the bounds of Earth’s orbit, to the frontiers of international space exploration.” The size of a small car, MSL’s rover— named Curiosity—is a mobile geology lab equipped with the largest, most advanced suite of science instruments ever to land on Mars. Curiosity will analyze samples on site to determine whether Mars was ever a habitable planet, characterize the climate and geology of Mars, and pave the way for human exploration. APXS is one of 10 science instruments on Curiosity. It will determine the chemical composition of Martian rocks and soil samples to establish their geological history, identify possible alterations by water and perform sample triage for the on-board laboratory instruments. It will be used

regularly throughout the mission, which is planned to last one full Martian year (687 Earth days). The Canadian Space Agency is investing $17.8-million in the design, building, primary operations and scientific support of APXS. The CSA managed the development and building of the instrument with MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. as the prime contractor for APXS. The University of Guelph provided the scientific direction for the design and engineering support during the development, calibrated the APXS instrument and will lead the science operations for the instrument. Components of APXS were tested in Vancouver, Toronto, Brampton, Guelph, Ottawa and Montreal.

Air Cadets partner with Canadian Space Agency The Air Cadet League of Canada (ACLC) has signed an agreement with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to work together to encourage young people to choose careers in aviation and aerospace. The partnership is expected to secure the long-term value and sustainability of the ACLC as well as the growth of the Canadian aerospace and aviation industry as the CSA will support the current Air Cadet training programs by providing subject matter expertise on space-focused learning products. These training programs will provide aerospace and aviation industry affiliates with a pool of more than 25,000 youth who are already interested in aviation from which to draw prospective recruits. “The CSA is a stellar organization and natural partner in focusing our Air Cadets for a potential career in aviation and aerospace,” said ACLC president Bob Robert. “Access to CSA’s material will complement and enrich our already popular Air Cadet Program elements on Space.” To learn more about the Air Cadet League of Canada, visit aircadetleague. com. Every air cadet has the chance to participate in flight activities and some top senior cadets may even earn a scholarship to obtain their private pilot’s licence.

CBAA applauds cross-border action plan Earlier this month, the Canadian government issued a joint press release with the United States on the Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness, which focuses on four areas of cooperation: addressing threats early; facilitating trade, economic growth and jobs; integrating cross-border law enforcement; and improving critical infrastructure and cyber-security. “We are pursuing an ambitious global trade agenda, while at the same time ensuring enhanced access to the United States, our largest and most important trading partner,” said Prime Minister Harper. “Together, these agreements represent the most significant step forward in CanadaU.S. cooperation since the North American Free Trade Agreement.” The Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA), with a membership of approximately 600 companies and organizations, including operators, man-

agement companies and suppliers to the aviation community, applauded the shared Canada-United States action plan. “The action plan is very important to our members,” said Sam Barone, president and CEO of the Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA). “It creates a more efficient border and less regulatory complexity, which will better facilitate frequent business aviation travel between Canada and the United States. We commend the Canadian government’s leadership and efforts on this agreement with the United States. Business aviation has the ability to make face-to-face transportation possible in the competitive global marketplace. [These agreements] will make it easier for this to happen.” Prime Minister Harper has said the government will consult with Parliament and Canadians to keep them informed of progress on the implementation of the action plans.

fleets with new Boeing 777 and Embraer aircraft. The carrier has also refurbished its existing fleet to offer all customers personal entertainment systems at each seat, fleet-wide on North American and international routes. Fleet-wide amenities include digital in-seat monitors with touch-screen controls offering hundreds of hours of audio and video on-demand programming, standard in-seat power within reach of every customer, lie-flat beds in Executive First suites, Air Canada’s international business class service, and the ability to collect and redeem Aeroplan miles.

