Dodranscentennial Celebration!

W

e have all heard the term “Centennial” relating to 100-year anniversaries or celebrations and “Semicentennial” for 50-year accomplishments. In a recent conversation with Patti Marsicano she informed me that the term for 75 was “Dodranscentennial”, which I thought was perfect, because we needed a really big word for a really big event! The big event is finally here! After over a year of planning, our 75th Anniversary Celebration will kick off in Stevens Point on October 4th. The Portage County Tavern League is proud to be our host for this very special celebration. Judy Sopa and her members are rolling out the red carpet to welcome us to Stevens Point starting with an opening reception at Shooters Supper Club in Plover.

Oneida County. This was part of the theory of the “Most Valuable Member” (MVM) nomination. Most local leagues have taken the time to spotlight a member to be recognized in Stevens Point. By now all of you should have heard about our Keynote Speaker on Tuesday morning. Best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the hit comedy series “Cheers,” we are excited to have George Wendt on the TLW main

“The 75th Anniversary Fall Convention is one that you don’t want to miss. Not only is it a chance to celebrate your membership in the TLW, it’s also a time to reflect on those who preceded us over the years.”

This Fall Convention is one that you don’t want to miss. Not only is it a chance to celebrate your membership in the TLW, it’s also a time to reflect on those who preceded us over the years. I ask you to take a moment and think back to who was in a leadership position in your local league when you joined? Who was on stage or at the podium during your first Convention or caucus? These people hold some great TLW memories for me especially as I recall the past leaders of

stage during our general session. In addition you will hear other guest speakers from our industry including MillerCoors and the ABL President David Jabour. All are glad to be part of our 75th Anniversary event. The Anniversary Trade Show is a sell out, with over 125 booths catering to you and your business needs while also providing a little fun during the day. I have been hearing about special auction items being donated by local leagues and Affiliates. Many of these

items may be one of a kind and will be dispensed between live and silent auction opportunities. Be sure to get your number to bid early and often! Another highlight of our Stevens Point event will be a grand 75th Anniversary Gala dinner. This dinner will be a unique event, as it is the only time in my memory that the TLW has put on an event of this magnitude. The theme for the Convention and dinner will be “Together We Shine”. The Gala dinner will include cocktails, steak dinner, 18-piece big band and a chance to dance and enjoy a great evening with fellow TLW members, friends, Affiliates and industry guests. There will be a head table with past TLW Presidents along with a program recognizing the local league MVM’s. We anticipate this event being a black tie affair complete with a red carpet. However, it’s your party and the new TLW casual dress shirts will fit the night perfectly as well. There are a few other surprises in store for attendees during their stay in October. Preregistration is almost a must. You won’t want to miss this one, it won’t happen again until our Centennial! Happy Anniversary TLW, see you in Point!

Cheers, Rob

By Pete Madland TLW Executive Director

Elections are Coming!

T

he 2010 elections are coming soon and I hope you and all of our TLW members are prepared. Recent history has shown what impact the forces in our State Legislature and Governor’s office can have on your business. If you are not motivated this year more than ever, to get involved in this election, shame on you. As elections draw near, it is vital you know the candidates and have an understanding of where they stand on issues that are important to you. Your vote is your business, but it is serious business. It is the only tool all citizens, 18 years and older, share at election time. It is a tool that can make a difference, so use it wisely. If you are comfortable voting for a candidate, I hope it is because you have researched their positions! If that person is an incumbent, I would hope you are aware of his voting record. If he is not an incumbent, be aware of his positions. Being educated about the candidates allows you to make the correct decision on Election Day. If you are uneasy making a decision about who to vote for, talk to other people. People who share a common interest with you may have some insight, or a person who is more politically involved than you can shed light and possibly a different perspective on candidates or issues that concern you. More and more local tavern leagues are getting involved in political races throughout Wisconsin, and they are having an impact. A Tavern League endorsement is important to many candidates. This endorsement can mean the difference between winning or losing an election. This is why it is vital that the proper candidate gets your seal of approval. Not only other tavern owners but many customers look to the Tavern League for guidance when choosing a candidate to vote for. Because of this, we must do our homework. Find out how candidates feel about our issues. Give them a call. If they care about your vote, they will talk to you. Invite them to your meeting. Most relish the thought of getting in front of 6

has access to information not available to most of us. He can provide helpful information when making that critical decision. a group to discuss issues. Knowing what to do is one thing, knowing what not to do is another. Try to avoid judging a candidate on one issue. Finding a person that agrees with you on all issues is rare, and if you do, be skeptical. Backing a candidate because he or she agrees with you on one issue may be as silly as not supporting one because he or she disagrees with you on one issue. Look at the big picture and then decide how the candidate measures up.

