acclaimed in her community. Tragedy – the loss of her beloved husband, who was Eshi’s greatest support and source of appreciation – resulted in a set of circumstances that caused Eshi to stop creating for a period. Then, in early 2007, Eshi discovered Second Life. After a few weeks, she realized she could create there without the need for a studio or art supplies. Within a couple months she had uploaded all of her paintings, and created a gallery that existed for a couple of years. After creating her gallery, Eshi began to create sims, including a replicas of the Taj Mahal and the Titanic. Shortly after, Eshi met Dizzy Banjo, an architect and composer from London UK. Inspired by his concept of a musical sculpture, Eshi created the architecture of Parsec (http://parsec.wordpress.com/tag/eshi-otawara/). Around the same time, when Parsec came out, she decided to kill an afternoon by trying to make a dress. “I tried to make clothes before by trying to copy what other designers did in terms of prim shapes, but I didn’t understand the values of flexi prims and those adjustments,” says Eshi, “ so I just got frustrated and I bunched up a whole bunch of hollow cones that were flexible, and I added this fish hook texture I had lying around as decoration on a tree, and I thought, hey! that continued - page 14

It was no surprise to readers of MANIERA’s SL Magazine that the MANIERIA (RL) was nominated for the Digital Magazine Awards. With the real life print edition of MANIERA scheduled to hit the newsstands in the summer, SL Fierce caught up with Topaz to ask her how all this came about. Topaz heard about SL by watching an episode of The Office (US version). “At first I thought SL was fictitious until the subject came up at work. I became curious and

As for inspiration, Topaz modeled SL MANIERA Magazine as a cross section of style - where Vanity Fair meets Rolling Stone. “I wanted MANIERA to be a different kind of SL publication, a publication that took on the more unusual stories, features and themes. My goal was to report on topics not commonly featured in other publications.” True to this goal, MANIERA tackled a number of controversial topics over the years such as: forced sex sims and continued - page 18

hether it be in the art of avatar styling; photographic imagery; literary works; musical or artistic interpretations, creativity is abundant in SL. Having won awards for photography, design and graphics whilst

studying Art and Design, Ginger Lorakeet, owner and creator of Inside Art began sharing her art work with residents of SL as early as 2009. Lorakeet is an accomplished SL artist that is known for her popular art displays at several events including SL’s birthday celebrations and her installation at the LEA Sim (Linden Endowment for the Arts). When asked what the best part of creating artwork in a virtual environment, Ginger replied, “When someone new tries my art and goes, ‘wow’.” Lorakeet’s Inside Art Gallery offers a unique style of art that provides hours of fun as well as great photo opportunities. Upon first glance, it appears to be

a gallery with large pieces of digital artwork hung on the walls. However, with the clever use of animation, an impressive visual illusion is created making each piece of art literally come alive. The visitor becomes incorporated into an imaginary three-dimensional scene, essentially becoming part of the artwork. These framed digital art images evolved into pieces of interactive art after Ginger was shown a script for adding animation to furniture. Wondering what would happen when incorporating animation to imagery the surprising (and pleasing) result of three-dimensional illusion was produced.

The artwork at Inside Art has been designed with no other meaning than to be enjoyed. This is a popular location for those looking to create interesting profile pictures because of the endless possibilities and unique imagery; it is also a great find for models and fashionistas

because of the variety of scenes offered from abstract and pop to classical artworks, there are even group photo opportunities. The best part is that unusual images can be created easily. Finding the right animation for each image is critical in achieving the 3-D illusion of the visitor becoming part of the scene. The animations for the Beatles Abbey Road scene and Meatloaf album cover required custom design by Ginger’s husband to ensure the poses would accurately match the real album covers. Visitors are encouraged to explore and actively participate with each picture. Whether you take a walk along Abbey Road, sit upon the cliff top in contemplation or relax within the warm country sunshine, the art work of Inside Art is meant to inspire creativity, not just be admired.

