What motivates us at skywalk. When you work in the paragliding scene, people quickly get that idea that you have »turned your

[16]

hobby into your profession«. The truth in my case, however, is that I derive a lot of pleasure from shaping ideas, introducing them into a community, and then nurturing the impulses that emerge from them. To do this successfully in product development, it is necessary to follow not only the mainstream, but also new, sometimes extraordinary paths. Equally important is listening to pilots, identifying needs, and then satisfying them with suitable products. That’s exactly what we enjoy so much at skywalk and what motivates us every day. Working together as a team, we think about what the paragliding scene needs and, most importantly, what it might need in the future ... Out of this passion, we create unique products such as the ARAK, the BREEZE or our new X-ALPS glider. Decisively shaping this development process is a privilege we have enjoyed here at skywalk for almost 20 years now. It motivates us and at least for now we haven’t yet run out of ideas. So we look forward to writing a significant part of paragliding history in the future. :-)

Tenerife - Punta de Higaldo If you wanted to fly that day in the bay of Punta de Higaldo, you needed sure instincts. For Tenerife‘s notorious northwest wind was far too strong for the official launch site. Stephan and Rolf kited up their TEQUILAs directly on the water and let the wind carry them over the prickly cactus. Their reward: an hours-long soaring session that ended only when the sun disappeared below the horizon. To the delight of photographer Tristan, the thermal stretched far out over the Atlantic. Stephan‘s swoop session earned the skywalk developer the honor of this year‘s »MAGALOG title hero« - our little internal crown that our team pilots fight for during the photo sessions of the French star photographer. May Stephan wear it with dignity. Until the next trip, when Tristan once again calls out his much anticipated »we have a winner!« :-)

Tour de Mont Blanc The valley of Chamonix is a magnet. Why? It‘s not easy to describe. But whoever was there succumbs to the fascination of Mont Blanc. And always comes back. 6

“Goose bumps”

ight minutes. Change cable cars. Eight minutes. You’re there. The journey to the Aiguille du Midi does not take long. In just 16 minutes, the breathtakingly constructed cable car takes us up to 3777 meters, where we now stand 3000 meters above probably the most famous place in the Alps. Chamonix looks tiny far below us. Goose bumps. We feel a bit like astronauts inspecting the earth from their capsule. The cable car station towers like a fortress in the middle of the highest peaks, the steepest rock faces and the most magnificent glaciers of the Alps. 7

8

Just like in another galaxy: The rugged glacial ruptures of the Mont Blanc massif are fascinating and daunting at the same time.

Europe‘s highest point seems within reach - a stone‘s throw away - if it weren’t for those two 4,000-meter mountains with their treacherous ice fields between them.

Goose Bumps at the Aiguille du Midi On the wind-sheltered side of the Aiguille du Midi viewing platform, warmed by the sun today, we get an impression of the fascination that the Mont Blanc massif has exerted on adventurers from all over the world for centuries. Edward Whymper, first climber of the Matterhorn, mountaineering legend Walter Bonatti or speedclimber Ueli Steck. There is probably no great alpinist who has not succumbed to this magic. Ever since the first ascent of the highest mountain in Europe almost 250 years ago, the French town at the foot of Mont Blanc has regularly written mountaineering history. If you’re a big fan, Chamonix is the place for you to live out your passion for mountains and possibly set a new personal best record.

Sightseeing am Brevént We too are fascinated by Chamonix. We want to use a few quiet late summer days to get to know the area. After a few exploratory flights on the glacier-covered north side, we chosse the historic launch site Planpraz.

“We feel like astronauts“

Top of Europe: Only a few steps to the Mont Blanc summit. At 4807 meters the air starts to get thin

9

Mont Blanc always in view: The white peak of Europe‘s highest mountain towers regally over the valley of Chamonix.

