Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS), an independent business unit within YVR, has installed 74 BorderXpress kiosks at Pafos International Airport (Pafos) and Larnaka International Airport (Larnaka) in Cyprus. This marks a major milestone for the industry and ITS, which developed the technology, as this is the first implementation of permanent kiosks for Entry and Exit border control in Europe. Hermes Airports Ltd, operating Pafos and Larnaka airports, is installing the kiosks to enable passengers to independently complete passport control procedures under the supervision of Hermes personnel and with the approval of Cyprus Police. “As the demand for air

travel continues to increase, airports around the world must embrace and implement innovative technologies to solve critical passenger processing challenges,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “BorderXpress kiosks will increase efficiencies and improve the overall passenger experience at Pafos and Larnaka airports while enhancing safety and security within the European Union.” BorderXpress uses selfservice biometric-enabled kiosks to expedite the border clearance process without compromising security. Employment Opportunities:

For the second consecutive year, Air Canada has been named Best Airline in North America. The airline received the award at the 2018 Skytrax World Airline Awards ceremony last month. This was the seventh time in the past nine years the carrier has been selected as the best in North America. The annual Skytrax World Airline Awards, which were introduced in 1999, are based on passenger satisfaction surveys of approximately 20-million global travellers. “Air Canada achieved a remarkable success winning this top accolade as the Best Airline in North America for the seventh time,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. “Air Canada demonstrates that it

is truly a passenger favourite as it continues to receive such a vote of confidence from customers.” Since 2010, Air Canada has embarked on a $10-billion capital expenditure program to elevate the travel experience, including a global network expansion to more than 220 cities; a fleet renewal program that adds stateof-the-art Dreamliners and Airbus A220-300 jets; new international, domestic and U.S. Maple Leaf lounges; technological innovations to facilitate customer interactions; enhanced onboard amenities; ongoing customer service training initiatives; and introduction of wide-body Signature Class Service on select North American routes.

“We are very pleased that Air Canada has again been recognized as the Best Airline in North America by the highly respected Skytrax World Airline Awards,” said Calin Rovinescu, president and chief executive officer of Air Canada. “This is the seventh time in nine years Air Canada has been honoured with this award, demonstrating our successful transformation into a leading global carrier. I thank our 30,000 employees who are the true winners of the Skytrax Award, for delivering superior service while transporting more than 48-million customers a year safely to their destinations.” For more information on Air Canada flights, visit aircanada. com.

Delta and WestJet’s U.S./Canada joint venture will offer more choices for travel between the U.S. and Canada.

WestJet and Delta Airlines have signed an agreement to create a comprehensive transborder joint venture arrangement that will offer customers an extensive route network within the U.S. and Canada. The agreement deepens the existing codeshare partnership between the carriers and follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December 2017 announcing the intention to form a joint venture. The joint venture will provide substantial reach into Canada and the U.S., with transborder service to more than 30 cities covering more than 95 per cent of U.S.Canada demand, providing customers of both airlines with more travel choices than ever before. The new joint venture will also enable Delta and WestJet to compete more effectively against other carriers.

Change is in the Air at YVR: August

There are several key projects currently taking place that will enhance the airport experience at YVR. This includes the airport’s biggest sustainability projects to date, new parking options, terminal expansions and much more. Some ongoing projects that may been seen on Sea Island this

month include: • Construction underway to prepare for Phase II of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. This phase is scheduled to open in Spring 2019 and will deliver more than 7,800 square metres of additional retail space. BC Hydro is completing

utilities work in and around Grant McConachie Way and Templeton Street. Expected work this month includes paving on Miller Road as well as bike lane repairs on Grant McConachie Way. Once schedules are finalized, more information will be provided. • Various work is continuing

in the old Value Lot (adjacent to the Parkade) to prepare for the construction of a new six-storey parking lot and Central Utilities Building. This work includes fence and hoarding installation, grubbing and some minor traffic control measures around the exit toll plaza. • As part of the above project,

