The winter sports season is here and for many that means heading to the local mountains to enjoy fun and games in the snow. However, for Braydon Luscombe, the winter season means business –a heavy travel schedule for competing in para-alpine races across North America and Europe. Sponsored by Vancouver Airport Authority since 2009, Luscombe, a former prospect athlete with the 2010 Legacies Now, Growing Champions program, has moved up to the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team (CPAST). He competes in the standing category for para-alpine athletes as his right leg was amputated after contracting an illness as a child. His natural talent, dedication and solid race finishes resulted in Alpine Canada Alpin selecting him for the 2011-2012 Senior National team. Luscombe has been training throughout the year with his fellow national team mates in preparation for his inaugural season to represent Canada on the international circuit. At 19, Luscombe displays an impressive level of maturity and commitment to his craft. He trains on snow approximately 100 days per year, 35 of those being race starts.
With YVR as his travel sponsor, Luscombe receives funding to help with the expense of the sport he loves. He has already travelled this season to Chile, Switzerland, the U.S. and Alberta. When asked what he is most excited about this season, Luscombe said: “I am stoked for my first year at the Senior National level. I had a great slalom run in my first Nor-Am race of the year at Copper Mountain (Colorado) with a 3rd place finish. I am really looking forward to the rest of the season.” Luscombe will hit the slopes seeking more podium finishes at Kimberley and Panorama in B.C., as well as New Hampshire and Colorado in the U.S. and the Canadian Nationals in Quebec. Travelling from race to race with the team takes a great deal of organization, especially with the equipment these elite athletes require. There are 13 members of the team, six of whom are from British Columbia. Luscombe, from Duncan, B.C., often travels through YVR. “YVR has got to be one of the easiest airports to travel through on my journeys, one path from point A to point B,”

Each team member is responsible for transporting their own equipment, so YVR’s oversized baggage carts (introduced for the 2010 Winter Games) come in handy to accommodate the multiple pairs of skis, poles, boots and team gear. Luscombe is looking to improve on his already impressive record. His favourite
discipline is slalom, in which he achieved 2nd place at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last season. With his 3rd place finish in Colorado this year, he has certainly made a great start. It is hoped that having YVR’s logo emblazoned on his helmet will help him fly downhill to more successes throughout the season.

Last month, Cathay Pacific’s brand new 747-8 Freighter touched down at YVR for the first time, an encouraging sign for increased exports between Canada and Asia. The 747-8 Freighter is the world’s longest cargo aircraft measuring 73.3metres and holds up to 134 tonnes of cargo—16
per cent more volume than the airline’s predecessor, the 747-400. Not only does the aircraft hold more cargo, it is a leader in environmental performance. The 747-8 Freighter is more fuel efficient, produces fewer emissions and is 30 per cent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to the latest innovations in aircraft

engine technology. Cathay Pacific is the first Asia Pacific airline to take delivery of 747-8 Freighters and currently operates three weekly freighter trips between Vancouver and Hong Kong, including cargo on the airline’s twice-daily passenger service. The new freighter will become the workhorse
of the airline’s cargo operations to and from North America into destinations throughout China and Asia. With its increased volume, better fuel efficiency and reduced noise, Cathay Pacific’s new aircraft offers a welcome boost for trade between Vancouver and Asia.
Changes to airfare advertising The Government of Canada has announced a timeline for proceeding with regulations requiring Canadian air carriers to include all fees and taxes in their advertised prices. Clause 27 of the Act to Amend the Canada Transportation Act, which was passed in Parliament in June 2007, required carriers to include all extra fees, surcharges and taxes in the advertised ticket price. However, Canadian carriers have

maintained that mandating them to advertise the full cost of a ticket is unfair, given that some foreign carriers could continue to advertise their base fares online, where Canadian travellers could purchase their tickets. Since then, U.S. and European Union governments have moved to all-in airfare advertising. The United States has also further strengthened regulations requiring all-in airfare advertising that are scheduled to come into effect on January 24, 2012.
Aircraft models, gifts and clothing
Regulations, which will include consultations with stakeholders, will now be drafted requiring Canadian airlines to advertise the full price of airfares, including any airport taxes and other fees, by Christmas 2012. While the provinces of Ontario and Quebec all ready require travel agencies to include all fees and surcharges in their advertised prices, most other provinces require no such provision for travel agencies.

Airport Authority staff help Quest distribute donated holiday hampers. Last month, SkyTalk readers learned about how the YVR community was giving back for the holidays through donation more than 500 food-filled hampers to Quest Food Exchange. Further to the donation, several waves of Airport Authority and HMSHost staff took time to work with Quest on organizing and handing out the hampers at Quest’s Vancouver store. In some cases, hampers were hand delivered to homes or community groups, providing a great opportunity for staff to meet the people they were assisting. Five hundred hours of time was donated by the YVR community to help Quest’s clients enjoy a hearty meal over the holidays, consisting of turkey and all the trimmings. In addition, $11,000 was raised from the annual Christmas Tree sponsorships and contest donations, which
was used to purchase turkeys for each hamper donated. The final tally of holiday hampers donated was an impressive 520. Vancouver Airport Authority staff initiated the campaign, opening up the opportunity for many YVR businesses to take part. An estimated 400 participants contributed to the campaign including YVR’s volunteer Green Coats, staff from HMSHost, ICE Currency Exchange, Fortune Way Group, Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, as well as a number of other YVR businesses. Feedback from all involved was extremely positive, with many participants saying the experience was inspirational and rewarding for both donors and receivers. Visit questoutreach.org, if you are interested in helping Quest Food Exchange or would like more information.
Pre-conditioned air units (PCAs) at YVR provide ventilation, cooling, dehumidifying, filtering and heating of air supplied to parked aircraft. Auxiliary power units (APUs) significantly impact overall air quality on aircraft and allow the cabins to be comfortable while passengers are boarding before the aircraft’s engines are started. As part of the Airport Authority’s commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives, the organization’s Environment Department worked closely with Transport Canada in 2010 and 2011 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at aircraft gates and recently reported on the results. With a funding grant from Transport Canada, the Airport Authority installed pre-conditioned air units at six aircraft gates. These units—called PCAs—enable airlines the opportunity to replace their onboard electricity and compressed air generators that operate using fuel, with an on-ground electric unit. When an aircraft’s engine is turned
off on the ground, auxiliary power units—called APUs—generate electricity and compressed air for the stationed aircraft. The use of APUs significantly impacts overall air quality and contributes five per cent of the airport’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Harnessing the latest technology such as the PCA units, which provide cooling or heating while also filtering the aircraft’s air when on the ground, significantly reduced emissions at YVR. Not only have the PCA units resulted in less maintenance issues, airlines were able to save a monthly average of approximately 6,600 litres of fuel.