10

“The ‚Drus‘ and ‚Aiguilles‘ in Sight“ Beep beep beep. 1.5 meters, 1.8 meters, 2.5, 3.0 meters per second. At the speed of the Aiguille du Midi cable car we climb out over the Planpraz launch site. The unusually gentle thermals carry us up to 3,000 meters. Once again we feel goose bumps. For a long time, »Le Brevént« was the starting point for the longest cross-country flights in the Alps. Since 2003, the route of the Red Bull X-Alps has regularly taken pilots past here. Our friend Simon Oberrauner is flying today somewhere in the huge ice flanks on the other side of the valley. He has come up with a special birthday present for his brother. They want to climb Mont Blanc on foot and fly down together in tandem. For Simon »only« an extraordinary training stage for the next Red Bull X-Alps, for us an unimaginable achievement. 2500 meters of ascent in one day in the thin mountain air? We prefer to fly up and down the Chamonix valley basin and enjoy the view of the impressive Mont Blanc massif in the warm late summer air. The »Drus« and »Aiguilles« in view and an adventure story of Walter Bonatti in mind...

The best time to visit Chamonix is late summer and autumn. By then the enormous temperature differences between the icy four-thousand-meter summits of the Mont Blanc massif and the sunny southern slopes of the Brevént ridge are smaller and the air calms down. During the summer months, from 1 July to 31 August, flying is prohibited on the south side of the valley so as not to jeopardize helicopter operations.

Imagine growing up in a delicatessen. The shelves are filled with delicacies from all over the world. And every day a truck brings exquisite fruits, fresh crustaceans, fragrant ham and nice-smelling pastries. Thomas Friedrich grew up in such a delicatessen - his father‘s flight school. It goes without saying that he developed a preference for very special delicacies as a child: 5-course flying meals. 12

School of Schöckl At 14, Tom’s dad allowed him to fly in the thermals and go on XC flights. He flew his first 200-kilometer FAI triangle in 2017, just after he turned 16.

One of Tom‘s favorite mountains is the Schöckl - a fine flying site between the high mountains of the Alps and the hills of southern Styria. At the local mountain of the Graz flying community you can soar for hours, fly in the thermals and top land in between. But to fly XC from the mountain, which is only 1400 meters high, you need more than just a good flying technique. You need patience, a feeling for the right moment, and knowledge of weather and terrain that extends far beyond your local horizon. Schöckl has already shaped talents like Paul Guschlbauer and Simon Oberrauner. The two X-Alps athletes got Tom interested in hike & fly, vol bivi and adventure travel when he was a teenager. Simon Oberrauner, who is almost ten years older and completed his A-license at his dad’s flying school at the same time as Thomas, is now one of Tom‘s closest friends. In 2017, Thomas accompanied his friend as a supporter on the toughest adventure race in the world. His job above all was to sniff out the thermals so that the X-Alps athlete can find his way from Salzburg to Monaco as efficiently as possible. In 2018 Thomas made his debut at the »Ironfly«, an Italian version of the Red Bull-X Alps lasting several days. He was one of the fastest to circle the course of 458 kilometers with six turning points in the Western Alps. In front of him: only Simon Oberrauner and the international elite of adventure pilots. On the way he quickly celebrates his 17th birthday. In 2019 Thomas Friedrich will turn 18. He has already taken the summer off to support Simon Oberrauner again at the Red Bull X-Alps. As an appetizer, so to speak, because in 2021 he would like to take part in the adventure race himself: the main course of his flying 5-course meal... 13

Eventually they all come down!? More safety with modern reserve chutes Text: Christoph Kirsch Photos and Graphics: skywalk

N

obody likes to buy a pig in a poke. That‘s why every pilot tests his new glider extensively before buying it. The same goes for the harness. Personal preferences about handling, comfort, and flying feel are crucial before the purchase decision is made. But the decision for a reserve chute is completely different, because who voluntarily tosses his reserve chute? Is it worth it to buy a new one? And what is currently state-of-the-art? Cruciform reserve chutes have many advantages over conventional round canopies. Two advantages are already notice-

14

There has been a lot of activity in the market for reserve chutes in recent years. New concepts are replacing the round canopies originally developed for parachuting and the military. The so-called Âťcruciform canopiesÂŤ have become especially popular. They offer many advantages over conventional round canopies with similarly low complexity. able without testing the reserve chute or even using it in an emergency: cruciform chutes are significantly lighter and have a smaller packing size than conventional round canopies. The reason is that, due to their design, with the same surface area, the projected area is larger - and the latter is largely responsible for the sink rate of the system. A cruciform chute with the same projected area requires less material. Combined with modern lightweight materials, the weight and volume of a modern cruciform chute such as the skywalk PEP-

PER CROSS LIGHT are around one-third less than those of conventional round canopies. The lower weight not only has a positive effect in your ruckpack, but also in the worst case: deployment is easier because you need less strength to toss it. This can be a priceless advantage, especially with high G-forces.

