Pulling together to reduce childhood blindness “Pulling their weight” took on a whole new meaning at YVR on May 27 when 15 teams competed to pull a Boeing 757 cargo aircraft across 3.65 metres of tarmac in the shortest time. The Pull for Sight event, a fundraiser for ORBIS Canada, raises awareness and funds for the ORBIS Kids Sight Program, which works to eliminate blindness in children in developing countries.

More than 600 people attended the event, hosted by FedEx, with 15 teams from around the Lower Mainland competing for the best time. Thousands of dollars were raised for ORBIS to help it establish new facilities and/or support existing facilities in developing world locations such as Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, Peru and China.

Airport Authority welcomes Sichuan Airlines Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced the upcoming arrival to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) of Sichuan Airlines, offering North America’s first and only direct flight to China’s interior. Beginning June 22, Sichuan Airlines will offer service three times per week between Vancouver and Chengdu, via Shenyang. “The service to Sichuan Province marks not only a new destination, but a new airline for YVR,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This means more options for passengers and greater opportunities for business and for tourism. We are extreme-

ly pleased that Sichuan Airlines has chosen YVR as its first entry point into North America. It is a testament to YVR’s position as a premier global gateway to the Asia-Pacific region, and to Sichuan Airlines’ confidence in the market.” The announcement was made at a media event with representatives from Vancouver Airport Authority, Sichuan Airlines, the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia and the Chinese Consulate. Not only will Sichuan’s service boost tourism, but it will also create 56 new jobs at YVR and contribute an estimated $5-million to British Columbia’s gross domestic product (GDP) annually.

With more than 23,600 people working on Sea Island, YVR is one of British Columbia’s key economic and employment generators. As the closest major North American airport to Asia, YVR has more flights to China than any other airport on the continent. Chengdu and Shenyang are important economic and commercial cities and this new service opens new trade and tourism opportunities for businesses in British Columbia. Given Canada’s recent Approved Destination Status from China, the service also supports British Columbia’s Pacific Gateway Transportation Strategy targeting an increase in the number of passengers and cargo travelling through YVR.

Pulling together Continued from page 1 In the world today there are approximately 19-million visually impaired children and too often vision problems prevent kids from excelling in school, playing sports or taking part in other activities that their sighted peers take for granted. The vast majority of visually impaired children live in developing countries, where pediatric eye care services are often unavailable or unaffordable. As a result, many of these children go blind even though they suffer from treatable or preventable conditions. Through direct ORBIS

support over the last decade alone, more than four-million children have received medical or refractive error treatments, while 170,000 have received sight-improving surgeries. The

impact for these children, their families and communities is profound, especially when sight restoration allows for full integration into social and economic activities.

has flown to Canada. “We have been working for years to bring this world-class carrier to Vancouver to offer passengers more choice and satisfy the high demand for flights to the U.K., particularly during the busy summer season,” said Berg. “This new service means more jobs for British Columbians both on and off of YVR’s Sea Island home, and increased tourism revenue, particularly given that the U.K. is B.C.’s single greatest source of overseas visitors.” Up to 40,000 passengers are expected to take advantage of Virgin’s service, which will generate approximately $21.5-million in tourism revenue and create an additional 172 direct jobs in hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. In total, the new service will

add an estimated $10.4-million to B.C.’s gross domestic product. “We are excited to bring the Virgin Atlantic travel experience to the city of Vancouver,” said Chris Rossi, senior vice president, North America, Virgin Atlantic Airways. “We look forward to connecting this vibrant city and culture with London; the city with the world’s focus in 2012.” Virgin’s new service will be operated by an Airbus A340-300, which will be configured with 34 upper-class seats, 35 premiumeconomy seats and 171 economy seats. Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and arrive at YVR at 3:10pm and depart at 7:20pm. For more information, visit virgin-atlantic.com.