Once your decision is made, get involved. As I stated earlier, if you are not motivated this year, you will never be. Make a contribution to a candidate. Donations are extremely important to candidates during elections. Using the TLW Conduit is a great way to leave an impact; or a direct contribution will be appreciated. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, $10, $20 or $50 can make a difference when combined with others. Putting up signs is another great way to demonstrate support. Place them inside your tavern or on your lawn. Offer to place them around your

Most importantly, know the facts. Don’t base your decision on “I heard this” or “someone said…” Base your decision on firsthand knowledge or what you have learned directly from people who know the facts. If, after doing all of your homework, you are still confused, give us a call. The TLW has sent surveys out to all the candidates running for state office with questions of concern relating to our industry. These surveys give us some indication of how the candidate feels on our issues. Feel free to contact Governmental Affairs Director, Scott Stenger to ask for direction. It’s Scott’s job to know the candidates and the issues and he

neighborhood. Ask the candidate to supply you with a number of signs as it is an effective way to gain exposure for them. Show him that you are willing to go an extra step to help get elected. Voting is an important duty. Do it right. Get informed and make an educated decision. If possible, get involved in a political race. But most importantly, vote, and encourage your customers to do the same. It does make a difference.

George Wendt and beer have shared a lot over the years: good times, great stories, useless trivia, and a successful show business career. In “Drinking with George,” Wendt invites readers to crack open a cold one and pull up a seat at the bar as he celebrates the indelible, intoxicating beverage and all its irresistible peculiarities. Spinning hilarious and frank tales of his own imbibing adventures— from taking a first sip of his grandfather’s Bud as a child in Chicago to a beer-fueled impromptu performance with Woody Harrelson and the U.S. Women’s Synchronized Swimming Team. 75th ANNUAL FALL CONVENTION AUCTION

S

ome of the most popular events at each Convention are the auctions that raise money for the Direct Givers Fund and TIPAC. Individual members and suppliers have been very generous in the past, allowing thousands of dollars to be raised at each show.

Lights! Camera!

Auction!

Individual members are encouraged to donate items for both the live and silent auctions. The live auction takes place during the band break at 9:00 PM on Tuesday night. The silent auctions take place on Tuesday from 12–3:30 PM, and on Wednesday from 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Auction Chairman Pete Olson asks all donators to please fill out the form and mail to him prior to Convention. Then bring your items to the registration booth immediately upon arrival. He reminds everyone that the final decision on whether an item is placed in live or silent auction rests with his committee. All items are appreciated. The most popular items are travel packages, sports memorabilia and fine clothing. But don’t limit your ideas to these suggestions. Be creative. Again, auctioneer Colonel Pete Madland has been coerced into working for free. Bring your items and bring your wallets to this great event. Remember, all items must be paid for by personal check, personal credit card or cash.

2010 Annual Legislative Update

Back in the day...

1935 and 2010

By Scott Strenger

Society has changed immensely since the Tavern League of Wisconsin was founded 75 years ago in 1935. Or has it? It is easy to point out the obvious changes in our day-to-day lives compared to those living in 1935. Who would have imagined the world literally at your fingertips by simply touching a few buttons on your Blackberry or iPhone? Air travel was in its infancy. In fact, President Franklin Roosevelt was the first President to travel with the use of an airplane. The general public had only heard or read about air travel. Today you can go online and buy a ticket to fly anywhere in the world. A closer look at our world today reveals that maybe things haven’t changed as much as we all think.

T

he Depression continued in 1935 with unemployment at 20%. War clouds were gathering as Germany was strengthening its army and passed the Nuremburg laws to strip Jews of their civil rights leading to WWII. A newly elected President Roosevelt proposed and Congress passed, major reform legislation including the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act to create the Works Progress Administration to create millions of jobs. The economy was in the tank and many wondered if the nation would recover. Whoever came up with the saying history has a way of repeating itself sure knew what they were talking about. Business owners faced many unique challenges in 1935, least of which was staying in business. As a means to bolster their chances to combat laws at the local and state level a few enterprising tavern owners from Racine formed what would become the Tavern League of Wisconsin. The Founding Fathers of the TLW saw a need for a strong Association to be the voice of the hospitality industry and by working with other tavern and restaurant owners they succeeded in creating that voice. Today the Tavern League of Wisconsin is the largest state trade Association to exclusively represent the interests of licensed beverage holders in the country, or for that matter, the world! The success of the TLW is a testament to the dedication, involvement and participation of every business that has joined the TLW from 1935 to our most recent member, TLW Celebrating 75 years.