preparatory work is also taking place around the old Value Lot in phases, overnight. Progressive lane closures are required westbound and eastbound on Grant McConachie Way. Impacts to the public will be minimal and drivers are asked to follow directional signage. The work is expected to

be completed this month. • As part of the jetSet Parking lot reconfiguration project, the cell phone lot has been temporarily relocated. There is clear directional signage to the interim lot. When construction is complete, it will be paved and have WiFi, offering an improved customer experience. • The closure of a section of McDonald Road has been postoned untill mid-August. This work is part of the project to extend the east apron for Remote Stand Operations. Once closed, please follow all directional signage to the new McDonald Road, located east of North Service Place. • Work is wrapping up on the curbside enhancement project, which is occurring on the sidewalk along the Departures level. There are construction zones set up along the Departures level that impact sidewalk and curb access. • Work is underway for an expansion to YVR’s international Pier D. As part of the project, various work is currently being done behind the hoarding area between gates D58 and D64. While disruption is expected to be minimal, there may be intermittent noise in this area. • Construction has begun on the North Runway End Safety Area (RESA). All YVR’s runways will have 300-metre RESAs, double the recommended Canadian standards. RESAs protect the travelling public in the unlikely event of an aircraft overrun or undershoot. This construction is expected to be completed in November and will include night-time work. Vancouver Airport Authority is doing its best to minimize impact to YVR’s neighbours in Richmond, Vancouver’s south slope and Burkeville and encourages anyone who has more questions about construction to visit its website or to email RESAinfo@ yvr.ca. • Preparation work is underway as utilities are relocated as part of the above-mentioned North Runway RESA project. Equipment and material will be visible from Ferguson Road. For more information on all these projects, visit yvr.ca/construction.

“WestJet continues its drive toward becoming a global airline and the signing of this agreement marks a major milestone in that journey,” said Ed Sims, WestJet president and CEO. “Working together with Delta, the premier U.S. carrier, we are looking forward to providing enhanced offerings and more choice for guests. The joint venture will allow us to maximize our existing partnership with Delta to benefit customers by bringing greater competition to the trans-border market.” Upon receipt of regulatory approvals in Canada and the U.S., Delta and WestJet will work together to implement all aspects of the enhanced cooperation including expanded codesharing, more closely aligned frequent flyer program and reciprocal elite benefits, joint growth across their U.S./Canada transborder network and co-location at key hubs with more seamless passenger and baggage transit. The

agreement will also include the ability to cooperate on cargo accompanying passenger flights as well as corporate contracts. “Delta’s future is global and together with WestJet, we can augment the two airlines’ capabilities and bring together our strengths in this important trans-border market,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s CEO. “Combined, we will be able to offer more destinations to customers with an integrated network, superior airline products, improved airport connections and significantly enhanced frequent flyer benefits. The JV [joint venture] will provide an unmatched passenger experience for customers travelling between the U.S. and Canada.” WestJet was recently named North America’s Best Low-Cost Airline 2018 by Skytrax. The kiosks free up border security officers to focus more closely on enforcement and intelligence efforts. On Approach with Narinder Pahal Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has been voted Best Airport in North America for a record nine years by the Skytrax World Airport Awards, but it’s the people who work at YVR that make this airport a special place. One of these incredible people who go above and beyond to make YVR an incredible place is Narinder Pahal, who is about to celebrate her 30th anniversary of working at YVR (mostly with HMSHost). During that time, she has seen it all—from terminal expansion to massive passenger growth—while being respon-

sible for providing the airport community with delicious food. Pahal shares some of her experiences at YVR in the following interview. Tell us the beginning of your YVR story. I started working for Cara Operations on July 28, 1988 at YVR. I had worked for Cara at the Canada Place during Expo 86 and that event pretty much put Vancouver on the map. Traffic at the airport really increased and opportunities at YVR were expanding—Vancouver became a place to visit.

