m the Editor In the 1960s the counterculture was in full swing. Courreges and Cardin were making fashion for the future. Models, more free-spirited than ever, clamored to serve as muses for designers and photographers. And the cult fashion classic film, “Blow Up” was all the rage. The SL models, designers and photographers featured on our pages are the hottest on the grid…they inspire and delight. I like to think of SL as a free thinking world-encompassing scene for fashion, art and culture from around the world that continually reinvents and expands the creative spirit in all of us. Our “mantra” at SL Fierce is to create the future and inspire through evocative images, cutting edge styling and uncompromising interviews. In many ways, the virtual networking experienced in SL is part of our collective future and memories fierce enough to endure a lifetime. We hope you enjoy our fall issue. And, remember -- who knows how many unforgettable adventures will follow… as long as you stay fierce! Sita Writer Editor in Chief

Happy First Birthday to Lybra
Lybra celebrates in the month of October the birthday of its first collection, even though it seems like yesterday that they started to build the brand and release their first designs. In the past year, the Lybra brand learned how to communicate to the SL community through their creations. Most importantly, they learned how to listen to what their customers wanted in terms of products and shopping experiences. “Often when Lybra and I are interviewed in SL publications,” says Natzuka Milandrovich, co-CEO of Lybra, “we are asked how it feels when you have a brand that “made it”. This question always makes me smile because when we plan our activities or speak with the costumers, the feeling is always the

same as it was since day one. We try to give the best of us and that means to to be able to deliver high quality and caring costumer service.” In the past months the Lybra team have worked hard to achieve a new level of quality for their products. “We try to keep our brand in line with RL trends and to make all our items enjoyable on different levels. We want to create fashion that produces a visual flow, and that fulfills the fascination for fashion that begins in RL and transcends to SL residents that create their own styling in the virtual world. This is why, with the haute couture and the red carpet gowns, we started to develop a pret-a-porter line that follows fashion dictates that we refer to when we think about a daily and easy to wear styling.” This part of Lybra’s venture was the main On Angelus: !!:Lybra:! After a hot summer focused on the casual line, Lybra is having an intense fall season that is full of satisfaction and new releases that included the collaborative support of Ferosh: A Visual Art & Fashion Experience. In Ferosh’s most recent issue, Lybra was featured in an exclusive fashion spread that announced the release of their new haute collection that has an Asian flavor, called Gothic Geisha. This collection debuted at the most recent BOSL Fashion week and proved to be explosive. As for the future, Lybra has many plans. “After the positive response we had this past summer, we will continue to offer

This line will be back with original mesh items and a larger range of makeup plus some surprises that we can’t anticipate now and that we hope you will love as much as we do while we’re developing them.” We at SL Fierce are sure we will and can’t wait to see this new development.

Great Style Image Photography’s Photo Studios
October2014 October 2014
Story by Sita Writer
SL is a graphically rich, multidimensional experience with the added element of layers of social interactions that most often drift between SL and RL. It is no surprise that photography plays an integral role in the social make up of SL. Photos in SL as in RL capture an instant in life, freezing a moment in time. SL photos contain a virtual record of “humanity”. A photo becomes a memory of people you love and experiences you will always treasure. As Ansel Adams said, “you don’t take a photo, you create one,” and the photography studios created by Sparkie Hallard, CEO and Creator of Image Photography will help you “create” magical photos with the selection of the most cutting edge photo studio on the grid. Back in 2006, Hallard discovered SL through a national newspaper “The Sun” in the UK, via an article that focused on Anshe Chung as the first gaming person to become a millionaire through SL gaming. Hallard joined SL after reading the article to see what rewards he could garner as well. Initially, Hallard explored SL to get to know how things worked and asked a lot of questions. “At first it was all fun! Eventually, I wanted to learn how to make money, so I asked a friend to show me how to make prim objects. Then I got into buying big bits of land and selling off smaller bits from it to make a profit. When the land selling went to pot I bought a store and started selling clothes. One day when I was looking for freebies I came across a stu-

dio that I modified. The idea struck me that I could make studios with my friend Rachael Meness who would help me with simple scripts. That first simple studio I modified was something I never dreamed would take me to where I am now. All kind of a fluke, like being in the right place at the right time!” In 2009 Hallard made his first studio and pose stand which sold quite well. Wanting to up his game he found a very specialized scripter, Grandma Bates, who could interpret and script his ideas in order to make his studios the best on the grid. Hearing the “cha ching”, as Hallard puts it, motivates him. “I seek more ideas to make more money and basically have an open mind to everything. Many times I get an idea during RL work and sometimes my scripter, Grandma Bates, brings one to the table. I also like to talk to our