Faster Deployment Important (critical!) advantages of cruciform chutes are their opening time and pendular stability. Because cruciform chutes have a lower overall height than 15

Elaborate construction: Delcotex‘s lightweight material used in the PEPPER CROSS LIGHT weighs only 22 grams per 10,000 meters of thread. The value is given in the unit dtex. Harnesses Shuttle Warp yarn Filling yarn Back beam

pear-shaped round caps due to their design, the full surface can unfold more quickly. Openings at the four corners of the cross cap allow the air to escape in a controlled manner and significantly dampen any oscillating movements. Higher pendular stability means less dynamics and thus a significantly lower risk of injury during »landing«.

Forward motion When talking about cruciform chutes, there is often a lively discussion about the topic of »forward motion«. From a purely mathematical point of view, gliding reduces the vertical sink rate of a reserve chute. This would make it possible to save weight by reducing the area even more. In the event of an impact, however, the drift quickly has a negative effect, especially if the pilot in an emergency situation is being pushed towards an obstacle by the valley breeze. sky walk´s cruciform chutes are symmetrically constructed and do not have a system-induced forward motion. Large surface areas minimize the sink rate.

The »20 percent rule« no longer applies. The ideal size of the reserve chute is discussed just as often as the topic of drift. How hard is the impact when the reserve is very small? Will a reserve that is too large lift me up if I get into a thermal after deployment? For a long time, the »20 percent rule« offered some help. It says that the maximum load of a reserve chute should be 20 percent above the take-off weight. So a pilot with a take-off weight of 100 kilos should choose a reserve chute with a permissible load of around 120 kilos. The source of this widespread opinion was the long-established LTF test method, which permits a maximum sink rate of 6.8 m/s. This value corresponds to a jump from a height of 2.4 meters - so it was a good idea to choose a slightly larger reserve chute. Today, reserve chutes are additionally tested according to the EN test procedure. Its limit value is significantly lower at 5.5 m/s, which corresponds to a jump from a height of 1.5 meters. So EN-tested rescue systems

on your equipment.

Modern reserve chutes are allowed to have a maximum sink rate of 5.5 m/s. This corresponds to a jump from a height of 1.5 meters.

offer sufficient safety reserves even if the chute is chosen close to the maximum permitted upper limit. High wing loading also has a positive effect on pendular stability.

Complex Manufacturing Process It sounds crazy: Just a few years ago a complete paraglider kit weighed almost 20 kilograms - or even more. Today, you don’t have to put your gear on a big diet to lose half your weight. The lightweight material used in the PEPPER CROSS LIGHT from the German manufacturer Delcotex weighs only 22 grams per 10,000 meters of thread. The value is given in the unit dtex. »The finer the yarns to be processed, the more complex the entire production process. To manufacture economically, the weaving machine must run at the highest possible speed. This in turn causes high mechanical loads on the individual, extremely fine threads. Finding the right fine tuning here is certainly one of the greatest challenges. Furthermore, trou-

bleshooting warp or weft breaks is much more difficult due to the yarn’s extremely high fineness. It is simply very difficult to see the individual thread! Our employees’ many years of experience really pay off with such demanding products« - says Carl Mrusek, Head of Business Development at Delcotex.

Available in three sizes, the PEPPER CROSS LIGHT sets new standards in deployment time and pendular stability, and packing size and weight. From just 990 grams, it is one of the lightest rescue systems on the market. Our SALSA, also available in three sizes, has the same construction as the PEPPER CROSS LIGHT, originally developed for the Red Bull X-Alps, and enables a low-cost entry into the world of cruciform canopy technology.

ADVENTURE

Austria

On the Northern Alpine Trail from Vienna to Lake Constance

Express

942 km distance – 31,600 vertical meters

The »Northern Alpine Trail« is one of the most interesting hiking routes in the Alps. The »Weitwanderweg 01« (long-distance hiking trail 01) crosses Austria from the capital Vienna in the east to Bregenz on Lake Constance over a distance of about 1,000 kilometers. Andreas Viehböck attempted to follow the route with a paraglider.