Over the past 15 years, the Lotto booth at YVR’s Domestic Terminal Building (DTB), Level 3 has sold many winning tickets to travellers and airport employees. For a very lucky five purchasers, the payout has exceeded $1-million, including one at $6.2-million and three at more than $2-million. Jalil Khan, an employee at YVR, purchased a tickets a few months ago and won a life-changing $1.5-million. For Lotto booth owner Naz Karmali, who considers the YVR outlet as a lucky booth, it’s as much a thrill to sell smaller winning tickets consistently as it is to know that their booth has sold a large winner. “We also own a Lotto booth at Metrotown, but I can say that after all these
years the YVR booth is a lucky booth,” said Karmali. “We always have at least one big winner every year and lots of other winners every month.” Whether you call it luck or good fortune, you can’t win if you don’t have a ticket, so stop and see Naz or her assistant Riteshni to purchase a ticket. The DTB Lotto booth is open every day from 7am to 7pm.

Search and rescue circa 1930 By Jack Schofield Back in the early days of flying in Canada, no one gave any thought to search and rescue. Flying wasn’t a perfect science and radios weren’t standard equipment, so if someone didn’t show up on their word-of-mouth estimated arrival time, they were given a wide margin of time before anyone worried and even more time before a search was launched—indeed if a search was ever launched. Take the case of Paddy Burke, a wellknown B.C. aviator who flew CF-AMX, a Junkers C13 floatplane. Burke flew for a pioneer Vancouver outfit called Air-Land Manufacturing Ltd., which in 1930 occupied the Keg Restaurant in Richmond B.C. It wasn’t the Keg in those days, but in fact a hangar with a seaplane ramp into the north arm of the Fraser River. Burke disappeared on October 10, 1930, on a trip from Atlin, B.C. to Lower Post in the Liard River district. On October 30, 1930, a pilot working in that area determined that Burke had made it to Lower Post and had taken off on the return trip to Atlin on October 11. This meant that Burke and his two passengers had been missing for 19 days. When Pat Renehan, an American pilot friend of Burke’s, heard the news, he flew his Lockheed Vega floatplane up from Seattle to Vancouver with the wheels loaded into the aircraft’s cabin. His plan was to fly up to Prince Rupert on floats then change over to wheel skis before flying to the search area to look for his friend. At the
time, the Liard River area was snowbound at below freezing temperatures. Renehan took off for Prince Rupert from YVR on October 27, 1930, accompanied by an aircraft engineer and a mining prospector—the latter professed to know the area from past prospecting trips. Renehan and his two passengers were never seen again. A search was mounted by two U.S. Navy flying boats from San Diego, which did not make it to the scene for several days due to bad weather. Those wheels that Renehan had loaded in the Vega’s cabin washed up much later 80 kilometres short of Prince Rupert. Four weeks after Burke first went missing, his wife sent a cryptic telegram to the Vancouver Sun newspaper asking if there wasn’t anyone interested enough to go out and look for her husband. This appeal pricked the conscience of the Vancouver flying community and three aircraft were assembled to initiate a search. The aircraft that departed on the search and rescue mission were a Fleetster, a Fairchild and a sister ship to Burke’s missing C13 Junkers. Almost immediately after take off, the Fleetster suffered a mechanical problem and crash landed in the bush with no loss of life. The Fairchild suffered the same fate a few kilometres later. The Junkers, CF-ALX, continued on its way with three very experienced airmen on board. Later, after departing from a refuelling stop at Prince George, it, too, disappeared. The Vancouver newspapers had a field day. It was suggested that flying in B.C.
B.C. Aviation History
The Junkers C13 CF-AMX taking off from the north arm of the Fraser River. The aircraft went missing on October 11, 1930. was like booking a deck chair on the Titanic. Meanwhile, back in Atlin and points north, a young pilot, Everett Wasson, flying for a mining company out of Treadwell Yukon, had been performing a lone search for the Burke aircraft. This intrepid pilot was also very sensible, taking with him a local woodsman who knew the area like the back of his hand. The two men per-