December’s Danielle Fashionista Contest Winner

S

tyles By Danielle runs a monthly contest and has recently announced the first winner, Jamee Sandalwood, who has earned the title of Danielle

Fashionista for December 2013. Sandalwood was introduced to SL by a RL friend who made it very easy for her to learn the ropes. “I quickly discovered SL’s social aspects that make it more than a game,” she says. As for fashion, “From the moment I logged into SL, I was drawn to the fashion. One of the very first stores I found was My Precious by Agnes Finney. I fell in love with her creations and started entering her monthly contests. I was chosen as a store model and got my first taste of modeling. Ms. Finney believed in me and put me on the runway before anyone else would even have considered it, which is really how my modeling career began.” As a SL model for 4 years, Sandalwood attended several modeling schools including MPI, Avenue Modeling Academy and Miss Virtual World Academy. and found that each offered an invaluable lesson. “Modeling to me is hard work, dedication, and a willingness to always learn and try to improve. I’ve moved up from store model, to runway model, to vendor and print model, to model manager, to store manager/COO and have truly loved every moment of it. Has it been hard and stressful - you bet! But I wouldn’t have it any other way - I love it!” Sandalwood has been a long time fan of Dani Plassitz, owner of Styles by Danielle. “Entering the contest was a natural thing for me to do because I have loved Styles by Danielle since the day Dani opened her doors as D-Designs. I am sure I own at least one of everything in her store.” The newly released Ayanna formal gown and the Collana casual outfit inspired her look for the competition. “The Ayanna styling was centered on the hot pink hibiscus flowers in the tropical print of the gown; I tried to capture that with a floral hairstyle, jewelry and shoes to create a true feminine look, that is sexy at the same time.

For Collana, I

coordinated jewelry and curly side tresses to give this look a romantic flair. Honestly, I am honored that I was selected over so many fantastic entries. If I had to guess, I would say it is because I chose two outfits that I loved, in colors that I look my best in and styled them with romance in mind. Winning validates that wearing Styles By Danielle makes me

look and feel my very best. When I received the news, I was speechless… and I am rarely speechless!” As for advice for future entrants to the monthly Danielle Fashionista Contest, Sandalwood tells SL Fierce, “Just be yourself and wear the things you feel beautiful in. If you feel beautiful, then you will style the outfit with beauty and grace. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box either when it comes to capturing your look in photos. Let your personality shine through in the entire look.”

fashion trends and Japanese theatre, movies, and culture to the many amazing models in SL. “English is not my forte, but through modeling I can still express myself and be part of the SL community. I was an unknown model; I’m not in pictures, SL stores or in magazines. By participating in the MVW competition, I was able to share my expression through styling and was able to receive positive acknowledgement. This is an amazing thing for those of us that don’t speak English. Through modeling, we can overcome the language barrier. This is what I love about modeling. Of course, I study English and hope to improve my communication skills too!” In SL two things are certain, tier and lag! “When I became Miss Japan, the first thought I had was to clean my inventory to avoid lag as much as possible, LOL! I wasn’t able to really clean out as much as I hoped, and many times, I wasn’t able to move due to lag; this made me realize how important it is to keep your inventory clean on daily basis. Until the challenges began, life went on as usual. I tried to relax as much as possible before the contest because I knew things would get hectic and crazy once the challenges began.” MVW is based on a series of ory by

challenge I decided to have some fun and mixed in some steampunk elements…I’m sure my rendering cost was at the highest on the sim!” Carling’s National Outfit was inspired by Japanese traditional theatre called “Noh”. Soraya Vaher of VIOLATOR incorporated the majestic and impressive ambience of ancient “Noh” theatre with avant-garde elements of modern art. “My National Outfit was amazing for the final stage challenge and I have nothing but admiration and gratitude to Soraya.” Carling is refreshingly humble and kind on many levels; she is truly a gem among jewels. When asked what it meant to win MVW she tells SL Fierce, “I believe that this win is not only for me, but it is also in honor of all those that have supported me, the designers and creators, and my friends.

