Letter from the President

Dear SLCC Class of 2024,

Congratulations on your graduation from Salt Lake Community College! Today marks not only the culmination of years of hard work but also the beginning of a new chapter brimming with infinite possibilities.

Commencement is a time of reflection and celebration, but it is also a time to look ahead with unwavering courage and conviction. As you step out into the world, I urge you to embrace the spirit of the words of noted naturalist John Burroughs, “Leap and the net will appear.” These words capture the essence of what it means to forge your own path and have faith that support and opportunities will emerge.

As you navigate the journey ahead, remember the lessons you’ve learned at SLCC – remember how you’ve met each challenge with boldness and determination and remember the strength and resilience that resides inside you. I encourage you to meet your future with confidence and courage and know that with perseverance and determination there is no limit to what you can achieve.

Nearly 32 years ago, I embarked on a career at SLCC, and I’ve witnessed thousands of extraordinary students, like yourselves, transform their dreams into reality. I am truly humbled by the privilege of having played a role, however small, in your remarkable journeys, and I’m filled with hope for the future, knowing that it rests in the capable hands of graduates like you. Remember that each of you possesses the power to effect change and make a difference in the lives of others.

Erin Jackson Olympian

When Olympic speedskater and Salt Lake Community College alumna Erin Jackson first started competitive inline skating, she used to throw up before races because of anxiety. That was before she lost her mother, who passed away when Erin was in high school. That heartbreak ultimately shifted her pre-game nerves, and she no longer gets stressed before competitions.

“Everything is temporary, and if you have a bad race, hey, we’re all still here and alive—it is not the end of the world,” says Erin, who always looks for the learning opportunities in failure. “You have to trust that you can go through hard times and things can turn out okay.”

This resilient mindset helped Erin win a gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, establishing her as the world’s fastest female speedskater in the 500 meters and the first Black woman to win an individual gold at a Winter Olympics. She also represented the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, mere months after switching from inline skating to speedskating.

Erin, who grew up in Ocala, Florida, loves to push herself, and her penchant for challenges has taken her not only to the Olympics but also to the wilds of New Zealand, where last year she was a contestant on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. Special Forces is a quasi-military training reality television series that pits contestants against harsh environments. “I found I was tougher than I thought, and I was surprised that I was willing to attempt all the things that scared me,” says Erin.

While competing around the world as an elite athlete, Erin also attends SLCC. She earned an associate’s degree in Computer Science in 2020 and is working on several other degrees at the College. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida's College of Engineering, where she graduated cum laude in 2015.

“I guess I’m destined to be a life-long nerd,” says Erin, admitting that she loves learning. Ultimately, she wants to work in biomechanics, possibly perfecting prosthetics for Paralympic athletes and others.

Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

Katharine (Kathi) B. Garff has dedicated her life to education and community service but is quick to share credit for her accomplishments with others. “We are fortunate in Utah to have dedicated people, organizations, and institutions that believe in the power of education,” she says. “Their energy and passion have led to many successes.”

Kathi, a graduate of the University of Utah, and her husband, Bob, founded the Robert H. and Katharine B. Garff Success in Education Foundation in 2004, which she continues to direct. The foundation’s offerings include its Keys to Success initiative, which connects high school students with college or careers, and its popular Road to Success program, designed to promote literacy among K-5 students by incentivizing daily reading. In 2023, the foundation’s programs were adopted for use by every school district in Utah. “We change the world – one student at a time,” Kathi says.

Kathi has served on many boards dedicated to education, including the Utah State Board of Regents, the Utah State Board of Education, the Utah College of Applied Technology, and Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind.

Outside of her philanthropic work and volunteer assignments, Kathi is the chair of Ken Garff Automotive, a position she took over when Bob passed away in 2020. She had previously served as one of the company’s board members and was instrumental in driving its impressive growth. The company currently boasts more than 70 auto dealerships across nine states.

Kathi’s accomplishments are a testament to the impact a person can make with persistent hard work, which is at the heart of her favorite piece of advice to the students she encounters through her foundation. “Persevere,” she says. “The journey may be hard, but your education is worth it. Don’t give up.”

Salt Lake Community College has been awarding HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS degrees to deserving individuals since 1986. The SLCC Board of Trustees selects outstanding individuals in the community who have achieved distinction, made extraordinary contributions to their professional fields, and made a meaningful impact in their communities and/or to higher education to receive this honor.