formed a thorough and systematic search from the air and also landed on the snowcovered terrain to search for signs Burke and his passengers. The two men found the plane undamaged, but frozen into the headwaters of the Liard River. It appeared that Burke had landed in too shallow water, which caused the floats on his aircraft to bottom on the riverbed. The holed floats had filled with water that soon froze solid. No sign of the pilot and his passengers was found, but at the site of their nearby camp inscribed on a tree was the message: “Left for Wolf Lake October 17—need food badly.” It was signed by Paddy, Bob and Emil. Wasson and his woodsman, Joe Walsh, found the three men 64 kilometres up the Liard River. Unfortunately, Paddy Burke was dead. He had died on November 20. After Burke’s death, the two survivors decided to stop hiking to Wolf Lake as they were starving and had little energy left to carry on. They made a camp out of their sleeping bags on the open icy ground. Twice, Wasson’s Bellanca flew over them
during his search, but the desperate men were not spotted. The two survivors mustered what energy they had left and gathered firewood. When they heard Wasson’s aircraft once more they lit the fire and the pilot spotted the smoke. Their three month ordeal was over. You might be asking what happened to CF-ALX, the sister ship to Burke’s Junkers, which disappeared out of Prince George? This is another saga of amazing survival, bull-headed officialdom and sheer guts by some very famous B.C. aviators. Tune in next week, as they used to say on radio, to hear the amazing story of the “Great Mush.” Footnote: This story of the search for Paddy Burke appeared in the April 1993 edition of BC Aviator magazine— forefather to Canadian Aviator—under the title, The Press and Paddy Burke. It was a long, two-part article, told by reprinting the extensive series of columns appearing back in the 1930 editions of the Vancouver Sun and the Vancouver Province newspapers, copies of which were made available.

aviation security regulations
The Government of Canada recently announced that it is taking steps to streamline the Canadian Aviation Security Regulations, making them as clear, userfriendly and efficient as possible while maintaining a high level of security. According to Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, the changes, which reflect extensive consultation with industry stakeholders, will further align Canadian regulations to meet International Civil Aviation Organization commitments. The Canadian Aviation Security Regulations 2012 will take a phasedin approach, beginning with the introduction of aviation security programs at airports. These programs contain elements for security management, including clear policy direction, an airport security awareness program, an airport security committee, defined security roles and responsibilities, and management of sensitive aviation security information.
While many of these systems and practices exist now, aviation security programs will formalize them and help industry manage and support aviation security in a comprehensive, integrated, coordinated and risk-based manner. “Canadian airports play a key role in aviation security,” said Daniel-Robert Gooch, president of the Canadian Airports Council. “Aviation security programs need to move away from a one-size fits all approach, adopt a risk-based approach to security, formalize the management of security, and set out clear roles and responsibilities among aviation security partners at an airport.” These changes, which will be seamless for travellers, are part of an ongoing review of Canada’s aviation security regulations by the federal government. This review is expected to include aviation security programs for other industry sectors, including air carriers, by 2015.

Arctic Air aims to heat up CBC-TV winter season
Adam Beach, shown alongside co-star Pascale Hutton, has put aside his Hollywood career to work on Arctic Air. (CBC) Starting this month CBC Television will air a new one-hour adventure series set in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Arctic Air is the story about a maverick airline and the unconventional family who runs it. Each episode will stand alone and feature a flying mission. On the ground, Bobby (Adam Beach, a Saulteaux First Nations native), the head-
strong business partner, struggles to save the airline from crashing financially while Mel (Kevin McNulty), the cantankerous co-owner, keeps his crew of pilots in the air. Caught in the crossfire is Mel’s hotshot pilot daughter Krista (Pascale Hutton). The pilots take on different assignments each week including delivering cagey prospectors to a top secret diamond
mining site, rescuing a group of scientists from a remote snowed-in research camp, water bombing a raging forest fire, escorting Japanese tourists to polar bear country and making sure they come back alive. Add to that airdropping an emergency generator to a community without heat or power and airlifting a pregnant mother and deliver her baby en route, and you have an exciting TV show. In addition to the lead characters, each year a fresh crop of new recruits will arrive in Yellowknife, drawn from everywhere around the world. Almost none of these new recruits have any real notion of what they are getting themselves into, and more than a few get right back on the next plane south. Those who stick around discover that the effort required to stay in Yellowknife will be nearly super-human. The ones who last are in for the adventure of a lifetime. CBC is giving away two prize packs to the Northwest Territories for viewers. For your chance to win, tune in to Arctic Air on January 10, 17 and 24 and watch for the code word during the show. After the show, head to cbc.ca/arcticair/ contest to enter the code word for your chance to win.

When the TV series Arctic Air begins this month on CBC-TV, viewers will be exposed to a city at the edge of the Arctic in the heart of the northern wilderness. Located on the northern shore of the beautiful Great Slave Lake, only 512 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, Yellowknife, the capital and largest city of Canada’s Northwest Territories (NWT), is home to about 20,000 people. Known for its outdoor recreation, midnight sun, aurora borealis and unusual blend of northern culture, Yellowknife boasts the highest household income per capita in Canada and one of the lowest unemployment rates. Of the 11 official languages of the NWT, five are spoken in significant numbers in Yellowknife: Chipewyan, Dogrib, South and North Slavey, English and French. In the Dogrib language, the city is known as Somba K’e (“where the money is”). Yellowknife’s economy is found in the abundance of minerals, oil and gas, all of which has provided dramatic economic impacts to the area. First settled in 1935, after gold was found in the area, Yellowknife soon became the centre of economic activity in the NWT, and became the capital city in 1967. When gold production began to wane, Yellowknife shifted from being a mining town to being a centre of government services in the 1980s. The discovery of diamonds north of Yellowknife in 1991 created the largest
staking rush in Canadian history and has since led to three operating diamond mines. Additionally, the city is home to cutting and polishing facilities and is the business service centre for diamond mine operations and development. One of Yellowknife’s most notable residents was Max Ward, whose roots began in the air charter business in the NWT. From a modest start with small biplanes as a passenger and cargo charter company, Ward expanded his airline into the more populous regions of Canada to become one of Canada’s largest international charter airlines, Wardair, from 1962 onwards. Rapid expansion during the early 1980s proved too much and in 1989 Wardair was sold to PWA Corporation and absorbed