Community Corner Penny donations reap big rewards for Quest Bike to Work Week Food Exchange encourages cycling as alternative transport Vancouver Airport Authority is calling on travellers and its airport community to put their last pennies to good use. From June 14-28, YVR will be collecting pennies to benefit Quest Food Exchange, a Vancouver-based not-for-profit that helps those in need access affordable, healthy food. Funds raised will be used to purchase lunches for inner-city children this summer. “Many kids rely on school lunch programs for healthy food,” said Elizabeth Crudgington, executive director, Quest Food Exchange. “When schools are closed in the summer, providing lunch can be an extra burden for families that are already struggling financially.” As little as $30, or 3,000 pennies, can provide a month of lunches for a child. The Airport Authority is encouraging all organizations on Sea Island to take part, and will provide lunch boxes and supplies to fill with pennies during the drive.

In recognition of Bike to Work Week, Vancouver Airport Authority—a sponsor of the week that is designed to promote and encourage the use of cycling as a transportation mode—hosted a commuter station at Flight Path

It is also challenging those organizations or internal departments to a friendly competition to see which group can collect the most pennies. The coins will be weighed, and winners declared, at a public weigh-in on June 28. An extension of YVR’s longstanding post-security coin ball program, this challenge allows travellers and members of the general public to donate their change at one of two coincollection kiosks, located at the International Terminal and Domestic Terminal food courts. “Loose change can be a real hassle for travelers,” said Anne Murray, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Whether it is having

to empty your pockets before passing through security screening or trying to get rid of local currency before flying home. Especially now that the penny is being eliminated, we felt we could put all that change to good use in our community.” YVR began its partnership with Quest in February 2011. To date, the Sea Island community has donated $120,000 in cash through fundraising initiatives and sponsorship and donated more than $125,000 worth (or approximately 1,650-kilograms) of food. For more information or to get involved, email community_ relations@yvr.ca.

Park on June 1. The commuter station offered passing cyclists free snacks, drinks and bike tune-ups by helpful onsite mechanics. There are five dedicated bicycle racks located throughout

Sea Island for commuters who cycle to YVR, including Canada Line Templeton Station, Sea Island Station, Airport South, the International Terminal, Arrivals Level 2 and the Domestic Terminal.

Green Coat volunteer Brenda Gorton dropped by the informational commuter station during YVR’s Bike to Work Week, held May 28 to June 3.

Swissport recognized for ‘Good Housekeeping’ Vancouver Airport Authority’s commitment to a safe and secure airport is highlighted and promoted each year with various in-terminal and airside activities including a Health and Wellness Fair, FOD (Foreign Object Debris) Walk and Airside Barbeque. As part of the annual FOD walk, the Airport Authority announces the winner of its Good Housekeeping Award, which recognizes an outstanding business that goes above and beyond to ensure YVR’s airside is clean and FOD-free. At this year’s FOD walk breakfast held in the Public Observation Area, the Good Housekeeping Award for 2012 was given to Swissport International Ltd. Swissport won the award for performing weekly FOD walks

and keeping the company’s working area clean. Good Housekeeping Award Honourable Mentions were also awarded to American Airlines and FedEx for the companies’ commitment to airside cleanliness and regular FOD walks. Companies selected and recognized for the Good Housekeeping Award are evaluated based on airside disposal and the cleanliness of airside work areas. This is the 20th year of the Vancouver Airport Authority’s FOD walk and Good Housekeeping Award. The plaque presented to winners is made from a Boeing 737 engine blade and past recipients’ names are engraved around the bottom of the plaque, with new winners added each year.

Canada’s new polymer $20 note Last month saw the unveiling of Canada’s new $20 note, the third in the Polymer series. The $100 polymer note was issued in November 2011 and the $50 in March 2012. The $20 will be out in November 2012, followed by the $10 and $5 by the end of 2013. The idea behind unveiling the images of the $20 now is to give Canadians and cash handlers time to familiarize themselves with the appearance and security features of the new notes. The front of the new $20 note continues to feature a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while the back features the Canadian National Vimy

Memorial as a tribute to Canada’s contributions and sacrifices in military conflicts throughout its history. If you run a business, use a cash counter, or have a vending machine, there are three things you can do to get ready for the new note:

• Get in touch with your supplier to find out if your equipment works with Canada’s new polymer notes.