the Steelhead Saloon in Algoma. The Tavern League of Wisconsin is the envy of other statewide trade associations in the hospitality industry. When I travel to national board meetings, leaders from other state Associations always ask how they can model their Association after the TLW. They cannot believe we have over 5,000 members and are even more impressed by our reputation with legislators at both the federal and state level. One of the moments I am most proud to have been associated with was working with Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner on the Fairness in Music Licensing Act in 1997. Congressman Sensenbrenner acted on a constituent contact from Kevin Kleczka, a TLW member in his district, regarding unfair licensing of music at his establishment. Under the law tavern owners were required to pay royalty fees if the sound on the TV was on or if they had a radio on in their establishment. The membership of the Tavern League of Wisconsin rallied behind Congressman Sensenbrenner’s bill. Those in Washington gave us little chance of passing his bill as we were up against some powerful opponents with a long history of success in Washington. All of the Performing Rights Organizations (ASCAP, BMI and SESAC) lined up in strong opposition to the Sensenbrenner bill. A hearing before the House Judiciary Committee pitted Pete Madland against country music

singer Mac Davis. Both testified and thankfully neither sang to the Committee. (As many of you know Pete enjoys his karaoke). After the hearing we hailed a hot and steamy cab for a ride to the local tavern for a cold beer. We saw Mac Davis and his entourage slip out a side door into a waiting limo. We felt good about our testimony that day but didn’t think we really had a chance to pass a bill and secure the signature of President Clinton. Through continued grassroots lobbying and the tenacious support and commitment of Congressman Sensenbrenner, Congress passed and the President signed the Fairness in Music Licensing Act – a major accomplishment for the Tavern League of Wisconsin and its Members. Passage of the bill saves every TLW member on their music licensing agreements every year. Fairness in Music Licensing Act — Congress Creates Savings for Members. At the urging of the Tavern League of Wisconsin, Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner sponsored this legislation, which resulted in the following: • Establishments under 3,750 square feet are exempt from paying royalty fees for the use of radios or TVs in their establishments. • Establishments greater than 3,750 square feet are exempt from paying royalty fees if they use no more than six speakers of which not more than four are located in any one room or adjoining space, and if there are no more than four TVs of which not more than one is located in any room, and none is greater than 55 inches. TVs without the sound on are not required to pay any fees regardless of size and number in a room.

• Provides for a rate court to operate out of regional federal circuit court to handle rate disputes, instead of requiring disputes to be handled only in the New York federal district court. • Music licensing with ASCAP and BMI creates up to 22% savings in licensing fees for members. Forty-four states require servers of alcohol to carry Dram Shop Liability Insurance which can range from $8,000–$20,000 a year for a small Mom and Pop establishment—if an insurance company will even underwrite a policy for a small tavern. It was the membership of the Tavern League of Wisconsin which started the life saving SafeRide Program which provides patrons with a free ride home if they have had one too many. The TLW SafeRide Program provided over 50,000 free rides home to patrons in 2009 at a cost of $454,000 which is funded through Members private donations and a state grant which comes from a surcharge on OWI convictions; which the TLW successfully lobbied the Legislature to pass. Another significant change on the federal level saved every TLW member $250 every year with the elimination of the Special Occupation Tax Stamp. The Tavern League of Wisconsin, along with its National Association, American Beverage Licensees (ABL) fought to permanently repeal the Special Occupational Tax (SOT). This was an annual fee of $250 licensed retailers were required to pay. The tax had been with us since the Civil War. Most people are not aware of the significant charitable contributions made by the Tavern League of Wisconsin. In 2009 TLW Members donated $5.8 million to over 8000 state and local charitable organizations. Even in this tough economy, TLW members found the time to raise money for charities in need—from local events, to help defray medical costs for a neighbor, to an annual contribution to the Lombardi Cancer Research Center where the Tavern League of Wisconsin is listed as a Block of Granite. Portage County Tavern League By Lauren Tuscher

SafeRide has taken on heightened significance since two alcohol-related traffic fatalities occurred this year in Portage County. SafeRide Coordinator Mike Slowinski knew one of the victims personally.

M

embership in the Portage County Tavern League is at an all-time high and hosting the 75th Anniversary Fall Convention this October is the icing on the cake. At the time this was written President Judy Sopa was in the midst of planning the big Welcome Party, setting up tours of local breweries and other preparations that will make the Convention one to be remembered. “It’s an honor to be able to host the Anniversary celebration,” says Sopa who has attended each and every Convention since she joined the Tavern League of Wisconsin nine years ago. “It’s nice to visit all the other members around the state and to meet the owners and their patrons. I have made a lot of good friends by going to Conventions. It’s also great to share and compare notes about how to get more people in the door. For instance I don’t have food and I learned how dart, pool and foosball leagues can help bring in new customers. It works!” The tight-knit Portage County Tavern League takes the concept of “Together We Shine” beyond the 75th Anniversary Convention to its relationship with its community at large. In addition to monthly league meetings, a six-member subcommittee meets with the Sheriff and Chief of Police bi-monthly to exchange concerns and updates. This facilitates a good, healthy relationship. At our meeting a member brought one of the things they’re now discussing: why several of his customers who used SafeRide found out the next day that their cars had been towed. “Police were supposed to know they were taking SafeRide,” says VP Kim Krayecki. “These meetings help keep the lines of communication open so we can work with them 28

not against them. We all keep an open mind. If they have a problem with one of our members, we can talk with the establishment and help head off things like losing a license.” Sopa hopes to have even more members by October by getting back those who have let their membership lapse and those who have bought a new place. “We’re a very close-knit group and lots of us know each other personally,” she says. “We all work together and we have lots of fundraisers.” Some fundraisers raise money for the county’s SafeRide program such as the annual golf tournament.