Air Miles adds new expiry rule and instant redemption option
Starting this year, collectors in the Air Miles loyalty rewards program will have exactly five years to use their existing miles before they expire. All Air Miles accrued by January 1, 2012, will have to be redeemed by December 31, 2016, or they will disappear. All Air Miles collected after January 1, 2012, will also face a five-year limit. Air Miles collectors gather their miles by making qualified purchases from the program’s participating sponsors. Until now, the miles—redeemable for plane tickets, vacation packages and eligible merchandise, including electronic goods and gas—never carried an expiration date. According to Neil Everett, chief marketing officer for Air Miles, part of the company’s reason for making the change came from its need to better predict its finances. Loyalty programs need to show worth and profitability to their shareholders and carrying unused miles is a liability for the program. “We are a publicly traded company, and publicly traded companies have come under a lot of scrutiny,” he said. “We need a better ability to forecast redemption.” The announcement of the changes to

the program included information on a new instant-redemption feature called Air Miles Cash Rewards. The program, which begins in March, will allow collectors to instantly cash in their miles at participating retailers, using them towards purchases for items like gas and groceries. Under the new program, 95 reward miles will earn collectors $10 off while cashing out their purchases. Collectors will be able to redeem in $10 increments up to a maximum of $200 per day, including taxes. Air Miles collectors will not be able to transfer miles between the Miles Account and the Cash Rewards Account, nor will they be able to initially fund their Cash Rewards Account with existing miles. While instant redemption will not be available until March 2012, the rewards’ accounts can be set up right away so that collectors can start building up a cash balance to use when participating sponsors begin accepting the instant redemption. There are approximately 14-million active Air Miles cards in Canada, with 10-million of them being used at least once a month.

Airbus delivers 7,000th aircraft
Boeing reports increased production and sales in 2011
The cockpit of the Airbus A321 is similar to that of the A318, A319 and A320. This layout is also incorporated in the A330, A340, A380 and the upcoming A350. Last month, Airbus delivered its 7,000th aircraft to US Airways, one of Airbus’ biggest single airline clients. The delivery marked a new delivery milestone for Airbus, which continues to accelerate the production output of its single-aisle and widebody jetliners in meeting demand from a widening global customer base. The aircraft delivered was an A321, a member of the Airbus A320 Family, one of Airbus’ best-selling commercial air-
craft product lines—with more than 8,000 ordered by 340-plus customers around the globe. Overall, Airbus’ production output has been increasing since the company handed over its very first aircraft in May 1974: an A300B2. In March 1993, the 1,000th delivery landmark occurred with an A340-300, followed by the 2,000th handover in May 1999—which was also an A340-300. The 3,000th Airbus aircraft delivery
was an A320 provided in July 2002, while only three years later—in September 2005—an A330-300 became the 4,000th aircraft supplied to a customer. Just two years afterward, the 5,000th milestone was achieved in December 2007 with an A330-200. The 6,000th delivery occurred in January 2010, an A380 for Emirates airline. US Airways, which received the 7,000th delivery, utilizes the largest A320 Family inventory of any carrier fleet.
Boeing has dubbed 2012 as the ‘Year of the 737 MAX’. The MAX is a new family of Boeing aircraft being developed to replace the Boeing 737 Next Generation family.
Embraer’s new Legacy 500 executive jet Embraer’s Legacy 500 jet is the first of three prototypes being prepared for the next phase toward certification.
Last month, Embraer rolled out its newest executive jet, the midsize Legacy 500, from the production hangar at the company’s São José dos Campos headquarters, in Brazil. Embraer’s development and test engineers will now perform important ground tests and gather vital information, prior to the aircraft’s first flight, which is scheduled for the third quarter of 2012. This aircraft is the first of three prototypes that will be used in development, ground, flight and certification testing. There are more than 800 Embraer engi-
neers supporting these technical efforts. The aircraft will be certified by aviation authorities in key markets throughout the world. The Legacy 500 is powered by two Honeywell HTF 7500E turbofan engines. They will allow the aircraft to fly at a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.82, and to have a range of 5,600 kilometres with four passengers. The jet features the advanced Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion Integrated Flight Deck, as well as a modern, full fly-by-wire system with com-
plete flight envelope protection. The aircraft can accommodate up to 12 passengers in a stand-up cabin with 1.82-metre ceiling and a flat floor. Cabin design and amenities include four berthable (fully flat) seating pairs, Honeywell’s Ovation Select Cabin Management System, and internal and external baggage compartments. Premium seats are also available with leg rest, headrest with flexible wings, electrically actuated lumbar support, and massage and heating systems.