>

Andreas is hooked. After having supported Paul Guschlbauer in the Red Bull X-Alps in 2017, he was determined to go on a similar adventure himself. The challenge: The professional mountain biker had only started paragliding two years earlier. Most of the time the downhill expert flew a miniwing. For him, the paraglider was above all a piece of equipment for sports and training with which he could climb his local mountains quickly and easily. After the first cross-country flights with the SPICE, he felt ready for his own private X-Alps. With the Northern Alpine Trail he quickly found a way to fulfill his desire to get to know his home country better. Without complicated logistics. The »01« trail crosses the whole width and almost the entire length of the Al-

pine republic. Perfect for the man from Upper Austria because the tour begins virtually on his doorstep. His RANGE X-ALPS2 harness had enough room for all his equipment, and during the tour he planned to meet his supporter Björn Hunger only to replenish food supplies, charge batteries and shoot some nice films and photos.

Launching from the »Big Wall« Ahead of Andreas Viehböck lies a distance of 500 kilometers as the crow flies. It’s a route worthy of the X-Alps because Andreas’ can only tackle it in September for work-related reasons. The days are shorter and the thermals considerably weaker. Advantage: The danger of overdevelopment and unpleasant valley breezes is lower in late summer. Normally ... 19

“Day 4 was the best flying day of my XC career so far!“ The Hohe Wand mountain is located almost exactly at the easternmost point of the Austrian Alps. The »Big Wall« - the local mountain of the Viennese paragliding scene - is the starting point for the tour for which Andreas plans to take a 20-day break from everyday life. On good days, the Hohe Wand is a springboard for a thermal connection to the Alps. But as is so often the case in flying, the weather doesn’t always play along. For Andreas Viehböck, this means he has to start his project with a long hike. Nevertheless, he completes 50 kilometers by the evening. In stormy conditions he sets up his first evening camp at Schneeberg.

In X-Alps style The Schneeberg welcomes Andreas the next morning with moderate thermals. But with a few top landings and climbs he is able to make some distance in X-Alps style in a westerly direction beneath the ARAK, which he had chosen for his project. »On the third day of my journey, a massive cold front from the north moved through Austria and I had to divert to the south, away from the route of the Northern Alpine Route. The higher Alps were too dangerous until further notice«, says Andreas as he recalls the route he took. With a fantastic evening flight from the »Mand« he manages to reach Grimming 20

in the Enns Valley. Despite some adverse weather, he once again completes 50 kilometers and is ahead of his time target.

Over the Dachstein »Day 4 was the best flight day of my XC career so far«, gushes Andreas. After an easy hike up, he launches from the Grimming summit and flies over the Dachstein to the Pongau region. Satisfied, Andreas crawls into his sleeping bag, having abandoned the Northern Alpine Trail. Because of the windy weather, he hopes to make distance in the air quickly and comfortably along the Pinzgau XC »raceway« in the next few days. Despite Andreas’ excellent condition and good preparation, the efforts of the first few days are slowly catching up with him. On the eleventh day of his adventure trip he reaches the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck. Big blisters on his feet force him to take a break. The Pinzgau arena gave him the cold shoulder, and instead of following long cloud streets, Andreas had to master his daily goal of 50 kilometers with lots of exhausting hikes and extended glides.

ger flight drop to zero. Andreas wants to finish his project successfully no matter what. Too impressive are the day hikes through mountains and on trails he has never experienced before. After a day’s break, the blisters have healed enough that he can continue his trip. He decides to hike the remaining 180 kilometers to Lake Constance on hiking trails and side roads. After three long daily stages he arrives overjoyed at Lake Constance at nine o’clock in the evening on the fourteenth day of his journey. He leaves behind a boatload of experiences: 702.4 kilometers and 31,655 vertical meters of hiking and 240.5 kilometers of XC flying. A result just as impressive as that of many Red Bull X-Alps athletes! »For me it was a great project. Above all, I learned a lot while flying,« says the mountain bike ace as he looks forward to his next paragliding adventure. At the Red Bull X-Alps 2019 he will once again be a supporter.