• Get to know the new notes by scheduling a free training seminar for your staff. Simply call toll-free 1 888 513-8212 or email education@

Teeth whitening for a beautiful smile My teeth seem to be getting more yellow as I get older. What causes this? There are many reasons why your teeth may not be as white as you would like. One factor is heredity. Everyone’s dentin (the second layer of the tooth) is a unique shade of either yellow or blue/grey. The thickness of a person’s enamel (the first layer of the tooth) is based on genetics and affects how much of the natural yellow or blue/grey shows through. As people age, the enamel also thins, showing more of the dentin. Other causes of tooth discolouration include food, beverages such as coffee, tea, beets and red wine, medication such as tetracycline and trauma to the teeth.

less effective than those provided by your dentist. The Vancouver Airport Dental Centre offers three ways to whiten teeth: In-office whitening. This is an entirely in-office procedure in which Opalescence Boost, rated the #1 in-office bleaching system by many studies, is used. During this procedure, the teeth are isolated and the bleach is then applied for about 20-45 minutes. The whitening is completed in one session. Custom take-home whitening trays. In this method, impressions of the teeth are taken and fabricated trays are custom fit to the patient’s mouth. This initial appointment takes about 20 minutes. During the second appointment, the patient is provided with the trays, syringes of bleaching gel and instructions on how to use the product. At home, the patient lines the trays with the whitening material and wears them for at least an hour a day for approximately two weeks.

Patients are encouraged to wear the trays for a few hours or even overnight each day for the best results possible. Pre-filled take-home whitening trays. These are disposable one-size-fits-all take-home bleaching trays that are already filled with the appropriate amount of whitening gel. Patients receive 10 pre-filled upper trays and 10 pre-filled lower trays. The trays are worn for 20 to 30 minutes a day for 10 days. These trays are not intended for overnight use. While the method of bleaching is a personal preference, the results will generally be the same. However, it is always best to consult your dentist before doing any type of tooth whitening. Your dentist will examine your teeth, advise if you are a suitable candidate for tooth whitening, discuss what type of results you can expect, and also recommend the best method for you. Your dentist may also rec-

ommend a professional cleaning before whitening, especially if you have a lot of tartar build-up or extrinsic stain. Will my teeth be sensitive after whitening them? In general, tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of whitening and can be caused by a number of factors including: • concentration and formulation of the bleaching agent • duration of the treatment • open dentinal tubules • tooth decay (cavities) • gum recession • history of sensitive teeth • an ill-fitting mouth tray Many of these factors can be eliminated or minimized by taking precautions and your dentist can give you appropriate advice during the consultation appointment. All of the whitening products used at the Vancouver Airport Dental Centre contain potassium nitrate with fluoride, both

of which are clinically proven desensitizing agents, which eliminate or significantly reduce the risk of discomfort for most people. In addition, this unique formulation has been proven to help prevent cavities, increase enamel hardness and improve the overall health of teeth.

Dr. Amy Nunrha, primary practitioner at the Vancouver Airport Dental Centre, has more than 10 years of tooth-whitening experience and has used almost every dentistprescribed whitening product on the market. She is confident that the bleaching materials that she uses

Cascade Aerospace and Lockheed Martin sign agreement

A Canadian North Boeing 737-200 displaying a logo that includes three of the distinctive symbols of the North—the polar bear, the midnight sun and the Northern Lights.

Canadian North, which offers passenger and cargo services to Northwest Territories and Nunavut through its southern gateways of Edmonton and Ottawa, has signed an interline agreement with WestJet. The agreement allows passengers to book travel with both airlines on one ticket, checking in

for Canadian North and WestJet flights at the same time, as well as through-checking luggage all the way to the final destination. “We’re pleased to launch our first Canadian airline partnership,” said John MacLeod, WestJet vice president, Network Management and Alliances. ‘We look forward to connecting up

guests between WestJet’s network to the south and Canadian North’s strong northern network.” Bookings for Canadian North and WestJet flights can be made on Canadian North’s website or call centre, or through a travel agent. Canadian North and its founding companies—Canadian

B.C.-based Cascade Aerospace and U.S. aerospace company Lockheed Martin have signed an agreement to jointly pursue mutually beneficial business opportunities. These include Canada’s Fixed Wing Search and Rescue replacement aircraft acquisition and in-service support programs, as well as other programs and projects relating to Lockheed’s C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. The agreement is the first of its kind that Lockheed Martin has signed with a Canadian aerospace firm. Lockheed Martin delivered Canada’s 17th CC-130J aircraft to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) at 8 Wing Trenton last month, completing the order

Canada placed in December 2007 three months ahead of schedule. Cascade’s team supports the day-to-day activities of both the CC-130J and legacy model aircraft at 8 Wing Trenton, the hub of air mobility operations in Canada. In 2010, Lockheed Martin awarded a 20-year contract to Cascade for maintenance services to support Canada’s new CC-130Js. Cascade also provides fleet management services directly to the RCAF for their legacy model C-130 fleet. Cascade is one of only two Lockheed Martin-authorized C-130 service centres in the western hemisphere and one of 13 worldwide.