What was your first job at YVR? I started off as a cashier/server, serving ice cream/popcorn/coffee in a small unit on Level 2 of the Domestic Terminal Building (DTB), which at that time was check-in for U.S. flights and Domestic Arrivals. Then Level 2 DTB was restructured, Harvey’s and Boston Pizza (BP) opened and I was promoted to supervisor at BP. In 1998, I was given the opportunity to be part of the first Tim Hortons at YVR on Level 3 DTB. Along the way, this became

six locations and I was made operations manager. During my time at YVR, I have also touched on White Spot and Starbucks. At present, I am a multiunit operations manager and catering specialist at HMSHost. This involves overseeing Tim Hortons, Burger King and Production Kitchen; as well as developing menus and creative ideas for special events within the airport. What do you most like about working at YVR and what has kept you coming here for 30 years? I love being part of the airport environment. It’s like being part of a mini city that is on 24/7. I enjoy the people interaction, the fact that no one day is the same, [each day] is very unpredictable and you have to be ready for anything. What are your most cherished memories of the last 30 years? For myself, the memories I cherish the most are mostly to do with people that I have connected with along the way. I was lucky enough to meet people who saw potential in me and gave me opportunities that perhaps I would have otherwise overlooked. And witnessing the growth at YVR has been amazing, it really seems like not too long ago the ITB terminal was built! And now to see the future plans for growth is very exciting. How has the airport changed in the past 30 years? I and many others who have

been part of this environment for a long period of time have witnessed how YVR has become a building not only for the needs of travellers, but also a communitybased operation that has shown how important not only serving but connecting with people can be. It has become more about creating the experience to remember. The services offered within YVR have developed on so many levels. I know at HMSHost, we also strive to come up with new innovative menu ideas to provide guests with something exceptional. Food and beverage standards have developed to higher expectations; we are now engineering more in-house recipes, cooking with higher quality products and focusing more on presentation. Customer service has aligned with hospitality—again to create more of a memorable experience for our guests. What inspires you to keep working at YVR? One of the main reasons I’m inspired to be part of YVR and HMSHost is the prospect of opportunities. Thirty-five years ago, I came from England with a clerical diploma and hopes that I would be working as an office assistant. Little did I know that the people I would meet along the way would set me up in a whole different direction. I was fortunate enough to meet people in Cara and Host that saw potential in

me, they helped me grow, learn and find my talents. A lot of those people have become my second family, their support and dedication unwavering. I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I was meant to be. I am honoured to be part of such a hard-working team that is up for any challenge! What do you like to do away from YVR? When I’m not at YVR I’m usually still thinking about it! This may sound a little crazy, I know, but my creative juices are always thinking of the next event or opportunity and how we can make it extra special. None of this can be possible without family support—my “NoriNation” is always supportive and there for me. I love travelling, going swimming and having “Me Time” at home, which usually consists of Netflix or my next creative project. There is a quote of Albert Einstein that I love: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” I strive to bring a little value to everything I do, it makes what you do much more enjoyable and worthwhile. You are involved with so much of the food at YVR, what do you like to eat? Anything that is gluten free and still tastes amazing; not easy to find!Narinder Pahal and her “NoriNation” team at the opening of the Tim Hortons YVR location,.

HMSHost to end plastic straw use by 2020 Global restaurateur HMSHost, which operates in more than 120 airports around the world and at more than 100 travel plazas in North America, has announced plans to eliminate the use of plastic straws in its North American locations by 2020. It is estimated that approxi-

mately 100-million straws were used at the company’s North American locations in 2017. To meet its objective of ending plastic straw use, HMSHost will work with its expansive portfolio of restaurant brands to reduce waste and find sustainable, innovative alternatives. “At HMSHost, we believe

that each of us can start somewhere to make our world a better place,” said HMSHost president and CEO Steve Johnson. “I’m proud to further our commitment as good corporate citizens with the elimination of plastic straws by 2020. Our position in this industry allows us to lead in the areas of sustainability and envi-

ronmental protection. I encourage our industry peers to join us in this vital step to have a lasting impact for future generations.” HMSHost has already made strides in this sustainability area. Earlier this year, the organization began eliminating plastic cocktail

stirrers in nearly all casual dining locations. HMSHost created two straw-free signature cocktails to raise awareness and further fuel the conversation on social media about the environmental impact of plastic straws and other singleuse plastics, using the hashtag

#NoStraws. HMSHost’s YVR locations include Brioche Doree Café, Burger King, Famous Famiglia, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Vancouver Canucks Bar & Grill, White Spot and Stanley Park Taphouse.