Slowinski says local Tavern League members post signs in their establishments explaining SafeRide and many of those signs illustrate the benefits of a $10 ride home vs. paying over $1,000 in assessments and court fees for driving under the influence. He says that’s important because he has observed ridership drop after SafeRide voucher prices increased from $5 to $10 to help cover the program’s cost. He is hopeful that when a greater percentage of funds start coming from the Department of Transportation that they can get the price back to $5. “I believe people are thinking $10 is expensive and so they get behind the wheel,” says Slowinski. “I don’t care if you live a mile away, is your license and job worth it? Ten dollars is cheap!”

At the conventions...“It’s great to share and compare notes about how to get people in the door.” – Judy Sopa The Tournament was attended this year by 160 golfers at the Wisconsin River Country Club. Vice President Kim Krayecki says this year’s event generated a total of $16,000 with $5,010 going to SafeRide. Every April the league hosts its biggest SafeRide event simply called The Portage County Tavern League Fundraiser. This year over 300 people bought $50 tickets to enjoy an evening meal and earn cash prizes. SafeRide’s contracted cab company drove attendees home and the hotel across the street offered revelers a discounted rate if they chose to stay overnight. SafeRide Snowflakes sales, two annual Poker Runs, a fall Steak Feed and a Bar Challenge Dart Tournament raise thousands more for its SafeRide program which averages 215 riders per month. Over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day it also gives away free rides which this year tallied $1,050.

While Slowinski feels everyone does a good job educating their customers, he encourages bartenders to remember to keep a trained eye on patrons. “Try to talk and reason with your customer,” he says. “Tell them, I think you’re impaired and should take a ride home. Stress to your bartenders, if you see somebody that looks like they’ve had enough, get the keys, give them a ride home, get someone to give them a ride home or call a cab. I preach it all the time. I know other bartenders do too. ” Source: Portage County Tavern League Judy Sopa, President

K

im Krayecki of Kim’s Barrel Inn in Stevens Point played his cards right when he bought out the former owners of a vintage brick building and tavern a block off Main Street known as Erv and Dot’s. The year was 1988. Krayecki was a part-time bartender there with additional experience as a manager with Mark’s Big Boy. Taking over the bar was one of the best decisions he ever made. Krayecki joined the TLW immediately and continued the tradition established by his predecessors (who still come in to visit when they’re in town) of a friendly, family oriented neighborhood bar. Over the years he has renovated, made hundreds of new friends and even met his girlfriend Katie there. Krayecki would rather attend Tavern League meetings and be at the bar making sure customers are being treated well than anywhere else. He is the current Treasurer of the Portage County Tavern League and has served in every other board position over the years. When he decided to renovate eight years ago many of his customers helped demolish and rebuild the interior. With the help of an architect and contractor they upgraded to ADA compliance, dug out a real basement and moved storage there, which allowed Kim to enlarge the capacity to 100 and install more pool, dart and video games. “I decided to do it because I figured I was sticking around a while and needed to get bigger,” he says. “I have a good familyoriented clientele, mostly regulars. It’s sort of like Cheers. The customers of the Barrel Inn are a mixed age and are the heart and soul of the 30

business as are my bartenders. I take pride in each and every one.” Seven people work at Kim’s Barrel Inn including his parents Roger and Shirley Krayecki who help out with bookwork, Kim’s girlfriend Katie Pavelski and her parents Barb and Mike Skibinski. The Barrel runs dart, pool, softball, bowling, basketball, volleyball, hockey and golf leagues as well as a new electronic shuffleboard league. “I’m into everything we can sponsor,” says Krayecki. “Everyone gets a t-shirt and free drink after the game.” The barrel-shaped tap head for draft beer handles was installed during the remodel, thoughtfully brought to Kim by a local distributor he used to work with. The brick building is over 100 years old and was first the Melody Bar, then the Golden Nugget before it was Erv and Dot’s. Beers on tap include Miller, Miller Lite, Bud, Bud Lite, Central Water’s Shine On (a local craft brew and new TLW member) as well as Point and Keystone light. “I’m trying to work with O’so Brewery to get them to join too,” says Krayecki. He is in discussions with the city to install a grill behind the bar so he can add burgers to his current pizza menu. “The bar business has changed through the years,” he says. “People like to have a few cocktails — and some food.” Krayecki hosts an annual group trip to Las Vegas for St. Patrick’s Day and trips to Packers and Brewers games. The Barrel often hosts fundraisers in the area. This fall’s fundraiser is a triathlon for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. One of his customers’ daughters benefited from the