Cathay Pacific took delivery of its first 747-8 freighter in November 2011, making the Hong Kong-based airline the second carrier to take the aircraft. As part of its certification process, the 747-8F was cold weather tested in Canada’s Arctic in March 2011. Boeing has reported that in 2011 the company delivered 477 commercial airplanes and took in a total of 805 net orders. Those figures compare with 462 deliveries and 530 net orders in 2010, reflecting increased production and sales. The company ended the year with a backlog of 3,771 unfilled commercial orders. “This past year was one of the most exciting and important years in Boeing’s history,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “By placing record orders, our customers showed their confidence in our products and the quality of work performed by our employees. Our goal in 2012 is to ensure that 787 production is stable and reliable, while maintaining focus on execution as we deliver an increasing number of airplanes across all our programs.” The 777 once again led Boeing’s twin-aisle programs by setting a new record for orders in a single year at 200. Meanwhile, the launch of the 737 MAX spurred deals that resulted in more than 1,000 orders and commitments from 15 customers. “The 737 MAX, with its unmatched
efficiency, will be a key part of our customers’ future fleet needs. As our current commitments become firm orders and we add even more customers, I have no doubt that 2012 will be the ‘Year of the 737 MAX’,” said Albaugh. According to Boeing, on top of its backlog, there is a growing demand for its airplanes, which is driving production rate increases across most of the company’s airplane programs over the next two years. Most notably, 737 will increase production to 38 airplanes per month (35 per month rate begins this month), 777 to 8.3 airplanes per month (currently at 7 per month), and 787 to 10 airplanes per month (currently at 2.5 per month). Boeing Commercial Airplanes highlights in 2011 included: • First delivery of the 787 Dreamliner • First delivery of the 747-8 Freighter • Premiere and first flight of the 747-8 Intercontinental • Launch of the 737 MAX. All three aircraft, the 787, 747-8 Freighter and 747-8 Intercontinental, achieved certification in 2011. Boeing executives will give a production update on its new 787 Dreamliner later this month, when the company announces its earnings for 2011.

A select group of billionaires cast their fortunes skyward Left: Stratolaunch Systems is developing a revolutionary approach to space transportation: an air-launch system to provide orbital access to space with greater safety, cost-effectiveness and flexibility. Below: SpaceShipOne was developed by Mojave Aerospace Ventures (a joint venture between Paul Allen and Burt Rutan’s aviation company, Scaled Composites. On June 21, 2004, it made the first privately funded human spaceflight. On October 4, it won the US$10-million Ansari X Prize by reaching 100 kilometres in altitude twice in a twoweek period with the equivalent of three people on board and with no more than ten per cent of the non-fuel weight of the spacecraft replaced between flights. Development costs were estimated to be US$25 million, funded completely by Paul Allen.
The billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, and aerospace designer Burt Rutan, who among his many accomplishments built the first airplane to fly around the world without having to stop or refuel, have teamed up to provide a revolution in space transportation. Stratolaunch Systems, a new company backed by All en, is at the centre of the ambitious goal, which is to design and build an aircraft that will be larger and heavier than Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose, which flew just once in 1947. Once built, the massive carrier aircraft will be the size of two 747s, with a wingspan greater than the length of a football field—larger than the doubledecker Airbus A380, currently the biggest commercial passenger plane in production. It will weigh in at more than 540,000 kilograms including the fully fuelled launch vehicle. Power will be provided by six Boeing 747-400 jet engines, obtained from two used 747-400s that will be cannibal-
ized for engines, avionics, flight deck, landing gear and other proven systems that can be recycled to cut development costs. Once completed, the aircraft will be able to carry a 36-metre-long rocket to an altitude suitable for launch into orbit, eliminating the need for costly launching pads. The carrier aircraft to is expected to make its first test flight in 2015 with a follow on to orbital testing of the launch vehicle in 2016. Allen and Rutan join an elite group of billionaires who have cast their eyes and their fortunes at the heavens. The most prominent are Sir Richard Branson, whose Virgin Galactic company is planning to
offer jaunts to the edge of space from a newly built space port in New Mexico, perhaps as early as late next year. Other names include Jeffrey Bezos, the Amazon.com founder, who has a space company called Blue Origin, and Elon Musk, the founder of Paypal, who established a rocket making company called SpaceX that has received contracts from NASA. Headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, Stratolaunch Systems has signed a 20-year lease agreement with the Kern County Airport Authority, Mojave, California, for the lease of 20 acres at the Mojave Air and Space Port to build a facility for the venture.
More convenient air travel to US Passengers travelling to the U.S. from Canada will soon be able to use NEXUS cards to expedite screening at Canada’s eight largest airports—Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax—using dedicated screening lines. The Government of Canada announced last month that it will work closely with airport authorities to fully offer this service beginning in February 2012. NEXUS lines are already operating at all eight major international Canadian airports at domestic and select international checkpoints. In addition, travellers will also benefit from the elimination of duplicate bag-
gage screening over the next three years. This means that passengers flying from Canadian airports with U.S. pre-clearance facilities will no longer have their baggage screened once on departure from Canada and again at the connecting U.S. airport. It is anticipated that this change will make connections through U.S. cities easier and reduce the risk of bags missing connecting flights. “Currently, passengers flying from Canadian airports have their bags screened once on departure from Canada and again at the connecting U.S. airport,” said James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “This [can] result in
delays, missed connections and increased costs for airlines and airports. Soon, Canadians will be able to book tighter connections while travelling to U.S. cities and have a better chance of getting their bags on the same connecting flight.” NEXUS is a bi-national Canada-U.S. program for pre-approved, low-risk travellers into Canada and the U.S. at designated air, land and marine ports of entry. When travelling by air, NEXUS expedites border clearance by allowing members to enter either country quickly and easily by using self-service kiosks. For more information, visit nexus. gc.ca or call 1-866-NEXUS-26 (1-866-639-8726).