On foot through the Allgäu The blisters are now joined by more bad weather. The forecast for the next few days is predicting cold temperatures and lots of wind. The chances of a lon-

7 summits

Three days. Seven summits. 9,000 vertical meters. Michael Schneider is a mountain climber and paraglider pilot. And he likes to do both fast and lightweight. With the ÂťSeven SummitsÂŤ he has picked out a particularly exciting project. The ascent of the seven most characteristic mountains of the Stubai Valley. Launch from the summit included. No tourism gag: The Seven Summits of the Stubai Valley are a selection of very special peaks. Nobody has ever flown them with a paraglider before.

them in the Eastern Alpine style. Up and down in one day. With light luggage. And best of all several summits in one day. After intensive preparation with maps, route descriptions and internet information, he decides on three day-tours. The challenge: when selecting the »Seven Summits«, the Stubai mountain guides probably didn’t have paragliders in mind ...

24

reat mountain climbers have great goals. An eight-thousander. Or at best all fourteen. The »Seven Summits«, the seven highest summits of the seven continents of our planet, are just as demanding. But why head off to the Great Beyond? The most interesting destinations are often right on our doorstep. The mountain guides of the Tyrolean Stubai Valley believe this and have selected the seven strongest character summits from over 500 peaks of their home valley - the »Seven Summits of the Stubai Valley«. The idea is much more than the simple wish of innovative tourism managers to attract more guests. Because hidden behind the seven summits are high alpine destinations, exciting mountain tours and challenging hikes. »These summits tell special stories, shape the landscape and leave a special impression,« say the Stubai mountain guides. What they all have in common is their impressive panorama. Whoever climbs them all gets a complete picture of the 35-kilometer-long valley, which stretches from Mediterranean Innsbruck in the north to the ice-covered Italian border on the main Alpine ridge. And as a reward a small trophy ... Michael »Michi« Schneider is very familiar with the Stubai Valley. He has already climbed many peaks with sneakers, mountain boots and touring skis. But he has only flown over a handful of them with a paraglider. In the tour book of the passionate paragliding alpinist, mountains like the Wilder Freiger, the Zuckerhütl, the Habicht and many other classics were missing until recently. When the skywalk employee heard about the Seven Summits, it quickly became clear that he wanted to conquer

Stage 1: Rinnenspitze (3003 meters) and Hoher Burgstall (2611 meters) After an early start at the Oberris pasture in the Oberberg Valley, Michi Schneider quicky gets his first stamp in his Seven Summits map. By early morning he reaches the Rinnenspitze full of joy. As he had hoped, thermals were already drifting up the eastern slope, so that with a little care he was able to kite up his little TONKA on a rock ledge. At 3,003 meters above sea level, the Rinnenspitze is considered to be the easiest three-thousander to climb in the Stubai Valley. A smaller peak, its exposed summit ridge offers a high alpine ambience. Deeply impressed by the scenery, Michi rushes down into the valley with his 12-square-meter glider to tackle his second stage goal from the Bärenbad Hotel: the Hohe Burgstall, where Sir Edmund Hillary trained for his expedition to Mount Everest in the 1950s. »At the Hohen Burgstall I had almost ideal launch conditions, and I had a great glide down to Neustift«, says, Michi Schneider, pleased about the successful conclusion of the first stage of his adventure.

Stage 2 Habicht (3277meters), Elfer (2505 meters, Serles (2717 meters) The next light-wind weather situation is not long in coming. With the Habicht, Elfer and Serles peaks, Michi Schneider wants to master three summits and 4,000 meters of altitude in one day on the second stage of his Seven Summits project.

Destination reached: On the summit of the Wilder Freiger.

The employees of the tourist office are amazed ...:

“You flew the route

Again, he sets off early. His first goal of the day is 1,900 meters above the valley floor. For well-trained mountain climbers the Habicht is a fun day trip, for Michi only an intermediate goal. His plan is to fly directly from Habicht to Elfer and to land below the summit to minimize his climb to the second summit of the day. But before that he has to find a launch site. »On the Habicht, you can’t launch directly from the summit«, sums up the paraalpinist. »Unfortunately, I had to climb back down again and find a place to lay out the Tonka on some hardpack«. Michis plan is successful and, after a flight through the barren and rugged landscape around Innsbruck’s local mountain, he’s able to land shortly after on a meadow ridge above the summit station of the »Elfer« paragliding site. With an ascent of only 300 meters, he reaches his second goal for the day at noon. »The weather was phenomenal, no signs of overdevelopment or rain showers at all«. The thermals are now so strong that he manages to fly over the 2,502 meter high Elfer before gliding to Kampl, starting point for the third and final summit of the day. Now he grits his teeth, because 1,600 vertical meters await him at the Serles. »When I finally reached the top, it was an indescribable feeling,« enthuses Michi. »From the Serles I could pretty much see the whole distance I had covered since the morning«. Nevertheless, Michi Schneider doesn’t stick around for long. Ten minutes later he’s standing next to his car at the Feuerstein Hotel in the Gschnitzer valley.

with a paragliding? No one has ever done that before!”

