LETTER from the editor

Dear Slayers, What inspires you? I know what inspires me: humanity, love, and the art of expression. My love for art in all its forms and a sincere passion for creativity is a part of the reason I started Slayed. I started Slayed with the intentions of it being solely a destination for fashion, beauty and self-empowerment, but have recently climbed out of the box I put us in. I am naturally rebelious and truth-seeking, so it feels right not to confine my natural tendencies to certain topics. We will be expanding Slayed to include so many more relevent topics with the coming issues and future endeavours. This will include health, travel, fitness, popular culture, tech, politics, social issues, and more! Exciting stuff. We also want to be more interactive with our growing audience, so we will be launching a ‘for you by you’ campaign that will allow our readers, whether they be natural writers or not to contribute their awesome ideas and opinions to Slayed. Stay tuned for that! In this issue you will find insightful fashion, beauty and self-empowerment articles, particularly a designer spotlight on New York fashion designer, Alex Vinash (whose beautiful designs are featured on our cover), meditation interviews, adult coloring pages and more. If you have any thoughts or questions about this issue, or maybe even want to write something awesome for Slayed’s website or our next issue, I encourage you to reach out to us at info@slayedmagazine.com. Enjoy loves, keep slayin’. Love & Light,

s ’ t e l e t a t i d e m How can it help?

What is meditation?

Although there are many different views of what meditation is, and many different approaches and techniques, a core element across all perspectives is the practice of meditation being a mechanism for observing one’s own mind and achieving a greater level of self-awareness. Since birth, perhaps even before birth, the human mind has been “conditioned” to sense, perceive, feel and act in characteristic ways that, over time, become patterned and rigidified. Meditation is primarily a tool designed to identify these conditionings; [and] aims to liberate the mind from these attachments. Interview with: James Tobin Ph.D (not pictured) Licensed Psychologist Meditating for over 24 years

Those who maintain a mediation practice gradually develop a keen observing self that is capable of identifying the attachments constituting one’s identity. The significant by-products of meditation practice are mourning and humility: you are able to recognize more clearly the trajectory of your life and how your mental tendencies have negatively impacted that trajectory. Ultimately, there is something very human about these evolving recognitions. Through meditation practice, you also are afforded the opportunity to attain a greater tolerance of, and sympathy for, the suffering of others.

Do I need a teacher to teach me meditation?

I would say “yes.” Like any other activity or discipline a novice seeks to learn, you need access to a mentor who has been in your position before and understands its many challenges.

I have heard that meditation can be dangerous. Is this true?

Yes, it can be “dangerous” to the extent to which emotional and cognitive processes underlying the patterns of one’s mind, previously untenable, are now accessible through the meditation process. Mediation essentially has a distilling impact; as experience and the mind’s organization and categorization of experience become untethered, one is left with plain stark awareness. Awareness de-linked from meaning-making is often highly unnerving and can lead to unbridled emotional states and prolonged inner turmoil. This is natural but, for many, can be alarming, even disheartening, promoting a sense of personal frailty and vulnerability. But, over time, this vulnerability typically transforms into a more serene stability and enthusiastic curiosity.

How long should I mediate for?

There are numerous schools of thought on this question. Some argue that the construct of “time” is antithetical to the notion of mediation. It is suggested that, unlike time, which is a linear construct, meditation operates on planes of circularity, infinity and complex notions of emptiness and space. Notwithstanding these considerations, I suggest that a beginner meditate for a fixed period of time (10 minutes, for example), and then gradually increase the duration of a meditation session to an hour, say, with the gradual introduction of even longer periods of time in the contexts of retreats and other community-based activities. Ultimately, however, time will not be an important variable of consideration.

What kind of meditation do you practice?

I am formally trained in Vipassanā insight meditation, which is linked to the Theravada tradition of Buddhism.

What advice can you give those just starting or thinking about practicing meditation?

My advice would be to drop ideas of “relaxation” or “calmness” as the end-game of meditation and avoid the temptation to make meditation, like most other human activities, goal-based. It is indeed quite unfortunate that meditation in Western culture today has become yet another goal-oriented activity, yet another thing to do and do quickly in order to reap the benefits from.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the art of quieting your mind. Looking past the distractions of everyday worries and other stray thought to be in touch with your intuition.

What type of meditation do you practice?

I practice yoga in the morning. I do surya namaskara. It is a traditional exercise in the Indian culture. Surya namaskara means sun salutation, and it’s like greeting the sun every morning. It gets a rush to my blood going. Surya namaskara is a series of 12 movements. I move into each movement with my breathe.

What is required for this type of meditation?

The only thing required for this meditation is a yoga mat. And committing to doing it in the morning. I know waking up to do exercise might be rough, but it is worth it to follow through.

Do you know a lot of people that meditate regularly?

My friend and I will text each other when we do surya namaskara. I don’t know many people who do yoga, but having a few friends who share that connection is already a great support system.

What happens when you skip a day or two?

If I skip a day or two, i become lethargic throughout the day. The difference is very apparent with me. I feel much better when I meditate regularly and this becomes an incentive for me to continue.

How long should I mediate for?

Outside of yoga, I also meditate for 10 minutes when i need a time out. I spend 10 minutes clearing my mind. When a thought enters my mind, i don’t try to push it out to blank out. I just acknowledge its existence and allow it to pass. Better to be kind to yourself and continue on.

Where did you learn about meditation and how do you continue to build on your practice?

I think it is common knowledge that meditation increases your quality of life. I started with this vague idea and added to it the things that i learned from personal experience and hearing from friends. I originally did yoga to improve myself physically when playing sports. I noticed that it also put me in a better mood and increased my mental acuity. So soon I was doing yoga for its own sake. I watched videos, read articles, and eventually found a practice that works for me.