Forecast covers why and how Canadians will travel in 2012
Travel Talk
Left: Volunteers at the Skyway Hotel, located in the heart of Siem Reap, Cambodia, can make a difference in the lives of destitute children by teaching them English and computer skills and assisting them with homework. Right: The 23rd season of the reality television series Survivor was filmed in the vicinity of Upolu, Samoa. The island is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls, which are situated off its southern coast.
According to Lauren Sullivan, site editor for online travel company, Cheapflights, which helps more than 11-million visitors find top travel deals each month, finding creative ways to stretch the travel budget and get value for money will be a top priority for both travellers and travel providers in 2012. “The state of the global economy is making the headlines on a daily basis,” said Sullivan. “The Canadian economy is the bright light amidst all this darkness.
However, the Canadian travel industry will inevitably be affected by all the global uncertainty—both for Canadians travelling abroad and international travellers coming to Canada.” However, Sullivan believes that the outlook is not all bleak and taking into account the global economy as well as other factors, the company has compiled their Top 5 Travel Trend Predictions for 2012. 1. Value for money Though the priority is to get away, cutting
costs is still on the top of every traveller’s mind. Cheapflights predicts valuefor-money escapes will be the top trend in 2012, with the travel industry seeing a rise in consumer demand for discounted trips, package vacations, all-inclusive and cruises. 2. Rise in pet travel So many flyers are taking dogs and cats onboard their flights that the Canadian Transportation Agency recently ruled that certain airlines must protect allergic pas-
sengers. Air Canada and WestJet have been asked by the agency to either ban cats on flights with allergic passengers or to create feline-free zones with ventilation. Airlines around the globe are seeing significant increases in the number of pets travelling, with Virgin reporting a 1,500 per cent increase in the number of dogs vacationing with their owners since 2003. 3. Athletic ‘voluntourism’ vacations Various types of vacations that allow
travellers to volunteer while on vacation have become popular. According to Cheapflights, a new trend, athletic voluntourism, is set to emerge in 2012. Born out of the participation in famous world races such as the New York or London marathons, this trend is growing and spreading into other areas of sport, delivering the doubly beneficial effect of raising money while getting fit. 4. Reality TV drives destination trends For years reality competitions, such as The Amazing Race and Survivor, have offered viewers around-the-world trips from the comfort of their couches. Now other reality shows focusing on prime places are stepping up their destination game. Whether it’s the proposals or the fist pumps, reality shows are inspiring TV audiences to consider vacation spots that, if not for their DVR, they may not have considered. 5. The new upgrade Comfort, perks and new ways to upgrade define the face of flying for 2012. As airlines change their cabin layouts, there will be inventive ways for passengers to find mini upgrades— think more leg room, more luggage room and more comfort, such as Cuddle Class, the economy class option where passengers can lay flat and cuddle up on long-haul flights.

Borneo’s Sea Turtle Adoption Program The Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse, home of the new Mob Museum. On Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2012, Las Vegas will be home to a new downtown destination, dedicated to the story of organized crime and law enforcement. The Mob Museum, officially called the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, will present an authentic view of the contentious relationship between organized crime and law enforcement within the historical context of Las Vegas and the entire world. The museum is under construction in an historic former federal courthouse and U.S. Post Office, the very building where Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, himself a former attorney for mob figures, defended Anthony Tony Spilotro, Meyer Lansky and Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. It is also the same building where, in 1950, Senator Estes Kefauver conducted one of 14 national hearings on organized crime. The museum will include the bloodstained wall in front of which the St.
Valentine’s Day massacre took place along with other exhibits that will focus on mob violence, casino money-skimming operations and wiretapping by law enforcement. Dr. Dennis Barrie is the museum’s creative director, who heads a team of researchers, preservation architects, curators and exhibit fabricators who are bringing to life the story of the Mob as well as those who fought organized crime. Dr. Barrie is also responsible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and The International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., both highly successful projects that have played a role in the revitalization of the areas where they are located. The project budget for the museum is estimated at $50-million, including $26-million for restoring the building. Visit yvr.ca for flight schedules to Las Vegas.
Sea turtles are among the world’s longest living creatures, with many reaching a lifespan of more than 100 years. They have survived almost unchanged since the Triassic period, some 200-million years ago. However, the breeding habits that have served them well for so long are now contributing to their extinction. Sea turtles mature slowly and only start to breed between 15 to 50 years of age and the females usually produce eggs once every four or five years. Talang-Satang National Park was established with the primary aim of conserving Sarawak’s sea turtle population. The park comprises the coastline and sea surrounding four islands of the southwest coast of Sarawak—one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. Beautiful shallow reef areas surround the four islands that comprise the park and provide shelter
and resting grounds for sea turtles. Sarawak Forestry has begun a Sea Turtle Adoption Program that allows volunteers to actively participate in turtle conservation efforts by spending four days at the turtle conservation station on Pulau Talang-Talang Besar. This conservation initiative is designed to create awareness about the importance of sea turtle conservation, while offering volunteers a handson experience. Participants in the program help conserve one of the world’s most endangered species by joining a team of professionals who carry out conservation programs that include research and conservation activities, data recording, nest analysis and transferring eggs to hatchery and releasing hatchlings. More than 1,200 volunteers in the 23-hour NORAD Tracks Santa operations centre answered nearly 102,000 calls from children looking for Santa Claus—20,000 more than in 2010. They also answered 7,721 emails, an increase from last year’s count. Volunteers ranged from NORAD’s Peterson Airforce Base family members volunteering their time to First Lady Michelle Obama, who for the second year, answered NORAD Tracks Santa calls from Hawaii. The NORAD Tracks Santa website, noradsanta.org, had 18.9-million unique visitors access the site from 220 countries and territories across the globe during the month of December. The site featured Google Earth maps, interactive games and offered photos, videos and lots of fun facts about Santa and his reindeer. More than 101,000 people also followed Santa’s progress on Twitter, which is nearly double the number from the previous year, while fans of the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page neared one-million followers. New this year was the addition of free apps in the Apple Store and in the Android Market. Parents and children were able to countdown the days until Santa’s take off on their smart phones and track his progress. The app received a total of 1.4-million downloads.