Patricia Jones-Horton

Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

A well-known figure in local business and politics, Patricia (Pat) Jones-Horton is a role model for female leaders across Utah. As CEO of the Women's Leadership Institute, Pat believes women often underestimate their potential. “Esteem comes from within and can be used in one's spheres of influence to change the world,” she says.

Born and raised in Utah, Pat graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in Communications and has always been a dedicated learner. She believes curiosity is the key to growth and likes to learn by asking simple questions, a practice she attributes to her training as a qualitative researcher. Pat is convinced that Salt Lake Community College is a wonderful place for curious people to thrive and is a great asset for Utah. "If there was ever a need for an institution like SLCC, it’s now,” she says. “It is a marketplace of ideas from people representing all walks of life.”

Pat is also co-founder and former president of Dan Jones & Associates, a prominent public opinion and market research firm. During her 35 years at the company, she honed her skills in understanding people and their needs. In 2006, Pat plunged into Utah politics by running for the state legislature. As the first female legislator to hold leadership positions in both the Utah House and Senate, she worked on several influential committees, including the Public Education, Higher Education, and Economic Development committees.

As Pat continues to drive change through the Women’s Leadership Institute, she advises graduating students to follow their own interests and worry less about where they will land. "Success comes from taking risks, and you take learning with you wherever you go, so enjoy the present and strive to be the best version of yourself every day,” she says. “Even an entrylevel position is an opportunity to learn. Don't throw away your experiences because the hard things help complete you."

Jim Russell

Electrician Apprenticeship Program, 1985

Associate Vice President, Facilities, University of Utah

For Jim Russell, completing SLCC’s Electrician Apprenticeship program was the first step in building a highly successful career in the construction industry. Eventually, he became the director of the Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management, and in March, he accepted a position with the University of Utah, overseeing its facilities division.

SLCC’s electrician program was a good place to start for Jim. “I love to learn and understand things, and I’m a handson learner. Working in the field while going to school worked well for me.”

Over the years, Jim has reconnected with SLCC professionally. He oversaw the renovation of the South City Campus, which he attended as a student when the facility was known as South High, and he was instrumental in building other structures on the College’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus. He also served as an adjunct instructor in SLCC’s electrician program from 2008 to 2012.

“I like watching projects evolve, going from bare dirt to something spectacular and to see all the craftsmanship involved,” says Jim. “It’s fun to see what you’ve created so clearly and concretely.”

Jim is emphatic that a bachelor’s degree is not the only path to a well-paying, fulfilling career. “I really love the mission and concept behind technical colleges and the value they bring to the state by encouraging people to go into the trades.”

Salt Lake Community College’s prestigious DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD honors SLCC graduates and former students for professional excellence and exemplary service in their communities. Nominees are selected for the significant achievements and contributions to their communities in their chosen professional or academic fields. It’s the highest award the College bestows upon alumni.

Lianna Kinard

AS, General Studies, 2004

Chief Marketing Officer, The Buckner Company

When Lianna Kinard began her journey at Salt Lake Community College, she had recently relocated from Mililani, Hawaii, to Utah, where she worked full time to support her education. SLCC provided an excellent starting point, and she remembers feeling a sense of belonging on campus.

In one of her classes, Lianna met a student from Japan who had recently moved to Utah. “Where in the world does a girl from Hawaii end up sitting next to a girl from Japan in a classroom,” says Lianna, who valued SLCC’s small class sizes. “When I think of inclusivity, I think of SLCC.”

Lianna’s start at the College ultimately led to a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business and a Master of Liberal Arts in General Management from Harvard University. Today, Lianna serves as the Chief Marketing Officer for The Buckner Company, a premier insurance brokerage firm headquartered in Salt Lake City.

Her professional excellence has resulted in numerous recognitions, including Insurance Business America's Elite Women in Insurance and Utah Businesswoman of the Year. “I love working in an industry that is built around taking care of people,” says Lianna.

Lianna is also known for her community service and involvement in many local organizations. She has served as a mentor, board member and chair of the David Eccles School of Business Alumni Network and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Hale Centre Theatre. She is also chair of the American Heart Association Board and a member of the Forbes Communication Council.

Melissa Hardy, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of Biology

Curiosity, Melissa Hardy asserts, is our birthright as human beings. “We arrive in this world eager to learn and experience the world around us, but subpar educational experiences can dampen or kill that natural state of inquisitiveness and replace it with boredom and apathy,” she says.

As Salt Lake Community College’s Distinguished Faculty Lecturer for 2025, Melissa’s lecture, Biocurious: The Power of Curiosity in an Age of Assessment, will be an antidote to the recent trend in higher education to standardize curriculum, which often prioritizes the needs of institutions over the needs of students. Her lecture will focus on reigniting the natural curiosity of students.