I believe that this win is a result of all of us working together toward one goal. This is such an honorable title, that I would like to use it to do charity work and social activity in SL.” As for the future, Carling has many things to accomplish from organizing charity events to introducing several unknown Japanese designers to the world of SL fashion. We at SL Fierce just can’t wait!

Her love for creating realistic environments with charm and character results in a living experience that rewards ongoing exploration. Neva’s real life work in interior design, her techniques and an eye for beautiful visual arrangement, is well adapted for her work in Second Life.

The Neva Lived-In Homes, in particular Neva River, has always been a residential sim - a place for friends and Neva’s SL family. After a couple of years of a handful of people inquiring if it was possible to live at Neva River, she decided to share and open the doors to the public permanently. The beautiful sim has been extremely popular with photographers, and there is a waiting list for residents.

Originally Neva Sky Villi was just a simple platform way above Neva River, a place where Neva and Boo tested and rezzed objects before they were placed in Neva River. Through time the platform grew and little by little, Neva felt joy in building around it until a new environment gave birth to a new habitat. Residents are free to decorate their inner homes any way they choose, and Neva provides a regularly changing, delightful outer environment. She enjoys making seasonal changes to the sims, always trying to keep things simple, weathered and realistic as possible. Some elements on Neva Sky Villi reflect places in Boo’s and Neva’s life, places they have been to, sights and sounds that inspired them. Taking care of the two lifestyle sims takes most of Neva’s free time, so she doesn’t currently have any plans for any new developments. But, she says, “It’s difficult to stop. Inspiration and the joy of combining, mixing beautiful things keeps me going.”

Maven Homes E

xcitement, change and opportunity are great words to describe the start of a new year. One way to capturing the feeling of new

beginnings is with the purchase of a new house. From grand mansions filling the landscape with style and grace to the smaller cozy homes ideal for the 4096sqm plot of land, Maven Homes along with its sister brand Quantum Luxury Homes, have a house available to suit every need. The mastermind behind both brands is Cain Maven. Joining Second Life in 2009, it wasn’t long before Maven was modifying a purchased prefab to suit his own needs. With a degree in architecture, Maven recognized the potential for quality homes in the marketplace, thus seeing the birth of Maven Homes. The acquisition of Quantum Luxury Homes has enabled the business to expand into the high-

Leaving prim building a thing of the past, the last four releases in the Quantum Luxury Home range have been 100% mesh homes. Whilst certain homes in the Maven Home brand have received an upgrade to include mesh portions, all future releases under that brand are expected to be mesh. Understanding the dierence of visual perspective in SL, with vision coming from behind the shoulder and not via the eyes; open spaces, height and room for movement are common features with both brands of houses. Keeping with his own experiences, by selling his homes modify and copy, Maven says, “My approach is that people should be free to turn the house into a place of their own. I provide a suitable house; they create the home.” Making things simple for the customer is a priority. Maven Homes and Quantum Luxury Homes each have their own region, encouraging customers to visit and walk through each display house. The entire range across both brands offers a take home floor plan to rez, guaranteeing the house of choice fits the location. With a marketplace store also offering previously discontinued and retired floor plans, owning your own Maven or Quantum Luxury Home is easy.

2014 promises to be an exciting time with one further release for the Quantum Luxury Home range already under way. Keeping with its name, the house will be grand on scale. Decorators be prepared, without disclosing details of design it will be the largest oered in the current range and includes an indoor swimming pool, garage and laundry on its impressive floor plan. Attention will then switch for the remainder of the year to the Maven Home range with stunning mesh builds bringing a more uniformed approach to the current oerings. With release discounts oered as each new home comes onto the market, this is certainly a brand for any discerning shopper to keep an eye on.