Boeing’s recently released 2018 Pilot & Technician Outlook is projecting demand for 790,000 pilots over the next 20 years. This represents double the current workforce and the most significant demand in the outlook’s nine-year history. According to Boeing’s report, demand is being driven by an anticipated doubling of the global commercial airplane fleet, as well as record-high air travel demand and a tightening labour supply. “Despite strong global air traffic growth, the aviation industry continues to face a pilot labour supply challenge, raising concern about the existence of a global pilot shortage in the near-term,” said Keith Cooper, vice president of train-

ing & professional services, Boeing Global Services. “An emphasis on developing the next generation of pilots is key to help mitigate this. With a network of training campuses and relationships with flight schools around the globe, Boeing partners with customers, governments and educational institutions to help ensure the market is ready to meet this significant pilot demand.” According to Boeing’s Outlook, despite the commercial pilot demand forecast holding nearly steady, maintenance technician demand decreased slightly from 648,000 to 622,000, primarily due to longer maintenance

intervals for new aircraft. Collectively, the business aviation and civil helicopter sectors will demand an additional 155,000 pilots and 132,000 technicians. Demand for commercial cabin crew increased slightly from 839,000 to 858,000, due to changes in fleet mix, regulatory requirements, denser seat configurations and multi-cabin configurations that offer more personalized service. In addition, 32,000 new cabin crew will be required to support business aviation. For more information about Boeing’s Pilot & Technician Outlook, please visit: boeing. com/commercial/market.

New Air Transat service allows pets onboard Air Transat is now offering its passengers in Economy Class the opportunity to travel with their pet in the aircraft’s cabin. Cats and dogs 10 kilograms or less (including the weight of the cage) will now be allowed on most of the carrier’s flights, with the caged animal placed under the seat in front of the traveller. This service is offered on all the airline’s routes, except for

flights to and from Jamaica and Saint Lucia and flights to the United Kingdom and Ireland. If an allergic passenger is seated close to an animal, accommodating measures will be taken once on board. Travellers interested in this new service are invited to reserve their pet’s place through the Information and Seat Selection Center at 1-877-TRANSAT. It will also be possible to make the reservation once at

the airport, but the number of animals travelling in the cabin is limited. The price per flight, per animal in cabin is $50 for domestic, South and U.S. flights and $90 for flights to Europe. Other improvements under development includes a 2,000-lb-increase in payload capacity and an escalation of the A-Check and C-Check intervals from 600/6,000 to 800/8,000 flight hours.

Aston Martin enters the flying sports car niche market Worldwide demand and interest in the production of a flying sports car continues to grow, with Samson Motors Switchblade, Volvo’s Terrafugia TF-X and Tesla’s proposed Model F vehicles being among the best well-known. Enter luxury British carmaker Aston Martin with its hybrid-electric, personal aircraft concept, first seen at the 2018 Farnborough Air Show and which the iconic manufacturer

Aston Martin’s Volante Vision Concept (VVC) is capable of vertical take-off and landing and features plenty of highspec details for which the Aston Martin brand is famed. The Volante, which is named after the Italian word for “flying,” was produced in partnership with the U.K.’s Cranfield

University and is powered by Rolls-Royce with the aim of bringing “luxury personal transportation to the sky.” Aston Martin says it has yet to price the vehicle, but the figure is expected to be almost CAD$12-million. Buyers will have some time to wait, though. The marque is currently conducting customer research and analyzing feedback, which, if positive, would mean a production date in the