organization and now the family wants to give back. He began selling Football Mania tickets last summer. Patrons get the chance to win cash every week and the funds taken in are used to match funds for the county’s charities. “If someone needs help selling raffle tickets for organizations or church functions I do it,” says Krayecki. “I’m a good promoter.” Good memories are abound says Krayecki but one stands out. “Meeting my girlfriend Katie who bartended for me and having our first child Kyera LeAnne Krayecki who is now four, tops them all,” he says. “And we have another child on the way due on January 15th. Everyone here has been like my brothers and sisters or moms and dads. They’ve been pretty much my life. I bought a camper and am doing more family things now that I have Katie and the kids (Katie also has a son named Ryder, that Krayecki has grown close to). “I’m slowing down a little and I’m trying to check out other members around us and the state.” His advice for new bar owners: “You need to be on top of things personally. Work your business and treat your workers like you want them to treat you. Join the Tavern League! Without the Tavern League of Wisconsin ours would be like all the other states: fewer establishments, tougher laws and less friendly.” Source: Kim’s Barrel Inn, Inc. LW member Kristin Mertes owner of Kristin’s Riverwalk in Stevens Point, remembers the day her daughter Kayla was diagnosed with a rare disorder known as Agenesis of the Corpus Collosum. She drove straight to the place her doctor recommended: the Achievement Center Early Intervention Program, Inc. This nonprofit agency helped her through the emotionally trying time and began working with the single mother on Kayla’s learning and physical skills. Over the next 2.5 years caring therapists came into their home on a regular basis, entirely free of charge. Today at 15 years old Kayla is walking on her own and working on her speech skills — a testament to what early intervention can do, and mom has continued to make her business a success. “She’s my little miracle baby,” says Mertes. Last July, Portage County Tavern League hosted its 2010 Charity Poker Run Party that benefited the

Achievement Center. League members sold passport books throughout the year with an ad about the agency featured prominently inside. Then patrons gathered for food and entertainment and submitted their books for the chance to win prizes and the winning poker hand. The league raised $500 selling books, $500 through the state’s matching funds program, $240 from sales at the Poker Run Party plus a $500 donation from Katrina DeCleene for a grand total of $1,740. Some local mothers established the Achievement Center in the 1960s and in 2009 it helped 125 children and their families. Every community in Wisconsin has a version of this agency available, committed to helping challenged newborns to age three get their best start in life. This makes a world of difference for them and their families during the rest of their lifetimes. The programs end at age three because that is when services provided by local school systems take over. “With a strong foundation it is easier to build,” explains the organization’s Director Sue Chapman. “The first three years of a child’s life are of optimal growth, brain development and physical development.”

Funds like those from the Portage County Tavern League help purchase standers and walkers, weighted vests and blankets that calm autistic children so they can settle down to learn. Touch- or voice-activated switches operate toys so children can discover the delight of cause and effect which in turn motivates them to progress. “It’s great for us to have extra donation money!” exclaims Chapman. “I’m just so impressed with the Tavern League’s ability to raise funds for agencies like ours. They have all their own issues with their own businesses so it’s impressive they look beyond to the greater community to reach out. I so much enjoy telling people that we are able to have the support of the Tavern League.” Source: Sue Chapman, Director Achievement Center Early Intervention Program, Inc. • 73 Sunset Blvd. • Stevens Point, WI, 54481 715-342-0393

any things have changed since the 1800s but thankfully enjoying authentic draft beer, personally and skillfully pulled off a keg by a neighborhood bartender, isn’t one of them! Like wine in France or Italy, beer in the U.S.A. is an integral part of the nation’s fabric and heritage. More than any state in the nation Wisconsin taverns continue this great tradition, giving customers the traditional American social beer experience of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Like many members in the Tavern League of Wisconsin, the legacy of MillerCoors grew from the dreams of entrepreneurs who arrived in America in the mid-19th century. These beer makers came from Germany and one settled in Milwaukee, the other in Colorado. They prospered and merged in 2008. Today MillerCoors is a world-renowned company that like its founding fathers, never takes a relationship for granted. “Sponsoring the Tavern League of Wisconsin’s 75th Anniversary was an opportunity that MillerCoors did not want to miss!” says Jim Wright, MillerCoors General Manager for Wisconsin. “The fabric of Wisconsin is built on mom and pop taverns in every village and city across the state. It felt right to celebrate success together and spend some money to recognize the Tavern League of Wisconsin members at their big celebration in Stevens Point this October.” Important synergies between the Tavern League of Wisconsin and MillerCoors include bringing economic stability to Wisconsin communities. As the state’s major brewer, MillerCoors is proud of the fact that they continue to hire in an economy where other companies have been downsizing. “Between MillerCoors and our distributors, we employ 3,000 people here in Wisconsin and purchase $700,000,000 in goods and services from 1,600 local companies,” states MillerCoors Commercial Development Manager for Wisconsin Dan Genatempo, adding that MillerCoors even gave this economic relationship a name: Every Beer Pours Back, to help capture the idea that when you drink a MillerCoors product, dollars come right back into Wisconsin’s economy in payroll, taxes, goods and services. Like Tavern League of Wisconsin members, MillerCoors employees are also passionate about giving