September 9-12, 2012 ACI World/North America Conference and Exhibit

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama announce the development of an integrated Canada/U.S. cross-border security agreement.

Last month, the governments of Canada and the United States signed an agreement to mutually recognize and cooperate on air cargo security in both countries. Under the new initiative, cargo shipped on passenger aircraft will now be screened only once—at the point of origin— for transportation security reasons and will not need to be rescreened prior to upload on an aircraft in the other country. This will reduce delays and economic costs caused by both countries screening the same

cargo twice. In Canada, almost half of all air cargo is shipped on passenger planes, which is the most effective shipping method, considering Canada’s size and unique geography. In 2011, approximately $100-billion of goods were imported and exported by air. On February 4, 2011, the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the United States issued a Declaration on a Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness,

which called for the development of a joint action plan. The resulting Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan establishes initiatives to improve the ability to manage security risks in both countries, while reducing the burden on business. The action plan focuses on four areas: addressing threats early; facilitating trade, economic growth and jobs; integrating cross border law enforcement; and strengthening critical infrastructure and cyber security.

WestJet and Korean Air begin code-share agreement Starting this month, WestJet began a code-sharing arrangement with Korean Air, the largest airline in South Korea. The code-share agreement allows Korean Air to market and distribute WestJetoperated flights by placing its

KE flight indicator on WestJetoperated flights in North America. This will enhance the travel possibilities for Korean Air guests by allowing seamless access to more than 70 flights within WestJet’s North American network.

In addition to Korean Air, WestJet now has code-share agreements with American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, and KLM. WestJet also has interline agreements with another 17 airlines around the world.

WestJet launches new unaccompanied minor program WestJet has revealed details of its new unaccompanied minor program, which allows children to travel without a parent or guardian. The program is required for children between the ages of eight and 11 and optional for children ages 12 to 17. The program was launched following feedback from travellers encouraging the airline to unveil a service that allows children to travel alone. “The unaccompanied minor program will help connect families around our domestic network, help us remain competitive and contribute to our friendly and caring brand,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet executive vice-president, sales, marketing and guest experience. Under the unaccompanied minor program, a fee of $100 per child, per flight, will be

added to the fare paid. For this fee, the child will remain in the care of WestJetters from the time they board the aircraft until they are met by a parent or guardian on arrival. On flights with live seatback television, unaccompanied minors will receive a set of regular earbuds. On routes with buy-on-

board service, children will also receive a free sandwich or other buy-on-board items. WestJet will accept unaccompanied minors on WestJet-operated domestic flights that are non-stop or flights that do not require a change of aircraft. This service is not available on connecting flights, flights operated by code-share or interline partners or on WestJet Vacations and WestJet Vacations Group bookings. WestJet’s guardian fare program, which allows a guardian to accompany a child on their flight, will remain available for booking and can be used for flights that do not qualify under the unaccompanied minor program. Full details can be found at westjet.com/childrenstravelprogram.

Kelowna resident receives Hope Air Volunteer Pilot Award Last month, Hope Air presented a Distinguished Volunteer Pilot Award to Braden Messenger at a special ceremony in Kelowna. As a Hope Air volunteer pilot, Messenger donates his time, expertise, aircraft and a significant portion of flight expenses to Hope Air, which allows the airline to arrange free flights to get financially disadvantaged Canadians to specialized medical care that is only available in Canada’s larger urban centres. Since 2007, Messenger has

flown more than 5,000 kilometres on behalf of Hope Air clients. In addition, he is a community ambassador in the local Okanagan Valley, attending events to promote the airline’s services and raise funds. Messenger flies a fourseat Beechcraft B24R Sierra. His flights on behalf of Hope Air are primarily between Kelowna and Vancouver, but he has also flown clients from Penticton, Vernon, Castlegar and Cranbrook. “I am honoured and touched to be recognized

by Hope Air this year,” said Messenger on receiving the award. “Flying for Hope Air has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. The clients have been fantastic and extremely appreciative of the services that we provide. For many of them, it is their first time on an airplane and their excitement is contagious. I hope to be with Hope Air for years to come!” To learn more about Hope Air and the services it provides, visit hopeair.ca.