“We are here to help students earn their degree or certificate or credits, but we are also here to show them what makes our disciplines worthy of study and empower them to exercise their curiosity and agency,” says Melissa.

The topics covered in her lecture will span from discussions on parasitic worms to insights regarding the student experience at SLCC. Melissa will also discuss the need to integrate meaningful and transformative experiences, such as hands-on research projects, into curricula, so students can see their learning come to life outside the classroom.

With a Master of Arts in Biology from San Francisco State University and a PhD in Neurobiology and Anatomy from the University of Utah, Melissa joined SLCC’s faculty in 2011 and has created and taught courses in general biology, ecology, animal biology, and marine biology. Additionally, she is deeply committed to developing and disseminating open educational resources so that students can save money on textbooks and have an improved educational experience.

The DISTINGUISHED FACULTY LECTURER is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring.

Jordan D . Teuscher

Utah House of Representatives District 44, Salt Lake County

Representative Jordan D. Teuscher, steadfast champion of Salt Lake Community College, was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2020. Over the past four years, Representative Teuscher has developed a reputation as a highly effective lawmaker who works closely with stakeholders to collaborate on needed and thoughtful legislation.

From the earliest days of his legislative service, Representative Teuscher has prioritized regularly visiting SLCC and understanding the needs and perspectives of the institution and its students. In 2023, he sponsored a bill to grant residency status to students who have applied for or been granted certain immigration status but are not U.S. citizens. Representative Teuscher incorporated the College’s feedback on this bill, which ultimately passed without a single vote in opposition. Since then, this legislation has helped launch the dreams of hundreds of SLCC’s immigrant students by making college affordable and over time, will benefit thousands of students across Utah.

Representative Teuscher currently serves in House leadership as Vice-Chair of the House Rules Committee and Chair of the House Ethics Committee. He is also co-chair of the Business, Economic Development, and Labor Appropriations Subcommittee and a member of both the Political Subdivisions and Business and Labor committees.

Representative Teuscher is also deeply engaged in the community. He offers his legal expertise in support of several pro bono cases each year and donates his time to Brigham Young University’s (BYU) International Center for Law and Religion Studies. He also volunteers as a Ukrainian translator for Utah families navigating the adoption process.

Outside of his legislative and volunteer activities, Representative Teuscher works for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he leads a team that manages the organization’s negotiations and contracts. He holds bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees from BYU and has won several prestigious awards recognizing his commitment to Utah’s citizens, including the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Business Champion Award and the Council of State Governments 20 Under 40 Award.

The Salt Lake Community College LEGISLATIVE CHAMPION AWARD honors state legislators who demonstrate through their legislative activities a commitment to advancing and improving higher education for the state. The College’s Legislative Champion is selected at the conclusion of every legislative session.

Ryan Holcomb, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry

Empowering students to become effective learners is the principal goal of Salt Lake Community College associate professor of Chemistry Ryan Holcomb. “Learning chemistry requires selfdiscipline and determination,” he says. “Students who develop this will find success in all of their academic work.”

From his first day teaching at SLCC, Ryan has been mindful that many students are underprepared for college. “I feel a deep responsibility to keep all of my students in class and help them meet their goals,” he says. One way he does this is by teaching a special “Unit 0” in all his classes. “Before studying chemistry, we dive into the science of learning, which includes adopting a growth mindset, taking good notes, and mastering memorization and recall techniques,” Ryan says. “Unit 0 helps most students but especially disadvantaged students who may have not learned these strategies in high school.”

With SLCC being Utah’s most diverse higher education institution, Ryan is constantly evaluating his teaching style. “I once had an ASL (American Sign Language) student who used an interpreter, but chemistry is hard to get across in that way, so I started writing everything down. I found this made me teach more mindfully, which helped other students as well.” He also prioritizes using culturally responsive examples in his lectures that speak to his students’ experiences and concerns.

Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Texas-Austin and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to starting his teaching career in 2008, he worked as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry and uses this experience to connect classroom concepts with solutions for real-world problems. “Chemistry is at the core of many things, and I love it when my students use knowledge of the microscopic world to understand the macro, or larger, world around them.”

The TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD is given by the Salt Lake Community College Foundation Board to recognize excellence in professional education at SLCC. Both full-time and adjunct faculty are eligible. The award reflects a cumulative body of teaching excellence rather than just a single year of exemplary work.