Air New Zealand’s 777-300ER in all black livery is a flying bill board that’s more than 73.9-metres long. Last month, Air New Zealand revealed the world’s largest commercially operated aircraft to be painted completely black. World Champion New Zealand All Blacks rugby players Kieran Read and Andy Ellis ceremonially led the one-of-akind Boeing 777-300ER aircraft out of Boeing’s paint hangar facility in Seattle, highlighting Air New Zealand’s long-time sponsorship of the recently crowned World Champion All Blacks rugby team. “It’s a sensational looking aircraft and will really turn heads at airports around the world,” said No. 8 loose forward Kieran Read. “I reckon they should paint all their planes like this!” According to Boeing, painting the aircraft took just over a week, two days longer than it normally takes to paint a 777 aircraft. 700 litres of chrome-free primer and paint was used and involved a total of 14 painters working in shifts 24 hours a day. Prepping and painting the aircraft entirely black took one and a half days, followed by a further five days for the intricate detail of the silver fern overlaid on it and the airline’s Koru symbol. Remaining time was spent on the finishing touches. “It was, without a doubt, one of the most challenging paint jobs we’ve ever done, but the paint team was up for the challenge and the results are absolutely outstanding,” said Jeff Klemann, Boeing vice president Everett Delivery Centre. “I am very proud of what the paint team has achieved.” Contrary to popular belief, the black paint won’t cause the aircraft to heat up a great deal. In fact, the more than 330 individual TV screens inside the aircraft create more additional heat than the all-black paint job. The aircraft is expected to be delivered to Air New Zealand in late January following the completion of its interior fit out. By mid next year Air New Zealand will have six aircraft featuring the all black livery including two Airbus A320s and three Beech 1900D turbo-props.

Malbec (pronounced mal-bek) is a purple grape variety originating from the Bordeaux region of France. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannins and are long known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. However, with the exception of Cahors in the southwest region of France, its fame and fortune in France often ends there, as Malbec is generally a grape used for blending, with very little vine being devoted to its improvement or success. In Argentina, the story is quite the opposite. Malbec has found both fame and glory in that country’s sun-drenched climate and has become Argentina’s signature grape. The success of Malbec in Argentina has led some producers in neighbouring Chile to plant this varietal. Grown throughout the Central Valley, Chilean Malbec tends to be more tannic than its Argentine counterpart and is used primarily in Bordeaux-style blends. Other regions with some plantings of Malbec include north Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Bolivia, Mexico, Southern Indiana and small plantings in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley and Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. The Malbec grape is a thin-skinned grape and needs more sun and heat than either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to mature. The grapes ripen mid-season and can bring very deep colour, ample tannin and a plum-like flavour component to add complexity to claret blends. Food Pairings Malbec is a red meat wine that is adaptable enough to stand up to spicy Mexican, Cajun, Indian or tomato-based sauces in Italian fare.

Financial resolutions for the New Year By Peter Kutney Many people think of setting goals or resolutions at the beginning of a new year. However, one of the areas often overlooked is that of finance. If you haven’t included financial planning as one of your New Year’s resolutions, consider the following strategies to get your finances on the road to good health. Open and save in a TFSA account Tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs) have been around for several years. They allow you to save $5,000 per year in a tax-sheltered account. All the interest, dividends and capital gains grow inside the account and are not taxed. You do
not get a tax deduction from your taxable income, but the capital and growth can be withdrawn anytime in the future on a tax-free basis. If you have not yet opened a TFSA account you actually could contribute $20,000 this year. Don’t let negative emotions sway your investing Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) are still the one of the best tax-saving tools available to Canadians. However, many investors may be discouraged by their recent returns as a result of market pull-back and the ongoing Eurocrisis. But remember, over the long-term, stocks do return on average nine to ten per cent per year—a percentage that holds true despite recessions, 9/11, two world wars, the 2008 financial crisis, etc. Market declines just mean you get to buy more stocks at a discount. Don’t let your emo-
tions get the better of you, continue that regular monthly investment plan and let dollar cost averaging work for you. Pay off debt Get rid of credit card debt. Many banks and especially retail store credit cards have interest rates in double digits, which make it almost impossible to pay off if you only make the minimum payment each month. Talk to your bank—request a lower interest rate or consolidate your debt into a personal loan with a much lower interest rate. If you are paying your mortgage with a monthly payment, look into changing it to a bi-weekly payment. This could knock years off the term of your mortgage and reduce the interest you pay by thousands. Paying down debt produces a guaranteed rate of return. Review your estate plan If you haven’t reviewed your finan-
cial plans for the future, now would be a good time to do it. Review your will and its intention, including choice of executor and beneficiaries. Communicate your plans to your family and tell them where your will is. Pay yourself first Most people who have trouble saving for the future do so because they look for money left over either at the end of the pay period or when all the bills have been paid. A change of thinking is in order. If you pay yourself at least 10 per cent as soon as you receive your pay cheque, you will see a big difference in the way your savings grow. Set up a pre-authorized savings plan to make the process automatic as soon as you get paid. That monthly savings could go to an RRSP or TFSA account. Review your insurance Everyone with dependants or chil-
Money Matters dren should have some life insurance. Even if you are older and financially secure, life insurance provides a tax-free lump sum that helps meets immediate cash needs. If you are relatively young with a good income, then your future earnings potential is your largest financial asset. For people in their 20s and 30s, the value of those future earnings is in the millions. If you get ill or disabled, then you cannot earn that income, so protect that asset with disability or critical illness insurance. Remember that getting your finances in order is as important as working on your physical health. Peter Kutney is a financial planner with Investment Planning Counsel in Vancouver. 2013 Subaru BRZ to debut at North American International Auto Show Subaru’s production version of its allnew, rear-wheel drive 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car will make its North American debut at this month’s North American International Auto Show at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
The BRZ will add a new product line to the Subaru brand, which announced its fourth consecutive year of sales growth and a new all-time vehicle sales record for 2011. According to Subaru, the 2013 BRZ
CarTalk
was designed with one goal in mind— exceptional handling. To achieve that goal, Subaru engineers developed a chassis that would deliver the lowest center of gravity (CoG) possible, utilizing the packaging of the brand’s
WESTERNDRIVER.COM The 2013 Subaru BRZ provides a sporty addition to the Subaru line-up of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers and SUVs. Boxer engine design. An all-new naturally aspirated twolitre, 200-horsepower horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine was created. The new engine was developed to be more compact so that it could be placed lower and farther back in the chassis. To achieve the low CoG, a rear-drive layout was deemed necessary in order that the engine could be mounted as low as possible in the chassis. This engine placement allows for low polar moment and near-perfect balance for pure sports car handling. With a low vehicle weight of just over 1,224 kilograms, the direct injected two-litre provides quick acceleration as it revs to its
7,400 RPM redline. The Subaru BRZ is available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. While the BRZ’s height of just 1.28 metres, swept-back roofline, bulging front fenders, short overhangs and pronounced rear haunches give the sleekly styled vehicle a sporty stance, its 2+2 seating and expandable trunk space is designed to provide everyday comfort and practicality. Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers and SUVs and the addition of the BRZ to its vehicle line-up demonstrates the brand’s penchant for engineering roadworthy vehicles.