Star Alliance expands connection service to help with tight connecting flights The Star Alliance Connection Service is now available at Toronto Pearson Airport to assist passengers with tight connections between two Star Alliance member airline flights. Toronto is the 13th biggest Star Alliance transfer hub world-wide, with more than 400,000 passengers connecting from one Star Alliance carrier to another each year. Dedicated Connection Service staff use special soft-

ware to monitor the transfer window for customers with onward flights. Cases where passengers and checked bags appear in danger of missing a connection are automatically highlighted. The Connection Service agent can thereby already consider the various options available to ensure that the customer reaches the onward flight or, if necessary, book alternative options before the inbound flight lands.

In addition to home carrier Air Canada, the following Star Alliance member carriers departing from Vancouver serve Toronto: Eva Air, Lufthansa and United. “Connection Service helps enhance the airport experience for our customers travelling on Star Alliance itineraries by streamlining the behind-thescenes processing when handling tight connections which

may arise, said Benjamin Smith, president, airlines and chief operating officer at Air Canada. “This further strengthens the position of our Toronto Pearson global hub offering convenient connections to almost anywhere in the world.” Star Alliance has been operating Connection Centres for more than a decade. In place at 11 hub airports, these have largely been working behind the scenes on

Aeroplan signs three new airlines, rejects Air Canada buyout Aimia Inc., the data analytics company that manages the Aeroplan loyalty program, has signed partnership agreements with two more Canadian airlines that will take effect in about two years, after its current agreement with Air Canada ends in 2020. Aimia’s new partners are leisure airline Air Transat and the newly formed no-frills Flair Airlines. Those airlines join Toronto-based Porter Airlines as recent partners in the Aeroplan points system, which Air Canada has said it will replace with its own loyalty points program when its Aimia contract expires. Last month, Air Canada led a consortium of bidders that included the Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Visa Canada Corporation to buy the Aeroplan loyalty program from Aimia for $250-million cash plus $2-billion of points liability, an offer that Aimia rejected. Aimia has said it remains open to negotiating with Air Canada and indicated that it would consider an offer of at least $450-million cash.

expediting checked bags at risk of missing their onward flight. In addition, assisting passengers with tight connections was an additional service offered in Frankfurt, Houston and Munich. As part of the Alliance’s strategy of further improving the customer journey, the Star Alliance Connection Service brand was rolled out in 2017, along with the plan of adding passenger assistance at all locations and expanding the overall product to more locations. Chicago (ORD) was the first airport where the Connections

Services brand was introduced and passenger assistance added to the baggage expedite. With Toronto (YYZ) now also offering Connection Service, the combined passenger and baggage expedite is now available at the following Star Alliance hubs: Chicago (ORD), Frankfurt (FRA), Houston (IAH), Munich (MUC) and Toronto (YYZ). At present, baggage-only expedite is offered at Denver (DEN), London (LHR), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO) and Washington (IAD).

Born out of Air Canada’s frequent flyer program, Aeroplan affords customers the ability to accumulate points from flying, but also on purchases at partner retailers and services and by using special affiliated credit cards.

Benjamin Li, general manager of Hong Kong Airlines Vancouver office (left); and Ross Hetherington, CEO Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon, celebrate the partnership between their organizations.

Hong Kong Airlines celebrated the first anniversary of its Vancouver – Hong Kong service by partnering with the MakeA-Wish Foundation, British Columbia & Yukon chapter and donating 10 round-trip Economy Class tickets to eligible children represented by the charity. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants life-changing wishes to children suffering from critical illnesses. Since its establishment in 1980, through the help of donors and volunteers, the organization has granted nearly 450,000 wishes worldwide. Along with providing its popular Vancouver-Hong Kong service from YVR, Hong Kong Airlines looked at ways in which to strengthen its commitment and involvement with the local com-