customers to see what they would like in a photo studio and then try to build it around their needs.” Always creative, Hallard tells SL Fierce, “I like to come up with something that isn’t in SL. Our ideas are born from market research as we see niches in the market no one else sees.” Hallard has a full range of studios from those that are less complex - for people that just want to have fun - to those that are truly amazing with unbelievably clever options. “My best products, and those that we are known for, include our multiple pose stand, Our Life Together, and the clever studios of the Touch which uses a lap top pad to move your avatar about rather than clicking on buttons.” It is the Meshudio that has everyone talking though, Hallard says. The Meshudio is the first 5-wall texture studio for complete all around avatar texturing. It has many features to keep people busy for ages and is only 30 prims land count; their Touch Studio at about 15. Hallard uses mesh “A” because “A” is a much better finish and better on prims. He uses textures to touch for commands instead of prims to make buttons. All studios come with free updates and they seem to be popular all over the grid. The Meshudio has many amazing features for models, photographers and people that strive to make beautiful images. In a nutshell the Meshudio can stretch each texture on each of the 5 wall panels; you can load your own textures and poses into the system and even categorize them by loading them into a variety of buttons making things easy to find. The Meshudio comes loaded with poses and beautiful textures and allows you to position and pose with multiple avatars without a pose stand. You can also make the studio bigger, and rotate your avatar to get that perfect angle. You can manipulate your eyes and facial expressions as well. Nifty script emitters are also included as well as props and directional lights. There are even Facebook, Instagram and Flickr launch buttons. There are many more features in the easy to use Meshudio as well as Youtube videos that walk you through the many features. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3o9Z48JjVA As for the future, Hallard is developing a new range of studios that again are completely different to any in SL. “We already have two prototypes in the design shop that I am quite looking forward to making! We have a few good ideas; they will be made in mesh. We are always on the lookout for more good concepts. If only we could protect our ideas from copycats! Our best course of action is to make our studios so good that it is hard for people to match us. We offer the best customer support we can possibly give, we try to correct problems as soon as possible. We like to customers to tell us their thoughts and ideas so we can

create something useful for them. At the end of the day, customer demands and reviews are important because it gives us direction in terms of knowing what people want and would like to see.” For those of you with studios don’t forget to post your photos on Image Photography’s Flickr Page --- SL Fierce will be choosing the top image taken using one of Image Photography Studio’s for an interview in an upcoming edition of SL Fierce. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/40187 http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Manx/46/199/24

Casa of a Different Hue
Arriving at Casa, you enter a beautifully manicured sim of sleek contemporary design with a Zen-like vibe. Shops are laid out amid pathways of marble and greens with artful minimal landscaping. Park-like settings in each corner offer a series of plants and trees for sale. Casa is much more than a shopping mall, however, as all the designers are here by invitation only. In many ways, Casa is a response to the many low-price events that saturate SL; it’s not about bargains, it’s about top-notch creators offering their work at fair and reasonable prices. Casa also distinguishes itself because it only features “legal” work so there is no question of copyright/IP rights violations. Casa is also an artist colony, offering an artists-in-residence program consisting of RL artists that show and sell their work in SL. Currently, the following creators are participating in this fresh and fiercely vibrant concept: Prime/

Stylewise, Meshworx, Bauwerk, Follow Us Sources, MeadowWorks Circa, %Percent, Maven Homes, and The Little Branch. The arists in residence include: Ohsoleomio Resident, Kayly Iali and Carlotta Ceawlin. In short, Casa is a new, upscale shopping destination aimed at high end, fashion conscious home and garden shoppers. Kaerri, the CEO of Casa, has created a place where the best designers in SL can show their work in a setting that conveys a sense of quality and exclusivity. “There is no shortage of locations that cater to quirky, informal, and low-cost styles of decorating, There are also a number of recurring events where work is offered at deep discounts -- oftentimes, for much less than they are worth. Casa is different. While we will
rely on exclusive items to create interest and drive traffic and publicity, the release schedule and requirements are very relaxed.” The good news is that at Casa there is no pressure to crank out yet another item on a tight deadline, and more importantly creators don’t have to sell their work for less than they feel it is worth in the name of short-term sales and exposure. Kaerri, the creative driving force behind this concept, found SL about 8 or 9 years ago from a family member. “I came in, looked around, and promptly left again. It was another three years before I decided to give it another try. This time it stuck!”

Like many of us, at first, Kaerri it was all about the social aspects and shopping. “After a while I starting having problems finding things I wanted to buy -- I’m not sure if this was because nobody made the stuff I was looking for or if I had actually purchased every single product in SL! In any event, I decided to see if I could make my own furniture, and after a while I felt I had a decent grasp of the tools and techniques. Once I had a reasonably large product lineup, I put up a store, chose a name -- Kaerri -- and opened the doors.” Kaerri explains that Casa emerged because she was frustrated with some of the home and garden events and locations in SL. “The sheer number of events can be overwhelming if, as a creator, you try to participate in all of them. Many events
require you to create exclusive products, which can really dial up the stress level or hurt quality if you participate in too many of them. Plus, in many cases you have to sell your items at very low prices -- much less than they are actually worth when you consider the time and effort that go into making then. So Casa is an attempt at creating a fair experience for customers and creators alike.” Casa is all about quality, convenience and art. To that end, Kaerri hopes customers see Casa as a place where they are taken seriously and where quality products are sold at fair prices. “My customers won’t find cheap items that have been rushed out to meet yet another deadline; and from time to time they will find exclusive items here too.”
67
SL Fierce Magazine
October2014 October 2014
As for inspiration, Kaerri tells SL Fierce, “A desire to create. It’s as simple as that, really. I try to follow my own instincts and tastes rather than follow trends, and hopefully that results in work that people would like to own.” As for Casa… “It is a work-in-progress, and that’s the way it should be. You always have to try to do better, to improve on quality and creativity. The day you decide you have nothing more to learn is the first day of your demise.”