Canada pledges to help more refugees In a recent speech to the United Nations Canada’s Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney pledged that Canada will continue its tradition of helping the world’s persecuted. During his speech to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Minister Kenney committed, for each of the next five years, to contribute to an international pool of resettlement spaces that could be drawn upon in times of extreme urgency such as what happened when thousands of refugees in Libya had to flee. “Canada will make available 200 of our existing resettlement spaces, which represents 10 per cent of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) request for emergency situations,” said Minister Kenney. “Canada is committed to providing protection to those who need it most, which is also why Canada has expanded its resettlement pro-

gram by 20 per cent.” Minister Kenney said that Canada will also use its resettlement program to respond to the protection needs of women and girls, and victims of persecution due to sexual orientation. To underscore this commitment, Canada is responding to the UNHCR’s request to resettle a group of women who are victims of sexual violence in Haiti. Canada will resettle 40 women and their dependents or 20 per cent of the UNHCR’s request. Minister Kenney also noted the disturbing increase in the number of asylum claims from European countries. Canada receives more asylum claims from the democratic European Union than from Africa or Asia. The Minister called on countries to work together with Canada’s partners through the UNHCR to address such flows. Minister Kenney also confirmed Canada’s commitment to creating an

Office of Religious Freedom to promote and protect freedom of religion and belief, building on past Canadian efforts and consistent with core Canadian values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. “It is our common duty to defend the rights of the afflicted and to give voice to the voiceless,” said Minister Kenney. “Canada is uniquely placed to protect and promote religious freedom around the world. We are a country of many ethnicities and religions, but we all share one humanity—one of tolerance, one of acceptance, one of peace and security.” Canada has one of the most generous immigration and refugee systems in the world, settling approximately one in 10 of the world’s resettled refugees—more than any other industrialized country in the world after the United States. Since World War II, Canadians have provided refuge to more than 1-million refugees.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Gewürztraminer Gewürztraminer (pronounced ga-VERTZ-trah-mee-ner) is probably one of the hardest wine names to pronounce but very easy to drink. Gewürztraminer grapes are a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a white wine grape as opposed to the blue to black-skinned varieties commonly referred to as red wine grapes. This grape variety is grown predominantly in France, Germany, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, where the climate leans to the cooler side and the flavours have an opportunity to concentrate. In Canada, the regions where Gewürztraminer grapes are grown include Vancouver Island and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia as well Ontario’s wine regions on the north shore of Lake Erie and Prince Edward County and the Niagara Peninsula. Gewürztraminer can be found in dry or sweet varieties and are generally best if enjoyed sooner rather than later post-bottling. Flavours qualities include honey, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, apricot, pear, citrus and rose. Food Parings: Gewürztraminer tends to pair well with Asian dishes, zesty-flavoured dishes and fleshy, fatty (oily) game. It goes well with smoked salmon.

AirCare repairs reduce pollution

Car Maintenance

By Bernie Pawlik Some B.C. drivers remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the province’s AirCare program, which requires drivers to demonstrate their vehicle has recently passed an emissions test before they are permitted to renew their auto insurance. Air Care’s purpose is to keep these toxic pollutants to a minimum and it does a great job of doing so by identifying vehicles which produce excessive emissions. The most toxic pollutants for the environment are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen emissions . Older vehicles that are properly maintained minimize the production of these pollutants. As a licensed auto mechanic whose company fixes several cars and trucks each month, I have observed that fully 90 per cent of AirCare repairs produce huge results. One case in point, AirCare repairs performed on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee resulted in significantly less toxins being released into the atmosphere (see chart below). The 1.6790 oxides of nitrogen that were being produced caused the vehicle to fail its AirCare test. After being repaired, the reductions in emissions are even greater than the average score needed for a vehicle to pass its AirCare test.

Before repairs this 1995 Jeep Cherokee emitted the following amounts of pollution every 100 kilometres: • 40 grams of hydrocarbons • 664 grams of carbon monoxide • 168 grams of oxides of nitrogen After repairs this vehicle will now be able to drive: • 5.7 times farther (571 kilometres) for the same level of hydrocarbons • 19 times farther (1,900 kilometres) for the same level of carbon monoxide • 83 times farther (8,300 kilometres) for the same oxides of nitrogen pollutants. These pollution figures are not unique to the Jeep Cherokee in the example above, fully 90 per cent of AirCare repairs reduce emissions and significantly reduce air pollution.