munity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s vision in granting the wishes of every eligible child was viewed by the airline as a meaningful service. The 10 round-trip Economy Class tickets that Hong Kong Airlines is donating to the cause will provide eligible children and their families with air travel to Asian destinations within the airline’s ever-expanding network. “Hong Kong Airlines’ partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation reaffirms our commitment to the Canadian market, as we celebrate the first anniversary of our Vancouver – Hong Kong service,” said George Liu, chief marketing officer of Hong Kong Airlines. “We are delighted to contribute to the local community, in what we believe to be a very meaningful cause and

help make the travel wishes of children come true.” To provide greater flexibility to travellers, all tickets will be valid for travel throughout 2018 and 2019. “It’s gratifying to know that Hong Kong Airlines, with its global presence, is still focused on helping at a local level,” said Ross Hetherington, CEO, Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon. “Approximately two-thirds of all our wishes involve travel; the generosity of Hong Kong Airlines will help us extend our reach dramatically. This partnership is going to help some special wishes take flight, and we’re really excited about the possibilities.” For more information on Hong Kong Airlines’ flights from YVR, visit hongkongairlines. com.

A giant leap toward space tourism In April 2018, Californiabased space technology start-up Orion Span announced its plans to launch Aurora Station, the world’s first luxury space hotel. The concept station envisions a capacity of six people—two crew and four tourists. According to founder and CEO of Orion Span, Frank Bunger, who will be speaking at Future Travel Experience Global 2018 in Las Vegas, September 1-12, 2018, the commercial station will be deployed in low Earth orbit in 2021 and will provide a turnkey space destination. “Aurora Station will launch in late 2021, with the first guests going up in early 2022,” said Bunger. “It will replicate an authentic astronaut experience, with added luxuries. While onboard, guests will take in breathtaking views from large windows located throughout the

station. They will see 16 spectacular sunrises and sunsets each day, experience the northern and southern aurora and will have the opportunity to soar over their hometowns from 200 miles above Earth. “In addition, guests will take part in research experiments such as growing food while in orbit, partake in an immersive virtual reality experience on the holodeck, experience weightlessness and stay in touch with their loved ones back home via high-speed wireless internet access that allows for video and live streaming. We will also offer top-notch space food for our guests.” A trip to Aurora Station will start at US$9.5-million, considerable cheaper than the estimated $20- to $40-million private citizens paid for trips to the International Space Station between 2001 and 2009.

The award-winning Richmond World Festival will once again present a smorgasbord of music, arts, food and culture from around the globe on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 in Richmond’s Minoru Park. Admission is free. “Richmond is recognized internationally as a model for cultural diversity and harmony,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The Richmond World Festival celebrates that diversity and we’re excited to present a stellar line-up of music, food and the arts that showcases our many cultures, our community and Canada at their best.” Canadian and international music icons Lights and Magic! will headline the 4th annual event, which will feature more than 90 artists performing on nine stages, serving up rich slices of African, Asian, North and South American, European, South Pacific and Caribbean cultures. Headlining the main stage on Friday, August 31, Lights is a riveting performer and innovative songwriter. The alt-pop phenomenon has built a passionate fanbase, selling out tours around the world, earning 100-million U.S. streams and two Juno Awards, plus more than two-million online fans who follow her every move. Then came En, short for Enaia, a fictional character from a fictional world created in Lights’ imagination. Throughout a year long process, she began working on writing and drawing her own comic book based around this alter ego of sorts. And an album to coincide with the whole thing—Skin&Earth, the Canadian singer’s ground-breaking fourth record. Magic! is a Toronto-bred, LosAngeles-based quartet who scored the song of the summer, Rude—a buoyant reggae-pop tune that held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks, charted in 41 countries, sold more than 10-million singles and boasts more than one-billion views on VEVO.