Is there an age limit to start or stop meditation practicing? Anyone can practice yoga, no matter what age you are.

Do you have a ‘quiet’ mind or a ‘thinking’ mind when you meditate?

Thoughts float through my mind as I meditate. I don’t focus on those thoughts, i just recognise them as “thoughts” or “concerns” or “things to do” and let it pass out of my mind. In this way i can create a calms sense of peace for myself and also observe the nature of the thoughts that pass through my mind. One goal of meditation for me is to understand the construct of thoughts that i have built up in my mind over the years.

What advice can you give those just starting or thinking about practicing meditation?

There are many kinds of meditation, so find one that brings you happiness. I myself take pleasure in the act of doing things and in moving my body. I like the feeling of physical exertion and routine. It was natural for me to do yoga. Doing yoga regularly also improved my sitting meditation practice. Practicing different kinds of mindfulness is a positive feedback loop.

"It is totally OK to skip a day or two. My best advice to beginners (and even veterans) is not to force meditation; when meditation becomes a chore, it no longer serves its purpose."

44

What is Meditation?

Meditation is a practice that helps connect your “self” with your “higher self”. Your “higher self” refers to you without the fears, ego, and bias; it is you at your fullest form. Meditation helps us realize who/what our “higher self” is and helps bring us closer.

What type of meditation do you practice?

I currently practice Chakra Meditation, which focuses on the 7 chakras in your body. The term “chakras” can sometimes come off as too abstract for some people so I usually synonymize it with “categories of balances/imbalances.” Each chakra represents an energy in your life that may be out of balance, and the goal of Chakra Meditation is to rebalance those energies.

What is required for this type of meditation?

The great thing about meditation is that not much is required for it. All you really need is a nice quiet place to sit—meditation music is optional, but I definitely would recommend it. Other than that, a basic understanding of the 7 chakras is necessary so that you can identify the imbalances in your life.

Do you know a lot of people that meditate regularly?

I personally only know a handful of people that regularly meditate, but meditation is an activity that I whole-heartedly preach to my friends/family.

What happens when you skip a day or two?

It is totally OK to skip a day or two. My best advice to beginners (and even veterans) is not to force meditation; when meditation becomes a chore, it no longer serves its purpose.

Where did you learn about meditation and how do you continue to build on your practice?

My friend PJ had mentioned meditation to me during a time when I was dealing with a lot of stress. Something clicked in me, and I decided to attend free classes in my area. From there, I also did a lot of research online. With all the information online, I continued to build on my practice by trying out meditation over music versus guided, spoken meditation.

I’ve heard that one can possibly attain the same psychological effects as LSD when practicing meditation. Do you believe it’s possible?

I believe that there are similar psychological effects between the two. Mainly, I believe that both practices allow you to examine your surroundings without personal bias/ego, and instead, see things truly as they are.

Do you have a ‘quiet’ mind or a ‘thinking’ mind when you meditate?

It’s ok to have both when you meditate. The truth is, it’s extremely hard to completely quiet your mind for 30+ minutes at a time. Some days you will have more thoughts running through your head than other days. It is completely ok to have those thoughts and let them develop in your mind. The important thing to remember is once you are finished up with those thoughts, release them into the universe and let them go.

What advice can you give those just starting or thinking about practicing meditation?

If starting meditation, I would advise beginners to aim to meditate at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 5 minutes. From there, slowly increase the frequency as well as the time per session. If you feel burnt out, don’t force it, and allow yourself to skip a day/session. Soon enough, you’ll start to wonder how you ever lived without meditation.

Hi, Alex. How did you get involved in fashion design?

For many years i was a professional figures skater, have the lucky to travel around the world and seen lots of cultures! So one day start doing custom ice skating clothing for competition and Vanity Fair Spain came to my studio and request a few body suit, them being next to the best Brands was very short time when the stylist of other magazines start to ask for more clothing.

Are you self-taught or did you have formal training?

I did learn for myself, to sew,to make patterns & marketing myself which for designers are very tough!

Were there any designers that influenced you?

Chanel with the amazing unique fabrics that they create, Valentino with the extremely European romance, Dolce with exquisite fun, but mostly I love to see people around the world in the street and see [their] the point of view and the combinations they make.

I see your clothing ranges from simple skirts to Couture. Is there a type of clothing your more passionate about designing? Couture my dream, but unfortunately not many people can afford in this times, so it’s good to have the semi Couture to pull for every day.

Who do you feel is your idea woman to design for? The one who [isn’t] be afraid to be seen

Kathrine Mcphee recently wore one of your designs to a major event. Who contacts you when a celebrity wants to wear one of your pieces? Always the stylist and it’s important to have great relationship with them, sometimes publicist

I see woman coming and going out of your office. Do you prefer working on an individual bases or do you want to one day be involved in mass production?

I have special pieces that need handmade sewing so I love to work with one sewing person, but I do have production but, no mass at the moment

I know you’re from Europe. What was the reason you decided to come to New York to pursue your career in fashion?

For me Europe is the perfect place to be inspired, [by] architecture, romance, history...every corner have something to say to you...but America it’s the way make business right and special Nyc it’s very fast, in one year was able to feature in Vogue, Marie Claire, Finalist for a TV show.

Do you follow the fashion trends or do you follow your gut? No!! Believe in style which doesn’t have time and trend

If someone told you they wanted to be a designer what advice would you give to them?

Probably would say study another career! Hahaha no, I love what I do but it’s more tough than people think. It’s going to sleep thinking on fashion and wake up in the same situation.

What’s your Instagram and what do you think of social media?

@alexvinash [and let it ] become your best friend. Without that for small designers it’s impossible to be seen.
