We also see many businesses putting new facelifts and facades on their existing buildings. The old saying “Monona Drive is Alive” is an understatement. If you are looking for Chamber sponsored events to attend, we have many on the horizon and lots of different things you can attend. NEW BRANCH OF LOCALLY OWNED, MONONA STATE BANK, A COMMUNITY BANK WITH STRONG LOCAL TIES IS COMING TO THE SASY (Schenk-AtwoodStarkweather-Yahara) NEIGHBORHOOD Monona State Bank, a locallyowned community bank has been helping Madison’s near-east neighborhood customers and businesses achieve their financial goals for a more than 20 years. Now, to make it even more convenient for this area, the bank will be opening their newest branch soon at 1965 Atwood Avenue, the building with the clock that is known as the “bank on the corner” to many Madison near east-siders. Paul Hoffmann, president and CEO of Monona State Bank, noted, “It has been many years since a locally-owned bank has been located in the Schenk’s Corners area in Madison. Now, Monona State Bank, a localowned community bank will have a physical presence in this vibrant community. The idea of banking with people you know— at a locally-grown bank, has come full circle.” Monona State Bank was established in 1991 by several local business owners. They created a bank with these

important goals in mind—to provide the best banking services, to employ the most knowledgeable staff and to offer a friendly, local focus. Locally-owned community banks build strong communities. They make local communities a better place to live by helping area families achieve financial security, by providing businesses with a leg up through local lending, a cornerstone of community banks, and by being there, right in the heart of the community so local customers along with their communities, can maximize the opportunity to grow, prosper and thrive. There are over 300 community banks, mainstays of their communities, located throughout Wisconsin. About 40 percent of these “Main Street banks” are 100-years-old and older. It’s easy to see why Wisconsin is often referred to as a community banking state. Paul Hoffmann added, “When we were approached this spring about this location, we couldn’t say no. We’re excited to bring true community banking back to the Madison’s near-east side and carry in the community bank tradition that began on Schenk’s Corners nearly 100 years ago.” The plan is to open at this location sometime this fall, and then after refurbishing of the Atwood Avenue branch is complete next year, Monona State Bank will have an official Grand Opening to celebrate.

Moving Forward 

Congratulations to Monona State Bank on their new location. Monona State Bank has purchased the property at 1965 Atwood Avenue. Are You Driving A Safe Car?

Thanks For Thinking of Me! Did you know I can help you or any of your friends or family save time and money when buying or selling a home? Thanks for keeping me in mind with your referrals. . . and spreading the word about my services.

No one wants to think about getting in an automobile crash. But every day there are over 25,000 vehicles involved in police-reported crashes in the U.S. alone. Look for these important safety features when you buy a new or used car, and some you can add to an existing car to protect yourself and your family.

Have A Laugh - Witty Wisdom . . .

Standard features on new cars (look for them on used cars): Electronic stability control (ESC). This helps keep the car under control during cornering and prevents it from skidding. Having it reduces the risk of rollovers by more than 70 percent.

If you’re too open minded, your brains will fall out. Age is a very high price to pay for maturity. A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand. Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of checks. My idea of housework is to sweep the room with a glance.

Advanced air bags. “Frontal” air bags work with lap/shoulder belts to protect the head and chest from hitting the steering wheel or windshield to avoid serious injuries. Most new models include “side curtain” bags to protect the head, and some have air bags for back seat passengers.

Helpful Hints:

Anti-lock brake system (ABS). This prevents lock-ups and skidding, even in slippery conditions. Anti-lock brakes have been proven to save lives by helping drivers keep control of a vehicle. Having the system can be the difference between stopping in time and rear-ending another car.

Spray undiluted white vinegar around doorways and window sill to discourage ants. A slice of white bread (without crusts) can take fingerprints and other marks off nonwashable wallpaper and nonglossy paint with gentle rubbing. America The Beautiful Senior Pass ($10) provides a lifetime of entry to 2,000 national parks and recreation sites. Repairpal.com gives free quotes for car repairs based on surveys of thousands of shops.

Features you can add to your current car to make it safer: Blind-spot mirrors. You stick these on your side rear view mirrors to see cars in your “blind spot.” Get them at WalMart of $3 to $10. Bluetooth add-on. This lets you talk through the car stereo so you can make hands-free calls and prevent distracted driving. Ask a local mobile-electronics shop or check on Amazon.com, and expect to pay about $50 to $150 for the adapter plus installation.

Brain Teaser Answer:

OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle). OnStar lets you talk to a real person when you need help 24/7, and if air bags deploy, will notify emergency vehicles for you. To see if you can get it on your car (from $19/month or $200/year), go to www.onstar. Welcome to com.