34

On Premise 2010 September/October

back to their communities. Last February was the culmination of the company’s first United Way collaboration and its employees donated $900,000 to help others in their communities. Combined with the company match, MillerCoors collectively raised $1.6 million. But the generosity didn’t stop there. MillerCoors also gave one dollar per hour of employee volunteer time with United Way agencies for an additional donation of $20,000. Obviously MillerCoors knows there is much more to being a leading brewer than making great beer. Their goals reach beyond having a positive economic impact. “We believe that focusing on responsibility, sustainability and community will make a positive difference on the quality of life for everyone who lives in and loves Wisconsin,” says Wright. “We work every day to help prevent drunk driving, reduce underage access to alcohol, ensure adherence to our strict marketing standards and partner to address college campus issues.” MillerCoors also practices energy reduction, good water stewardship and sustainability in packag-

Brewers, bottles are adorned with the Brewer’s logo and a player’s image. A similar program is launching with the Green Bay Packers this fall. “Taverns have been doing well selling these bottles by the bucket,” adds Genatempo. Wright reminds all TLW members to enter the Brewers Tavern of the Game drawing. This is an exclusive TLW contest for 40 tickets to a Friday night Brewers Game. The drawing is announced on Fox Sports Network during every televised Brewers game. Watch and then call the special number given during the announcement before 8 am the next morning and you and your patrons will be treated like VIPs at the Miller Lite Beerpen. The entry form is available on page 42. Also watch for it in the TLW’s Annual Membership Directory and the TLW website, www.tlw.org. In addition to the Brewers and Packers, MillerCoors proudly sponsors hundreds of social events around the state including Summerfest, the State Fair and numerous local fairs and festivals that create fun events and memories for the entire family.

“Obviously we see a bright future for the beer and the bar business ... and continue to support you in any possible way we can!” — Jim Wright, GM for Wisconsin ing and brewing. Last year, it reduced its energy consumption by 3.7% and reduced its total amount of packaging materials by more than 11 million pounds. More than 99% of unused materials from cardboard to glass are now reused or recycled. MillerCoors even installed an innovative roof on its Milwaukee brewery (brewing more beer now than it has in the last 10 years) that lessens the need for artificial heating and cooling while reducing runoff into storm sewers. Recent packaging innovations include mini kegs and a 16-ounce recyclable aluminum wide-mouth bottle for Miller Lite and Coors Light with resealable twist-off caps. Partnering with the Milwaukee

“This is the 75th Anniversary,” Wright states. “Obviously we see a bright future for the beer and the bar business and we’ll continue to be an important part of the Tavern League of Wisconsin and continue to support you in any possible way we can!” Source: Jim Wright, MillerCoors General Manager for Wisconsin Dan Genatempo, MillerCoors Commercial Development Manager for Wisconsin 414-931-2000 wright.james@millercoors.com genatemp.dan@millercoors.com www.millercoors.com

Coffee Express, Inc. President of Coffee Express, Inc. Geoff Goodland got his start in the beverage business as a traveling salesman for Eight O’Clock Coffee. Then, in 1989, after years on the road and with a baby on the way one of his clients wanted to sell. Geoff and his wife Mary, both Wisconsin natives, snapped the coffee seller up and expanded beverage equipment and product lines. Today they service all types of businesses within a 90-mile radius of Eau Claire and their youngest son Mathew attends college and works at the family business. Today Goodland proudly offers every customer — whether a small tavern, large restaurant or fast-paced convenience store — custom programs aimed to maximize returns on their beverage investment through quality products like Wunder-Bar beverage equipment and Red Parrot Juice, Roaring Lion Energy Drink and Shamrock Sodas. Goodland joined the TLW in 2007 when Red Parrot approached him about selling their juices and juice systems. “A three-gallon juice box makes 15 gallons of product on the gun and saves on refrigerator space so it’s very cost effective,” says Goodland. “A five gallon soda box makes 30 gallons of soda. With bag-in-box there are no open cans and no waste. You’re cutting the cost per ounce and meeting the customer’s needs with the right flavor.” Roaring Lion Energy Drink and Sugar Free Roaring Lion comes bag-in-box as well as in cans and bottles. Goodland believes the brand has been successful because its flavor profile is so close to what people expect in the consumer favorite brand. Shamrock Sodas use the same ingredients as their consumerbrand cousins but at a tastier price for the tavern owner. “To individual bar owners there is usually substantial savings working with us,” says Goodland. Barista Fria Frozen Beverages have been very successful for his accounts and include Margarita, Pina Colada, Fruit Smoothies, Iced Coffee and Ice Cream-based drinks. “This line works really well in tavern accounts!” says Goodland. “They’re shelf-stable so there is no need for refrigeration until opened — just blend with ice and alcohol. Some accounts also qualify for equipment programs.” Monin Syrups flavor coffee, cocktails such as Pomegranate or Chocolate Martinis, and also nonalcoholic drinks. “By putting in the syrup, you don’t have to stock all the different alcohol flavors,” says Goodland.