Stacey Van Dahm, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of English, Linguistics & Writing Studies

Stacey Van Dahm’s teaching approach is rooted in her belief that literature is a powerful tool to develop compassion for others. “Teaching empathy is what literature does,” she says. “It makes the human experience more accessible and relatable.”

An associate professor of English at Salt Lake Community College since 2017, Stacey prioritizes in-class discussions where she reframes, draws out more reticent students, reiterates key points, and handles interruptions as they happen. She also uses peer feedback to provide students with opportunities to examine how their fellow classmates approach reading, thinking, and writing. This practice exposes students to differing personal and political views and requires them to reflect and respond constructively.

Many of Stacey’s students, even those indifferent to literature and writing, express that taking her class is a privilege. “I loved everything about this class,” one student said in their course evaluation. “The assignments, the in-class discussions... all of it was intellectually stimulating. I’ve never been in an English class that made me feel this way before.”

Just as she encourages reflection in her students, Stacey does the same in her teaching. She delves deeply into student feedback and considers their opinions essential tools for professional development. “I believe my classroom must be a place where students are challenged but feel safe to explore,” she says. “They are most engaged when learning is both relevant to their experiences and when they are exposed to new ideas.”

Besides teaching at SLCC, Stacey has taught at the University of California-Santa Barbara and Philadelphia University. She also taught in Russia with the Peace Corps. She holds a bachelor’s in English Literature from Pepperdine University, and master’s and doctorate degrees in Comparative Literature from the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Matt Affolter

Adjunct Professor, Department of Geology

At an early age, Matt Affolter noticed he had a passion for teaching. Having always enjoyed helping his classmates learn the subjects they were struggling with, in 2011 he became an Earth Science teacher at Fort Herriman Middle School. Four years later, he became an adjunct professor at Salt Lake Community College, and today he shares his knowledge of geology with hundreds of high school and college students annually.

"Geology is extremely underrated in our society," says Matt, who is trying to change the narrative on the field with every class he teaches. "We all use this planet's resources, and geology can teach people to become better stewards." He also trains his students to stay current on environmental issues. “I want my students to be well informed so they can make decisions that can help better our planet,” Matt says.

In his eight years at SLCC, Matt has taught Introduction to Geology, Field Studies, and Earth History and Fossils, a course he helped to create. The project he is most proud of is an Open Education Resource (OER) book he wrote for the College’s Introduction to Geology course. OER books offer students free, online alternatives to expensive textbooks, and Matt’s book is currently used in more than 100 higher education institutions across the United States.

Matt earned a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of California-Los Angeles and a master’s degree in Geology from the University of Montana. He also holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Utah. In addition to serving as an instructor at SLCC, he teaches Earth Science, Geology, Paleontology, and Natural Disasters courses at Cottonwood High School.

PROVOST'S GRADUATES OF EXCELLENCE is a prestigious distinction that recognizes hard work, commitment and selflessness. One student is selected from each school and General Studies. Many students apply to receive this honor. These students have excellent GPAs and typically receive scholarships and awards for their academic achievements. They have demonstrated leadership skills and a dedication to serving others, in addition to other notable achievements related to the creative arts, athletic excellence, or involvement in SLCC beyond the classroom.

Salt Lake Community College has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. My husband, who was diagnosed with multiple cancers, has been fighting for his health, and I had to step down as a flight attendant to support my family. There have been many times that I have wanted to give up due to all the things that I have going on, but after taking a few minutes to reflect on my emotions, I realize that whatever I have going on is temporary.

My unique family dynamic has made my academic career non-traditional. I have two disabled siblings, and one of them is hospitalized often, which requires me to travel out of state to provide daily care for her. My professors' understanding and flexibility have empowered me to believe in myself. I started at SLCC with the notion it would be okay as long as I passed my classes, that would be the most important thing. Now, I have the confidence that one day I will obtain a master's degree.

Breaking barriers has been one of my most significant accomplishments, and SLCC is making it possible. I started my higher education career after a 12-year break from school, and though it was not easy, it was worth it. My time at SLCC shows my unwavering commitment to my personal growth and selfimprovement, and I hope that I can serve as an example for my children that one must persevere in the face of adversity. I am proof that anyone can come back from an education break and excel while changing their life for the better in the process.

The Dream Center has played a key role in my academic career, providing me with community support and influencing my success here at SLCC. My gratitude toward the Center is so immense that I became a peer mentor to give back and pay it forward to others.