Visiting Casa is intended to be a very different experience from schlepping around a mall or large shopping center. It’s not about trying over and over again to TP to an event only to buy the same discount product that everyone else already owns. “I hope to offer a better shopping experience, and while I’m sure many things may change as we go along, I think we very much are on the right track.” So does SL Fierce.

While in the midst of organizing the Annual “Rock Your Rack” Fundraiser, an event sponsored by Models Giving Back to support the work of breast cancer and kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the founder of the event, Jamee Sandalwood, was very gracious in taking time to grant SL Fierce an interview. Jamee began her trek into Second Life in May 2009, when a friend introduced her to the social aspect of this virtual world. Jumping in with both feet to experience and learn everything that this world had to offer Jamee explored the grid, role-played and held down various jobs to where she finds herself now doing fashion modeling and
advocating for charitable causes. Modeling now 4½years and with an impressive list of accomplishments behind her, we asked Jamee how she got started in this career. “I started by entering the My Precious Queen photo contest one month. I didn’t win any of the prizes that first month, but after entering a couple more times was selected to be one of their store models the following month as a contest prize. After doing that for a month, I was hooked.” After a couple months of guest modeling Jamee took a few more steps and applied

for a permanent store model and worked her way up from store model to store model manager, to runway model and store manager for My Precious. Jamee gives credit to people like Agnes and Will Finney, who gave her advice and encouragement to continue in her pursuit and over time, attended modeling school, and worked with other agencies and designers. Her tenacity in keeping on has definitely paid off with an impressive title of being Miss Virtual World Sweden 2014 and one of the Official Misses for 2015. In her words, “There are many times I wanted to just give up, but when I have a goal I fight for it until I reach it, then I set another one.” With what looks to be a gruesome schedule with everything she does one might
wonder if she ever finds time to do other things. “There is so much I love to do here in Second Life. Most of it revolves around modeling right now, including being the COO for Lybra, the CEO of Models Giving Back, and the education director at Dallas Modeling Academy. But, my other passion here in Second Life is live music.” Having learned a little about Jamee brought us to wanting to know more about the charitable work she’s involved in. We asked her to give us a little history of “Rock Your Rack” and how it all got started. “Rock Your Rack started in 2013 as a small 1/2 sim trial event because I wanted to organize a fundraiser for breast cancer charities. I am a survivor in real life and feel that giving back and helping others is what

we need to be doing. Why not use a virtual platform to accomplish something very positive in the world? Breast cancer is one of the most common diagnosed cancers among women in the United States, so we can only commend the hard work that is being done by Jamee and Models Giving Back, a group of professional Second Life models that give their time and talents to support not only Second Life, but real life charities as well. Finding the charity that fit her profile as a breast cancer survivor is how Jamee selected the National Breast Cancer Foundation to support. With a fashion show each month and the once a year event, all the donations go to the foundation to support their work.

Putting on an event that includes fashion shows, DJ dance parties, live musician performances, designer booths, hunt, silent auction and a gacha area, we asked Jamee what her biggest source of inspiration is in the work that she does. “Hearing from other people that the information we are able to get out there has helped them in some way. Whether it be they received a mammogram, they finally registered to get a mammogram they have been putting off, or they were able to locate information to help with treatment and care, that is what motivates me to keep doing what I do. I don’t want anyone to have to endure the things I went through with treatment, so if I can help people (men get breast cancer too!) then I am inspired to keep doing what I do.” As we wound down the interview, we asked how someone interested in donating or supporting the cause can get involved. “The event is open through Monday, September 15th. However, we do have a direct donation website where you can donate year round to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Here is the link to our donation page for 2014: https:// fundraise.nbcf.org/fundraise?fcid=283425. You don’t have to give your real life name - we

use Second Life names there on the page all the time. You can use PayPal, or a credit card to make a donation on that website. If you wish to donate Lindens to the cause at any time, please IM me and I will be happy to assist you with that process. The Rock Your Rack 2014 concluded on a very happy note with a donation of $2,024 made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Jamee thanks everyone who helped, shopped, donated, entertained, designed, modeled and photographed. Genius with a fiery disposition, Yohji Yamamoto’s designs have become famous for including billowing, oversized silhouettes draped in various textures. His avant-garde spirit infiltrates these, but leaves behind the ostentatious nature of the catwalk, causing his reputation as a “people’s designer.”