Canadian aviation Aviation News industry partners with Government of Canada to curtail emissions The Canadian aviation industry has partnered with the Government of Canada in an initiative to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. The release earlier this month from the Government of Canada entitled Canada’s Action Plan to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Aviation, builds on the success of the world’s first voluntary Memorandum of Understanding between Transport Canada and Canadian airlines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, which has been in place since 2005. The action plan sets out specific measures to improve fuel efficiency and includes commitments from the Government of Canada,

the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada, the Air Transport Association of Canada, the Canadian Airports Council, the Canadian Business Aviation Association, the National Airlines Council of Canada and NAV Canada. The action plan aims to improve fuel efficiency by an average of at least two per cent per year until 2020, which will help Canada’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels. “Our members strive to reduce their environmental impact,” said George Petsikas, president of the National Airlines Council of Canada, which repre-

sents Canada’s four largest airlines. “We collaborate with all our partners and emphasize a comprehensive approach based on the International Air Transportation Association’s four-pillar strategy. This plan to reduce emissions involves investing in technology, improving operational efficiency, building efficient infrastructure and implementing positive economic instruments to provide incentives for air carriers. The outstanding results achieved under previous agreements with the Government clearly indicate the effectiveness of such a multi-pronged approach.”

Delta buys stake in AeroMexico for US$65-million Delta Air Lines has purchased a four per cent stake in Mexico’s largest airline Grupo AeroMexico for US$65 million. The Mexican Federal Competition Commission (CFC) approved Delta Air Lines’ purchase of 30.2-mil-

lion AeroMexico shares at $31 Mexican pesos per share. Delta will also gain a seat on the AeroMexico board. Both Delta and Grupo AeroMexico are members of the SkyTeam and collectively offer flight tickets to 93 code-share desti-

nations, serving more than five-million passengers per year. The two airlines also plan to expand their maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) agreement with a new facility scheduled to open in Mexico next year.

Amphibious skiplane to be unveiled at Oshkosh For one week each summer, more than 500,000 aviation enthusiasts from 60 countries gather at EAA AirVenture, Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.” When it comes to aircraft, Oshkosh, which will be held from July 23-29, 2012 this year, will have it all—vintage, homebuilts, ultralights and unique oneof-a-kind examples.

One of the unique aircraft that will be unveiled at this year’s show is the Akoya, an amphibious light airplane from French company Lisa Airplanes. As the only aircraft in the world using Seafoil technology—cutting-edge hydrofoils located under the aircraft’s fuselage—the Akoya embodies a new generation of seaplanes that can be used for both sightseeing and cross-country flights.

Whistler Air’s 12-passenger DeHavilland Turbo Otter.

Last month, Richmondbased Harbour Air, which purchased Westcoast Air in 2010, announced the acquisition of Whistler Air. Whistler Air’s single DeHavilland Otter, with a capacity of 12 passengers, will be added to the Harbour Air/ Westcoast Air fleet of more than 50 aircraft.

The integration of services means scheduled flights to Whistler can be increased as the growing market requires in the months and years ahead. “We are pleased that Whistler Air is joining the Harbour Air and Westcoast Air family,” said Meredith Moll, Harbour Air’s vice-president of sales and marketing. “Whistler Air’s schedule will not only continue, it will be augmented by the sales and marketing team at Harbour Air and Westcoast Air.” Whistler Air will continue to offer scheduled service, charters and scenic tours. British Columbians and visitors to the province will also be offered unique tour packages between Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and Whistler. “Whistler is one of British Columbia’s great destinations,” said Moll. “With the acquisition of Whistler Air, our airline will

be able to offer an unrivalled service to this great Canadian resort destation.” Whistler Air, with a base on Green Lake in Whistler has been in service for 27 years. It was started by Mike Quinn in 1986 when Whistler was known primarily as a winter ski resort. As the resort grew, so did Whistler Air. Starting with a three-passenger Cessna 185, a DeHavilland Beaver was added in 1988. Whistler Air made a large part of wilderness British Columbia accessible to the general public by offering glacier tours, alpine lake landing tours and charter service specializing in Coastal mountain flying. Harbour Air/Westcoast Air is the world’s largest seaplane airline, with scheduled service to Whistler, Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox, Sechelt, Richmond and the Gulf Islands.