Dierks Waukesha Broadline distributor Dierks Waukesha has come far since it was Muehl Bros. Market corner grocery store in the early 1920s. In 1999 it purchased Dierks Wholesale Foods in Rockford, Illinois and incorporated their name. Today Dierks has 250 employees, is a partner of foodservice distributor Unipro and is in its third generation of same family ownership. Dierks offers a competitive price point on grocery, produce, frozen, refrigerated and canned foods, center-of-the-plate, supplies, paper and disposables, equipment and a complete chemical line — 12,000 different products for taverns and restaurants in the upper Midwest. Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Rick Johnson, says in addition to carrying quality equipment, national brands and local and organic foods their free, three-pronged approach to customer profitability really sets them apart. Regional sales managers perform business consultations that help identify menu items moving well, which are then used as inspiration to add more complementary items. “We identify the trend and build on that,” says Johnson. The next step is a business review that examines things like staying open two hours later to reap another turn of tables. The third step is a consultation that encompasses operation and facility from waitstaff training to the importance of clean restrooms. Trends include high public interest in natural, organic and locallyproduced food. Dierks offers hundreds of fresh, processed, frozen and prepackaged Wisconsin-made foods in every category. Meyer Natural Angus brand burgers and steaks from cattle raised without antibiotics or additional hormones have become best sellers. “It has superior flavor,” says Johnson. “People say it’s the best burgers and steaks they’ve ever eaten.” Smaller portions and tapas are big trends in metropolitan areas. Tapas are small plates of cold or warm food to be shared and enjoyed with wine and include cheeses, fruits, vegetables, cured meats and olives. “There is lots of interest in the small plates, half portions, and higher quality products,” says Johnson. “People are willing to spend a bit more for quality.” Johnson adds that rural areas continue to do well with traditional Wisconsin bar food like fried cheese curds and frozen pizzas. “We have an extensive line geared toward the independent operator!” he says. “It’s all about the customer.”

Investing in quality products, custom beverage programs and maintenance performed by long-term, experienced employees, Goodland aims to continue to keep putting his customers first. “We are very customer driven,” he says. “That’s the strength of our company.”

At the urging of those customers Dierks joined the TLW in 2005 and has attended the last three fall conventions. They’re excited about their new website they hope will launch by the end of the year. Most importantly, they continue to be committed to helping taverns across the state achieve their best profit.

Sams Amusement Company In 1956 Bruce Dentice’s dad bought an amusement route and six years later when Bruce turned 12 and began working there, he was hooked. “I liked the freedom of the hours, the atmosphere of taverns where people are friendly, and that every day was totally different,” he says. Dentice was there every summer through college and, after a stint in appliance sales, returned in 1976 when his father became ill. He stayed on as the business changed hands three times until 2003 when he bought Sams Amusement Company which was established in 1947. “Through fishing I had developed a friendship with the owner’s son Sam Iaquinta Jr.,” Dentice explains. “The family asked me to run it for them. I said Okay, if you would offer to sell it to me.” Since then, Sams has doubled in size, and today has 14 employees including Bruce’s son Carl, who serve southeastern Wisconsin with a focus on growing strong dart and pool league systems for taverns. Equipment and maintenance are available 8 am to 11 pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year. “Darts and pool bring bodies into the bar on a consistent basis,” Dentice states. “We work real hard at building leagues and hosting big tournaments at the end of the season.” During spring tournament season Sams ponies up promotional signs, trophies and cash prizes. “In Kenosha, we added $5,000 to the Sam Iaquinta Memorial Dart Tournament,” he says. “We also run a concurrent youth dart tournament for kids four to 17 — and everybody gets a trophy!” Dentice says digital jukeboxes have been a windfall. Customers can search by genre, title, album, artist or song plus there are selections for holidays from Christmas to St. Patrick’s Day. TLW member Jim Matzur, owner of The Boat House in Kenosha, says his jukebox revenues tripled when he went to digital, and that he likes that he can block entire genres such as Heavy Metal and Hip Hop. “I thought I was smart enough to get the CDs in that everyone wanted to listen to but obviously I was picking the ones I wanted to hear!” he laughs. “Now we’re hearing a wider variety of Oldies and Country Western.” Sams also shares revenues with tavern owners on video games, pinball and electronic shuffleboard for which it’s now creating leagues. “I’m married to the hip of the tavern keeper,” Dentice states. “We’re always looking for the latest and greatest technology and we’re willing to dip our toe in the water. When something works — we really go with it!”