Magic! will headline the Richmond World Festival main stage on Saturday, September 1. Also performing on the main stage on September 1 will be platinum-certified up-and-coming Canadian duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine. Serving up their self-proclaimed “immigrant bass music”, Desi Sub Culture will encapsulate the spirit of the Richmond World Festival, when they hit the main stage on Friday, August 31. “We are a nation of immigrants and we need a new narrative. The world we see on stage, on TV, in Hollywood and Bollywood movies, does not represent the real world. The real world is brown, black, white, yellow, red, and beige. It’s complicated. We are the kids of Asian immigrants. We grew up listening to Run DMC and Apna Sangeet. We celebrated Christmas like everyone else, except our big dinner was chicken curry and roti. We grew up between worlds. Our music is the musical version of ourselves, our upbringing, our identity.” Other highlights include the FEASTival of Flavours with more than 50 food trucks presenting cuisines from all over the globe and the Culinary Stage featuring top local chefs. There’s also the Global Village with interactive cultural activities and performances; the Bamboo Theatre and Digital Carnival, both offering diverse and innovative performances; Africa Zone cultural pavilion, Artisan Marketplace and Imagination World at the Richmond Public Library. The Richmond World Festival takes place from 4pm to 10pm on Friday, August 31 and from 11am to 10pm on Saturday, September 1. Watch for additional event details to be announced soon at richmondworldfestival.com and for updates follow @FunRichmond, on Twitter #RichmondWorldFest.

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

Auto depreciation, an expense to be considered

Auto Repair Services you can count on! Few car owners think of the cost of depreciation when they buy a new vehicle. This, however, is a cost that should be considered when a vehicle purchase is being considered. Depreciation is an accounting method that is used to reduce the value of an asset with the passage of time, due to wear and tear. Once a car is purchased, its value drops as soon as it leaves the showroom—as much as $8,900 one minute after leaving the car lot, according to the Omni Car Depreciation Calculator. Here’s an example of two car purchases: Purchaser One buys a brandnew, luxury sports BMW 645Ci for $99,000 (base price) in 2006. Purchaser Two buys the same vehicle four years later, with only 45,000 kilometres on the odometer, for $37,500. That’s a depreciation on the vehicle of $61,500 in only four years! Put another way: Purchaser One paid $1.36 for every kilometre driven or approximately $15,000 per year in depreciation. While this may be an extreme example, it is a very important financial consideration and, as an auto service professional, one that I recommend be considered when making a new vehicle purchase. Car owners are rightly concerned about the cost of automotive repairs, but it is extremely rare for maintenance and repairs to cost close to that $15,000 depreciation figure.

In the extremely unusual event that the car did need such costly repairs in one year, it is most unlikely that such costs would reoccur. Now, back to the example of Purchaser Two’s second-hand 2006 BMW 645Ci. At $37,500, it is a real bargain and, if properly maintained, would be worth at least $10,000 minimum five years later. Purchaser Two will only lose $27,500 to depreciation. If only 45,000 kilometres are driven, the cost would be only $0.61 per kilometre or $6,900 per year in depreciation. This car, as it ages, will no doubt need some repairs, but I would be hard pressed to imagine a $10,000 repair bill on this type of luxury vehicle. If, however, a repair expense of $10,000 were added to the $27,500 depreciation, cost would be $37,500 total or $0.83 per kilometre. Still a substantially lower cost compared with Purchaser One’s $61,000 depreciation figure. Perhaps the downside is that Purchaser Two of the used BMW Solution for August 2018 Crossword.

will not have the prestige and cachet that comes with driving a brand-new vehicle but will still has a wonderful vehicle that will be very reliable. Purchaser Two will also have extra cash to spend on other things or to invest wisely. This is an extreme example of depreciation, but it applies across the board with any vehicle. Additionally, this equation does not include financing costs, a further expense. Naturally, financing costs would be much higher because of the high price of the new vehicle. So next time you are faced with a large auto repair bill, consider the fact that compared to depreciation it may not be all that high.

The winner’s name will be published in the September 2018 edition of SkyTalk and at skytalkonline.com.

Developed as Boeing’s first jet airliner, the 707 is a swept-wing design with podded engines. Although it was not the first jetliner in service, the 707 was the first to be commercially successful. Dominating passenger air transport in the 1960s and remaining common through the 1970s, the 707 is generally credited with ushering in the Jet Age.