Stage 3: Wilder Freiger (3418 meters) and Zuckerhütl (3507 meters) Michael Schneider can hardly believe that there are only two summits left on his Seven Summits map. »The Wilder Freiger and above all the Zuckerhütl were actually the reason for my project! I’ve wanted to climb them for a long time! Both are high alpine peaks with long ascents over large glaciers. Michi Schneider wants to take advantage of his paraglider and fly both in one day. « The next weather situation with little winds aloft has arrived. From the Grawa pasture, a popular starting point for tours, he climbs a largely self-created route via the Sulzenau hut to the Wilder Freiger. Arriving at the Signalgipfel, a pre-summit, he is greeted by perfect clouds and wind conditions. From the Wilder Freiger, the line to Zuckerhütl is clearly visible. Over glaciers, ridges and blocky terrain, the route takes him over the Wilder Pfaff, another Stubai classic that towers almost 50 meters above the Wilder Freiger. He’s done it. Michael Schneider is overwhelmed. Although the day is perfect for mountain climbing, he is completely alone atop the Zuckerhütl, the highest peak of the Stubai Alps. He makes the last tear in his map. The Seven Summits have been conquered! The launch from the glacier is routine. The flight over the jagged icefalls and crevasses is all the more impressive. The employees of the tourist office are amazed when Michael Schneider picks up his trophy made of Swiss stone pine on his way home.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Passion for Technology skywalk paragliders are packed full of sophisticated technology - mini ribs, C-wires, 3D-shaping and co. improve your glider’s performance and make it safer. The pictograms below show you the technologies that you’ll find in each of our models on the following pages. All sky walk gliders have one thing in common: the patented »JET FLAP« system that improves slow-flight behavior right up to the stall point, extends the green arc, and at the same time improves climbing performance!

Explanation of all skywalk Product-Feature-Icons Which technologies will you find in your skywalk glider? JET FLAP: Our JET FLAPS extend the green arc as you approach the stall point, which substantially increases safety and also improves climb performance.

3 Line Levels: The 3-line-level concept reduces the number of lines and the resulting drag. Advantages: more performance and a better overview at launch.

Rigid Foil: The Rigid Foil nylon wires on the leading edge help maintain its shape and ensure constant ram air pressure. Advantages: better takeoff behavior, more performance and lower canopy weight. 3D-Shaping: A precise calculation of the leading edge geometry and the installation of an additional strip of fabric reduce wrinkling in this sensitive part of the glider. Advantages: exact wing shape, more performance.

C-Wires: C-wires are nylon wires sewn into the glider over the anchor points of the C-level lines. Advantages: better load distribution, reduced drag, more performance.

Mini Ribs: Doubling the number of cells at the trailing edge increases its shape stability substantially. Advantage: fewer vortices improve the aerodynamics and with it the performance.

Automatic Sand Release System: Porous openings of the profile ribs at the trailing edge ensure that sand and dirt in the glider are automatically guided to the wingtip where they can trickle out. This helps preserve the material and »relieves« the trailing edge.

Loops & Hooks: Our loops and straps on the top sail make it possible to lay out the canopy in the most difficult alpine terrain.

Shark Nose: Together with a corresponding wing design, the shark nose technology improves pressure distribution in the canopy substantially. Advantages: much more solid flying feeling and substantial performance gain, especially when gliding on bar.

Speed Control Handle: Handle on rear riser which allows the pilot to even out turbulence, speed and pitch while flying on speed bar without having to release the speed bar.