Traveller tips for protecting credit and debit cards

SKYTALK

• 13

Money Matters

By Peter Kutney

Credit cards and debit cards are the most popular payment option for Canadian travellers. This is particularly true for business travellers who use affinity credit cards to accumulate frequent flyer points. Always take the appropriate steps to protect your cards, especially when travelling. While most people are familiar with the basics of protecting credit cards—don’t loan it out; don’t leave it laying— there are lesser know strategies for protecting your credit cards and card numbers, too. And these are the strategies that you should know well and use constantly. Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN) Select a PIN that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Always avoid the obvious—your telephone number, date of birth, etc. Memorize your PIN. Do not let anyone else know or use your PIN and do not write it down. Period. No exceptions! Always enter your PIN yourself, rather than allowing a “helpful” merchant to do it for you when you’re making a purchase. No legitimate business will ever ask you for your PIN. Never give out your PIN over the phone, internet or mail. No one but you knows your PIN—

not even your bank. Guard your cards Always know the location of your debit and credit cards. Keep them in a safe place and never leave your cards in the car or unattended at work. Don’t lend your cards to anyone. When making a purchase, keep you card in view at all times. Watch to make sure it is not “double swiped” if the merchant swipes your card for you. If you use your PIN to complete the transaction, then cover your hand as you enter your PIN. Carry with you only the cards you need. Never provide your credit cards number over the phone unless you are dealing with a reputable company or you initiated the call yourself. Guard yourself Conduct your ABM and debit transactions when and where you feel most secure. Watch for debit machines that don’t look authentic, plastic sleeves where you insert your card, or suspicious individuals nearby. If using drive-through ABMs, keep your doors locked and close your window as soon as possible. Be conscious of anyone trying to distract you at an ABM Finish your transaction before talking to others.

Check your records, statements and activities Check your account statements as soon as they arrive to ensure all transactions and charges are correct. Look for extra or missing transactions and report any discrepancies immediately. Review your daily withdrawal limits. If you do not need a high daily limit, reduce it. This will help to contain fraud by

reducing the amount someone could access. Shred or burn all transaction records. Report missing cards immediately If your card is lost, stolen or is retained by an ABM, notify your financial institution immediately. In most cases, you will only be liable for a maximum of $50. With some banks there is a policy

of zero liability to the cardholder. If, however, a thief has used your cards for purchases and made those purchases using your PIN, then you might have difficulty persuading the credit card company to absorb those losses. The expense and frustration of dealing with credit card theft or loss is reason enough to protect cards. Be smart. Use caution. And always be aware of how

your credit card is being handled by someone else. Peter Kutney is a retirement and estate planner with Investment Planning Counsel based in Burnaby, BC. He can be reached at 604-4381603 or pkutney@ telus.net.

Lufthansa conducts inaugural flight of world’s first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental passenger aircraft Earlier this month, Lufthansa, the launch customer for the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, began commercial service of the new Jumbo jet along the inaugural route of Frankfurt to Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport. Lufthansa’s newest flagship aircraft will provide service between the two cities initially six days a week (excluding Tuesdays). “The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental is an exceptional aircraft,” said Christoph Franz, chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “With its addition to our fleet, Lufthansa has created a product that is not only in line with our company’s commitment to innovation, technology and efficiency, but [one] that also offers qualities and features that are sure to maximize our passengers’ in-flight experience.” Lufthansa’s 747-8 Intercontinental is equipped with 362

seats in a three-class configuration (8 First Class, 92 Business Class and 262 Economy Class). Passengers flying on the 747-8 Intercontinental will experience Lufthansa’s new Business Class which offers a unique seating arrangement in the form of a V, whereby two neighbouring seats are angled towards one another along a central axis. This allows Lufthansa to fulfill one of the main wishes expressed by customers during an extensive research process—to sit or lie facing the direction of travel, while at the same time enjoy virtually double the distance between two neighbouring seats at shoulder level. In addition, it allows Business Class passengers greater privacy and more personal living space. At the push of a button, the seat converts to a full-flat, horizontal sleeping surface measuring 1.98-metres in length.