In Memory of

Harry Wiles

ABL Executive Director Memorial Contributions UPDATE As part of its facility, Sky Ranch for Boys maintains stables for horseback riding as part of the recreational component of its corrective thinking approach to treatment. Sky Ranch requires all boys to work on the Ranch, including taking care of the horses. As many of you know, Harry was actively involved and a staunch supporter of both the western horseback riding lifestyle and Sky Ranch for Boys. With that in mind, President Ralph Aguera and Secretary Barry Becton of the Sky Ranch Foundation have notified ABL that all memorial contributions to Sky Ranch for Boys in memory of Harry G. Wiles will be designated for improving the stables and acquiring new horses and saddles for the Ranch. A true cowboy at heart, we know that Harry would be moved by this gesture. Gifts should be payable to Sky Ranch Foundation and mailed to:

Health Care Reform—What Are the Tax Implications?

T

here’s been a lot of buzz about the healthcare reform legislation enacted on March 23, 2010, but all of the ramifications of the bill have yet to be determined. In this article, we’ll examine some of the tax-related implications of the bill.

Small Business Health Care Tax Credit If you offer health insurance benefits to your employees, you may be eligible for a credit against your income taxes if you meet certain requirements. You must be a “small” employer with less than 25 full-time (or full-time equivalent) employees earning less than $50,000 on average. The credit is phased out between 10 and 25 employees and between $25,000 and $50,000 in average wages. The IRS has issued a Fact Sheet for employers to use in determining if they qualify for the credit. It can be found at the IRS’ website. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irsutl/3_simple_steps.pdf Additionally, to qualify for the credit you need to pay at least 50% of the cost of your employees’ premiums. The credit (for businesses) is 35% of premiums paid for 2010 and increases to 50% of premiums paid in 2014.

Taxation of Adult Child Health Insurance Coverage You may know that as of January 1, 2010 Wisconsin began requiring insurance companies to allow coverage of non-dependent adult children up to the age of 27. This coverage, if provided at the employer’s expense is taxable to the employee. If the employee pays the premium, it must be paid with after-tax not pre-tax dollars. 44

On Premise 2010 September/October

Effective for plan years beginning after September 23, 2010, insurance companies across the country are required to allow coverage of nondependent adult children up age 26, and may allow coverage through the end of the calendar year in which they turn 26. This coverage can be offered earlier than the September 23 date at the discretion of the insurance companies, but no sooner than March 30, 2010. The value of this coverage is not taxable to the employee on the Federal level, but remains taxable for Wisconsin. In addition, coverage from the beginning of the calendar year in which an adult child turns 27 until their 27th birthday is taxable for both Federal and Wisconsin purposes.

Over-the-Counter Drugs Beginning in 2011, over-the-counter drugs no longer qualify as reimbursable expenses for HSAs, FSAs, HRAs and Archer MSAs unless prescribed by a doctor.

Simple Cafeteria Plans Beginning in 2011, small employers with less than 100 employees will be able to adopt a Simple Cafeteria Plan. These new plans will be exempt from some of the non-discrimination requirements of traditional plans, but will have minimum funding requirements. Watch for additional guidance from the IRS in this area in the coming months.

Additional Reporting Requirements

Additional Medicare Hospital Insurance Tax Beginning in 2013, there will be an additional 0.9% Medicare Hospital Insurance tax on selfemployed individuals and employees with respect to earnings and wages received during the year above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for joint filers. In addition, there will be a new 3.8% Medicare contribution on certain unearned income from individuals with AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) over $200,000 ($250,000 for joint filers).

Limits on FSAs Beginning in 2013, the maximum amount that can be set aside for medical expenses through an FSA is $2,500.

Decreased Medical Deductions Effective for tax years after December 31, 2012, out-of-pocket medical expenses will only be deductible on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) to the extent they exceed 10% of your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income). Currently this limit is 7.5%. Source: Kimberly Ruef, CPA is a partner with Wegner LLP, CPAs & Consultants with offices in Madison, Pewaukee and Baraboo. She has been providing accounting and tax services to businesses and business owners for over 20 years. This article is not intended to give you complete tax advice, but a general review of the subject matter. Phone: (608) 274-4020 Email: kim.ruef@wegnercpas.com

Beginning with 2011, employers will have to indicate on W-2s issued to employees the aggregate cost of employer-sponsored health benefits. www.tlw.org

Brewers TLW 7th Annual Tailgate Party The TLW 7th Annual Tailgate Party at Miller Park held Saturday, August 7th was a “hit” again this year. The party kicked off at 3:00 and over 800 people attended to enjoy beer, brats, and dancing to live music by The Schram Band. Some attendees might even swear that they saw Ozzy Ozbourne make an appearance, as the lead singer did a great impression of the icon. Everyone had a great time mingling before the 6:10 game against the Houston Astros. TLW Central Zone Vice President and owner of Bubba’s, Bob “Bubba” Sprenger, threw out the first pitch. Rickie Weeks sparked an exciting game by cracking an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. It was the Brewers’ first leadoff in-the-park home run in 21 years, and Weeks’ first professional one ever! The momentum continued and the Brew Crew took home a 5-2 victory over the Astros. A big thanks to all volunteers, MillerCoors for another successful event! Thank you to all attendees and hope to see you again next year!