Nissan NV Series designed to help businesses run better Introduced in spring, 2011, the Nissan NV (Nissan Van) Series started with a ground-up design—from its rugged ladder frame to the roof rack mounting brackets on the top of the innovatively conceived and styled body. Yet the all-new Nissan NV also has the advantage of Nissan’s commercial vehicle heritage, covering 75 years and more than 75 per cent of the global commercial vehicle (CV) market. “The new kid on the block, as it turns out, is also a long-time player in the global commercial vehicle market,” said Allen Childs, president, Nissan Canada. “We bring a more than seven-decade tradition of durability, quality and reliability to our products. At the same time, we’ve taken a fresh look at every aspect of the CV business including styling, powertrain, interiors, cost of operation and ownership, dealership sales and service operations and, most importantly, real world customer needs.” The first production models in Nissan’s new North American CV line-up are the 2012 Nissan NV1500, NV2500 (as shown) and NV3500. They are available with a choice of 4.0-litre V6 and 5.6-litre V8 engines and in two body styles, Standard Roof (all models) and High Roof (NV2500 and NV3500 only)—High Roof models offer stand-up walkthrough/work cargo area capability. “We’ve invested more than five years researching the comfort, style and smart functionality demands that will enable business owners to accomplish more throughout their day,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, commercial vehicles and fleet, Nissan North America. The NV planning team employed a wide range of innovative customer research methodologies and met with large fleet owners and managers, small business owners, aftermarket suppliers and converters and rode along with owners of competitive vehicles. “The NV is one of the most researched projects ever in the history of Nissan,” said Castelli. “We touched the market at every point possible, with the findings reflected in every aspect of the final NV design.” Comfortable seating and standing In developing the new Nissan NV, one of the overarching goals was to combine pickup truck-like comfort, interior amenities and drivability with a cargo van’s capacity and security. “Looking at the CV market in recent years, there’s been a migration of van users to light-duty pickups due to the lack of comfort, image and dependability of the current outdated van platforms,” said Castelli. “Yet many of these truck owners admit they need a van for weather protection, security and the convenience of a tall roof van to carry large items or equipment. With the Nissan NV, [they get] the best of both worlds.” The Nissan NV interior starts with wide front doors for easy ingress and egress, supportive bucket seating with extensive adjustability, large armrests and a truck-like driving position with ample legroom and foot room. The available centre console (removable) provides a range of integrated storage features, while the fold-down passenger seat—unique to this vehicle segment—adds worktable functionality and enhances the cab’s feeling of openness. Another major contributor to the pickup-like cab is the absence of the traditional CV engine “doghouse” that intrudes into the cab due to the setback engine placement. The Nissan NV utilizes a conventional truck engine layout with the engine and transmission located ahead of the firewall/A-pillar. This not only frees up space under the instrument panel and between the seats, it also provides easy

under-hood access to the entire engine for routine service and maintenance. The NV’s ample cargo area offers as much as 3, 820 millimetres of floor length (without the centre console) and 1,783 millimetres of maximum width. NV Standard Roof models offers up to 1,417 millimetres of cargo area height, among the tallest in class, while the NV High Roof provides a maximum 1,953 millimetres of cargo room height—enough for most users to move about the cargo area while standing up straight. “Standard Roof NV models are designed to fit in most garages or go through most car washes and fast food drive-through lanes,” said Castelli. “But for so many businesses, the added cargo capacity and the ability to stand up and work inside the High Roof NV will be a price-

The result is a clean, practical and comfortable workspace for a wide variety

of professions and businesses.” The NV also offers a full-length cargo area inner panel to protect the outer walls from dents and dings from the inside, and there are multiple weld-nut attachment points for shelving and racks, which require no sheet metal drilling. In addition, the NV’s nearly vertical sidewalls maximize the usable cargo space, accommodating common aftermarket storage systems, as well as a bulkhead behind the driver. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2012 Nissan NV model range ranges from $30,998 - $36,978 for Standard Roof models and $34,988 $39,668 for High Roof models.