Don Wheaton Jr. is co-owner of the Morningstar aviation group, which also operates the FedEx Express jet transport courier contract Canada-wide. His father started the company more than 40 years ago. Ledcor, the third Aurora principal, brings more than a decade of management of the construction giant’s corporate flight department and its charter division, Opus Aviation, into the fold. “Benefits such as guaranteed service when you need it, and access to an entire fleet of

Know Your Wine

Sangria

Sangria is a fruit-based wine “punch” typical of Spain and Portugal. It is normally made with red wine, fresh seasonal fruit and a bit of bubbly water or citrus flavoured soda. White wine can be used instead of red, in which case the result is called sangria blanca or, as in Argentina, clerico. Sangria is easy to make and drink and is a favourite offering at summer get-togethers. The beauty of Sangria recipes is that a variety of different red wines can be used in the recipe mix. It’s often unfinished bottles of wine or less expensive wines that are used to make the perfect Sangria blend.

The seasons have changed, but survey reveals many Canadians have not While most Canadian drivers (82 per cent) understand that their tires have the greatest impact on the overall traction and handling of their cars, a new poll by Goodyear Canada reveals that two in five (40 per cent) have not yet completed their tire changeover for summer. With two in four (44 per cent) believing that road conditions near them are worse today than in the past, and nearly two thirds (71 per cent) citing sudden downpours and high winds as the most

challenging weather to drive in. “Winter tires are designed for traction in cold conditions, so it’s time to changeover once the temperatures begin to consistently remain above seven degrees centigrade,” said Gus Liotta, general manager at Goodyear Canada. Keeping them on too long The survey, completed by Harris Decima, also finds that nearly one third of Canadians never change their tires as they either keep their winter tires on

all year (12 per cent) or don’t use winter tires at all (18 per cent). Keeping winter tires on too long may lead to drivers damaging their tire investments because they are specifically designed with tread compounds that stay pliable and provide better traction in colder temperatures and are therefore susceptible to faster wear in warmer weather. Weather the greatest challenge Additional results from the survey reveal that Canadian

drivers feel seasonal weather conditions create the greatest challenges to their daily commutes. Statistics varied by region, with respondents from British Columbia (66 per cent) listing sudden downpours as their most challenging driving conditions versus drivers in Quebec, Ontario and the Prairies (42 per cent) who felt thunderstorms were more of a problem. “The combination of challenging weather and unknown road conditions requires drivers

to have the right mindset and right equipment for safety on the road,” said Liotta. Goodyear’s driving tips: Wear the right shoes. Resist the urge to keep wearing your winter tires as the seasons change. Drive the conditions. Despite the traction and handling provided by performance tires in dry and wet conditions, motorists

should continue to take a defensive, careful approach to driving, especially as winter-damaged roadways can suddenly reveal hazards such as potholes. Get your money’s worth. You make a significant financial investment for your vehicle’s safety and performance features; from four-wheel drive, to traction control and sport suspension, but your tires are the primary components translating those benefits to the road. Advances in tire technology are helping deliver a new generation of tires that offer superior traction and handling, so ensure you buy the right tires for your vehicle. Watch for inflation. As temperatures change, so does tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotive safety, optimum driving performance and significant cost savings, including better fuel economy. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box and should be checked monthly.