Our focus was on developing an easy-to-fly intermediate with playful handling that helps the pilot keep his cool in the toughest conditions. Its performance ensures that even the most demanding XC pilots achieve their ambitious goals«, enthuses Alex Höllwarth. In the choice of materials, we considered the needs of both frequent flyers and Hike&-

Fly pilots: Thanks to the innovative material combination, the ARAK can be packed compactly and fits easily into modern Hike & Fly rucksacks. However, the glider is tough enough to handle extensive ground handling sessions or playful flying in the dunes. There are no limits to your flying horizon. From advancing novice to professional, from Hike&Fly enthusiast to adventurer with the ARAK you always have a reliable partner for every need! 27

TEQUILA Clear head. For what matters. The TEQUILA is our recreational wing for pilots who are just starting out, switching classes, or working their way up. It combines amazingly simple handling with very easy-to-use performance. The wing design ensures that the TEQUILA5 is exceptionally quiet in the air. Especially in restless air, the TEQUILA5 is a stable platform to cut a smooth line. Its agreeable damping gives you a feeling of confidence and safety, right from your first turn in the thermals. The TEQUILA5 is easy to center in thermals and climbs almost by itself. Brake pressure increases linearly and its balanced handling lets you set your bank angle precisely.

TEQUILA

We put special emphasis on the simple operation of rapid descent aids, so even occasional pilots can keep their cool when it‘s time to get down in a hurry.

LIGHTWEIGHT PARAGLIDERS

MASALA Freedom. Every day. The MASALA is the glider for all Hike & Fly pilots and ambitious para-alpinists who want to carry their ultralight gear with them. The lightest member of our lightweight family packs as small as a towel and fits in the tiniest backpack. But the MASALA3 is much more than a just rapid descent aid for alpinists: Its playful handling thrills even the most pampered thermal freaks and it packs enough performance to bounce XC pilots from thermal to thermal. Certified as LFT/ EN A, this lightweight glider is so easy to fly that even student pilots can step into the vertical dimension with lightweight gear from the very beginning. The small sizes XXS and XS are interesting for lighter pilots and, thanks to their extended weight ranges, they are also attractive for para-alpinists and those who like to launch from tiny peaks or soar at the coast when the wind is blow a little stronger.

CUMEO Performance. Made easy. The CUMEO is our glider for all performance-hungry XC pilots who prefer to launch far away from cable cars and tote roads - or who simply want to optimize the weight and volume of their XC gear. The CUMEO interprets the concept of our best-

seller CHILI in a lightweight fashion. We have trimmed weight only where XC pilots won’t notice it, so the CUMEO is just as steady and smooth in the air as the CHILI. It gives its pilot the same precise feedback, has the same balanced flying characteristics and can be steered just as intuitively through the entire range of brake line travel.

We have adapted its moderate control forces and brake line travel consequently to the needs of XC pilots who want to spend hours following their dream route. The difference? In the rucksack - on the hike to launch or on the way home from your epic XC.

X-ALPS The success story continues. skywalk made history in 2017: Four of the five top-ranked Red Bull X-Alps athletes put their trust in our ultra-lightweight high-performance paraglider. In 2019 skywalk will be launching a brand-new version of the winning glider from 2017. The X-ALPS4 is a complete redesign - developed with the technological know-how of our R&D team and the intense experience of our X-Alps athletes. The result is an ultra-lightweight wing with unparalleled performance. Compared to its predecessor, the new X-ALPS4 boasts even smoother, more precise handling that makes it even easier to fly, even in difficult conditions. The new profile, the line geometry and skywalk‘s innovative Speed Control, which makes it possible to control the angle of attack in turbulent air at high speeds with the rear risers, make the X-ALPS4 undisputedly the most potent 3-liner available!

MINIWING

TONKA Small. Light. Fast. Our TONKAs open up new horizons. They are super small, super light and super fast, which makes them predestined for alpine adventure. Each size has its own character... With only 10.2 m² of projected area, the TONKA2 XXS is the smallest and at 1.8 kg also one of the lightest LTF/EN approved paragliders. Depending on the take-off weight, the sizes XXS and XS are designed for competitive use or for fast flights to the valley. For pilots looking for less dynamics and speed, the TONKA is available in another size with just under 15 m² projected area. This is the perfect companion for ambitious Hike & Fly tours.

TONKA

The concept is based on our proven lightweight MASALA and therefore has the best genes so you can rely on the necessary safety reserves even on a hot ride!