Volvo’s C30, a 2012 Top Safety Pick, comes with a MSRP of $30,995. Volvo leadership in car safety is confirmed in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2012 Top Safety Pick awards. Five Volvo models, the C30, S60, S80, XC60 and XC90, were named last month as 2012 Top Safety Pick winners, a total unsurpassed by any other luxury car brand. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting occupants involved in four collision scenario results, including front, side, rollover, and rear crashes. Frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 64 kilometres per hour frontal offset crash tests. Side evaluations are based on perfor-
mance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 50 kilometres per hour. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the car roof must withstand a force of four times the vehicle’s weight before reaching 12.7 centimetres of crush. Rear crash protection is rated using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 32 kilometres per hour. Other luxury brands receiving Top Safety Pick awards included MercedesBenz (5), Audi (4), Acura (3), Infiniti (2), BMW (2) and Lexus (2).

2012 Volkswagen Beetle
A New Original
The task for third-generation Volkswagen engineers was to develop a modern interpretation of the Beetle, with all the benefits of today’s technologies and efficiencies and the driving characteristics that define the Volkswagen brand. The design of the new Beetle presented another challenge. How does one reinvent a look that is so recognizable and unique? Volkswagen group design chief Walter de Silva and Volkswagen brand design chief, Klaus Bischoff, set an ambitious objective: “Design a new original!” The designers wanted to develop the new car around the 1930s Beetle profile, rather than the 1998 New Beetle—a car that respected the past while looking towards the future. Exterior Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is more dynamic. “The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness,” said Klaus Bischoff. “The car not only has a lower profile, it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism.” The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI Clean Diesel and turbocharged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen offers a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the Fender Premium Audio System and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.
New Beetle, complete with dashboard flower power, rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. Last spring, a third-generation redesigned Beetle opened a new chapter in the car’s remarkable story when it celebrated its transcontinental world debut simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York. integrated into the dash.
Engine & Transmission #6247
# 6248 TRUNK
The dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sporty roofline that increases front and rear passenger headroom. The longer roof section results in more space and increased trunk capacity and the wide-opening hatch-back makes loading and unloading easy.
The 2012 Beetle comes with three engines: 2.5-litre gasoline five-cylinder 170-horsepower; 2-litre TDI Clean Diesel; and 2-litre TSI 200-horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual or optional six-
speed automatic on 2.5-litre models. Volkswagen’s DSG six-speed dualclutch transmission is offered (when available) on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2-litre TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a six-speed manual comes standard. Fuel economy values are also improved up to 10 per cent over prior 2.5litre five-cylinder engine models. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission manufacturer estimates of 9.9litres/100 kilometres city and 6.4litres/100 kilometres highway are claimed. The optional 6-speed automatic offers manufacturer estimates of 9.5litres/100km city, 7.1 litres/100km highway.
Premium Features The Beetle can also be customized with a wide choice of optional features including radio-CD and radio-navigation systems, panoramic roof, Fender Premium Audio System and keyless entry access. With its combination of performance, price, VW-build reputation and initial industry and public reaction to the vehicle, the third generation Beetle will be a hot seller—even without the flower power. Stephen Nolan Answer: EMB-120 Brasilia
Last month’s winner:
The Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia is a twin-turboprop commuter airliner, produced by Embraer of Brazil. Serial production ended in 2001. Most EMB 120s were sold in the U.S., with SkyWest Airlines operating the largest fleet of these aircraft. EMB 120 aircraft share much of the production equipment used in the ERJ-145 family, which is still produced.