Subaru BRZ arriving soon in Canadian showrooms

Subaru unveiled its brand new 2013 Subaru BRZ at Le Salon International de l’Auto de Montréal earlier this year, but buyers will have to wait until the end of this month for the much-anticipated rear-wheeldrive sports coupe to arrive in showrooms. The Subaru BRZ is sports car features an all-new horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER engine designed to produce 200-horsepowere and 151 lb.ft. of torque. BRZ’s engine is positioned even lower than other Subaru models so that the vehicle has one of the lowest possible centres of gravity on the market today. The lightweight yet highly rigid body was exclusively developed to maximize the advantages of this ultra-low centre of gravity to produce superior handling capabilities for drivers of all skill levels. Compact and light, the engine also features new direct injection and port injection technology for maximum efficiency and performance. Despite the BRZ’s compact design, it still offers seating for four with a folding rear seatback plus ample trunk space, making it suitable for longer trips. Exterior Subaru aimed for a traditional sports car design that conveys a fun-to-drive character, while including subtle details that allow the BRZ to be instantly recognizable as a Subaru. The ultra-low centre of gravity allowed for a low hood design and shapely fender flares. This aesthetic appeal is combined with functionality that advances aerodynamics through areas such as the C-pillar, rear glass inclination and trunk lid layout. Exterior sport cues include shortened front and rear overhands and projecting rear wheel arches. Interior A tachometer with digitally displayed speedometer is placed front and centre among the gauges, allowing the driver to easily see information without diverting attention from the road. Heavily bolstered sporty seats hold driver and passenger in place and feature lowered seating positions

optimal for the BRZ’s ultra-low centre of gravity. Engine As a frame of reference, the newly developed engine made exclusively for the BRZ is mounted lower and further back than the Subaru Impreza. In addition, the crankshaft centre was also lowered, while the starter motor was moved to the right-hand side of the engine bay and the battery was moved back behind the engine. To achieve its ultra-low centre of gravity, the engine as a whole has been made more compact by such means as adopting a shorter intake manifold and a shallower oil pan. Transmission A six-speed manual transmission employs a short stroke shift lever. Also, the lever itself was optimized in rigidity, shift quality and weight application in its pursuit of a superb shift feel. The six-speed automatic transmission has an S mode for sportier shifting response and an M mode for driver-controlled shifting. Additionally, paddle shifting and downshifting blipping control allow the BRZ to respond faithfully to driver input. Body The Subaru BRZ’s body has a rigid and durable frame structure that also works in balance with the vehicle’s light weight. This rigidity is optimized for high driveability and collision safety. High-tensile steel was used extensively in the body for weight reduction. Effective use of this material in the upper structure of the Subaru BRZ contributed to its low centre of gravity. The front hood employs aluminum for lightness. In addition, the structure was fine-tuned for low styling that also improves pedestrian protection performance. Chassis The front suspension employs struts for light weight and high rigidity, while doublewishbone rear suspension provides better shock absorption. To gain a low front hood from the ultra-low centre of gravity, the front strut mount was lowered (from Impreza) while maintaining the stroke. In addition, the

front lower arm layout has been reversed (from Impreza) due to a lower engine and steering gearbox. The rear suspension employs a box-shaped cross member for light weight and high rigidity. The Subaru BRZ will start at $27,295. For more details, visit richmondsubaru.com.

ADESA partners with CarProof ADESA Canada, the country’s largest vehicle auction service has partnered with CarProof, the Canadian vehicle history report provider, to offer reports on the majority of dealer, public and local fleet vehicles consigned at auction. “We are pleased to be partnering with CarProof to offer a more transparent experience for our customers—it takes their ability to buy with confidence to the next level,” said Stephane St-Hilaire, president of ADESA Canada. “Transparency in the used car business is increasingly becoming a topic of conversation and we feel that this is a positive change for both vehicle buyers

and sellers.” The benefits to ADESA Canada customers however, are only the beginning. If a dealer is purchasing the vehicle to re-sell for example, that CarProof report will follow the vehicle to the ultimate buyer. The result is the advantage of complete information for all those involved in the transaction process, most importantly the individual who ultimately buys it. “Cars change owners—they may be involved in accidents, they could have come from different countries—the details of a particular vehicle’s past are always changing,” said Marty Meadows, vice-president of

strategic accounts and business development at CarProof. “The one constant throughout those changes, however, is CarProof. We follow that vehicle from when it rolls off of the assembly line through its entire life and share that information with each new individual that interacts with it. You don’t have to rely on what someone is telling you about its history because you can know the facts without bias from CarProof.” ADESA has three locations in Richmond, B.C. and offers a full range of auction, reconditioning, logistical and other vehiclerelated services.