TANDEM

JOIN‘T JOIN‘T Fly together. Enjoy together. With its huge weight range (100kg - 200kg in size S and 130kg - 225kg in size M), our tandem JOIN`T 3 is your ideal companion for both light and heavy pilot pairs. Each size offers a rich feeling in flight with maximum stability in both the high and

low weight ranges. Its fine handling with smooth brake line travel is among the best in the tandem class. The JOIN’T3 is the fun-glider of the tandems – whether in commercial or private use. The fun begins at launch because the low weight of JOIN’T3 means it’s easy to kite. After a surprisingly short takeoff

HARNESSES BREEZE Simple. Modular. Versatile. The BREEZE is a recreational harness with a simple design that fulfills the most diverse demands. In short, it is: comfortable, safe, lightweight and modular. The BREEZE has no seat board. Its shell encloses the body perfectly and ensures maximum comfort. We chose a moderate height for the suspension points. In this way, the geometry allows an intuitive transmission of control pulses and weight shifting. Security was at the top of our to-do list for the BREEZE. With the BREEZE, we are integrating the PERMAIR technology developed for the Red Bull X-Alps for the first time in a recreational harness. The permanant air protector combines the advantages of foam and ram air protectors. PERMAIR offers maximum damping with minimal weight and space requirements in the rucksack. A large back storage compartment with attachment for a hydration pack and a removable cockpit provide ample storage space. The modular design of the BREEZE makes it possible to separate the cover from the seat shell in a few simple steps. The weight of the already lightweight recreational harness then drops from 2.1 kilos to only 1100 grams!

BREEZE The cover can be separated from the seat shell in just a few steps, reducing the weight by 50%!!

The angle of the cockpit can be adapted to the visibility conditions. The compartment offers room for snacks, camera, etc.

RANGE X-ALPS

In the Red Bull X-Alps 2017, a third of all participants flew with our ultralightweight harness. With their input, we have significantly improved the comfort, everyday usability and longevity of the production version of the RANGE X-ALPS2.

With the RANGE X-ALPS2, skywalk has defined a new class. The fully enclosed, fully EN/LTF-certified ultralight harness weighs only 1.8 kg, including protector and carabiners. This makes the new RANGE X-ALPS2 first choice for Hike & Fly athletes and XC pilots who want to go to the limit in competitions or who insist on extremely light gear. But this doesn’t mean that XC pilots have to sacrifice anything in terms of comfort and safety. skywalk‘s unique protector with PERMAIR technology combines the advantages of foam and dynamic pressure protectors. The protector is inflated before launch with the inflation bag, so it offers you maximum protection during the take-off phase. When you let the air out, the RANGE X-ALPS2 disappears into a 50-liter rucksack. skywalk‘s innovative Power Frame perfectly integrates the pilot in his seat, the easy-to-understand Get-up system with two-buckles ensures easy entry, and easily accessible straps allow individual in-flight adjustment.

HARNESSES

CULT CULT Take off. Have a seat. Feel good. To create something new, sometimes you have to take an unusual route. For our allround harness CULT, we analyzed motion sequences in different sports and dealt intensively with kinematics, ergonomics and product design. The result is a harness that sets new standards with its exceptionally high level of comfort, new safety features, ease of use and sleek design. The basis for the high level of flying comfort is provided by our new Power Frame and, for the first time in a paraglider harness, the back part can be adjusted individually to the length of the pilot’s back. This ensures that the CULT clings to the pilot like a tailor-made backpack. The loops on the adjustable back, shoulder, chest and leg straps marked »+« and »-« allow you to individually adjust the damping of the harness at any time like the suspension of a modern car. Beginners and professionals immediately feel comfortable in the CULT, steering their paraglider intuitively - and thus safely.

The new Power Frame ensures ideal pressure distribution and support – flying comfort guaranteed!

RESCUE

SALSA PEPPER SALSA | PEPPER Return safely to earth. Our cruciform reserve chutes increase your safety decisively. Thanks to their design, they have a very short deployment time and high pendular stability two factors that can be crucial when the

situation gets dicey. Large surfaces ensure a low rate of descent, and the symmetrical structure prevents system-related forward motion. This means that a stable descent with a pleasant landing is possible. The PEPPER CROSS LIGHT is our reserve chute for weight fetishists, and

it scores additional points with its minimal weight and tiny packing volume! Both reserve chutes have a separate lines compartment on the deployment bag, while durable materials guarantee that your rescue gear is still in top condition even after many years!