Due to my hard work and dedication, my time at SLCC has been nothing short of rewarding. I’ve been on the Dean’s List and President’s List three times, a member of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, a civically engaged scholar, and a representative of the American Occupational Therapy Association, to name a few. I used to be so caught up with having perfect grades and being the perfect student, but everything changed when I was involved in a car accident. I realized that it is the small things that matter, and it was an experience that shaped me to become a more grateful and joyful SLCC community member.

Getting to this place has been a challenge. I almost did not graduate from high school; however, after years of an educational break, I took a leap of faith to pursue my passion for psychology at SLCC. I have made the honor roll, joined the National Society of Leadership and Success, and even volunteered for the Philoptochos Society, which is dedicated to helping women and children in the Greek Orthodox Church. My goal is to become a therapist and help others understand that one’s past does not define one's future. I firmly believe I can create my own success and have all the tools needed to obtain it.

I have a knack for identifying opportunities and turning ideas into reality. I was born into a close-knit community in the Peruvian mountains, surrounded by beautiful landscapes, resilience, and determination. Realizing the limited opportunities I had within the picturesque mountains that surrounded me, I decided to seek a brighter future in America and left my family and mountains behind. I am the first member of my family to attend college, and I carry with me a profound sense of responsibility to positively impact the diverse campus community of which I am part.

The Salt Lake Community College Law Enforcement Academy is an authorized satellite academy of the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The academy is overseen and regulated by Utah POST. Graduating students receive certification as a Utah Peace Officer, as defined in Utah Code Annotated 53-13-101(2). Please visit the Utah Department of Public Safety webpage for additional information. The SLCC satellite academy is for those who wish to gain Law Enforcement Officer certification as a self-sponsored student. There are two training modules, and the courses must be taken in order to earn certification: CJ 1910 Special Function Officer (SFO) Module 1, followed by CJ 1920 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) Module 2.

Seamus Heaney’s poem “Digging,” is a poem that sees Heaney pondering his place in the world as a writer when his ancestry was tied to the manual and arduous labor of farming My mom and dad have worked laborious jobs their whole lives . When they were kids, as young as four, they helped on their families' maize farms in Mexico . In their twenties, they immigrated to California and worked in berry fields, and they have worked manufacturing jobs in Utah for almost thirty years . Through their sweat and aching muscles, I have been afforded the opportunity to pursue an education . When I read this poem, I knew that I had to translate it for them and that I had to do it well . I could not rely on Google Translate As anyone familiar with other languages may know: translating something – especially a poem – word for word will always lack exactness . The literary translator Sophie Hughes wrote: “Literature can be beautifully precise, but it can also be wonderfully vague, open to interpretation . ” I hope that this translation has been successful in doing this . In taking the specifics and precision of one language, and by translating it to another, has conveyed an emotional profundity that cuts to the roots at the core of the human experience . I hope this translation resonates with others as it has with my own family

The squat pen rests; snug as a gun

Under my window, a clean rasping sound

When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: My father, digging . I look down

Stole of Gratitude

How does a graduate demonstrate appreciation for a person who helped turn their dream into reality? Hasn’t every graduate had a special person who, through moral or financial support, made a big difference in their life?

A student may wear a Stole of Gratitude during the Commencement Ceremony. After the ceremony, the new graduate presents the Stole of Gratitude to someone who provided extraordinary help or support, such as a parent, relative, or mentor. More than one stole may be worn during commencement, symbolizing that there are multiple persons destined to receive Stoles of Gratitude. The Stole of Gratitude is a lasting symbol of love, appreciation, and academic accomplishment at Salt Lake Community College.

Graduate Honors

Gold Cord

Students who complete coursework with a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or higher will be awarded high honors and qualify for a gold cord.

Silver Cord

Students who complete coursework with a cumulative grade point average between 3.50 and 3.79 will be awarded honors at graduation.

Blue Cord

Students who complete the requirement for the Civically-engaged Scholar program will be awarded a royal blue cord at graduation.

Silver Stole

Students honored as Graduates of Excellence will be awarded a silver stole.

Red, White, and Blue Cord

Our veteran or active duty students who are graduating are awarded a red, white, and blue cord.

Blue and Gold Cord

Students who identify as first-generation college students are awarded a blue and gold cord.

Navy, Light Blue, and Bright Gold Cords

Students who are graduating that are concurrently enrolled in high school are awarded navy, light blue, and bright gold cords.

White Stole

Students who identify coming from diverse backgrounds are wearing the white stoles.

Blue Ribbon and Gold Medallion

Students who complete nine credits of Honors coursework, three high-impact practices, two enrichment experiences per semester, and who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher graduate from the Honors Program.
